side. Well, let's crack straight onto our first section then. Let's talk about hex.

So, what has been on everybody's table recently? All those new expo kind of purchases or whatever. JP, go on. Take

Expo happened and I had a chance to talk about it properly but they were at Expo and they were demoing this game so it

kind of is like an expo kind of game. Why not? Yeah. So basically I'm talking about Apex Legends by Glass Cannon

massive? It's [ __ ] huge humongous box. It's It is so My box is really

long. Um but yeah, it's it's massive. You want to see someone about this? It's No, I don't. I'm really I'm really

impressed by it. Uh no, it's it's it's huge. This thing arrived and it's oh my god, this is massive. Um and I had a bit

of PTSD. I'm not going to lie, when I punched it out cuz then I realized I've got to sort this out. And I did it. I

got excited. And did you take everything out of the box? took everything out and it was like a Friday and it was late and

I started to punch and for what am I doing cuz I'm not going to get this done and and and you know when you kind of

get halfway through that and you have to just chuck it all back in the back. Yeah. I was like, "Oh, this is dirty and filthy." But it all went back in and

like and um and yeah, basically I got through it and it did take a good couple of hours of just solid sorting out which

I you know I don't mind. Sounds good. But the worst thing is you know that it's sitting in that box all messed up when it's there in the back of your mind

going oh and I couldn't get to it for two days and I was like oh this is just annoying painful. So I managed to sort it all out and get it all organized. So

once it's organized it's like it's good it's good now. And then we had a good couple of games. So I had a training game um with uh Rob and we kind of

played two-handed um two legends each and then we had a a proper um stint at

it the the other week as well. So before I get into it, if people don't know what Apex Legends is, it's based off an IP,

video game IP, battle royale shooter kind of game. Bit like I say a bit like

Fortnite. People probably crucify me if they're nothing like Fortnite. But you know, if

you're an outside thing, it's a shooty shooty bang bang game where people like to kill each other, but you're in kind

of squads of what? Two or three? Uh three. Three. And but each character is kind of um different. So each legend has

their own abilities and uh they they kind of work very differently. Um so yeah, they definitely a personality,

shall we say, and and you think how are they going to translate this fast-paced shooter into a turnbased board game? And

they've done it in such an incredible job in my opinion. It is just really,

really fun. So, kind of how it works is if you can imagine at the start of any kind of battle royale shooter where the

map's massive, there's loads of you, it kind of fast forwards through all of that bit and it takes you to the last

moments of of the the the death match where there's a ring that closes down and shrinks the play area into a smaller

area and the game the board game kind of enters you in that moment where you're kind of entering the the final stand.

But before you do that, you kind of um draft your legends of which I can't remember how many I've got. Quite a few.

Um and you can kind of go, "Oh, I want that one." And if you know the game, you're like, you've probably got your favorite. So Dave already knew most of

the the the roster in there cuz you probably played them all over time. Yeah, I've played them all. Yeah. He's like, "Where's where's this one? Where's

that one? Oh, it's" And I was like, "No, we're playing we're playing the uh the boring intro." And I had to kind of stop him from picking what he wanted, which

he was he wasn't happy about, but tough. Um, so you you kind of draft your legends and then you do a kind of load

out phase and that's quite fun actually the load out phase because you draw a load of weapons, draw a load of loot

from loot bags and then you and your partner cuz it's a team game. You you sit and go, "Right, how do we work this

out between us now? I'll have that, you'll have that. That's really good for me." Now, if you have this and you're kind of just puzzling it out between

you, it's like a little mini game before the main game. So once you got set and you're like, "Right, ready, cool." You

then decide who's going to enter the map from what side of the the the main map

and you take it in turns. You get bonuses for for picking certain sides and then let hell commence basically

after that. So, and it's got a really nice um verticality to the game because

it comes with 3D buildings and 3D terrain. So, it really has a table presence. This thing you look at and go,

"Wow, like this thing is popping." Um the disadvantage of that is you have to stand up every now and then to actually

have a look around corners. But but you know with those kind of games you you're you're probably on your feet a lot

anyway so it's all good. One person stands and then the whole table starts standing anyway.

Um and it's all arranged on a grid system. So it's not like measuring tapes or anything like that. It's all on

grids. And there's rules around you kind of moving around how you move up buildings, how you can drop down and all

of that jazz. and and you have the typical line of sight uh stuff. So once you get your head around the line of

sight rules, they're not too bad, but I think when you're not used to that kind of game, there's definitely a bit of

right, how does how does this work? I'm on top of this building and what's hidden and what's not hidden. But you

figure that out is golden and then suddenly you're kind of in the the game. The bit I really enjoy is well many bits

I really enjoy is the um the abilities on the legends. So they all come with a a tactical and a ultimate ultimate.

Thank you Dave. An ultimate ability where you'll use them. So if you're uh Bangalore, as an example, she's got uh

smoke screens that she'll just drop and they come with really nice uh kind of cross-section I call them minis, but

they're just cross-section train pieces, aren't they? Kind of thing. Pieces that really just pop out on the board um as

as one of her abilities. Another one is Rolling Thunder. Rolling Thunder. So she can literally call in an air strike.

Nice. And literally bombard the crap out of the uh the arena. And I've got cuz I

got the the legendary edition. I've got all the diaramas of all the characters.

It's completely unnecessary. Don't even need it. So if you're thinking, do I need them? You don't need them. Are they

cool? Absolutely cool. I thought it was going to be used in the game. I was like, what's this diioama piece? This looks cool. Oh, no. It just sits to the

side with all your pieces. It holds your stuff. It kind of the dioras look like an active scene in the game. So your

legend sits in there, its abilities and all sitting there. So if you look at it, it just looks like they're, you know,

being fired upon or whatever. And it is really cool, but they serve no function other than to look cool and hold the

stuff. But I'm I'm there for it. Um, so yeah. So really cool how they got

different abilities. So every character feels different. And now having played it a bit more, I'm like, I really want

to just explore some of the others in there cuz they look crazy. Um, so that's kind of one aspect I really enjoy. But

the the actual main thing is the the the shooting mechanic, how you actually shoot people and how that whole thing

works. Cuz you'd expect, oh, it's dice chucking, isn't it? No, no dice in this game whatsoever. And you have an aim

board that sits off to the side and an aim deck. And it works really simply and

it's really clever is when you're about to fire, you'll shuffle that thing. your

enemy gets a chance to react and they can play feat cards from their hand to react and say, "Haha, I'm going to move

or I'm going to do something." Um, but if you manage to get the shot fired, then depending on your weapon, it'll

tell you how many cards you're going to draw. Um, so it could be like you've got a pistol, so it's literally,

you know, not that many shots, or you got an assault rifle where you're going to have a lot of cards in a row, or you got a shotgun where you got lots of

cards, but condensed into uh many fewer columns. and you're flipping these cards

over and they've all got numbers on there and you're trying to hit um basically uh over a target value that

your weapon will say. Your weapon will say you need to hit over 50 and then different things to modify that depending what's going on. And uh yeah,

you're just flipping them over and you go hit hit. Oh, this one's got a head shot. Nice. If you hit with a headshot, bang, extra damage. But again, on that

deck, you've got half targets, which means if you get two half targets, doesn't matter what the number is, that's a hit. And you've got things like

actually if the opponent's in cover and you've got you draw a certain card that says you miss if they're in cover or

sometimes you'll get a hit automatically if you're elevated misses if you're firing upwards and things like that. And

it just works really quickly. You do it and you go damn or yes and and reset and

off you go cuz the value actually on the track you have positive numbers and then negative numbers. That's right. And if

your gun's more stable, that means you start the deck higher up. So you're adding numbers, so you're more likely to

hit. But then if you start getting debuffs or you get more recoil in the gun, you actually go into the negative

numbers, which means you're less likely to hit. So it's a really intriguing way they've done it. It kind of makes sense though, like how that works with the

weapon that you're using. Go. That makes sense. Um, and yeah, and you're just firing shooty bang bang. And basically

the win condition is you you need to get a kill on each legend. So if let's say me and Dave on one team, Tambo and Becky

on the other, I'd need to kill Tambo once. I need to kill you once, Becky. And then that team wins. Simple. We kick

their asses, Tambo. Simple. And uh and it's just it's frantic. It's it's in

your face. And the ring closes even further in the game to the point where you are literally got no choice. that

you are just face to face firing and just just nowhere to hide at the end of it. And I quite like that cuz you can

skip out of the ring. You're going to get punished for it cuz you lose damage, but you can literally just Yeah, it's

just it's just action and you can't help but just be involved. And I'm having a blast with it and I can't wait. We've

limp along. That's pretty cool. That's the beauty of it. I think I we our first game that we had slow to start people

hadn't played before. lots of questions when you know it. this. You could be knocking games out in 90 minutes like

which you know the setup is 20 to 30 minutes which actually is not bad when you look at you think oh my god this is

take forever but when you know it you can literally get games in off you go and uh and I think that's where the

game's going to shine if you're sitting there with AP like most games and you're waiting go come on just move your

character like two spaces and shoot something I think if you don't just like the video game right you're thinking

But you're not sitting there going, I'm going to analyze while I could go up there and I could do you'd be dead, wouldn't you? Before you even think,

you'd be dead. So, you've got to do more reaction and stuff. And I think if you play in that mantra where react more

than overthink this, then the game's going to be really snappy and fluid. So, yeah. Yeah. It's nice and fast-paced,

isn't it? Yeah. So, it it does that really well and it's action-packed. You've got two goals. You've got one

goal and that's to kill two people. So, from the off you'd assume be each other. They've kind of condensed that skirmish

game into a, you know, an hour and a half game, which is really nice. But there's loads of different modes.

There's capture the flag, there's there's boss mode, there's there's loads of different ways of playing it that I've never even touched or looked at

yet. Some of those might be a bit longer, right? Probably. Yeah, who knows? Oh, there's a fun fact about

battle royals, though. All the concept came from an old movie, old Korean movie where Battle Royale

in it. That's what PUBG was like made that game and that's what that ring enclosing ring was all based off of.

Yeah. And then you did Apex Legends, Fortnite. All of them started cloning up and started to get a slice of the

action. Yeah. Now there's more battle royale than there are dogs. I don't know why dogs, but yeah, fine. Woof. I went

through a phase of watching a load of uh Korean and Japanese movies with a friend many years ago. Um was a crazy one about

spirals. How could you make a film about people going mad about spirals? But you can. Yes, you can. You can. And it's

great. Yeah. Don't know. Triangles are scarier, I think. Well, you haven't seen who's me. If you see that, you you won't

look at a spiral the same spiral out. I think he ended up digging out his ear cuz he knew he had a spiral in. Yeah.

It's all a bit. Yeah. Watch with caution, listeners. Watch with caution. But that doesn't happen when playing Apex. So, it's fine. But I I I'd

recommend it. I think even if skirmish games aren't your jam, which they're not mine, but that sounds rapid enough that

would keep my attention, I think. But just try it because you might surprise you. Like I'm surprised I own it cuz I I

played a prototype two years ago and I I I'll be honest, I wasn't really that

interested. I was helping Paul Grogan out and said, "Would you mind coming playing this?" Went. Yeah, sure. Go for it. I'll play anything anyway. And I

remember driving over there going, I'm not really that bothered about this. and then sat down and played it. I've just

had a blast. This is amazing. That's such a nice sort of surprise when that happened, isn't it? When you've been

sitting thinking, "Oh, that's exactly how I felt about Lords of Water Deep." As I know I've mentioned before, you think, "Oh, this game's going to be rubbish."

And then you just think, "Oh, this is brilliant." And it exceeds expectations. It's so nice, isn't it? Love it when that happens. So, yeah, that's me. Cool.
Tambo - Decorum

Tambo, tell us about your game. Okay, so I wasn't an expert game. I I recently went over to my sisters and we they

bought a game called Decorum by Flood Floodgate Games. Um, basically it's a

game of they describe it as a game of passive aggressive cohabitation.

Okay. So, you're bally literally a family trying to decorate a house, but you all have your own ideas on how this

house is decorated. Okay. I think people are living that actually married.

It's a married couple. Should we do his eggshell white or should we do magnolia? Yes. So, um, so yeah, basically as a

family, you are there to decorate the house, but you all have your own objective cards with your three objectives, which say it's got the

bathroom's got to be red, and you got you got the choice of I mean, um, antique, modern, and there's four

options you can have like on the board next to it. Okay. Like style, like classic. Yeah. Yeah. Um, and you you've

got to have like your bedroom a certain color and you might have the bathroom has to have um a yellow modern

or something like that. And you've got to have it in and then you all got to meet your requirements to fulfill it within I think it's like 15 days or

something per day. Um it's really good fun. You can't it's all about communication. You can't say much at

all. So it's not about communication but it is but you're not allowed to talkirectly very limited. You can only

have to say so swarm does an action. You do one action. You can ether change the color of the of the the room you want by

chopping around or you can take an item off. But if you take an item off, you can put an item back on, but it's got to be the same item. So if you just want to

take an item off and do a different item, you can't put that other item back on. Um, so and then you do that and then you go around the table once you've done

anything and they go, "So what do you think?" And you go, "I don't like that." Cuz it's it doesn't help you. Oh, I see.

Okay. And or or you just say, "No, that that's horrible. That's awful. That's disgusting. I don't

like it." And that makes just to make sure it's really bad. You're not going to make my objectives if you do that. Yeah. Um, but no, it's it's good fun. Um

there's loads of different um scenarios. So you got I don't know how they figured that out cuz it all must work. So they

have one scenarios and if you put all together you think how how can they make

this work? How how can they have all different ones but and you can all meet your objectives. So is it a sort of co-op then? Are you trying everyone? Oh

when you get to the last day, you got one more chance to have a meeting and then there's one more time and if you don't do it by then, you fail basically.

But there's loads of different scenarios. Does the house get repossessed at the end or something? Burn down. Yeah. Must just basically the

levels of objectives. So, you can have two star hardness and then you got real hard ones. Well, yeah. So, yeah, it's good fun. Nice. I can't think of a game

but I haven't really played a game since the expo. I've kind of had a bit of a uh a purge of games. But um you just been

relaxing. It's been a lot, hasn't it? Yeah, it has been a lot. But we I'm going to talk about Galaxy Trucker. So, it's an older game. They do have a new

expansion coming out soon um which is about is it the VIP one or is that the

it's got VIPs in it? It's called Do What? But it has VIP uh people that come onto the ship and like and it's also got

like super mad um disasters that that can happen. Not like the game's hazardous enough. So, Galaxy Truckers,

if you've not heard what it's about, so you you are truckers in space, and at

the start, you've got to build your ship, but it's not like, "Oh, I'll build my ship at a leisurely pace." No, you're

timed. And there's tiles in the middle. They're all face down. You've got a grid, which is your ship, which can

change depending on what level you're doing. I think there's like three or four uh levels that you can do, but um

yep, you'll everyone puts their hand in, countdown, do a timer. You'll grab a

piece, one piece, put it over your ship, then flip it, have a look at the piece, decide if you want to build it or not.

There's lots of different pieces. There's like connectors which are just um literally a tile of different types

of connectors because on each piece of your engine there is either like a one pipe connector or two pipe connector.

Your piece has to connect in the right way when you put the piece down. You're

allowed to store two, but if you don't use them at the end, they're minus money. And this is all about making money. Person with the most money at the

end wins. You've got other pieces which is like cargo holds, guns, shields,

um there is aliens which give you little buffs. There's engines and you build a

ship. While you're doing this, you can also look at the card which are your goals that might happen as you go out

into space cuz there's ones where you have a race where it's the person with the most engines has to like zoom off.

um which there's always also batteries and some of the better engines require you to spend batteries to do them.

Person at the end of the track uh who goes first gets most money at the end and also gets to do objectives as these

objectives flip. So after you've built your ship, the first person to build their ship puts their piece down and

they're going to go first. flip the objectives. When an you might have one which is like

cargo where the first player gets to choose whether they want to take this cargo but usually it means going backwards on the grid which means they

might change their position which means the next card that comes out they won't be going first. Some of them might be just meteors falling from the sky

blowing up your ship. And this is where the stuff kind of gets interesting. Pieces of your ship might get hit. If

that's a connector, that whole piece of your [ __ ] just disappears and each one of those tiles that's broken off is a

minus money at the at the end of the first run. So, and it's kind of chaos.

It's absolute chaos when you're playing. It's good fun. My brother loved it and bought it in the end. Um he had so much

fun playing it even though he did the worst out of all of us because right right at the start of the very last

round I think um he had like a targeted meteor that hit the middle of his ship so he had to wipe out one half of his

ship from the start. So it was pretty doomed for him but it is kind you you just accept it. It's just funny, right?

He had two I think he had two squares on his ship left. He had this main um like cabin and like a and yeah and an

offshoot and everything else had fallen off and it was just floating it was just floating around space

and it did look good fun when you guys were playing it like that kind of the the grabbing tiles at the start. It was

just like this frenzy of of like a piranha frenzy. Yeah. And a lot of shouting go I don't need this piece but

I want this piece but I can't hold this piece cuz I've already got two pieces that you put it back. when you put it back has to be face up. Yeah. So if

someone else spots it, oh, I need that. Well, that's gone. I can't build that

because you Yeah. building the ships like it is half the fun of the game, right? And then seeing how well you do

as you go out into space and seeing if you What's fun is when because you do a

little check after you've built, you do a little uh is this legal? Oh, okay. What were you looking for? It's frantic,

right? Mistakes are going to get made and you check all the connectors of the other player and you go, "That's not

right." And you're like, and then you got it's got to go. You wipe off the map. And and that could be a fatal

start. Like that's what happened to Rob right at the start of the very first game, wasn't it? It was like half your ship's gone. They still count as

negative as well then at that point. Yeah. No. Blind. It's punishing, isn't it? But you can you can build it back

through money from doing stuff like it happens to everyone as well. So you don't you kind of don't you don't mind.

You don't really don't mind. You know, it's going to be chaos. It's all about the fun of the game. It's not about who wins in that game. It's about kind of

just how much fun you have while playing it. It's like a good party game. It is really It does sound really good. I'd

really like to play that. It's just nonsense and and silly, but you're just laughing even when your your stuff's

falling apart or some crap's happened to you because you know it's going to happen to someone else in a minute. Why did Ky not like it then? Probably cuz

it's too random. Yeah, maybe there is a lot. Yeah, there's not a lot of sort of decision making and choices as well. I

looking at the cards as Davey said. Um I didn't do this often as I should have done, but if you if you're looking at

the cards going, "Right, yeah, that's got this. I'm going to build my ship in this particular way cuz I think it'll maximize what money I'm going to get."

There's all of that you can do. Um, but but obviously if you're looking at cards, you're not getting pieces and

everyone else is like snafling and I've got a good booster and you're like, "Oh god, I'm left with the drags or I've got

a gun that points the wrong way and I can't can't get it to orient." You're saying this very casually like, "Oh, you look at this." And you can build this
