It's your turn...to click here to send us your comments on the show

JP takes the stand and the first player token as he returns for his run.  Imagine a fantasy football draft where instead of players being drafted for a team we're drafting board games for an epic weekend at "WhoseCon" (not real).  We act as a committee to curate the best board game library covering a variety of mechanisms.  Let us know what you would have added.

FIRST PLAYER: JP
OTHER PLAYERS: Rob, Becky & Tambo

In this episode you'll learn:
- how Becky faired with more nature game recommendations with Verdant by Flatout Games
- weather Rob got lost in the well without his Kinfire Lantern in Kinfire Delve by Incredible Dream Studios
- if Tambo survives the apocalypse in Under Our Sun by tabletopper games
- more about the latest game on crowdfunding (well one of them) in Colosseum by Fantasia Games
- how a committee of board gamers put on a fictional convention by drafting games across a variety of mechanisms

Welcome to Whose Turn It Anyway, your board gaming podcast where we talk about all things cardboard and invite you into
0:41
our gaming group. I'm JP, your new first player. And I'm here with Rob. Hi.
0:46
Becky. Hello. And of course, Tambo. Hello. And we're here to talk about our very
0:52
own fantasy board game draft. It's weird. What is it? Tell you later. But how's everyone? All good, thank you.
0:59
Yeah, lots of games played recently, which is nice. Which is good considering you said I've not played anything for ages. I think
1:04
your your run you pretty much hadn't played new games. No, no, I hadn't. But I've made up for it now. That's which is good. How about you
1:11
boys? Yeah, really good. Yeah. Yeah. I've not been too much board gaming. I've been figure painting. So, I've been doing my little figures. Yeah.
1:17
I've done Rob so you saw to me. Nice. The Marvel one. It's nice. It's just therapeutic after work. Just go I just
1:23
do some painting. Yeah. Yeah. Zen zen. Very zen. And of course the weather's been hot for
1:29
for UK. It's been been a bit warm, isn't it? I like that. I'm okay with it. I'm all right with it, to be fair.
1:34
We're just not equipped for it. That's the problem. It's not it's not worth the investment. No one for the heat when we get like two
1:42
hot weeks a year and that's it. So yeah, we just kind of just deal with it and go, h I'll just wear shorts.
1:48
I don't know. A lot of people, we do complain about it. We want the weather and then they get it here and it's too hot. Yeah. I think it's a British thing though. We
TURN 2 - Let's Talk About Hex
1:55
like to complain. We just moan a lot here. It's never right, is it? The weather. It's always wrong. I don't know what the
2:00
right weather is, but who cares? Let's move on. Let's get on to the next segment.
Becky - Verdant
2:07
[Music]
2:15
And it's time for Let's Talk About Hex, where we talk about all that's hit the board gaming tables. So, Becky,
2:22
considering you said you've been playing loads of stuff. Yeah, I have. I've been playing quite a few things. Um, good
2:29
shout out to Harmonies and Things in Rings. Very fun. My tact arrived yesterday. Had a quick
2:35
game of that. But the one I want to talk about is Verdant. So, Verdant is a tableau building game
2:41
uh all about plants. So, you have a variety of different pot plants, a
2:46
variety of different rooms which have different kind of lighting conditions, and a variety of different little sort
2:52
of tiles that sit in these rooms. And those tiles can be all sorts of things. A cat, a table, a chair, all sorts of
2:59
stuff. So the premise of the game is you have a column which consists of there's
3:04
four columns in like the open area which consists of a pot plant, a little kind of item tile and a room. Now you pick
3:12
either the room and the tile the room and the tile or the plant and the tile. So you're trying to look for sort of
3:17
synergies between the kind of lighting conditions that plants like and the um
3:23
color of that plant likes to I don't think the plant likes to be in a particular color room but it's got a certain color to it and you get kind of
3:29
bonus points if that plant is in a certain next to a certain color room. Mhm. So you get verdy points which are these
3:36
beautiful wooden tokens which are like a a monstera leaf. I don't know if any of
3:41
you know like a cheese plant leaf. So like a big leaf with little cuty slits on the side of it. Yes. Yeah. So, you get these verdency
3:48
tokens um on your plant if it matches the light uh conditions it likes and
3:54
then certain things like some of the tiles might be fertilizer or a watering
3:59
can or whatever which give you variety of different ways of adding verdency. So, let's say a
4:06
uh a spider plant might need a verdency of five before it's kind of completed. So once you've collected five little
4:12
leaf tokens on it, you then get to put a pot on it that's kind of signifies this is finished now. Now the first few
4:18
people to do that get extra bonus points and then you just get a boring terra cotta pot to put them in which is just
4:24
like the crapo pot. And you count your points at the end. You have a tableau of uh five cards across by three down. The
4:30
game is ended when someone completes all of that. So it's plays pretty quickly I have to say. Um yeah, just really fun
4:36
game. Me and Stu played it. Um he beat me by one point. Oh, what a kid. One point. But it was good. We both have
4:42
a really good game and uh yeah, definitely keen to play it again. The only question I've got is uh you say
4:47
verdency. Is that an actual word? And my brain was going what? Well, verdant verdant means kind of lush
4:53
and sort of um green it like like green lush things. Yes.
4:58
And the verdy points. Verd verdency probably isn't a I don't know. Is it a word? It's a word in the
5:04
game. So yeah, you're looking to complete you know uh you get more points. plants are worth more points that need more urgency. So, they are
5:10
more difficult to complete. Yeah. But, uh, yeah, it's good. Really good game. I know you you talked to um the the guys
5:17
at uh Cozy Cup Game Cozy Cup Games, right? And I know they put you on to this
Rob - Kinfire Delve
5:22
during expo. So, I'm glad you got got a copy and I've played it. Yeah, really good. So, thanks for that
5:28
tip off Cozy Cup Blames uh makers of 10B. So, yeah, it's all down to you guys that I played it. So, thank you very
5:34
much. It's all good. Nice one. Good stuff, Rob. Well, as you said, the weather's been
5:40
ridiculously hot. So hot to the point where I couldn't be bothered to play on the PC. It It was just I just couldn't
5:46
sit there and just play it. So I I decided to uh play a uh a game that
5:53
doesn't have a massive footprint. So I thought I'll play it in the front room over two coffee tables, like two we got like Nestla tables,
5:59
but then the rugby was on and I couldn't concentrate on the game. So then I had to go back into the other room anyway to
6:05
to play again. Um and I decided to bust out Kimfire Delve. Yeah. Um the first one, Fain Glory's Grotto.
6:12
Um and uh and yeah, and had a blast with it. Loved it. We played it at Expo. Um I
6:17
bought it at Expo. Played at Expo. Loved it. And I thought, well, it's a quick game. It's fun. It's not massive. You
6:24
know, it's not difficult to set up. So I thought, I'll bust out and have a go. And I did. And I managed to beat it,
6:29
which was great. So yeah, really good fun. Um, Kimfire Delve, it's basically a
6:34
dungeon diving game. Um, so you've got four cards um in a cross.
6:40
Yeah. And you choose which one you tackle. And they come in obstacles, they come in traps, they come in combat. So there's
6:46
different um different ways of beating each one uh depending on the cards that
6:51
you have. Now, there are two characters in the pack. So I I played them both. Um
6:56
so I control both characters. Um and they can support each other. And kind of the the puzzle is the the most efficient
7:02
way of dealing with these four cards that are in front of you. When you complete a challenge, a combat, a a a
7:09
task or an obstacle. Um it will tell you how many cards to burn off the deck. There are, I believe, 56 cards in a
7:16
pile. Uh and when you run out of cards, that's when you get to the boss. So you're working your way down.
7:22
It's actually delving basically. Yeah. So you're working your way through a dungeon, you're completing tasks and challenges. Um, and then when you get to
7:28
the bottom, you have the the boss. Um, and there are three different bosses in
7:33
same boss, but three different versions of the boss in each box. So, there's plenty of re replayability with it. And
7:40
I think I lucked out and got the easiest version of the boss. I think to be honest, I think that's the only reason I beat it. Um, well, the
7:48
most straightforward version of the boss, I should say. Um, so and you've got his four four lieutenants kind of uh
7:56
kind of his underlings basically. Um, and you kind of have to deal with his underlings before you can deal with the
8:02
boss. Um, and they they offer different challenges and different requirements to to kind of gain access to fight the
8:08
boss. And it was brilliant. I loved it. It was, like I said, I was in the mood for a game, but I didn't want to bust
8:14
out The Witcher with with all the minions. I didn't want a 3 or 4 hour game, say like Bones for example. I
8:20
thought I just want uh, you know, a game that I can play in a couple of hours. And I think the only reason it took that long was cuz I was relearning the game.
8:27
Now I've got all the rules down. I think I could easily play it within about an hour. Was that a solo game? You were playing
8:32
it then? Uh, I was playing it solo, but it's not a solo. No. Um, it come It's two-player co-op. Um, but the there are different
8:39
packs available. Oh, you So you were playing just like two-handed? I was playing two-handed. Yeah. Yeah. Um, but if if you want to chuck like
8:47
four player, you just combine the characters from a different pack and you can mix and match. And which is good they've done that.
8:52
There's loads of I thought we played with four players. Yeah. So that's how you did it. You had two different games. Yeah. So you and you take the characters
8:58
out. So there's one boss out of the pack, but you can mix and match the characters. Um, and yeah, and I loved it. It's it's
9:04
simple, but it's the diff the challenge is being the most efficient in dealing
9:09
with challenges cuz you take damage. If you don't beat the um the challenge
9:14
first, there's a negative that happens and that can be damage to you as a group. There's 10 health. Um and as soon
9:21
as that's all gone, that's done. Um and then you can exhaust, which when you get exhaustions, there's like ongoing
9:26
effects that make the game harder. Um, so it's kind of managing the situation as a whole rather than just focusing on,
9:33
right, I'm gonna fight him. I'm gonna fight him. I'm gonna fight him. And I found it really interesting. So I really liked it. I thought it was great. And
9:39
uh, like I said, I got three boxes. That was the first boss of the first box. So
9:45
there's I've got loads to get through, which is great. So um, so yeah, I really enjoyed it. Yeah, it's a real hit I think at Expo.
9:51
Um, lots of people bought it. think you guys were playing it all weekend or different versions of groups playing it
9:56
all weekend, but I didn't really kind of pay any attention until you did your post on the socials and I started to
10:02
look at the artwork and actually this looks quite nice. It looks cool and the characters are really
10:07
Yeah, they look unique in the way that they they are like if I expect a fantasy dungeon delving game, I'd expect the
10:13
usual tropes and I'm sure they're there, but I mean I was like, "Oh, this is a bit different." The two people that I played
10:18
were kind of like a the I I don't cuz there's no backstory on the characters or at least none that I've read, so I
10:25
don't know too much about it, but one looked like a kind of like a like a demon almost. And the other one
10:31
looked like a um like a mechanized protector. So it was like um you know, kind of like
10:37
a living robot almost and and a demon. And they were the good guys. Yeah. So, you know,
10:43
sounds like Neon Genesis Evangelion sort of like these weird demons and and I think I played a b like a guitar, like
10:49
a little guitar. Yeah. Nice. And I think there's a half or in there and and some of the other groups. So, there are some of those more traditional
10:57
fantasy characters, but the artwork's really nice. I like it a lot. And there's there's
11:02
kind of one time not onetime abilities, but you can power up a lantern that that kind of your Kimfire lantern, which then
11:10
does oneoff special effects that then you have to recharge again. And you can decide whether you recharge whether you
11:16
charge your lantern or whether you get rid of um an exhaustion card, which then
11:22
makes the game easier. So, there's a real push and pull kind of to it as well. like what do we need in the moment rather than
11:28
you know in five turns I'm going to need this whereas like I can't wait five turns I kind of have to do this now. So
11:34
yeah it was it was really good and because you burn cards from the top. So if you if you um like beat uh say you do
11:41
a combat and you beat an enemy it will tell you to burn five cards from the top. So you but you don't know what
11:47
cards you're burning and there are cards in there that help you as well. So you could you could be, you know, getting rid of
11:52
loads of health replenishing tasks and things like that. So you're not seeing all of the cards in the Dell each run either. It depends.
12:00
And again, it's different every time. There's there's slight variations on the game as well. If you want to make it even quicker, there's one where you can
12:06
take an exhaustion card at the beginning, but burn the first 13 cards of the deck to get you going through it,
12:12
get you partially through the game a bit quicker. So yeah, I'm quite I'm really looking forward to playing again. It's one of those games where, you know,
12:19
you're kind of in the mood to play a game, but you don't want to set it up, and you can't really, you know, I get that a lot where I'm like, I'd really
Tambo - Under Our Sun
12:26
love to play, you know, a big epic fantasy game, but I just can't be asked to set it up.
12:32
So, it kind of scratches that itch. So, um, I loved it. I thought it was great. Nice. Nice. Good stuff. See,
12:38
um, so I'm going to go talk about the game I backed a while ago. It's called Under Our Sun. I mentioned it again in a
12:44
few talks in the previous podcast. women actually covered on hex. So under our sun is done by tabletop of games. It's
12:50
basically a semi co-op. It's a semi co-op game my kind of thing or fully co-op game depend how you want to play it and it's set in a postoptic world. So
12:58
like the mess hitter has hit the sun and al obviously put load of solar storms in
13:03
on Earth. It's been wiped out technology. It's all bone back to bone basically. Um and you got one half of
13:09
the earth that's just solar storms you can't live in. The bottom half is just super heat. It's just hot all the time. Um, so basically it's an exploration
13:16
survival combat. You fight, we got to survive against animals, mutants, all that sort
13:21
of math and and complete your missions basically as a group, but obviously there could be a dirty person in it if
13:27
like a dirty person dirty person has his own objective that he complete
13:32
to complete it. Um, so it's very interesting. You got like it's an action point spent game. Um, you have all your
13:39
usual kind of characters, a tank, um, a medic, a soldier, an infiltrator,
13:45
um, a technician. Um, and the main part of this game is finding resources to survive by crafting
13:52
and drinking water cuz it's so hot every day. Every phase you do, there's four phases. There's preparation phase, and every phase, morning, afternoon,
13:58
evening, you have to drink one water. And if you don't have enough water, you're going to start losing health. Um,
14:03
so you start off by doing action explore and when every time you flip a tile, you you there's all these different subtle
14:09
tiles and it's all tile placement basically. So it can be random different every time, which is quite cool. And then when you flip it, it has resources
14:15
on the the tile. It could be bad guys, there could be um events that could happen. There could be treasure chest,
14:21
stuff like that. And um yeah, so you're basically collecting resources to build
14:26
equipment mainly trying to find water all the time. um dealing with different weather conditions. So every every
14:32
afternoon you always flip a weather card. So it could be solar storms, rain, extreme heat which makes you drink more water. Um so it's really good survival
14:40
kind of game and it's all the components to are really nice I will say as well. Your own little player boards and you and little
14:47
cubes you put on they slot in lovely. Everything's really nice. Um yeah and
14:52
you have about six AP so you get six action points a turn. So every time you
14:58
spin your X every phase you get six action points and then you got to rest because you have another side of the board where you have the three markers
15:03
where you have fully rested in between and you have tired and if you're tired you only can rest up to four action
15:09
points. So if you don't rest in the evening so you next turn you next day you play you're going to be
15:16
restricted. Yeah restricted basically. So you can't do all your action points which can be very devastating in the
15:21
game. Um I thought that was quite a good mechanic. So at night and when you do the evening face, the evening face is horrible basically. So you got to every
15:28
time you move on to a different tie, you'll be drawing an evening card and a night card. And night cards have ghouls,
15:34
mutants, all the horrible crap basically. So you don't want to be moving a night. So all you want to try and do is camp and rest, which seems a
15:40
bit there, but you have to do it. But even even if you do that, you still have to draw one night card. So the three of you on one tile, you have you still draw
15:46
two. But if you have a tent, you draw one. So, you've got to try and work as a team to make sure you're all back in the
15:52
same spot if you can. Otherwise, it it just gets horrible because if you do have a mutant spawn, you can all kind of fight it because combat is very
15:59
it's more of a combat is you roll a dice and the enemy rolls dice and you literally just hit each other. There's no defending in it really. You just one
16:05
damage him and he damage you back basically. So, it's it's very punishing and you don't have a lot of health and you get
16:10
infections and you can get everything. So, it's really it's really good fun game. I like it. There are some air bits
16:16
about it. I think I don't know how people feel about house rules. I mean, me and myself, there's a whole crafting
16:22
sheet and on the back of it, you got all these little section you can write your own little house rules. And I'm thinking, is that a bit lazy? I don't
16:27
know. Um, there's one like for instance, when the bad guys move, you roll a D roll a d
16:33
and but it doesn't tell you in the rule book what happens to it if it moves off that there is no tile to move on to. It
16:38
doesn't say if it stays or if it goes off the board or what happens to him. So, you kind of make your own house rule. I think that's a bit
16:45
I don't know. finish my board game off of you. Yeah, sort of. But it's still good fun and it plays quite quickly as well. It's
16:51
not a huge long game. You play in an hour and a half or you die in an hour. You can die very easily as well. Um there is player elimination in it
16:57
which is a bit of a no. Um I haven't experienced the bad guy. We played every time I've played it has been fully co-op
17:03
at the moment. That was my question actually. Have you tried it semi-op? No. And it's it's basically the semi-copy is like battle scar galactica.
17:09
You put one bad card in a deck and you shuffle them out to people and you look at the card and one of them's got the
17:14
bad card and then that each they got three different bad cards which have three different missions so you don't know which ones you got. So
17:20
yeah, you only put one of those in so you don't know which missions he's got to do. Mhm. But that's that's how it works. Yeah. So
17:25
I haven't played it with the bad person. It might make the game a whole different thing actually and I've got to do it. I've got to set it up some point.
17:30
Yeah. Give it a whirl. Give it a whirl for we've played it twice. We have and I I really enjoy it.
17:35
The first time I loved it. First time I thought was great because everything was going well. We sort of were doing all right and then
17:42
you fell down into a hole, got bit bitten by a ghoul, got infected and died in like 30 seconds. It was like, "Oh
17:48
shit." Like this changes real quick. Um, and we had a blast with the first
17:53
time. The second time it felt I don't know, it felt a bit flat. And I think that was the Was that the four player
17:58
fully co-op version? Yeah. Yeah. And it I don't know why it it just felt it didn't feel as dangerous as the
18:06
first time we played it. I think it's all about cuz I think when we first play we didn't know what we're doing and like the night phase I thought
18:11
you can control the night phase you kind of makes it a little bit easier but it's still hard but yeah you're right it was
18:16
a bit flat. It it kind of felt like Fallout when you're not the overpowered main character. Do you know in in that like you know that
18:22
uh that survival that survivalist environment where you don't have power armor. Do you know what I mean? It was
18:28
like that and I I really enjoyed it. I I really did. But like I say, the second time it just felt a little bit flat. I
18:35
think you might need that nasty bugger in there just to spice that game up a little bit. If they had that flat game, that nasty
18:40
bugger could that flat game. Exactly. Well, they wouldn't make it flat, would they? Cuz if you you cream in this, it's
18:47
too easy. They're going to make it harder for you. Yeah. Yeah. And you there's always one bad line as well. So, you know, there's someone else going to be
JP - Colosseum
18:53
Well, I I like the game. I like the artwork. I like the I like the whole um kind of idea behind it. And I think it's
18:59
one that we should definitely explore a bit more. I think there's real potential in that game. Yeah, there is. Definitely. I got to try
19:05
again at some point. Definitely. Yeah. Nice. How about you then, JP? Yeah, I'm going to talk about a game I
19:11
played on Gaming Rules a few weeks back. Um, which is Colosseum by Fantasia
19:18
Games. And uh, I've never really heard of this game. Apparently, it's a remake from a Days of Wonder Classic. And Paul
19:27
said, "Fancy giving it a go? Why not?" So I briefly looked at the the box art and I thought, "This looks cool." It's
19:33
got um the artwork's done by the Mo. So if you're used to Endless Winter, um
19:40
Imperium and Colo does. It's just that art style and he
19:47
looks really good. It really kind of brings to life um his style, gladiators and all that kind of stuff. So I kind of
19:54
went in thinking, "Oh, okay. I know what this is going to be. It's going to be gladatorial combat kind of game. Thinking it's going to be very much like
19:59
Hopus, right? Yeah. I thought, oh, wonder how they're going to do it and it's different. Completely learned. It's nothing like
20:06
this game that I had in my head. And uh and I played something else which was more like coliseum and manager um
20:12
400 BC uh video game basically is the closest thing I could relate it to.
20:19
So the board's quite cool cuz it's what you'd expect. It's the coliseum. Um, and
20:26
it's got all of these kind of spaces around and it can only like if anyone's played Hotel, an old 80s game called
20:33
Hotel. I remember you saying about this before. Yeah. It's it's it's kind of like you've got um these entrances that you put to
20:40
the coliseum. So, you start off as as an area um on one of the kind of I say
20:46
corners. Coliseum's round, but you get what I'm saying. So, four of you segments. You've got like three gates.
20:53
That's your gate that you managed to um as entrance to the coliseum and then everyone's got their kind of gates. And
20:59
then you've got um these statues. One's the uh the yeah the emperor ones um or a
21:06
few others are like gold, silver, and bronze. I can't remember the official titles of these people, but they're they're you know important people. Um
21:14
and they also kind of go around the coliseum through through different phases. And um if I kind of explain the
21:21
flow of the game, it'll probably explain the game because it's it's quite different and unique. So again, I kind
21:27
of sat and went, "What is this? What are we doing? This is mad." So you have four rounds in the game and you start off
21:33
with an investment phase. So you've got a bit of cash and you want to invest in maybe adding more gates, which I'll
21:40
explain why that's important uh later. Um you can invest in um potential events
21:46
that you're going to put on in the coliseum. So, it could be full-on gladatorial fighting, or it could be a
21:53
comedy show, or it could be um racing, chariot racing, whatever. It doesn't
21:58
really matter. There's different events, and there's loads of them that you can kind of purchase. Uh, and they're tiered from kind of tier one, tier two, tier
22:06
three, and you start with one as well. So, you can invest money in that. You can invest in um uh basically building a
22:12
little structure in your kind of area on the board, which will allow you to manipulate the dice, which I'll explain in a bit. And um you can also uh hire
22:20
agents that will help you boost your renown. I think it's called renown um for when you put these events on. So
22:26
they're going to help promote them and and make them a bit more of a spectacle. So you do all all this investments and
22:31
then you then draw from a bag the uh load of tiles and they go on the
22:37
coliseum and the top and there's different sections where these tiles go on and these tiles are kind of
22:43
representing gladiators like comedy people, scenery makers, animals, all the
22:50
different components that you would need to put on these various different shows. Now the events that you have will say
22:55
what you need to put the show on. So, we might say you need two gladiators, red tiles, one orange thing, and a green
23:02
thing. But really, if you take the theme away, it's it's like Lords of War Deep. I need so many cubes of this and this
23:09
and this. It's the same kind of thing. Um, so, but you then kind of go through
23:14
an auctioning phase, which is quite nice. I quite like auctioning in in games. And you always have to start with
23:19
eight money. You go, "Right, I want that section." And the section contains three tiles. I want that one for eight. And
23:26
then off you go around. No. Nine. 10. I abstain. All that kind of stuff until you get to the point where you agree.
23:32
And if you don't win your bid, the person who basically wins, they're
23:39
frozen out of the next round of your bidding. Um, so then you get to go
23:45
again. So, you could kind of do a bit of a shell game saying, "Actually, I want this the set tiles on the left, but I'm
23:51
going to start my bidding on the right cuz I know Rob wants those and maybe I can freeze him out because I think he
23:57
might also want these." So, you can kind of do a lot of this manipulation, which is quite clever if you're good at
24:03
auctioning games. I'm not. Um, so you kind of do all of that and when you get what you want, then that's it. You're
24:08
done. Then the whole thing kind of refreshes and then you you go to the next player, the next player, next player until everyone's got uh a bunch
24:14
of tiles and they slot into your kind of player board and then you get a little trading phase. So then you can do all
24:20
the bartering and saying, "Actually, Becky, I see you've got two green tiles. I know you don't need them cuz your event saying you don't need them. Um,
24:27
but I really need them, but you need this. So how about we do a bit of a a deal?" And they can be like non-binding
24:33
deals for later. You can do all of that kind of stuff, or you can do instant trades. And if you ever get three or
24:38
more of the same um colored tile, you'll get the mastery of that area. So if you
24:45
got three gladiators, we have the master gladiator, which will help boost your popularity of your event. So you kind of
24:52
want to get all of these different collections. And if someone else gets three, nothing happens until they get more than you, and then they steal it
24:58
off you. And so you end up with this kind of shenanigans going on. And once you kind of done the trading, you put
25:04
the event on and then off you go. You're going to put the event on. You uh um
25:10
then kind of roll these two dice that you've got. And this is where the tracks and gates come into play. And what's
25:16
quite cool with the dice is that you'll um you'll either pick one of the values.
25:22
So if you get a one and a three, you can either combine them all, get four, or you can say one and three and move the
25:29
important statues around those many spaces. And you want to try and land them in your gates because if you land
25:35
them on your gates, you'll get more victory points or renown. Um, and also there are other kind of bonuses that you
25:41
might get if they land on there, which is really useful stuff. So that's a game in itself, trying to manipulate where
25:47
these things bloody land and uh trying not to get them in a position where your opponents can then easily get them to
25:53
where they want them. So sometimes you can shaft them and do all that kind of stuff. And then you kind of put the show on and uh and then you score your renown
26:02
or or victory points and then kind of rinse repeat four times. The difference with the victory point scoring is
26:10
you always kind of reset back to zero in a way. don't actually on the track, but for each round, you mark where you've
26:17
scored the highest each round. So, if I've earned 20 VPs on the first round, I'm I'm on 20 VPs. And if I earn 24 VPs
26:25
on round two, I move it to 24. I don't add it on. I put it to wherever my highest is. So, it doesn't always matter
26:33
that your first round, second round is a bit crap, cuz it's about where you're getting to on your last round, which I
26:40
thought was a bit different actually. Rather than going, well, I've got an early lead. Doesn't matter if that last
26:45
round is stalking and you're getting 85, 70, whatever, then you might win. And there's catch up little um kind of
26:52
bonuses for who goes last or who has the least and they can start stealing [ __ ] off the the the player who's going
26:58
highest and all that kind of stuff. I really like that idea because it gives you a lot of incentive to try different
27:05
ways of of trying different methods and trying different things. Yeah, that's really cool. I like that.
27:11
It's just different to what I expected. So, I I came there and I remember Paul asking me like, "What did you think of
27:16
the game afterwards cuz it was a sponsor stream, so you don't tend to give opinions during a sponsor stream for
27:22
obvious reasons, but afterwards I said it was nothing like the game I thought it was going to be. That's not a bad
27:27
thing. It was just not what I had in my head. You thought fighty. I thought fighty fighty gladiators
27:33
stabby stabby. Haha. I got you. Me, but it was nothing like that. It's like going to play FIFA and finding
27:39
out it's championship manager. It's just sort of It's exactly it. It was okay. But it's
27:44
cool and it was different and there's nothing else like it which is a good thing. Yeah. So, is it all open for like you're
27:50
talking about bartering and that sort of stuff. So, is it all open like information? Yeah,
27:56
that's Yeah, it's all on your board. Yeah. So, everything you can see what someone's trying to do. Yeah. So, therefore, you know what they need
28:03
and you know what they want and you can offer a real good deal and sweeten the part and all of that stuff. So,
28:08
if you don't like Yeah. If you don't like auctioning and trading, maybe not for you.
28:14
You don't have to do these things, but it's part of the game, right? Um, but if you quite like the thematics of it and
28:20
you can get into it and even though underneath it all, you know, it's I need two red, one yellow, and whatever, if
28:26
you can kind of understand why um I'm putting a show with with horses, why I
28:31
need lots of animals for it, you know, or if I'm putting a show that's uh um
28:36
yeah, with gladiators fighting, I'm going to need lots of people fighting. But it's not just as simple as that. You need a mix and it's a different blend of
28:42
of stuff. And it's nice that you're kind of working towards a really good like one humongous
28:48
go. Yeah. Is better than Yeah. four quite good ones. I quite like that. So you're kind of
28:54
building your engine for it to be a big old smash. Yeah. You're trying to get your stepping stones to a place where you're going to
28:59
kill it on that last round cuz if you don't kill it on the last round or you've lost but and it doesn't matter if
29:04
you're first, second, thirds are subpar as long as it's getting you to the killer show at the end and that's what
29:10
matters. So yeah, that's very different. Very cool. Thought I'd mention it out now or is it
TURN 3 - Main Event: The gridiron game draft
29:16
backstar? Oh, okay. Yeah. Was that Coliseum? You said Coliseum. Yes. So, yeah, if it sounds like your
29:23
jam, check it out. Um, if not, no worries. I enjoyed it. It was fun.
29:28
Good stuff. Right, we'll move on to the main segment. [Music]
29:41
Okay, it's time for the main segment where we are going to do our very own fantasy football board ball board game
29:46
in draft and and basically that was my [ __ ] American accent sort of self
29:52
American was it? Yeah. I was worried I was going to have to tell you it was really [ __ ] Yeah. Um, so, so this is kind of like
30:00
our take on a uh basically a football draft where you draft players for a team
30:06
and it could be obviously from anywhere and anything. But we kind of twisted this around and said actually we've got
30:12
this board gaming weekend coming up like let's call it who's con, right? It's
30:17
ours. Whose con is it anyway? Whose con is it anyway? Coming soon maybe. Who knows? And we've got this
30:22
awesome board gaming event that's coming up. And we as a committee have to I've
30:27
got a hard job of bringing albeit a very small games library of eight games um
30:34
that we need to draft and and put in there which is going to cover a variety of different mechanics that people will
30:40
love. And obviously we'll be biased cuz we want to put our own [ __ ] in there that we want to play, right?
30:46
And this is quite simple, guys. So we're going to go through like eight rounds. Um each round is um um has a mechanism
30:52
that will probably dominate the game in terms of what you will think of um when when we we talk about the mechanism. And
30:59
just to kind of make this a little bit different, if we come up with the obvious choices within our group, then
31:05
if we have the same, we'll knock them out. Okay. The idea is that we need to
31:10
vote or get to a place where we pick one as the committee for who's con to get
31:16
our draft in. Make sense? Yeah. Hopefully it makes sense. Hopefully
31:22
we'll see what the hell happens. As like anything when we're learning a new game, you need one or two rounds to get into it.
31:27
Yeah. Well, if you think about it, when we did our come die with me episode, we got through that, didn't we?
31:33
I still haven't forgiven you for a fall. We got through that. I still haven't forgiven you, mate. It's this group, wasn't it? I just
31:38
realized I just can't believe you didn't want to sit on a boat in the middle of a Disneyland. I did. I just I'd rather go to Disney
Game 1 - Worker Placement
31:44
World. I don't go very often. Wow. tight. To be fair, if you're going to Disney World and sitting on a boat, you miss
31:51
Yeah, I don't agree. That's fine. So, we're going to get into the uh the
31:57
first category uh which is the very much classic worker placement. Classic. It's classic. So, what we want to know
32:04
is not to explain the games, but we want to know why you've picked it, why it should go into the uh the Who's Con
32:11
board game library. So, T, I'm going to start with you, mate. Okay. First for me, I've picked
32:16
Cavverna. Cavverna. Cavverna. Yeah, completely complete worker placement. No, no cards, nothing. It's
32:22
just 100% a worker placement. You got bad effects if you don't fulfill things. You got you can breed in it. You can
32:28
collect all resources, build your own farm, grow your own vegetables, everything you like. Got vegetables, live with a donkey,
32:35
go on missions with dwarfs, and then build your own cave. So, your little house and it's and it's just all work placement. It's not too
32:41
um blocky either for people, I don't think. I think there's always ways to go so you're not really blocking someone which work placement has a bad thing at
32:48
doing. Yeah, can it can do and it still can but not as bad as other ones. I think Cavvern is quite stretched like that.
32:54
And it contains more dwarfs than any other workup placement game that I've I've heard of. So yeah, 100% more
32:59
dwarfs. 100% more dwarfs. Yeah, good choice. Solid choice. Classic choice in in fairness. So
33:05
yeah, nice. Rob, what are you bringing to the party, pal? So I've gone for a game that I've played
33:11
a couple times. I've sucked at it both times, but really enjoyed it. Yeah. Champions and Mid.
33:17
Oh, okay. It's kind of like an RPG worker placement with Vikings.
33:23
Yeah. With that whole Norse mythology um and resource management and a bit of
33:31
knobbybiness where people go in the space where you want that. It's quite tight. So, you know, the the sooner that you
33:37
can go in your round the better. Um, oh, and did I mention there's Vikings?
33:42
Yeah, you did. Oh, okay. Okay. Okay. You sold it to me. That should be enough. Um, I signed a pirate adjacent.
33:48
I've never played it. I've never played it. I think you'd love this. I've never played it, but yeah, I I quite fancy it.
33:53
Viking longboats. If you can't do anything on land, you jump in your longboat and go exploring and you fight mythical creatures. And best part about
33:59
it is when you fail or when your people die, they go to Valhalla. So you get
34:05
bonuses for sending them to Valhalla cuz they're happy cuz that's where all Viking warriors
34:10
want to end up and you get bonuses for doing it. So there's a whole I'm going to try this and if it doesn't
34:16
work I'm I'm not I'm not going to get as much but I'm not going to lose out completely. And it was a real Yeah. When
34:23
I think both times I played it, I wasn't brave enough with it. I I tried to kind of overengineer my goes and it just
34:29
didn't work. I think with those sort of things you're like, "Okay, I can't go there. I'm just going to do this instead and kind of not try and not try and
34:36
minimax because I I don't minax games anyway, but I kind of had a strategy in my head and I really suffered for not
34:42
being flexible enough with it. So, I would I'd love to play it again. I really enjoyed it. So, yeah, Champions of Mard for me.
34:47
Yeah, you only go to Valhalla if you buy the expansion cuz if you don't buy the expansion, you don't go to Valhalla. I see.
34:53
And then it's like, oh [ __ ] no Valkyries. No Valkyries for you. No, they're just proper dead. Just dead. Dead.
34:59
I didn't realize it was the expansion because you did your usual thing. was we're going to I'm going to introduce a new game to you and chuck everything in.
35:05
Anyone that owns Champions of Midgard or is thinking about owning it should auto buy the Valhalla expansion because it
35:11
makes it a better game because of that fact that if you crap out on your dice rolls, you get to spend
35:17
those tokens to do something. Yeah. And I think that for me is it's less punishing for it because it would
35:23
be very punishing if the only thing you can do is go exploring and you fail every time. Then that would suck. So the
35:29
fact that the the benefits you get from Valhalla not make it worthwhile but they
35:35
definitely lessen the impact. I didn't realize that. Yeah. No, it's all good. Um just in case anyone's listening going, "Oh, wait. I'll buy it." And then go,
35:41
"Where's this bloody power that Rob said? It's in the expansion, which will automatically be included, I'm sure, in
35:47
your offering to the the Who's Con gods." Oh god. Yeah. Yeah. I'm fun putting in a game. We're going all in.
35:52
We're doing all the game. Yeah. Cool. All right. Be So I've gone for goo. Gong.
35:58
Yeah, mixed it up a little bit. Um, with these kind of picks, I've tried not to pick my classics just because I'm just
36:05
trying to keep it interesting. So, Gong is a it's not really a a bribe game, is it?
36:11
Cuz it's exactly not a bribe, but it is still obviously a bribe. You have to swap your better presence for crapper presence on the board in
36:19
order to gain the what the space there. So, you might be writing deeds which
36:24
maybe make your game better later on. You might be contributing to the Great Wall of China. You might be whispering
36:30
in the ears of cortisans. You might be trundling around a map picking up stuff. Or you might be going on a boat on the
36:38
river to get better versions of things. So absolute worker placement in its I
36:43
mean it I guess it's a little bit hand managementy as well, but the predominant part is choosing which
36:48
space you're going to go. Yeah, it's quite unique in the fact that your worker is the card that you place in the area. Um, so yeah, it's it's
36:56
clever that game. It's very clever. But it's it's it's a nice game. Um, there is an expansion, although I don't
37:02
know that. Yeah, I've not played the expansion yet. You've got my Yeah, I bought it off of you, but I haven't
37:07
played the expansion yet. We should do this. We should do. Let's sort that out cuz I'm When I
37:12
bought that expansion, I was like, "This looks cool." And then time went on and never just saw the light of day. But we should
37:18
absolutely sort that out. Side note, really nice artwork. Um, just a pleasing
37:24
game with lots of variety of how to get ahead. And I love the mechanic in the
37:29
middle where if you don't manage to get to the emperor, it's all in vain. Like forget forget
37:34
everything. You you failed. So if you don't get to that emperor, don't bother even don't bother even
37:40
doing anything. Just leave. I like I like that. I like that. Yeah. Nice. Okay. What about you?
37:46
Mine's an obvious choice and I'm glad that no one else has picked it. So mine's anacrony. Oh, worker
37:53
placement. It's probably my favorite worker placement game. Um, I'm not going to explain it. We've
37:58
talked about it enough, but it's time traveling shenanigans. Same thing with all expansions available.
38:05
Uh, at least fractures of time. At least fractures of time. Cuz to say all expansions with an acronym means every
38:11
freaking module, which I think if you were to have that as in your board game library at Who'scon, right? People are
38:18
like, I just don't know where to start with this thing. And you you're quite right. Just start with base. Don't put
38:23
anything. It's a big beefy game anyway, isn't it? Big beefy box. The infinity box. It is a big beefy box. Bet. It's a lot of bees,
38:30
isn't it? It's a lot of bees. Big box. Yeah. But no, it's what I like about an Acrony
38:36
from it worker placement angle is the fact you've got two separate areas for your workers. You got your big exo suits
38:42
that can go out in the main board because it's contaminated. So, you have to put the workers into the exo suits.
38:47
Very cool. Um, and then you got the worker spaces on your main board, um, where you can activate. So, as you build
38:53
your engine, you get better and better. So, it has this nice two-tier worker placement bit, which I quite enjoy the puzzle of. How do you configure your
39:00
main board so you don't have to go out into the um into the world with your exo
39:05
suits, and I suck at it each time, but I still like it. Doesn't matter. Um, but
39:10
anacron is what I'm throwing in. So, now we've got the hard job, right? So, we've all put a game in. So we've
39:16
got Tivera, Champions of Midgard, Gong, and Anacrony. And we have to do a little vote now. Well, you can't vote for your
39:22
own because that would just be easy, wouldn't it? Yeah. So, we've got a vote for someone else's game that you want to go in. So, if you
39:28
have a little think about it, you got your votes. You got your votes. And I'm just going to go T
39:36
me. Yeah. Anacrony. One for anacrony. 100% anacrony. Two for anacrony.
39:41
Oh, I was going to go civera. So that's a that's a tie.
39:47
So then now can now you can manipulate what wins. It just so happens to be it's not a random chance.
39:53
50/50 baby. So we got we've got a a dead deadlock deadlock. And uh the only way
39:58
we're going to tackle this is through random chance cuz we we can't argue this [ __ ] forever. So um basically um odds
40:06
and evens guys. Um odds will be anacrony and evens will be cavvern. Come on.
40:12
And we've got odd. Oh. So there we go. and acne is going through to who's gone library.
Game 2 - Deck Building
40:17
I would like to play it because I know it's it's it's a lot of people's favorite game. It was the first like heavier game that
40:23
I played big boy game and it was I loved it. It was great. Lovely done.
40:29
Good. It's going in. All right. Next on the uh the agenda, guys, is deck
40:34
building. We need a good deck building game. Um so I'm going to start with Rob this
40:41
time and go around to make things a little bit different. game very close to my heart.
40:46
Arkham Horror. Okay. Yeah. Yeah. Very nice.
40:52
So, the way you build the deck is is the way that you um can manipulate your
40:57
character into the kind of role that they're that they're going to that they're going to play throughout this uh
41:03
this this story. Mhm. Um and just a great game. Just a great
41:08
co-op game. Tense, difficult. Um and Mr. wibbles. Adrian's not going to like
41:13
it. No, he's not here, though. Well, he's not here. So am I. That's That's true.
41:19
He has to play the game we choose. Fair enough. And and that that alone should make you want to.
41:26
Uh but no, the the first game that really got me into the hobby. Um this was the first game I was like,
41:31
"Oh, this there's levels to this shit." and just the whole story driven element, the whole episodic, the whole RPG for
41:40
me, leveling up and and being able to get more stuff that enables you to do more things with and and the way that
41:46
you construct your deck um can can really help in the kind of role that you
41:52
want to provide for your team. So, I I loved it. I absolutely love it. The artwork is fantastic. Yeah.
41:57
Um and it really suits the theme. Um, and I I love games that are set in a
42:04
world and that change. So, you've got Eldrich horror, you got Mansions of Madness, you got Arkham Horror.
42:10
Those games all sit in that same world. So, I know that when I'm playing Mansions, I know the character, but not
42:16
the character in whole, but I know what they're about because I've played them in Arkham
42:21
Horror and I love when I love that whole world building aspect. So, yeah, for me,
42:26
Arkham Horror. Cool. They're key. I've gone for Clank Catacombs.
42:33
Really great. Yeah, I think it's a really great game that is basic enough
42:38
to kind of initiate newbies into it, but it's it's got enough bite that
42:45
actually you do need to kind of have a bit of a plan. I mean, that plan can just be right, one person's gone quick,
42:52
[ __ ] get out of dodge because it's all going to heat up in a minute. Just get movement cards. Yeah. So it is that constant kind of
42:59
balance between right well my character's got a you know I often play the the monkey bot thing which is
43:05
generating a lot of clank which is bad but it does work out well for you in a bit. So but you do need to make sure
43:10
you're keeping your eyes on the movement card you have um a lot of the cards do that thing where you can if you the
43:18
react thing so you playing it in your hand so you can still pick another card. So it is about the kind of the the deck
43:24
that you're curating. You play it over and over and over again and you can sometimes try and get some of the crap
43:30
out. So it's with the expansion as well then. Absolutely. I've never actually played it without the expansion. So um
43:36
Oh, the adventurers. It maybe it doesn't have to add the latest expansion which I again haven't actually played a game with yet but um
43:43
yeah bit of a table hog I will say that. So, we're going to have to have big tables at this con because it can get a
43:50
bit mon if you kind of realize you keep pulling tiles on one half, you've got to shovel the whole thing across the table,
43:57
which is a bit of a pain in the ass. But great game. Um, doesn't really suffer from much AP, I
44:03
don't think, because you're drawing five cards, you're doing those five things. All you've got to decide is which direction you go and and you can see
44:09
that. Yeah. how you steer your deck until then someone turns a card over that turns all your tiles around and
44:14
you're like, "God damn it, I had a great I had a great little route there and now it's all to pot." But great game. Um,
44:21
haven't played any of the other games, the other Clank games, but I I I guess I know what they felt like.
44:26
It's the best version of them. Yeah, that's that's what I hear and I can see why cuz it like I say the route
44:31
changes every time and it's just great. Who doesn't like drawing dragon cubes out of a bag and burning all your friends lives?
44:37
That's a great game. Brilliant. Especially when you're dead. Yeah. Cuz then you you take more pleasure out. Yeah. And that's what, you know, the
44:43
player elimination or escaped early. Yeah. The player elimination part. Um, like I say, Yeah. Or if you've escaped
44:49
early, you still get to have a real Yeah. You know, part of the game, which is fantastic. Sounds cool. Um, mine again, it's
44:57
obvious. What do you think I'm going to pick for deck building? Captain's chair. Absolutely. Captain's chairs going in.
45:02
Um, not for noobs, I would say. Um, it's heavy. It's crunchy.
45:08
It it makes your brain run white hot a lot of the time trying to figure out how is this working? What am I supposed to
45:13
do? But I freaking love it. And they announced recently the second box. So
45:18
it's just make basic get me more excited about more expansions. Yeah, exactly. Another six captains are
45:24
coming and another three in an expansion as well. So that's nine new captains plus the six
45:30
I already have. Oh my god. How are you going to fit them all in the original box in those lovely little plastic boxes that we've all got now?
45:36
That is the only thing until whiskers do a big box. I'm sure David will sort out.
45:42
Yeah. So, I'm just going to put in Star Trek Captain's Chair cuz it's my obvious choice for deck building. So,
45:48
yeah. T uh my obvious choice is uh Marvel Champions. Uh yeah, of course. Going down that kind of arm.
45:54
This is an awesome deck building game as in you got so many different you got four well five different aspects if you call the pool one and you can just make
46:02
your own hero with your own kind of aspect. Mhm. Aggressive, protection, and also I will
46:08
just throw in, you can actually deck build your own villain. Put all your different modules into a villain as well. You can.
46:14
Yeah. So, there's so much variety and so much difference in it. You can give like Rhino the Infinity,
46:19
which is nuts. And I tried it and I died. Yeah. But just like that. So, it makes a
46:25
great fun and it's one of my favorite. Yeah. All time. Solid choice, mate. Solid choice. Solid choice.
46:31
Right. So, voting then starting with the old vote. So, we've got Arkham Horror LCG, Clank Catacomb,
46:36
Star Trek Captain's Chair, and Marvel Champions. Rob, where's your vote going, sir? El Capitano, my man.
46:43
El Capitano. Star Treko. All right, it's a one for Star Trek. I've got to go Arkham Horror. I haven't
46:49
played any of the other three, but I think that one would be up my street. I think you would love that game. Yeah. This committee aside for a minute,
46:57
I should try Arkham Horror LCG. I think you would like to borrow more than
47:02
welcome. Yeah, I think you're doing okay. You're going Arkham. Oh, this is tough for me.
47:08
You can't choose Star Trek Captain's Chair. No, I I know. That's why it's tough. This is why this this is kind of genius
47:14
and madness at the same time. You know what? I'm going to go Arkham because
47:19
I've got a lot of fond memories of Arkham. I played it before Marvel Champion. Sorry, T. No, you're right. And uh I didn't think it would win. I I
47:27
think I think it's brilliant, but I know why I don't play it anymore, but it's
47:32
brilliant. Once you've done that story, it's just Yeah. Anyway,
47:37
T, I'm going to go with Arkham Horror. Wow. Full almost. The only reason I choose Clank is
47:44
No, that's Arkham Horror cuz Clank is I played it so much. I love Clank, but Arkham Horror I've actually bought my own copy recently.
47:49
That was part of it for me. I've played a lot of Clank and I haven't played Arkham Horror in close to four years.
47:54
Yeah. Maybe even a bit longer. I think something that's got that kind of storydriven thing, if it's a good
48:00
story, you're just hooked in, aren't you? Yeah, it does make replayability a little bit less, which I think Clank probably takes.
48:06
However, if you get into a good story, you're thinking about it. You're wanting to know which way it goes. And that's
48:11
that's a great place to be, isn't it? Lot of content for that game now. So, actually, even if you did the story and
48:17
played all the other stuff, you'd probably forgotten the story by the time you move back around. When you said I'd I'd like to play it, I' I I'd happily go
Game 3 - Hand Management
48:24
through it again. Now I'm like, "Yeah, I' I'd love to play that game again." And Captain Chair I enjoyed, but I like
48:30
to play it again. I only played it once, so I'd like to try it again. Yeah. I need more opinion on it, to be honest. That's fair. I enjoyed it. You need more
48:36
than one game. Yeah. You need one more game cuz the learning game's never the starting, is it? Especially with that one. Yeah. Yeah. Right. Next one. Hand management.
48:43
So managing your hands. I know everyone thinks I'm going to say Art Nova, but I'm not. I'm not. I'm
48:50
going to go for Zuli. Yeah. Because that is hand manageable. It's quick.
48:56
It's really, really accessible. Yeah. So, if we're thinking about a convention, if it's going to be a
49:01
convention for just kind of I don't want to say old people like us, but people of our age, then then maybe it's not a
49:08
great game for everybody, but everyone can get joy out of Zulie. And it's easy,
49:13
quick, and easy to learn, but it's a little bit more than just a Yeah.
49:18
fierce and friendly animals. Yeah. And it's and the artwork's great. I mean, I guess you could also pick Moving Wild if you wanted a bit of
49:24
variety of the artwork, but I like the original. Original and best for me. Yeah, absolutely. Absolutely. Good choice. Um, I sticking
49:32
with my theme of heavy [ __ ] Liz Boa uh
49:37
for me is one of the ultimate hand management games cuz it literally is about play a card, draw a card. That is
49:44
your game with lots of complicated [ __ ] in the middle. That happens. Um, but the
49:49
whole thing is wrapped around the simplicity of you play a card and then you draw one at the end of your
49:55
turn. Now, where you play it into what area in your board or the the main board and yeah, I won't go into it, but I love
50:03
it for the fact that you're trying to get the right craft of of cards into your hands so that you can basically run
50:09
that bloody engine and and win and rebuild Lisbon in 1755 or whatever it
50:15
is. So yeah, Lisbar. What about you, mate? Uh, mine would be Nemesis. Nemesis? Yeah, hand management. Yes.
50:22
Yeah, cuz it's one hand of the character. You don't get any more cards. You just get contamination cards and it's just simple fun.
50:28
I didn't think of that one. That's a good point. No, I didn't didn't even cross my mind. Yeah, Nemesis. Love it. So, Nemesis of all iterations, should we
50:35
say? Yeah. Well, the carnomorphs, that's what I'll bring with me to this. Carnomorph. Love it. It's a good choice.
50:43
All right. Nemesis is in. I've got two and I really do. You can't have two. The committee only allows one.
50:50
Okay. Okay. Cut nora. Cut nora. Yeah. Cuz your actions are
50:58
based off of the cards that you have. So they're they're dualsided. H. Sorry. They're they're dualended.
51:04
Yes. So depending on which way round they are, it's as to how and you only get four actions per round.
51:11
I can't remember. You play four. I'm pretty sure it's four actions. I think you get two actions.
51:19
I can't remember. I can't remember. I I need I need to look cuz I think you get eight cards. I think you get four actions. I think I
51:26
can't was it six cards and Yeah, probably might be seven, but it might even be five.
51:31
It's between three and eight. Um but because of your your hand size,
51:37
because they're the the way that the cards are displayed, you have to do one action or the other. So you quite often
51:44
you're torn between I want that card but I need to do this more and yeah so for
51:49
me I'd say Kahora. All right so we've got Zuli Lisbbor and Nemesis and Kahora. So Becky
51:56
it's got to be Nemesis for me. Nemesis. If I can't be Zulie it's got to be Nemesis. Great game. Always a good story
52:02
line at the end. Nice bit of backstabbing. Yeah. Brilliant. I'm in as well. You know why? Like cuz I
52:08
actually sold all my Nemesis stuff but I think I'm about ready to play it again. This is why you shouldn't sell.
52:14
I'm happy to have sold it cuz I know TE's got it all. That's fine. My point is got all sex.
52:20
I can I can still access it, but it's on Te's terms now and I'm all right with that. Um, so Nemesis cuz I just fancy
52:27
playing it. So, yeah. Unfortunately, I've never played Rob's game, so I can't even. But I'm going to go with Lisba.
52:33
Okay. One for Lizoa. Like, love the game. It's good. Yeah. Zulie. Zuli. I didn't think much of Zulie,
52:39
unfortunately. So, fair enough. All right. I've really enjoyed and I can't vote on yours cuz I didn't know really
52:44
not played it [ __ ] You still vote on a game. Oh, that's true. All right. I could say
Game 4 - Abstract
52:50
what it was. I could You didn't want to do silver mining and uh check Czech Republic or Czechovakia
52:58
at the time. It's a great game. I'm sure. There we go. Nemesis has gone through. Nice. Oh yeah.
53:04
Okay. Next uh category is abstract category which is a difficult one but I threw it in just because it is difficult
53:10
to think of abstract games let alone other than chess. If people pick that then fair enough. Um I'll start this
53:16
one. Uh so I'm going to start with an Uve Rosenberg game Framework.
53:23
Oh I love that cuz I was thinking what what abstract games do I really enjoy? I don't enjoy
53:29
loads of them. Um but Framework's one that's just tried and tested. It's just
53:34
so simple. Putting tiles down, trying to link these frames together, the puzzle
53:39
that you create in your own making and going, "Yeah, I'll put that tile there." And you go, "Shit, why did I put that
53:45
tile there?" And uh you're basically ticking off goals and yeah, it's just cool. Plays in half hour and uh it's a
53:52
solid little abstract game. Um and that's why it's going in framework.
53:59
Nice. Nice. Mine is a majong. It's got so much good family memories of Mahjang
54:05
and it's just bricks. It's a classic. It's a Chinese version of uh
54:10
Solitaire. Yeah. Something like And yeah, fast-paced. Throw it in. It's got winds and dragons for some reason.
54:16
And it's got flowers for some reason and Yeah. And this is just great. Love it. Um and it's Yeah. It's very
54:22
spill your drink on it. It's still fine. Yeah. Yeah. Y I've played it loads. Absolutely loads.
54:28
It's a good game. It's a great game. Well, I had to Google what abstract games are. Yeah.
54:34
What did it tell you? Well, out of the list, I was like, "Oh, that's great." Sagrada.
54:39
Yeah, I did. That was That was a close second for me, that one. So, we we played at Expo. Loved it.
54:46
It's the game where I've almost convinced me that my wife would enjoy
54:52
it. Yeah, it's a good game. But I know she won't because she might. She won't. But that's the point is it's
54:57
made me go, "Oh, she might she might really like that game." She hates board games. She hates board games. She doesn't hate board games. She
55:03
hates the idea of learning board games. I get it. But I think she'd enjoy that.
55:09
It's like it's it's the closest to Sudoku. Yeah. And that's why I think she'd enjoy it,
55:15
but she'd never tell me if she did enjoy it. Do you know what I mean? It would be She'll never tell you because you you'll
55:20
get too excited. Exactly. But I genuinely think she'd like it. And it's put me in that real quandry of do I buy it and try and cuz I
55:29
really enjoyed it. I' I'd borrow it. Yeah, if you want to borrow. I've made myself a little dice tower. That's a cigar. Have you got it?
55:34
Yeah. Gears. It was like one of the first games I ever bought. Yeah, cool. I'll buy that. I I'll borrow
55:40
it. That'd be great. Thank you. That solves that quandry. So once you've done like a like it then get artisans and
55:46
then you get coloring book. You can play a legacy version of it. Anyway, Sigrada.
55:51
Nice. So mine is canvas. Yeah. Okay. Canva arts.
55:56
Although I think I should have picked some of the others that you've picked because I like them bare, but that's fine. Actually, know canvas is a really
56:02
good game. Um you're creating artwork. Yeah. Um could really be the theme is is
56:08
tacked on. Doesn't matter. Those sort of acetate pieces that you're layering on top of each other to create your artwork
56:14
is such a good use of like so it's a bit of hand management. It's a bit of sort of set set collection sort of. Um
56:22
you're trying to either get certain symbols, certain colors or collections of things in your
56:28
artwork and then it comes up with a two-word description of your artwork. It comes up with that. You don't come up with that, which are just silly
56:34
nonsense, but it's just really nice. Nice. So yeah, canvas. There we go. So we have framework,
56:40
mahjong, cigrada, and canvas. Um tricky. I'm going majong
56:47
because I haven't played it for donkeys years. The last time I played it was probably on the computer on the PC and
56:52
now me too playing with the tactile little clicky clacky pieces.
56:58
I'm I want I want to play Mahong. I've just got a vibe for it. So I'm going with Marjong.
57:04
Okay. So I'm going to go with I like a bit of I' never played it but never lets me down. So I'm going to go framework.
57:10
Framework framework. Never let me down. Fair enough. Framework for me. Framework. Have you played it, Rob?
57:15
Yeah. Oh, played it with you. We did. It's been a while. I really enjoyed it as well.
57:21
It's cool. Do I pick Framework or do I pick Sagrada? Doesn't really matter cuz Framework's going through. I'm going to
Game 5 - Area Control
57:27
pick Sagrada because I think it deserves a mention. Deserves a little does it cuz it's a really good game. All right. Framework is the one that's
57:33
going I love Framework. So, that's I'm happy with that. I'm good. It's good. All right. That's abstract done. And next is
57:39
probably uh for me personally a difficult um category which is area
57:45
control. I threw it in because I can't pick all my favorites. T hates area.
57:51
Area control is not my favorite. Not my favorite. It's not my favorite. It's not mine either. I don't mind it. It's not my favorite.
57:56
But some people like it, right? And we got to pick these games for who's con and hopefully they'll have a good time. So going back to you T, what have you
58:04
got for area control, mate? And why? Star Wars Rebellion. Nice. That's awesome. The area control feel of
58:11
that is horrible when the empire is just controlling all the planets and you're cornered unless you're the empire. Yeah, that's what I'm saying. Yeah, the
58:17
empire unless the empire here. So if the empire is controlling the whole of the
58:22
rebellion is just in the corner hiding. Yeah. And it's great. Such a good feel of Star Wars. I mean Yeah. There's nothing there's no
58:29
game Star Wars game that feels like Star Wars as much as Rebellion to me. And if you're playing as the rebellion, you
58:35
feel like you're outclassed, outgunned, outmatched, and up against it. And
58:41
that's just what you want as the rebellion, right? It's like, "No, we're going to die every step of the way, but
58:46
you scrape it through. It's brilliant." Yeah. Brilliant. Yeah. Right. Rebellion it is. Rob,
58:52
that's a great shout. Rebellion. For me, I've got two. Mhm. But the one I had the most fun with, and I don't think it's kind of
58:59
thought of as an area control game, but I'm going to put it in and then explain why is Mosaic.
59:06
Okay. Yeah, there's many things that though, isn't it? It's many things, but watching you and
59:11
Davey fight over one tile for an hour was hilarious.
59:18
then complain that Curley won the game and I didn't challenge him enough because you two were messing around over
59:24
what essentially was quarter of a tile was hilarious. So for me, I'd say Mosaic
59:32
and I know it's a versatile game as well. So you sure you mean mosaic or do you mean tapestry? The reason JP's saying that is
59:38
because we we went to play Mosaic and I thought I'd do my due diligence
59:44
uh beforehand and I learned how to play tapestry instead of mosaic. So when the board came out and I was
59:50
like what the hell is this? Where's all the tracks around the edge? No, that's that's tapestry. A [ __ ]
59:56
But I suppose it shows good intentions and I did my effort. It was just in the wrong area. Misided and misplaced. Well,
1:00:04
it's okay because the game I'm saying is Tapestry because that's a segue that we didn't even know.
1:00:10
There you go. Because I don't really get on with area control games. Inish was a close one cuz I did like
1:00:16
that game and that is sort of very very solidly area control. Yeah. But but I did like it. But with Tapestry, you've
1:00:23
got that variety. Yeah. You've got your tracks. Area control is just one part of the puzzle. Yes. In the same way that area control
1:00:30
is one part of the puzzle in sort of terraforming Mars or something, but it isn't the main of the game. No, but I
1:00:35
think Tapestry is area control. It's got a chunk of it and that's the game I like the best out of those kind of games.
1:00:41
That makes sense. You're allowed it. It's there. It features it. It doesn't have to be entirely area control. It can
1:00:46
be whatever you want it to be. And the models are really nice. And I love that kind of going up a track kind of a game.
1:00:51
Yeah. Fair play. There we go. Um I'm picking Roth.
1:00:57
Okay. with a W. Yeah, because it's changed my my feelings on
1:01:03
area control. I don't like those genres. I've tried so many area control games like Inish is had it, tried it. Just
1:01:11
something about it. I don't know. It's the It's too I don't know if it's the confrontation of it or I just find it
1:01:17
stressful. But yeah, but Roth is just stupid and uh and it has dice drafting
1:01:22
in it. So I I love dice drafting. So it's kind of like dice drafting. Yay. Area control. don't really care, but
1:01:28
somehow this it works. It just works for what it is. And uh yeah, and I talked about it at the expo
1:01:34
episode and I just had such a blast. So that's for me going in and it just looks mental neon. Everything's neon and like
1:01:43
ah colors. I came over just as you were finishing that game. Yeah. And the rockous laughter coming from the
1:01:50
table was amazing. It's just different and and cool. So there we go. So, we got Star Wars
1:01:56
Rebellion, Mosaic, Tapestry, and Rough. Those are very different corners of area control, which is cool. So, Star Mutes,
1:02:03
please. Um, out of all them, I think it's Tapestry. One for Tapestry. I love Rebellion, but it's got to be
1:02:10
Tapestry. Two for Tapestry. I'm going to go for Roth. One for Roth because it sounds colorful and I like
1:02:16
it. Yeah. Star Wars Rebellion. I don't mind Star Wars. Mosaic. Oh god, the box is too big. Doesn't fit in a Calax. I've got
1:02:22
bad vibes with that game. Yeah, I pop. Well, you don't really need to pop much of it. Just that's how I felt about it.
1:02:29
But Roth sounds sounds colorful if nothing else. Um I I've got about my boy Rebellion, I'm afraid. Um I think I didn't even
1:02:36
consider it. No, I didn't consider it as area control, but it is, but it's not one that I immediately
1:02:42
thought of, but I'm like, damn, I need to play some Rebellion. I've only ever played it as the Rebels.
1:02:48
I've never played as the Empire. So, I've spent that whole two, three hours going, "Shit, [ __ ] [ __ ] sweetheart."
Game 6 - Tile Placement
1:02:54
Just sweating. So bad. I don't like it. And then you see that second Death Star come down the track. Oh, no.
1:03:00
So, I've only ever played it with the terror feeling, not the the overpowered feeling.
1:03:06
All right, next one. Tile placement. It's like the the mechanic of putting a
1:03:12
tile onto a board or something. Um, so Rob, what are you going for?
1:03:17
Galaxy trucker. Galaxy Trucker. What a solid choice. It's an ultimate title. I really want to play this game. I so
1:03:23
want to play. Me too. Me too. T so good. I keep wanting to buy it and I don't need to, but
1:03:29
it's ridiculous nonsense and it's great. Yeah. Sounds Sounds right up my street.
1:03:35
Yeah. Chaos personified. It's brilliant. You can plan all you want. It makes no difference whatsoever
1:03:42
as long as you go in with it. Cuz the first time I played it, I didn't know what it was. So when I went in I was
1:03:48
like, "Oh." And then half my ship disappeared in the first round. I'm like, "Oh no." Like there's me done. And
1:03:54
then we started the second round. I was like, "Ah, I get it now." And it's it's silly nonsense and it's great.
1:04:00
Yep. It's Galaxy. Yeah. I've gone for Azul. Azul.
1:04:06
So you are literal literal tile placement thematically and mechanically.
1:04:11
Portuguese tile placing. Yeah. Just a nice It's more abstract, I think, than tile placement. But you are
1:04:16
placing tiles. So, I've picked it. In every sense of it, you are. And they're very clicky, clacky pieces.
1:04:22
Yeah, they look like chew it. They do look like glossy chew it. Yep. And you don't bite them. Don't bite
1:04:27
them. Break your tooth. Uh, cool. I'm going for Rebirth. So, um,
1:04:34
Ry Kitia classic Rebirth. Uh, again, a genre I'm not a big lover of, but
1:04:41
Rebirth I really love. Now, the only problem with Rebirth, I need it needs some more maps because there's only two, but I'm sure
1:04:48
that's going to come in the future. But yeah, very chill, very zen, playing under an hour and it's cool. It's nicely
1:04:55
produced. It's good game. Really like What have you got, pal? Carazone.
1:05:00
Yeah, I mean the travel game. I played it out with my brother played it loads and I love it.
1:05:06
It's so zen as well. Making your own little nice little French village. Yeah,
1:05:11
it's very nice. It was good. Yeah. There we go. Oh, this is hard now, isn't it? Galaxy trucker as all rebirth and
1:05:17
carcasson. Robot. I can't pick my own. So, Rebirth
1:05:22
one for Rebirth. Carcasson because it's what kind of one
1:05:29
of my original games that got me into this. So, and I'm sure I'm going to like Galaxy Trucker, but I haven't played it. So,
1:05:35
I'm going to go for go what you know, right? Yeah. I really want to play Galaxy Stroke, so I want it come to come to this thing. So
1:05:40
Galaxy Trucker. Oh, you're going Galaxy Trucker. That's it. I was as well. So, literally that's
1:05:46
where I was going. So, Galaxy Trucker is going through. Yeah. Good.
1:05:52
Insert noise there, which I probably won't cuz I can't be asked. Um,
1:05:58
well, I want to play Galaxy Trucker, so I'm happy with that. I'll let you guys borrow it from like Oh, it's just funny. Anytime. It's It's silly nonsense.
1:06:05
20. Just just do it and force Curly to buy and video it. I I wanted it for ages and the only
1:06:12
reason I bought it was cuz Check Games were so good to us. They were so lovely, weren't they? That I was like, do you know what? I wanted this game and I I want to support
1:06:19
them and I don't like SETI. So that's the other So that's that's the other way I can do
1:06:25
it. That's that's the expansion for SEI will be there
1:06:31
soon. I know I know why it's a good game. It's just not for me. You know what I mean? I know it's a good game. Tight as balls.
Game 7 - Co-op
1:06:36
It's just when I sat there for quite literally 45 minutes while you guys were still taking turns.
1:06:42
That that that's when for me I was like, I don't think this game's for me. I don't know if I like this. But yeah, but no, I get why. But yeah, I
1:06:48
didn't want to. So yeah, I bought Galaxy Truck. I was so glad I did. Fair enough. Right. Uh penultimate
1:06:54
category. It's co-op games. Rob games as I like to call them. Um so Becky, what have you got for your nomination for
1:07:01
co-op games? I have gone unfathomable. Unfathomable. [Applause]
1:07:07
So love it. It's you can make some great kind of ambience playlists for it.
1:07:12
You should. It's in the world of the Eldrich horror kind of stuff. The Arkham Files.
1:07:18
Yeah. So you're in that kind of weird and wonderful world. Um changes every time because you just
1:07:24
don't know who is against you and who is for you. Nice bit of social deduction. Just love it. Yeah. Solid choice.
1:07:31
Solid choice. Mine is Slay the Spire. Oh [ __ ] [ __ ]
1:07:36
So I chose So it sounds like we may have some clashes here. But uh the reason why I
1:07:42
chose it is because basically me and my son have been
1:07:48
playing a lot of it. And I finally found a game that he will like be interested in playing. And we
1:07:55
have to do an act a time and we have to save it because it it will run long if you do all three. I think you'll be
1:08:01
there for four hours plus um doing that. So yeah, we do an act which is about an hour,
1:08:07
hour and a half max. And uh yeah, it's just enough for him to get into it and I can tell that he's getting it cuz he's
1:08:14
like reading the cards and he's like, "Right, yeah, but if I do that and I do this, this will be more efficient." I'm like, "Oh, he's getting proud of you.
1:08:20
He's getting it." Um, I just wish we were better as a team to actually get past act two cuz we suck. Uh, cuz we got
1:08:26
to do it. But Slay the Spire is what I'm putting in. Love it. So T, unfortunately we're playing by the
1:08:32
rules, mate. Slay the Spire. Slay the Spire. Right. Slay the Spire. Sorry, mate. I Same with you, mate. We
1:08:37
love that game. And it's been burnt. It's been evaporated in front of us. Oh no. But that's fair enough. It's a great game to introduce to people
1:08:44
for deck building, I think, as well. Simple. Yeah. And you just give Iron Heart. Just play that and you'll be fine and just go for
1:08:50
It's a great game. Oh, well, Rob, this this was quite a difficult category
1:08:55
for me. What co-op game? There's so many. You've got all of them. I know. I don't have all of them. Um,
1:09:03
and I'm still I still don't know which one I'm going to pick. So, well, which one did you pick? Cuz you
1:09:08
would have had one picked. Oh, okay. Yeah. Elder Scrolls.
1:09:14
Okay. I said [ __ ] because I thought, ah, there's the winner.
1:09:20
And now it's gone. So yeah, Elder Scrolls betrayal of the second era. Chip theory
1:09:25
just Oh, so goddamn good. Bloody heavy though, isn't it? It was carrying them.
1:09:30
Me and Curly had to carry it. Pecking thing. I had to carry it all the way through hall three and 3A into hall
1:09:37
four. If I got commission from Chip Theory that weekend, you should have. I I would have done all right. I reckon
1:09:42
I would have done all right. Um sold a few copies, didn't you? I sold a couple copies, but it's just Oh, it's beautiful. It's still in the
1:09:50
box. We haven't even opened it in our house. It's still sat exactly where I put it. Curly's asked me to come around after we
1:09:56
get back from America. And I think that might be the reason why. That could well be it, mate. Yeah, it could be it. I mean, as much as he wants
1:10:02
to see your lovely face. Yeah, he wants organized. Yeah, you to. Right. Well, play the rules. Slay the
1:10:08
spire is uh combusted. Uh so the choice is basically unfathomable or Elder
1:10:13
Scrolls. So, um, yeah, Becky, well, I've got to You got to choose Elder Scrolls. Of
1:10:18
course, I don't want to pick it because it's too heavy. Yeah, I think I It's very nicely made though, isn't it?
1:10:24
It's beautiful. It is. And I'll pick Elder Scrolls. Yeah. Unfathomable for me. Oh, I would love to play Elder Scrolls,
1:10:29
please. But So, you're you're going to have to force it into a a tie. Yeah, cuz you've got to pick.
1:10:35
You got to pick Unfathomable. So, there we go. So, we're going to have to do You know what? I'm not upset.
1:10:40
They're both I haven't played Elder Scrolls, but With the love it's getting, I'm guessing it's pretty. I think it's a co-op game. It's a fully
1:10:46
co-op game. Elder Scrolls is better. Okay. Right. So, we're going to go odd Elder
1:10:53
Scrolls evens. Unfathomable. Come on, dice. Jesus. It is evens. So, unfathomable is going to Who's con?
Game 8 - Dice Drafting
1:11:00
And Elder Scrolls quite probably quite rightly stay at home. It's too heavy. Do you know what? I'm right with that. You're not going to be able to do it in
1:11:06
a weekend anyway, are you? So, no. Even if you played that fully at the weekend. Yeah, I'm all right with that. I love
1:11:12
Unfallable. So, and and it scratches that Arkham horror itch. Yep. So, comes to our last category,
1:11:18
which is one of my favorite mechanisms. Dice drafting. Don't know why it's my favorite. I just like it. It's fun. Dice
1:11:26
and you draft them. Um, so starting with me, I'm going with
1:11:32
probably There's quite a few choices here, but I I I'm going with what picked is perseverance,
1:11:39
dinosaurs, and dice drafting. I need to play this game. I haven't played it probably for over a year
1:11:45
and I need to do it. I need to rectify and remedy this situation, but um you
1:11:50
can ask me which episode. I'll just say all of them cuz they're all fun in their different ways. So, I'm going
1:11:56
Perseverance. What have you got to I'm going with Minos Minos.
1:12:01
I mean I mean the dice mechanic in that is very unique and that's why it's awesome and
1:12:06
it's a great game so it deserves a place. It's good. It's a good dice drafting game. Yeah.
1:12:12
Yeah. And you obviously after you draft them and where you put them and the number, everything, the color, the number, where
1:12:18
it goes, everything bloody matters and it wrecks you. Um, but yeah, there we go.
1:12:25
In in in the interest of history, can I cheat or not? No. Why would you pick minus a
1:12:33
great like I loved it. I I absolutely
1:12:38
not very complex game, but there's a lot of elements to it. I think that's about my limit of heaviness that I'd like and
1:12:44
I loved it. I thought it was fantastic. Um, sorry T. Yeah. I should have gone for my second
1:12:49
option. I should have gone for my second option. Talent. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Mine was White Castle,
1:12:55
but just for the uniqueness of mine, that's why I want it for me cuz that Yeah, I nearly went White Castle purely for the bridge.
1:13:00
Yeah. Thanks to the bridge, Becky, my option is Kabutos.
1:13:07
Oh. Oh, yeah. My my brain was going to kabuto sumo and I was thinking that's
1:13:13
what I thought. But kabutos. Yes. Yes. Yeah. I mean, everything is a cube, which is in the whole premise of being
1:13:20
dice, right? So, you are getting around a track and drafting your dice as you go
1:13:25
along. Brilliant game. Just a fun race. Silly, silly nonsense.
1:13:32
Stupid. It's a cube cup. But it's great. Why not? It's great. Let's do it.
1:13:37
Well, we got two choices, guys, cuz you've eliminated yourself. I thought it was new enough that I could
1:13:43
have got away with it. Do you know what I mean? My favorite. Yeah. Kitos then has to be for me.
1:13:49
So, it's really down to to the knockouts and where you want it to go. Perseverance.
1:13:54
Perseverance. Perseverance. I know. Dinosaurs. Yeah. I need to pick that one.
1:14:00
And I have to pick Perseverance, even though I don't want to because I don't want anything to do with dinosaurs. Sick
1:14:05
of them. Sick of that with your husband with his fetish. Yeah. Um, so we're going to go for the roll. We're going to say uh Perseverance
1:14:12
Dinosaurs are evens. And we're going to say Kabitos are odd because it is odd. It is quite odd.
1:14:17
It is odd. Come on, Kabitos. Come on. And it's even [ __ ] So, can we can we actually see the
1:14:23
screen? There you go. Okay. Is that a four? Perseverance takes it. That's a four. Checking.
1:14:29
Checking. I'm cheating. There we go. Committee members, we have our draft. We have our board game library of anacrony for work placement.
1:14:36
Arkham Horror LCG for deck building. Nemesis for a bit of hand management. Abstract with framework. Area control
1:14:43
was tapestry. Tapestry. I didn't actually take that one, so thank you. Tire placement is
1:14:49
Galaxy Trucker and a bit of co-op shenanigans with unfathomable. And dice drafting with dinosaurs. Perseverance.
1:14:56
That is a weekend. Yeah, I love it. That is a weekend of gaming. It's quite heavy though, isn't it? It is quite heavy. Quite
1:15:01
heavy. But we haven't got any break. Yeah. No quick ones. We know. Yeah. We didn't curate this probably for the right audience. If we if this was
1:15:07
going to be real and actually we knew our audience, we might have picked different games. Oh, I probably would. I
1:15:12
just went selfish. I'll be honest. If this was real, this weekend has just turned into a week.
1:15:18
That's true. Yeah. Well, we're going to have to start playing at 6:00 in the morning. There's no breakfast at this convention. It's
1:15:23
It's game to wall game. Oh, it's four days long. Yeah. Yeah. Easily. Well, some of these games
1:15:29
are are long ones, aren't they? There you go. Just thought it'd be a bit of fun. Something to think about. What? You know, I'm not upset with the lineup.
1:15:36
It's not my lineup. I'm not upset with I'm not upset with it. But that's the point of the draft, right? It's never the one that you
1:15:42
probably wanted, but you add a little bit of a sprinkling of your ingredients in there and we've got this cake in
TURN 4 - Receive, Sleeve or Leave
1:15:49
front of us. It's board game cake. Yeah. Great British B. Yeah. Yeah. Exactly. And uh who knows if
1:15:54
it tastes like [ __ ] or not. That's that's got dinosaur flavors on the top. So I'm not a fan.
1:16:00
There you go. Thanks, guys. And um let's move on to the next segment.
1:16:15
Now it's time for some receive, sleeve, or leave where we talk about some games that we have to decide on whether we
1:16:21
want to receive them, leave them or leave them. Um, so the three games that are kind of loosely connected. Um, which
1:16:27
always probably makes it a difficult one for me, which is always a sign for me. It's a good one. Um, are kind of dice,
1:16:34
influence, workers is probably what I'm going to say. Um so the three games are
1:16:39
uh teacon which is difficult to say and Lorenzo Il Magnificico and Tua or Tro if
1:16:48
you want to pronounce it differently. I'm wrong. Like a peasant. Like a peasant and a heathen. Um so
1:16:56
yeah, those are the three games. I'm looking at Rob think he's probably not played any of these. Have you?
1:17:02
I've played one. Have you? Yes. You played Lorenzo? I did. You have? Yeah.
1:17:07
So anyway, yeah, sleeve. I'll go first. I already know where I'm going. Go on then. Um, I would sleeve Lorenzo.
1:17:16
Sleeve it. I really enjoyed it. That's a lie. Tell your face. Last time I played that with you, you
1:17:22
hated it. I think the biggest problem with it is I didn't figure out the game until the
1:17:27
last round. Yeah. Or or the or the penultimate round. And I was like, "Oh, I get it now." Yeah.
1:17:32
And by then by no engine by then it was too late. So, I enjoyed it. I'd leave it. I'd happily play it again.
1:17:39
That's a lie. I'd play it again when I'm in the right mood to play that sort of game. Yeah. Um, which was fine. Um, I would receive
1:17:47
Tia Wakan. Yeah. Just because that is the most fun to say ever. Lorenzo Magnificico is amazing to
1:17:54
say, but Takan is just brilliant and it's Aztecs. What's not what's not to love? I mean, Troy or Tua Tua, it just
1:18:03
sounds boring. You can keep that [ __ ] It's anything but boring, mate. That's good. Sounds boring.
1:18:10
It's quite naive. It sounds boring. Yeah. I'm out. Nicking your dice and use them for something else. And Yeah. Know, it's
1:18:16
good. Yeah. Yeah. That that's the one I know absolutely nothing about other than
1:18:21
Curly says it wrong just to annoy you every single time. For that, I can respect it, but uh but it's not for me.
1:18:26
It's always French named Town Games like or it's like no Orleans. It's like no,
1:18:33
it's Oon. He's like, "No, it's Orleans. Shut up, Curly." Uh, but yes. And and
1:18:38
Wizards and Tracer. He knows it pisses me. It does. It was getting me angry now thinking about him. Never mind.
1:18:43
He's not even here. He's not even here. And that's why we love him. He's not even here. Anyway, Becky.
1:18:49
Oh, this is tricky. So, I'm going to um sleeve Tua because I was so pleased to
1:18:55
actually manage to get a copy of it. Have you got the expansion? No, I haven't. Yeah,
1:19:00
I saw Ladies of Tua. Yeah, I saw the expansion before I bought the original.
1:19:06
I think it was in like a bring a buy a long time ago, but I didn't buy it. Uh, so I'm going to receive Lorenzo El
1:19:12
Magnificico cuz I remember it being good because of your crappy cousin who's too useless to do anything. That's just a
1:19:18
great mechanic in a in a game. Yeah. This is my cousin Timmy. He's rubbish and we have to watch him all the
1:19:23
time. Yeah, but he gets to do other Yeah. So, I like that was good. And I haven't played tier
1:19:30
tactic that I haven't played that one. Hadukan is the name. So that that can go. I'm afraid it might
1:19:36
be amazing. But yeah, I'm a firm believer in stick with what you know. You stick with what you know. It's like
1:19:41
going into a restaurant and going I know I like that that menu and that dish. Absolutely. That's why I'm more than
1:19:46
that's why I get the same same takeaway order every time. You know what you like. You know what
1:19:53
you like too. Um, so sleing is the one you collect the most, right? You want to keep the one you protect. Yeah, it's the one you want to like
1:19:58
Lorenzo definitely. I love it. Go play a great Lorenzo. Steve and Lorenzo.
1:20:04
And I'm going to twarking. Just go. Well, I say I've never played it. I wouldn't like dislike
1:20:10
it, but I think you'd like it. I like it, but I've never played it, so it has to be the one that I don't know. And um, how do you say it?
1:20:17
Teot Wakan. Teayotakan. That's close. That's close. I've played that a couple times for many years now.
1:20:24
We played a few time. I enjoyed it. It was good. Yeah. I just enjoyed it. You know what? I can say that game now because I had to learn how to say it on
1:20:30
like YouTube. So, if you ever go like, "How do I pronounce this thing?" And it breaks it down phonetically. I had to do
1:20:37
it cuz I just couldn't pronounce the game and uh Yeah. Do it for us again. So, Teot Wakan.
1:20:43
Tewakan. Yeah. Okay. And it's like I had to learn it. Sounds like Timote.
1:20:49
Yeah. full body for home. No, it's something else. What tim the washing your hair in a in a
1:20:54
in a waterfall. There was a period of course completely different. Yes. So that's uh thingy. Cool. Me now,
1:21:02
isn't it? This is [ __ ] cuz I picked three that I really like. This is what I do every time. I mean, I'll leave because I did.
1:21:09
However, I went on record that I do really enjoy Tua and I'd happily play it
1:21:14
anytime. Um because it is great. Yeah, it's good. Great little dice knobbery
1:21:20
game. Yeah. It's the fact you roll them and you go, "No, that roll was crap." So you end up going, "I will take your dice then,
1:21:27
Becky, cuz you rolled great." And then you get money from it. Be like, "No, but I needed that five and that five was mine. It's no it's not anymore."
1:21:34
And just that whole you can't bank on what you've rolled. It's really interesting puzzle. I really like that game
1:21:39
and we should play it more. But I'm going to leave it because I did. So then
1:21:45
it leaves Lorenzo and Tean. One I've played a lot and one I haven't played enough.
1:21:50
So and I think I'm gonna sleeve
1:21:57
Tuon. Really? I didn't think you were going to go down there. Yeah. Uh it's t it's hard. Um because I
1:22:03
I really enjoy that game, but I don't play it. It's really weird. But when I do play on ghost, it's amazing. Why
1:22:09
don't I play this game? Um it's weird how many games you say that about. Yeah. It's just
1:22:15
too much too much games, not enough time. It's just one of them games where like I've let games go. As you guys know, I
1:22:22
cycle them in and out. I'm not precious about hoarding anymore. I will keep a nice number. Don't know what that number
1:22:29
is, but it's a number and uh and they will go and they'll come in. But that one has stayed. It's a bit like
1:22:35
Coinbra. I probably should let Coinbra go now. If I'm being honest, I've played it to death. Well, we've got a copy of it now.
1:22:42
There we go. It probably will go. And I love Coinbra for that same reason, but I just don't know. Just can't seem to to
1:22:48
do it. But Tayu Wakan is great. We played it last year and I really enjoyed
1:22:54
it. I just want to play more really. I should just sort that out. And the Lorenzo, I think actually the last game
1:22:59
I had of Lorenzo was a bit tainted. Um cuz I had the the Patsy Conspiracy cards
1:23:05
in and they don't think I'll ever play with them again cuz they just add dickory to a game a Euro game that
1:23:11
doesn't need any [ __ ] like that. Ruined your weekend. That is crazy. It's kind of just the whole thing just
1:23:17
soured. So I think because of that I will receive Lorenzo. Happy to have it
1:23:23
unless it's got the Paty cards in they can go die a slow horrible death. I
1:23:28
know. I got I got poo pooed for chucking away the mandatory quest cards in Lords
1:23:33
of Water Deep. Yeah, but that that's kind of part of the game though. No, it doesn't have to be that's based
1:23:39
horrible. You're right though. They're awful. They're awful, but it's kind of baked
1:23:44
into the fact that a runaway leader I suppose. But yeah, so I I would say let's let's
1:23:49
give Totacon the glory, the slevenness. Let's play with them dice going around
TURN 5 - Penultimate Turn: What's Coming Up
1:23:56
the board and Aztec nonsense. Love it. So yeah, I'll see you next year
1:24:03
because it's likely to be then. Cool. There we go. [Music]
1:24:14
Now we're on to our penultimate turn where we talk about all of the exciting things coming up, board game related or
1:24:20
not. Anything that's kind of tickling your fancy really, guys. So, Becky, have you got anything coming up? You've been
1:24:25
playing a lot of games or you got some more on the Yeah, uh I haven't. I need to get Earth into the roster cuz I have got the
1:24:31
sleeves now. I have got the sleeves and um they were the right ones. So, that was so don't worry everyone. I know
1:24:39
that's been you've been losing sleep on that. It's all good. That was the cliffhanger from last effort, wasn't it?
1:24:44
No, it's it's all good. Um but what I'm looking forward to is me and Curly booked a sort of last minute holiday.
1:24:50
So, we're going to use the previous episode that we did
1:24:56
to my advantage and go with some travel games. Yeah. What are you taking? So,
1:25:01
and it's early, but yeah. So, um definitely going to take
1:25:07
Oh, we thought about it earlier and I'd mentioned it and now I've forgotten it. We'll definitely take Jewel for Mid
1:25:12
Earth. Yeah, have to take that. Um definitely take Tact cuz I think Curly' like that if he gave it a proper
1:25:18
go. I now see more of this game and I'm like it looks cool. Yeah. Just neon neon colored cards
1:25:24
with 45 degree angles covering and doing things. You're just covering up someone else's pips. Oh, is that what you want?
1:25:29
Yeah. Hands off my bloody pips. Get your hands off my pips. Um yeah. So we definitely take that. Um
1:25:35
got a bit more luggage space so we could probably take a bit bigger game. I don't know. I don't know. But
1:25:41
yeah, we're only going for sort of nine days so it hasn't got to be loads. But just enough.
1:25:47
Yeah. I think I'm sure BGA will come out. We might play quite a bit of sort of flip seven maybe on BGA cuz I don't
1:25:52
actually own that. But you can play on BGA. So that's good. Yeah. Yeah. Don't need to then do play on your phone.
1:25:57
Yeah. Job done. Nice. Rob, well me and you have got a little work trip coming up, haven't we?
1:26:03
Tomorrow. Tomorrow we're off to Memphis, USA. Yeah. Um so uh looking forward to just kind of
1:26:10
chilling and playing some games in the evening to be honest. Captain's chair. Captain's chair. Um, oh, you know it,
1:26:16
baby. I've played it three times and I've played as Bicard every time. So, I'm quite looking forward to trying
1:26:22
out some different captains. I wouldn't try out any different captains. Picard would do. I mean, he's a solid captain.
1:26:28
He's a great captain. I'm sure he's a one out of 10 difficulty, which still means it's quite heavy
1:26:35
only because you can't play as Riker. No, you can have him as a duty officer.
1:26:40
Yeah, it's quite thematic because he goes gambling and basically he earns you latinum every every round. Um, so yeah,
1:26:47
but it sometimes just speeds your deck up as well. It's quite cool. Good old Riker. He's good though. He's got a nice pose
1:26:53
in the card as well. It's very Rkery. He's got a strong pose as Riker. Yeah. Do you like Riker?
1:26:59
Yeah. He's got a soft spot for Riker. Yeah, fair enough. Yes. I think it's because I think it's
1:27:04
because he reminds me of Curly a little bit. Yeah, I know. I can see that. Yeah, I can see that.
1:27:10
Yeah, there we go. Does Curly sit on chairs weird as well? Does he Does he kind of approach him from the side? No.
1:27:17
Cuz I Does he lead with the hip? Cuz I got to know Curly, you know. Well,
1:27:23
we were I was 17, he was 19 or or whatever. That kind of younger kind of um I think he Yeah, he was more
1:27:30
like Riker then than he would be now, which makes sense. And is is only right and proper, I think. But yeah, I think he reminded me of
1:27:36
Riker a little bit. Sorry, we had a bit of a ride down. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. I was
1:27:42
I was all right with it. That's why. So, yeah, loads of captain's chair. Loads of I'm bringing Kimfi Delve. I'm
1:27:48
bringing two boxes of Kim Five Delve cuz they're not big boxes. So, they're kind of ideal. I'm looking forward to playing that. But also, Neon Rain.
1:27:54
I'm really looking forward to playing that game. Yeah. Is I loved it when we played it. I thought it was fantastic. And I've snuck
1:28:01
in a little surprise game. He said this earlier. Now I'm intrigued. I forgot about it until this very moment. I snuck in a little surprise
1:28:07
game that I'm not going to bust out until until we get there. I'm not going to even tell you what it is. We're there until we get there. There
1:28:14
there until until Are you going to Are you going to bust it out on the plane? No. Is it a game you can play on the plane? That
1:28:20
rules some out. 20 questions. If there's a 2-hour delay, it might be played at the uh the airport if we had a
1:28:26
table. Oh, okay. So, um so yeah, I'll let you guys know what it is. Or we'll put some Zelda scrolls, isn't it?
1:28:33
I thought it was I'm bringing no clothes but for 10 days but I'm bringing elder scrolls.
1:28:39
I love that fact you take it out of the box and you lay all the neoprene out in the suitcase. Just all of the neoprene
1:28:45
out which you could do. I don't all the chips separately and yeah I think you'd be charged extra weight.
1:28:51
Yeah, you would for the suitcase. Crazy. Um but yeah, so looking forward to you
1:28:56
know we're going on an awesome trip. It is a work trip but we're going on an awesome trip. So, there's loads of new
1:29:02
sights and sounds and then chilling in the evening playing some games and it's it's going to be cool. So, yeah, that that's that's me.
1:29:08
Yeah, I I'll follow because it's pretty much the same same thing really. But yeah, looking forward to that. Looking
1:29:14
forward to that time. Um, what games are you putting in your suitcase other than Captain's Chair? At the minute, it's Captain's Chair and
1:29:19
Neon Rain, which is what Rob's mentioned. Uh, mainly because we we got um a copy at Expo, had a little game. Rob's
1:29:26
not had a proper proper game of it. It's just a quickfire arcade street fightery game, but with cards where you're
1:29:32
playing buttons and making combos up. It's It's simple, but still there's a
1:29:37
lot of little quirky stuff in there. I loved it. I thought it was fantastic. I'm annoyed that I didn't buy it, to be
1:29:43
honest. It's there. I know, but you can play it. Um, but generally, I'm
1:29:48
trying to think what's coming up in the old gaming calendar. More Apex Legends would be good. I'm looking forward to
1:29:54
doing that. We'll get you on Tambo at some point. Let's get some dates off you and we'll we'll make it happen, mate.
1:30:00
Um, and uh, yeah, God, I don't know. I can't think. Lots of cool stuff that's
1:30:05
coming up. But generally, we haven't got any conventions that are coming until October the 17th.
1:30:11
Is that the Is that the next one? It is. It's quite a little way, isn't it? That is. And is that the Devon?
1:30:17
Yeah. It is the next one. Yeah. Yeah. So, book it. Yeah. So, yeah. October the 17th, Fox and
1:30:23
Hounds. then there are still a very few tickets left. So if you are at all interested get
1:30:31
yourself on the internets and buy your ticket interwebs and do it. Yeah. So that and
1:30:36
then we've got Essen afterwards for some of us. So that'd be always interesting and
1:30:42
newness that be coming. So yeah, plenty of time to get excited for that bit. That's kind of me tea.
1:30:47
Um not much really. I've got if it goes ahead. Um, Frost Punk. Yeah. From And I'm hopped in because I
1:30:54
want to learn how to play it cuz I've got my own copy. You have? You got Chris? Yeah. And I'm going to take on holiday with me
1:31:00
being my pro to play, but I want to learn how to play it. Yeah. Yeah. If I don't learn it from Dan, I'm going
1:31:05
to have to be um I'm going to teach it. I need to explain. It's Dan's favorite. Unfortunately, I don't think we'll get a
1:31:11
game in every time we go on holiday. We're July, so it's the same time. It's basically a spanking simulator.
1:31:17
That's all it is. Yeah, I know. I played it twice, but it's been ages. I
1:31:23
need to remember how to play it. And I need to play a different role than the coal person cuz I've got I want to do the hunger person cuz I think that's the
1:31:28
most complicated track. Yes. You have to control the the when you're feeling hungry. That's what I really want to learn. Yeah.
1:31:34
To be fair, like if you're if you're learning Frost, you you know, you got to teach it. You've got to learn it all
1:31:40
because you got to tell everyone how to to play it really. Um I I would actually recommend you fire it up solo. Yeah.
1:31:47
And just run the game solo. It's doable and you get the um the app, the companion app for Frostb, which I'd
1:31:54
recommend you do. One, it gives you some thematic music for it, which is always nice. And two, it helps you with the flow of
1:32:00
the game. And it takes you through this is the step. This is this step. This is a day phase. This
1:32:05
I didn't realize that I must be on. It's an official one. So, it will help you
1:32:10
Oh, brilliant. Um kind of marshall the game as well. And uh I've played it solo a couple of
TURN 6 - The Final Turn
1:32:17
times and it's a lot like you have to really be invested in it cuz there's so much to it. Mhm. But it's it I mean the game is solo
1:32:23
anyway if you think about it cuz co-op. Um yeah, it's another game I need to
1:32:28
play more. But no, sounds good. That sounds good. Right, cool. I think we're there then, aren't we? Yep.
1:32:33
All right, board game draft is uh officially uh complete and the season is over. And uh yeah, all I'd like to say
1:32:41
is always a massive thank you to to our listeners for for yeah listening to our
1:32:46

1:32:53
we we really love our listeners and and if you want to support the show um there are a few things you can do. Obviously
1:32:58

1:33:06
coffee where you can come and support us and uh yeah keep the show going. You know none of this is free. It costs
1:33:12
money to do this and we love doing it and for the help of uh our current supporters that do help. This is the
1:33:18
reason why we're still here to be honest. So we massively thank uh everyone that supports us along the way.
1:33:25
Um but if you want to get in touch with us, we've got all our socials and all of that stuff's on our show notes. You can
1:33:31
get in touch through social media or directly on email or directly on our podcast platform bus as well. So yeah,
1:33:39
all that's left to say is whose turn is anyway.
1:33:54
