Now for something completely different...Davey invites everyone into his mind as he devises an Escape Room for the gang to try and escape from.  Who knew Taunton board game shops could be so dangerous.

FIRST PLAYER: Davey
OTHER PLAYERS: JP, Becky & Dan

In this episode you'll learn:
- how Dan has been launching off with his first experiences of Galactic Cruise by Kinson Key Games
- about the latest hotness from 2011 with Ora et Labora from Lookout Games
- how Davey can't get enough of battling boss monsters in Primal: The Awakening
- that Becky is better at enticing people to her French parties than her collecting flowers in both Fleur & Botany by Dux Somnium Games
- whether the Whose Turn gang will make it out of Davey's mind in our first recorded escape room experience.

welcome welcome this is Whose Turn is It Anyway and now in the great words of
0:43
Montipython and now for something completely different so this episode's going to be completely out there i'm
0:49
sorry if you don't enjoy it but we are literally getting into an escape room so if that's not your cup of tea then I
0:54
would probably skip this episode but I'm here with JP hello Dan i'm trapped in a
1:00
glass case of emotion help i'm stuck in a nut
1:05
i'm stuck in many nuts in my time that's from hours there we go and Becky hi
1:12
everyone there we go becky's got a little bit of a sore throat it doesn't hurt it just
1:18
sounds quite um different so sorry everybody yeah yeah she's going to sing some blues
1:24
for us later also known as a sexy voice i don't think there's anything sexy about this i beg to differ
1:34
right then let's get into
TURN 2 - Let's Talk About Hex
1:45
it now we're going to do Let's Talk About Hex where we talk about our recent games we've been playing so why don't we
1:52
start with Becky what have you been playing lately so uh friend of the podcast Stu came over to uh my house and
Becky - Botany & Fleur
1:59
we played a double double title we played bot and then we played Laflur oh
2:05
Laflur so yeah we had a kind of a floral evening and it turns out I am much
2:10
better at throwing French parties for posh people than I am at collecting flowers i have a question yeah is bot
2:18
quite light yes it is yeah that's the the turn off my turn off as well cuz I love stand out yeah you're basically
2:25
going around aboard going to different areas of the world it's basically an oldfashioned map um your kind of house
2:32
your estate is in the UK and you can kind of travel so many
2:37
uh different pieces a bit like like a like a risk or a ticket to ride that kind of thing you can get him from one
2:42
part of the map to the other cuz you have you have cards in your hand that are from certain parts of the world like
2:48
Madagascar or China or whatever you have to get to that country and then you can
2:54
obtain the card and you can put it in your Wian case and you can have I want
3:00
to say three you can put it in your wardian case or you can put it in your press and if you collect poison flowers
3:08
if you put them in your press it doesn't kind of give you bad points but you can take them back home and put them in your
3:13
neighbor's like estate and kind of sabotage sabotage there we didn't do any sabotage but there is other cards I
3:20
think perhaps with the expansion i don't know we did play with a couple of expansions that you can end up getting
3:25
points from your poisonous flowers where normally it' be a minus but it was really good and it's a very beautiful game but it is very light yeah but it
3:32
was nice and there is a bit of a kind of all pushy luck do I just go one more oh shall I do it because you get these kind
3:38
of events every turn which might be good or might be really awful and if you don't get home in time you lose a lot of
3:45
money so it it does it is quite punishing if you don't manage to pull it off but it's really it's really good fun
3:52
and then Laflur is made by the same people and it looks kind of similar it's
3:57
very decadent and sort of racooco kind of stylings um basically you're trying
4:04
to make the most attractive garden so you have things like um I don't know
4:10
certain things like fountain or whatever in your garden you've got certain flowers in your hand and you're trying
4:16
to lure not lure that sounds really dodgy you're trying to attract certain people to come to your lovely garden
4:24
with Yeah you're basically saying "Come to my party it's a really good party there's nice things to look at." So if
4:30
your part is better than other people's parties they'll come to you and then you can kind of get some of them to fall in
4:36
love with you and then you automatically get certain things each turn it It's fun yeah it was good it was cool sounds
4:42
different i did I did enjoy it yeah did I buy it no so that I guess normally
4:48
I would auto buy things but I'm trying to be a bit better with that i can't imagine Curly would ever want to play it
4:54
cuz it's just a not his kind of cup of tea and I think it isn't um puzzle not
5:00
puzzly because he doesn't like puzzles but it isn't sort of strategic enough but it is it is still like a balancing
5:06
thing do I do I go down this road do I go down that road do I pick these do I pick those but yeah it would never get
5:11
to the table but I absolutely 100% would play again yeah that's just Stuart just
5:16
put another event up and have it definitely would play and we played with a couple of I don't know if we played with the expansions of Laflur but we
5:23
definitely played with the expansions of Bot yeah okay it was good it was good yeah i love the artwork and I love the
5:29
theme i think I basically I want that game but with a little bit more depth and to make
5:37
potions out of or make stuff out of the the flowers of stuff yeah yeah yeah fair enough i just I quite like the the
5:44
artwork seems very um is it like Victorian era with the
5:50
Yeah kind of Yeah edwwardian kind of flower kind of botanical stuff it's like what you find in a um when you went to
5:57
science at school and you go into a textbook and you and you got all of like the Latin names for all of the the flowers and it's like that it is it is a
6:04
very beautifully made beautifully presented really high production value expensive looking game yeah yeah nice
Dan - Galactic Cruise
6:12
how about yourself Dan what have you been playing well you mentioned Stuart friend of the pod he came around to mine
6:18
uh he's been a busy be isn't he busy being Stuart uh he came around to mine
6:23
and we played Galactic Cruise uh and uh I've played it again since then so I
6:30
played a couple times it is the new the new Hatness from Drander and Kinsson Key games their first game um it's basically
6:38
sending rockets into space but the people that are on them are people that are going up for a good time so they're
6:43
going up for leisure purposes tourists tourists yeah so you're you're you're building rockets katy Perry uh no that
6:50
one didn't happen did it topical that one didn't happen um so so yeah you're building rockets uh and you're sending
6:56
them up into space and you're trying to get your tourists to have a wonderful time while they're there um you're
7:03
giving yourself upgrades and you're trying to upgrade your ship and trying to get your ship as big as you can to try and get more people in them or
7:08
you're marketing to these people um and it's just worker placement goodness it's not it's not on a lera level it's
7:16
probably one below a lassera I think but you've got Ian Tol i love his artwork
7:21
and and it shines through in Galactic Cruise massive fan even in his early days when he did some of the sort of the
7:26
early stuff um but um yeah Galactic Cruz is is it's a decent chunky weight it
7:31
makes you think it there's a bit of a brain itch there but not too much there's a lot of customiz customization
7:37
options on that board like all the actions can change spaces in every game that you play so any kind of when you
7:43
play the the intro game which I played first kind of a lot of the u actions kind of um pair up quite nicely and it's
7:50
quite nice but as soon as you turn that board over and you play the standard game none of that marries up which means
7:56
that every single game that you play is different because all the actions are different all the technologies are different and the blueprints that you
8:02
get which are basically the rooms that go in your uh in your rockets they they are changing every game cuz you're
8:07
shuffling them up so every part of the game is different which I really really like um the pieces are gorgeous if
8:13
you've got the Kickstarter edition I missed out on the Kickstarter but um a retailer was selling a Kickstarter version so I I picked it up uh and it's
8:20
just really nice like you know it's dual layer boards and the wooden pieces are chunky i am a bit of a sucker for a nice
8:27
quality game uh and that one is definitely it aren't we all Dan aren't we all we love it um but yeah I'm
8:35
Galactic Cruise big fan got it to the table in a few weeks cuz you're playing as well GP yeah muscle my way in cuz
8:41
I've only played it along with Dave Essen wasn't even last year it was the year before I think yeah will gave us
8:47
the teach right yeah will the board game wizard who works for Dr now as a marketing PR guy and he did one of the
8:54
best teaches I think I've ever had it was so talking about that yeah it's great nice lifted our spirits as well as
9:00
the ship as well as the ship but we played until the first liftoff um and at that time the board was black and white
9:06
yeah yeah it was like it looked like a a schematic yeah it's now it's now a beautiful sea of color if you're playing
9:12
with four people so I'm keen to just try do a full game cuz everyone's raved about it um doesn't take too long either
9:19
no it's a couple hours and it's done but it there's a there's a lot going on in there and there's a lot of decision- making which I like i enjoyed my play
9:25
yeah it's really good i've just looked it up what would you say the weight was what um Glad Cruz Cruz 3 um 3.2.5 3.2
9:33
3.25 it's actually 3.9 oh you got jeez that is on a lit bit tricky a bit under
9:41
a bit under yeah I tend the four up but a bit um depending on what you play but
9:47
it's just a beautiful box the box is lovely but yeah and the rule book the rule book is amazing it's so well
9:54
written and it's not often that I can read a rule book in one sitting and go got that takes normally two or three for
10:00
me but that one fantastic loved it great piece of work great game can't wait to play it again and chances are it won't
10:06
be belonging until I play it again after that and again and again it definitely felt more open than a Larda like Yes it
10:13
wasn't as punishing so if you if you fell off that wheel at some point there was a way to get back on oh absolutely if someone takes an action space there
10:20
that you you you they're not blocked uh you can bump them off you'll give them a buff you'll give them a what's called a
10:26
funding bonus um but you're never truly stuck uh but there's I with games like
10:32
Voidfall where you've got like eight or nine cards in your hands each with three actions on them i look at that and I just go I love this game but where do I
10:40
start i have no there's just so much going on but at least with with something like Galactic Cruise you kind
10:46
of with the options that you've got in front of you you can see multiple paths but it's not too overbearing you've kind of got a set goal of what you want to be
10:53
doing as well don't you so yeah you know what you want to achieve and yeah really like it cracking game nice yeah I look
10:58
forward to playing that at some point all the spaces keep rapidly disappearing i'll put another one up so yeah that'll
JP - Ora et Labora
11:05
be good and how about you JP i was going to say finally but I've got me i've got
11:10
me myself i I'll let you go first you are thanks mate no worries i played a load of things but I think the one that
11:16
I just sticks out for right now is Oral Labor because Hu Rosenberg classic game
11:24
from god knows when um 2009 9 10 something like it's around
11:30
that time and uh it doesn't kind of play like any of his others that you would
11:36
expect to it's his kind of own unique design space and so kind of how it works it's basically uh pray and work in Latin
11:45
that's and your what else is there to life it's it's basically you're playing as monks and um you're building out your
11:51
your your kind of buildings in this area and it has some cava gricular elements
11:57
to it especially with the expansions to a griculara where you're you're cutting pee bogs and uh cutting trees down which
12:04
is very similar is that what aura means cuz I'm guessing labbora means like labor like work so aura means prey I
12:12
believe oh my god I didn't know that latin expert that has just washed over my brain i'm not clever i just picked it
12:19
up from someone else that said the same thing cuz I don't know Latin but yeah Labbor is a farmer isn't it
12:27
loves a land labbora sounds like labor and I just together makes sense so there we go so yeah basically you're you're
12:33
you're getting buildings you're building them on your like little territory and you've got like a kind of an adjacency
12:40
puzzle that you're trying to figure out so the rub of the game is that everything works around this central
12:46
resource wheel all right this is the the cool bit it's the my favorite bit of the game so if you and it manages like a
12:53
communial resource pool so every turn this wheel moves up one all the
12:58
resources in the game of which there are many there's so many resources in this game not even ones on the wheel but ones
13:04
you can make from the wheel so things like sheep uh wood uh general money cash
13:10
uh Pete uh stone you know wine whatever or grapes rather not wine um you can
13:16
make wine as well but that's not on the wheel right yeah but you you it's a kind of secondary yeah um so every turn
13:23
basically this wheel moves up one space now that means everything is increased in in volume so whenever you kind of
13:30
cash in resource if you cut trees down you'll cash in wherever the the marker is on the wheel it could be at 2 3 5 8
13:37
but all the way back to zero on the wheel and you get that many raw resources and usually marks with um
13:44
swearing afterwards cuz you go I'm going to cut wood down cuz it's on a six and then someone else
13:49
goes because they're about to take the wood and now cutting trees down when it's going to be like one or two is
13:56
bloody pointless so you have to kind of then re repivot so that whole central
14:01
kind of mechanism is really clever and in how it works but there is a joker uh resource on there which you can use for
14:08
anything else but again that usually boogers off quickly and people spend that um it's really nice interaction
14:14
isn't it for something that's a euro um that it's not negative inter interaction
14:20
in the sense that someone's taking something from you it's they're using something on the board and you then have
14:25
to pivot which is really nice yeah yeah it It does it in a really interesting unique way underrated game it's
14:32
underrated it I haven't played it for about 12 years not It's been over over a decade it is great it's cool and you get
14:39
to a point in the the turn structure cuz depends on what mode you play and how many players like typically in a normal
14:46
game is that whoever's first player gets the first and last turn of the of the round and then obviously cycles around
14:53
as as we go but you'll get to a point in the wheel the wheel say when you get to this stage you'll get to a settlement
14:59
phase and then the settlement phase is basically you have these hander cards that you start with and some more cards
15:04
that get unlocked as you go around the wheel and you will put in like uh you know a shanty town or or some market
15:11
town or whatever it is settlement onto your board and that's going to score certain values of cards that are above
15:16
it below it left and right of it so where you're placing stuff massively important like and usually on your first
15:23
game you learn by going a crap I've done this put it there yeah because once you placed it you built the thing and some
15:29
buildings don't like to be next to other buildings so you know there'll be certain things that will give a negative
15:34
to a settlement if it's next to it so if you got a Pete bog thing which is
15:40
obviously smelly and you know whatever no one wants to live next to that so it's going to give a negative to to the
15:45
adjacent settlement on there so you want to kind of position your buildings in certain places and then you've got u
15:52
monastery buildings which are like a gold banner which can only go next to other monastery build so you kind of
15:57
like got to fit this thing in but you can buy expansion boards for your territory so you can make it bigger
16:03
which then gives you more wood to cut down all that kind of stuff but it's the weird thing of the game i've played it I
16:09
don't know three four times and there is I think there is a shelf life in this game because nothing changes so the the
16:18
decks that you have you can pick either um uh France or Ireland and they're like
16:23
double-sided cards and if you pick one you'll get like uh grapes and you can make wine and if you pick the other
16:29
you'll get um beer and and flour and bread and things like So there's certain resources off the cards uh for for the
16:36
the kind of province that you pick but the the the buildings that come out every phase are the same so every A
16:44
phase B phase they're the same so the difference in the game is where those
16:49
buildings get built who built them and the clever bit is that actually even
16:54
though let's say Becky you you you take a building i'm like I wanted that i can still use it because I can pay you a
17:01
coin to use your um one of your workers to activate that building for me which
17:06
is another interesting interaction which is like please don't use that special worker cuz you've got one I forget what
17:12
they call it but one of your workers is special that if you buy a building you
17:17
can activate it directly from purchasing which you can't normally do so yeah you're like you got to leave yourself in
17:23
a position where hopefully that's not the only one you've used because someone will go "Ha I'm gonna use it for you and you're like so it's got a nice thing
17:30
where you care about what other people are doing." Um which is why I'd also keep the player count on that game low
17:36
because if you're playing four I can't see across the table let alone what buildings you've got what you can do but
17:41
we play three and it worked quite well cuz we kind of huddled together on the end of a table and we could all see um
17:47
each other's boards and work out but it was a really tight game wasn't it it was it could have gone either way and it's
17:52
just I don't know i just find it a joy to play it's very uve puzzly kind of vibe and uh but very different it's not
17:59
what you would expect i had a lot of visual points and you had a lot of points in front of you on your board so
18:05
yeah JP and Tambo thought I had won and then JP was like snook it see you later
18:11
yeah there you go it's a classic it's really good i' I'd play it anytime i I thought I might get bored of it but I
18:17
haven't yet so Cvern is more linear than that I think Civera being the one that is
18:23
probably the most popular one of the most popular games is the most linear it
18:29
is nothing not very much changes it's just those action cards or those action spaces that come out and they might come
18:35
out in a in a random order based on the round number that you're on that's it all the buildings are the same
18:41
all the resources are the same everything's the same um and although I don't have a Gria
18:47
anymore a Gria is better than Cavverna because of the m the sheer amount of difference that you can have in a Yeah
18:53
it is than Cavverna i like Civera a lot and I've kept Cavverna but I didn't keep a Gricola but I'm always tempted always
19:00
back of my mind going I really should buy the latest edition of a Gricola like the one you've got uh and the lovely the
19:06
lovely big box and just get it all again because I'd love me and the wife played a lot of a Gricola in the early little
19:12
dwarf pictures though hasn't it it doesn't no it doesn't but it is it's still It's got really sad people going "I'm hungry."
19:18
It does have that burner as well on the on the on the on the tiles you can make dwarfs force them to to eat coal i just
19:25
There's something really I really like that horrible person it's quite sadistic really isn't it
19:32
you like it lav need to play it oh I've not got that anymore and it was good it
19:38
was good i just didn't couldn't get it to the table anymore so I sold it years ago i think I wish I had that now cuz I can play with you guys and you you'd
19:43
love it this is why you don't sell your games silly me you ru the day yeah and and
19:50
Laav are two that of ways that I'd like to get back in my collection there we go but or if you haven't checked it out
19:57
it's the latest hotness 2011 whatever so yeah how about you Dave
Davey - Primal streaming on Gaming Rules!
20:03
uh so I've been playing Primal the Awakening on live stream with Paul Groen so uh gaming rules i'm sure you guys
20:11
know Paul um yeah I've been really enjoying it i've been wielding the hammer i didn't know
20:19
how I'd find the hammer because a lot of people didn't like the deck but the first deck you start with so
20:26
I'll explain the primal first let's go from there if you've not heard of Primal Awakenings it's is a boss battler
20:32
you have a deck of cards which is linked to what weapon you're using um this deck
20:38
of cards you draw five and you have to it's got the common mechanic which a lot of people use now which I really like
20:44
you spend a card to have to then pay for another card you can only play five into your sequence where it's quite unique is
20:51
colored cards mean different things as well as having text on the card a red card means you're attacking which will
20:57
deal your weapon damage um as well as might have text on the card that will do a different thing blue cards deal with
21:04
um stress which is uh kind of a counter on the monster that means they will attack you and do damage to everyone or
21:11
do different things depending on what monster it is um and then those those are your offensive cards you've got your
21:17
defensive cards which are green and yellow um yellow is kind of putting your
21:22
shield up or or defending um I think I can't remember what the actual name for
21:27
it is um and then the green cards are dodging okay and you have to play those into your sequence they have other
21:33
effects as well usually they'll like buff other cards and do lots of different varied things but you play
21:40
them into sequence because at the end the monster will try and attack you you'll flip a card it'll have a number on it if you've played equal to or more
21:48
than that number you've blocked the block the attack so that's the simple sequence actions right where the
21:56
interesting part comes in is the monster is always reactive it's got like a behavior deck and on the back of the
22:02
card depending on what you're doing sometimes the monster will react to that so if I play if it's I've got a card out
22:08
and you can always see what the behavior deck is but if you if I've if it's got a red card out and I play an attack red
22:14
down once I've finished resolving that card we flip that behavior card and lots
22:19
of different things can happen it can make you try and discard cards to try and not take damage it can turn and set
22:26
the whole thing the whole place on fire which means you just don't have any actions it's It's a real interesting way
22:33
of dealing with a boss battler because you actually have to interact and think about what you're doing to then b uh
22:40
basically mitigate what might be happening to you so it's got like 16 or
22:48
14 different monsters it's a massive box it every monster you fight at the end it
22:53
does that common monster hunter thing of where you have to well you can you don't have to but you should upgrade your
22:59
weapons which completely change how you might play your deck um you'll get
23:05
different equipment from the monster you So if you fire a lightning monster you get a lightning forge you can build
23:10
loads of different weapons and might be able to build a different uh armor set
23:15
or item which yeah can do lots of cool things as well then also you can upgrade your deck and change the cards in your
23:21
deck uh also what's linked to your weapon is the amount of cards of each color that goes in your deck so you're
23:27
constantly evolving your decks always changing my deck from the last session I was playing like a support deck on my
23:34
first deck with the hammer where I'm stunning the monster making other people show cards to deal damage as well as
23:40
spending my cards to give them stuff pay for their cards do lots of other cool things the deck now I'm just dealing
23:47
lots of damage hitting the monster for lots lots of damage especially as you've also got a cool thing where if you pay
23:53
sequence of colors you'll get certain benefits yeah it's it's one of my
23:59
favorite boss battlers I've ever played i haven't played a lot i played Kingdom Death um and I think that's the only
24:05
boss battle I've played oh I played Monster Hunter as well which is is very low down in my opinion i think this is
24:12
the what Monster Hunter should have been um yeah I I would recommend it 10 times
24:18
over and if you don't know what it's about come check out the stream we play um every like other Tuesday so just
24:25
check it out come and join us we'll put the link in the show notes so you can check
24:30
nice one i know when Paul asked you you was like "Oh go on then it's only my favorite bloody game ever."
24:36
Yeah exactly yeah all right yeah it's a bit like him going "Do you fancy doing too many bones?" like uh campaign over a
24:43
year sure do I ever say JP why not just to add in there he's also giving away a
24:48
copy so if you go on to the live stream watch the live stream on the video afterwards that he posts up if you go
24:54
and comment down there and then vote on a monster so you actually get to vote what monster we find next um at the end
25:01
of the campaign uh Reggie Games are basically giving out Yeah giving out a
25:07
copy nice well via pool yeah that's great though right yeah yeah it's pretty good follow on get involved understand
25:13
how it works and maybe get yourself hands on cuz I don't think this game's actually easy to get right is it easy to
25:19
get now no it's not easy to get um I think there there is a retail version
25:24
but I think it's sold out pretty quickly and I think there is going to be another printing run but yeah it's not easy to get there you go tell Rob i know Rob
25:32
keeps angling for someone to sell Primal but no one will no one will i don't know he's like "Oh bless
TURN 3 - Main Event: Escape from the board game bazaar
25:40
[Music]
25:49
him." So to set the scene I've got like a little bit of backstory to start with cuz everyone's going to be kind of
25:55
trapped in a room so this is how you get trapped in a room okay um go easy on me
26:01
this is all made by me and uh yeah this is a bit of creative license going on so
Prologue
26:07
while you're all walking down the streets of Taton Town you'll notice an unfamiliar shop in the streets the bell
26:13
above the door of the board game bazaar jingles merrily a stark contrast to the unsetting chill that permeates the air
26:19
within lured in by the promise of rare first edition copies jp in the corner of your eye albeit it seems quite far away
26:26
you see too many bones dan Frost Punk eerily sparkles in the corner and Becky
26:33
you swear you can hear animal noises akin to Jamanji coming from the back and you see Arknova towering on the top of
26:40
the shelf as is stacked on a cliff edge each box seems to whisper forgotten tales and echoes with unheard laughter
26:48
lord Baron Bishop the shop's owner a gaunt man with eyes with the eyes of obsidian greets you all with a smile
26:54
that seems like the edge of a precipice with a much hearty gusto he welcomes you all welcome welcome this is the board
27:02
game bizarre where your needs are met and your wants and desires are a thing of the past now wait a minute what the
27:10
hell is your brain man jesus if if if I went into a board game shop for real
27:17
and this Baron von Clap Trap decide decides to come at me and go "Welcome I'm [ __ ] leaving
27:25
i'm going to Amazon it's easier it's more convenient for me has anyone else
27:31
got the child catcher vibes from like you bang bang you could be here
27:37
all free today sorry Dave carry on breaking news now let me be the ship and
27:44
your master let us sail to the back where its true kindling is kept to light our fires has he got a pirate hat on
27:51
because I'm suddenly very interested i was kind of inspired by Brian Blessed so that's where
27:56
no misletch misletch his eyebrows move unsettlingly and
28:02
before any of you can whisper a protest his hands wave erratically and as if by magic you're in a new room inside every
28:10
inch of space is devoted to board games shelves stretch impossibly high to the
28:15
ceiling packed edge to edge with brightly colored boxes the titles glow faintly some whispering promises of epic
28:21
adventures others teasing hours of strategy and laughter can I please do a perception check
28:29
the air smells faintly of aged age cardboard wood and hint of something sweet as though nostalgia itself was
28:35
seeping into the atmosphere the shop was small on the outside but now it's wall walls seem to spiral out of control all
28:42
game like it's crackers it's crackers it's actually crackers if you've ever been to Taton there is a board game shop
28:48
down a place called Bath Place which is called Crackers and uh and the walls do feel like they're coming into you as you
28:55
walk because it's so bloody tiny what's his name that gentleman's name is
29:00
Tony that's it there we go work next to Lord Baron Bishop not Lord Baron Bishop no we didn't that's a different ball
29:07
game got it but now the walls seem to spiral out of control board games line the floors the walls floor to ceiling a
29:14
hoorde is paradise a non-gamers partner's nightmare this spark of relation seems to fade as JP cries dan
29:22
shrieks and they realize they are trapped cooly calmly Becky surveys the surroundings she She's got to be the
29:29
cool one i would Here we go so now we have three points of interest you guys can choose okay and you can go to them
29:35
and interact with the things that are there and I'll do a little kind of summary and we'll try and solve some
29:41
puzzles together is this a fighting fantasy book yeah in a whole fighting fantasy book for tonight i feel like I'm
29:48
in an episode of like um Mansions of Madness yeah I feel like I'm there there we go this is what I kind of went for
29:55
right we need some ominous spooky music in the background maybe I'll put that in post i could do a witch's laugh couldn't
30:01
I oh just you wait just you wait right
Chapter 1: The Board Game Shelves
30:06
so you got three points of interest number one the board game shelves number two the long hallway and number three
30:13
the floor okay outside as a collective where you would
30:19
like to go port game shelves i I mean my mine was saying shelves cuz why not
30:24
that's where I usually look cuz Too Many Bones is still there right maybe maybe maybe it was just a to get
30:32
me in the Bordon Bishop it might be Bishop Boy shelves shelves shelves let's look at
30:38
the shelves okay while checking over the shelves you find a note from the baron
30:45
it says "These four shelves seem to be out of sorts lately because one of the
30:50
games has gone missing overnight." You notice the shelves are organized by game genre shelf A party
30:58
games shelf B strategy games shelf C co-op games and shelf D mystery games
31:05
the Baron states that each shelf seems to be missing a game but he can't remember what game it is on on each that
31:12
is missing the games on shelf A are Strong Point
31:17
Origami Love Letter Osflux on shelf B Undaunted Normally 44 Scythe Axis and
31:25
Allies Forbidden Stars and Eclipse and shelf C the shelf has magic engraved on
31:33
its side and on this one there's Eldrich Horror Voidful and Escape the Dark
31:40
Castle you can tell you work in a medical profession jesus ancient [ __ ] Christ i can read that but nobody else
31:46
can if I'm writing it properly it I've got nice i thought that's fine i can I can just lean over to yours and then
31:52
I've realized it in code my code becky's going to be our note taker for this evening and shelf D
32:01
tries so time stories but it's just got a dot between each i
32:07
spy and p I Okay so I'm just noticing
32:12
that the games in the party section the letters begin s o l o strong point
32:17
origami love letter and o flux solo solo nice so maybe the game that's missing is
32:22
a solo game just putting it out there a solo party guess so just as a as a tip
32:28
as well it seems like you're on the right track but on the back of the note is
32:33
scribbled London Paris Beijing and Washington next to it is written "The
32:39
cities have no meaning but being a capital means being first." Capital and first seem to be written in someone
32:45
else's penmanship but you're definitely on the right track there and also if you're listening um if you want to pause
32:50
it and do the puzzle yourself that's So we've got party games strong point
32:56
origyami love letter and ox so I think that's S O L O so on B we've got U N S A
33:04
F E unsafe unsafe oh Becky's crack the good i've never done an escape room in
33:10
real life you know I have to do it now i think you'll be pretty good already you've taken the initiative which is
33:15
number one cuz someone needs to in an escape room because otherwise you just go I don't know what to do so someone needs to start so this is good time's
33:22
ticking 50 quid for this so So that's C sorry B it says magic on
33:27
the side so that M might be included or not and it said Eldrich Voidfall escape
33:33
from the dark escape the dark castle so and it had magic written on the side it did have magic so that's me Eve V
33:40
so magic magic okay magic Eve i'm not sure about
33:46
that so think of a a game that can be played in co-op that might be like Magic
33:52
Eve i will give you guys more clues as it goes along as Magic the Gathering at
33:57
nighttime well when he said Magic I did immediately think Magic the Gathering it's been drummed into my stupid brain
34:03
so mystery game we've got time stories ice spy and pie so we got tip hm i spy
34:14
with an I that's what So tip so it's a solo on the safe Magic Eve tip that's
34:19
what it is there you go we sold it that's it solo so those words will lead you to a board game each one of those
34:25
within that category okay so a solo party game so not solo party game solo
34:31
is the tip clue that will lead you towards the game there we go just one so nice i like that someone's called potato
34:40
you've had your ready breakfast for breakfast haven't you just one boom a strategy game strategy game unsafe
34:47
unsafe nemesis unfathomable unsafe oh um
34:53
other words for unsafe dangerous hazardous hazardous what do you do if
34:58
you do something dangerous what are you taking risky risk risk oh very nice there we go thanks Dave very nice
35:07
i mean look Lord Baron Bishop Ber that later so Magic Eve magic Eve
35:14
which is in the co-op the hard one co-op collection magic Eve it has a co-op mode I should say what about what about
35:21
Mansions of Madness cuz that's a bit It's not really bad isn't Eve as in happens in the evening has it got a dark
35:27
theme could be evening yes i can't My brain went like Halloween yes i was Because it was like Magic Eve but or
35:33
Hallow's Eve is Yeah what's another name for someone that does magic a wizard what's another name for that a warlock
35:42
keep going sorcerer sorcerer um um a charlatan shaman
35:50
a mage mage knight mage knight alan little legend as in kna very good mage
35:57
knight mage knight oh very good well done David i've I've contributed now i
36:03
feel I feel I feel better about myself now welcome to the podcast thanks
36:09
so for mystery we've got tip tip tip of the mystery tip of the tip the iceberg
36:16
so this is a mystery is it clue it is
36:21
clue cludo it's the American version of Clue what's that about a tip then tip a clue it's a clue it's a tip of course
36:28
it's a tip yes very now that's it now we've got noir i got a tip for you i got a tip for you
36:35
walking down a dark alley i got a raging clue she says her name is Goldie her name is
36:41
a solo unsafe magic so when you say clue aloud h suddenly a little box appears in
36:48
front of you and inside there's a little engraving and it says words can hold great power alone but together sentences
36:55
open hearts okay so I just threw up in my mouth a little
37:01
it's it just maybe for later Dan oh nice yeah maybe for later it's not my own feelings can you could you repeat this
37:08
again yeah sure words can hold great power alone but together sentences open
37:14
hearts there we go so so you got two more
Chapter 2: The Chessboard Floor
37:20
things to interact with the long hallway or the floor can we go to the floor
37:26
because I feel I feel like we're in Tony shop yeah I think so and you have to look at the floor you don't want to look at that floor you mean not the floor
37:31
itself but but at floor level there's sometimes you might find a good Yeah are we getting down we're getting down the
37:38
floor ripples beneath you and the more you stare at it it just seems to transform into a gleaming chessboard
37:45
you're no longer standing but hovering gazing down at the vast expanse below the pieces move with purpose pawns march
37:51
knights no Ron no
37:57
love it love it kings and queens command silently the endless board stretches
38:02
across affinity and for a fleeting moment you are its allseeing master you seem to be able to command the chess
38:08
pieces at your will is there a full amount of pieces there to see there is the chess board now sits in a in a
38:15
starting formation so all the pawns are along uh the second row the second row
38:21
um for white and for black all the pieces are there it's just a normal chessboard setup should we move one of
38:27
our pieces white goes first doesn't it so white does go first we're going to do a fool's mate i don't know what that is
38:33
that's a checkmate in three turns oh yeah let's do that then i've got to remember that i need a board in front of me to work it out i mean I've I'm not a
38:40
chess person so I You're doing fools mate are you You can say what you're doing and can we just move one of the
38:46
pawns you don't have to You don't have to physically do anything thank god cuz my brain can't just move one of the
38:51
pawns just move one of the pawns have you ever watched the Queen's Gambit where she plays chess in the ceiling no I got without a board yeah so you can
38:57
say a If you wanted to say A2 B2 you can do that as well or if you want to say a gambit you can say a gambit you can do
39:03
whatever pawn one space forward cuz I've just circled the third so you want to move uh C2 to C3 sure fine so
39:14
what is going on so you do and nothing really happens oh so I am going to give
39:19
you a little clue you don't have all the information to do what you want to do here yet okay let's go and look at the
39:25
long hallway so you'll pass through a narrow spiring hallway where the walls
Chapter 3: The Long Hallway
39:30
are polished wood inlaid with a faintly shimmering metallic pattern and they catch the light as you walk down the
39:36
floor beneath is smooth stone it surface gently curved to guide each step settle
39:41
brass inlay line the walls at intervals casting a soft golden glow that seems to walk as you uh seems to follow you as
39:48
you walk suddenly you're in what seems to be a store room with polished wooden cabinets and drawers lining the walls
39:55
each storage compartment is labeled with gold engraved plaques their lettering precise and elegant the workbench of the
40:01
setter is an impressive piece crafted from rich mahogany with tools laid out meticulously on a velvet line tray tiny
40:08
mele models and intricate B brushes rest in glass dishes catching the light from a brass chandelier overhead the room has
40:15
an air of quiet sophistication where precision reigns above you notice a fine
40:20
elegant plaque that reads "In a game where bishops take flight and queens command the knight I am the move that
40:26
changes fate shifting pieces from checkmate what am I?" On the cabinet in
40:32
front of you you notice all the drawers have little engraved pictures on a title above says "To prove you are human
40:39
please tick the correct box." Tickle boxes that are and the word
40:46
seem to be scratched off what possibly could this mean you've got the little clue in a game where bishops take flight
40:53
and queens command the knight I'm a move that changes fate shifting pieces from checkmate what am I so I'd probably work
40:59
that out first you're a gambit a chessboard no um so it's a move and I
41:06
don't know if you're chess players here probably not good not a good one i I can
41:12
move you along with this bit um it's when you move the king to the castle castle so it's
41:19
castling castle yes so that is tick all the boxes that are castling or possibly
41:26
could just mean the boxes are a moat with a construction site on top of it a horse horse with a man riding it a
41:32
medieval work out in the fields a king sitting in his chair a queen watching over a village and two castles with two
41:39
men visibly arguing at a distance um then press the correct drawers okay
41:46
so these are I think box art covers my brain has gone to board games cuz it's
41:52
Dave and it's a board game related well it's it's to do with castling definitely the first definitely the first we've
41:58
decided yep are we pressing something yeah so you're pressing one and it clicks in like a capture isn't it when
42:04
you're online okay so we press the joke what happens when we press it anything like it clicks in and it doesn't doesn't
42:11
pop back out but it clicks in and it stays in it's funny cuz mine always pops out
42:18
how many boxes five six six i don't think it's the queen she sounds like she's watching stuff that doesn't sound
42:24
castly but she could she'll be watching from her castle window
42:30
I think press the king press the queen one four and five then when you castle
42:37
in chess it's the king and the the the rook basically that switches places
42:43
that's that's very true so forget forget the queen so forget the queen okay the
42:49
king yes and anything to do with a castle the last one so are we saying one
42:56
five and six i'm thinking there's only two cuz there's only two pieces in the castling that move together good point
43:02
so I think you picked two of them but that's just where my brain has gone one and five so five was the queen so five
43:10
and five well one's a moat definitely then you got two men in front of a bloody castle should we try that
43:16
first yeah so I I think four and six okay not one
43:21
okay four and six then we've already pressed one haven't we we need to unpress it can we unpress it you can
43:27
press four and six and those they click in and with an audible click it pops
43:34
open and inside one of the drawers you see the words remove the wizard and in
43:40
the other you find five different chess openings one Queen's Gambit white
43:46
sacrifice a pawn two Evans Gambit is a bishop's
43:52
sacrifice three the cockrain gambit the sorry the cockrain cockrain crane i said
43:58
[ __ ] raining [ __ ] raining raining [ __ ] it's raining [ __ ]
44:03
hallelujah um [ __ ] rain gambit white sacrifices a bishop or knight four the
44:09
fried liver attack white sacrifices a knight and five the open Sicilian
44:15
defense black sacrifices a pawn the room quickly fades away and you're back in
Chapter 4: Return to the Chessboard Floor
44:20
the main room so did we do that right then yeah you did it right okay not quite sure what we
44:28
did guys we pressed buttons it worked that's what you do when you play games just give it a go sorry you You You're
44:34
not a robot you're fine you're allowed in this doesn't sound like Oblivion remastered that I've been
44:40
playing for the last 30 hours so now you have all the clues you need okay to be
44:47
able to do what you want with a chess board anything on this chess board Davey that signifies any relation to gambits
44:54
that we have or we're just trying these randomly so you've got from the I will give you a clue so from your previous
45:00
ones it will tell you or guide you to what you want to be doing well the other
45:06
one said remove the wizard so you've had another clue and we got sent you've also had about words
45:13
alone so within that room you were given a load of board games
45:21
maybe put them in a sentence just one risk just one risk
45:27
mage knight tip mage knight clue ignore the the tip mage knight clue just one
45:33
risk ignore the clue so just one risk so the clue is just one risk remove the
45:39
wizard to remove mage okay yeah oh okay so just one risk so do one of them just
45:45
risk the knight so you get rid of the knight uh which is either the cockrain or fried liver it depends pretend that I
45:52
knew which one yeah it depends on cuz the cockrain gambit removes the bishop or nine and the fried liver onion
45:59
sandwich or whatever it was removes the white knight so if we're playing chess and and
46:07
the board's set up as it no moves have been made white goes first so I would say you go with four for the fried liver
46:15
maneuver never heard of that is that real i thought you just making some [ __ ] I'm not making up it's real that's where
46:22
my head's gone logically yeah i mean crack crack on number four we would like to enact the fried liver sandwich
Chapter 5: The Trouble with Zoo Mascots
46:27
maneuver so you move the piece the chest pieces along the board and suddenly a thunderous boom erupts so loud it shakes
46:34
the walls and sends a shock wave through the air in that
46:40
instant cry bless it and turn back up again in that instant of force unseen hits you
46:47
scattering you has farted hasn't he scatting you into separate rooms as though the universe itself has decided
46:53
to re reshuffle reality you hear a voice so shrill it seems to pierce all your
46:58
minds the bar is my puppet you should not have come your souls will be
47:04
mine let the people slaughter dance puppets dead
47:12
what is it like to be you i just wonder i really I did say we're going to be walking in his mind tonight yeah I I've
47:18
just got to stop sniffing glue on the weekend that's what I've got to do that's what it is it's the worst week to
47:24
stop sniffing glue so we got a crazy woman who doesn't want us to be here yeah what's going on
47:32
what's I don't know mate i don't know with this so am I still taunted
47:38
she said anymore she says the baron's mine your souls
47:44
will be something she said "Sorry if you couldn't understand what I was saying." Funny voice the Baron is my puppet you
47:51
should not have come your souls will be mine like meeples to the slaughter dance puppets dance okay it just sounds like
47:59
that line from Mortal Kombat the film from 1995 goes "Your soul will be mine."
48:08
Shanghart with Becky becky you look around and notice it seems familiar here
48:14
the surroundings unfold like a living blueprint the enclosures conser
48:19
conservation project in the distance habitats bin with exotic wildlife while zookeepers scientists and
48:25
conservationists work tirelessly you hear the call of a rare animal in the distance as you walk around you seem to
48:32
be greeted with three zoo entrances you notice under each there are symbols and a plaque inside your mind you hear the
48:39
baron's voice once they are matched the way will open you've got to match each
48:44
zoo with its correct mascot animal and special exhib exhibit so the three zoos are Planet Paws Wild Wonders and the
48:53
Biod Dome Dream the mascots are a capabara a red kangaroo and a snow
49:00
leopard and on the plaque it reads and the special exhibits are Australia
49:05
walkabout Arctic habitat and underground tunnel cams and etched into the entrance
49:12
there is a clue and the clues are and this will give us our kind of how to match them the red kangaroo is not the
49:19
mascot of Planet Paws but it is at the zoo with the Australia walkabout biodome
49:25
Dream features the underground tunnel cams the snow leopard lives in the Arctic habitat and Wild Wonders does not
49:33
have the snow leopard i've I've discarded four cards
49:38
and can I get mulligan so I very nearly did an arc no scenario that you would have to play but I thought you'd have to
49:44
play it without the actual components and how hard would that be but so I decided against as hard as this probably
49:50
maybe as hard as cuz this is this is now reminding me of the the uh scene in
49:57
Harry Potter and the Philosopher Stone where Hermione has to figure out which bottle it is that gets you through the
50:02
fire to Well as we know Quir was there spoiler alert say what on the back the
50:09
other bottle go makes you go back so I kind of want to do a line of things like a like a logic puzzle have I just ripped
50:16
off Harry Potter like not knowingly like with the whole chess board and everything else no Ron it's been in the
50:22
back of No Ron no you you must go on behind it as well
50:30
no Ron no
50:37
yeah so I think Arctic snow leopard planet paws yep yeah oh this little
50:44
logic box it worked your little logic box worked yep um Red Kangaroo is
50:50
Australia and Wild Wonders oh I didn't get fair enough with that one there's Wild Wonders yep so that leaves Biodome
50:58
Dream Capibara and Underground Tunnels yeah there we go get in with your little
51:04
your little logic box have it so a wishing sound sweeps you off your feet foot first you crash bang back into the
Chapter 6: Dangerous Dart Dealore Adventure
51:11
shop the smell of cardboard and painted pieces fills your senses this is only a brief rest bite as once again suddenly
51:18
you are both teleported away a small gnome looking creature swears at you as you bar as he barges by rash dead
51:27
jp nice jp giddy with glee knows exactly where his feet have landed him dart
51:32
bounds over to you all the hog under her haunches squeals his hellos dart starts
51:38
to explain we've we've been traveling for hours searching for a lost treasure
51:43
hidden in the wilds the path splits ahead and each direction seems equally perilous the decision we make now could
51:49
be the difference between finding the treasure or facing an untimely end she's cocky is she yeah well I try not to do a
51:57
lighter voice and then like I think it works though for gear locks yeah exactly it works right it's no mag yeah don't
52:05
don't sue us for for ripping off your your characters and license for this so artistic license is fine
52:13
so your party you guys must choose between three paths each has its own set
52:19
of risks and rewards so you've got a dark cavern in front of you mhm so it's
52:24
a dark and echoing cave looms ahead you've got the thorny thicket the path
52:31
is overgrown with sharp thorns making it nearly impossible to move quickly you've got the cliffside trail the narrow path
52:39
winds along a steep cliff one misstep could send you tumbling down however it's a quick route and if you're lucky
52:44
you could find a shortcut so what would you like to choose we're going down thorny thicket
52:52
or cliff and quick thorny thicket is you've gone into the thorny thicket why not so the path winds through dent brush
53:01
and thorns that bite into your armor it's slow and painful now who wants to
53:06
roll the dice me go on down go down roll the dice so this is going to determine what's going to happen to you
53:13
three three it's good right it's good low low numbers are good yeah the vines
53:19
move too late you realize it's a vine lasher beast entangles your gear you must spend a skill dice to break free
53:26
and then have a battle so how many skill dice do I have we are going to have a
53:32
little roll off to see who wins okay and this is literally we're just going to roll some dice and then see who gets
53:38
whatever number i've rolled a four four versus who four four four ching go on
53:44
i'll say you win that that's easy enough boom you win the battle defender breaks ties yeah defender breaks ties and
53:50
random [ __ ] [Music] did I kill it did I kill it please did I
53:55
kill it you did kill it you find an old climbing rope and basically you use this rope so you'll be able to skip the next
54:02
encounter you all get out alive battered breathless but unbroken your party emerges from the wilds you survived the
54:09
thorns and you've earned your scars dart appears from the brushes there are you done messing about she tosses in a
54:16
bundle at your feet inside the relic you were seeking real intact somehow already
54:23
claimed the ground splits beneath your feet light engulfves you and you suddenly as your journey began it ends
Chapter 7: The Three Spires
54:30
pop back in the bizaar you hear the thin raspy cackle in front of you and you see
54:36
three spires you have a feeling that the relic in your hand should be placed on one but which one on each of the spire
54:45
there is three symbols and let me just add the little cackle thanks mate there you go so on
54:52
the on the each spire there is there is a symbol a matchbox a horse and a
54:58
heart on one a castle a moat and a witch on the
55:03
other and on the third a bone a zoo and a frozen tundra
55:10
i think it's the first one because of the uh of the of the sentence that we got at the very very start about words
55:16
being yeah together and it heart being the end of it so when you expect the relic on the bottom it says you must
55:23
match them the right way that was not helpful um can I eat
55:31
the relic you cannot eat the relic throw relish by by this by this time I'm
55:37
really hungry now i don't know that a heart a matchbox and a horse means anything to me
55:45
bone zoo and tundra that's our gay favorite games isn't it castle moat and a witch
55:52
i don't know what that could be can you read out that um thing that we had at the beginning the words in the sentence
55:58
words can hold power but sentences open hearts what will happen if we place it
56:03
on the wrong i mean who knows you might fail you might get trapped in this in this room forever forever
56:11
a good ending and a bad ending there's loads of board games i mean is it that bad maybe Bone Zoo and Tundra's too
56:16
obvious cuz that's what we just did that's Well that's just kind of our favorite game that's That's a lure i think that's a lure i think that's gonna
56:22
like favorite games that's what got us in the bloody shop in the first place so let's not do that that's true but your
56:27
task was about Too many Bones my task was about the zoo and his task was about Yeah wasteland but again we walked into
56:34
this perilous escape room of Davey's mind based on our favorite games didn't we we
56:40
did so what what's attracting you to Hearts Matchbox and because of that sentence because it's less obvious and
56:48
it was about 9 hours ago we we found that information out
56:53
so so at least probably that so we're so we're sacking off the castle moat and
56:59
the witches cuz that's that castling thing we already did right so unless that had some relevance i
57:07
So the heart the matchbox and the horse is totally separate to anything we've done should we just go for that then i think we do it and if we die we die
57:13
don't we yeah fair one all right yeah insert relic spire one correct
57:18
so the links were that basically he's he's been saying match loads right so that's your hint he's be He keeps saying
57:24
match to you of Baron i'll give you a horse back horse is a knight that was
57:30
your biggest Yeah yeah had to sacrifice a knight earlier and heart is it opens
57:35
the heart well done i didn't I couldn't No brain but with
57:41
with that yeah yeah i've contributed that's fine i've had my old brand this morning suddenly the baron bundles in i
Epilogue
57:49
knew you would all do it just from the looks of you you are board game fanatics i knew it you have freed this shop from
57:55
the curse these poor souls each game in here used to be a gamer but they were locked away forever after being enticed
58:02
by the cheap cheap discounted Kickstarters well done you well done
58:08
wait is that it did we do it well done can we know what would have happened had
58:14
we put the relic on the wrong side oh yeah i do kind of want to know what the failure if you fell yeah you have a
58:20
feeling you were once something but right now you can't quite place it someone moves a piece and pumps their
58:25
fist in the air great I needed that card to finally finish my zoo you also hear people playing other games in the
58:31
background but you don't really know what to make of it you become board games
58:37
trapped as a soulless become your favorite game as a as a board game in the shop that was why there you go
58:43
there's there's the random puzzly adventure escape room yeah I don't know what kind of brain you need to have to
58:49
to pull that together but well done yeah that's good it was It was a It was
58:55
different i feel like I've been placed on a journey i don't know how I got here i don't know
59:02
how I got through it i don't know what happened in the end but I got through it yeah yeah i'm here now well done yeah
59:09
well done but no well done Davia but I would like to do some escape rooms with you guys cuz then that would work don't send me don't send me they're good fun
59:15
if you get one of these logic puzzles don't don't send me them i'll I'll be I'll be at in the canteen next to that
59:22
wait like cheering you all on on the monitors you'll be locked in that room in the crystal maze where you you'll
59:27
have to buy me out with another with with one cuz that's going to cost you 5 seconds in the dome no but we're not going to do it not going to save
59:34
yourself don't buy me out i want the green one we'll cut you in at the end we'll cut you in yeah yeah yeah yeah cuz you're just bloody silver ticket did you
59:41
win yes we won what did you win i won a rock climbing experience
TURN 4 - The Penultimate Turn
59:52
[Music] yeah there we go moving on to the penultimate turn so now we're going to
59:59
talk about what we've got coming up so starting with you JP as we as you were last last time we'll start with you yeah
1:00:05
I I'm going to um probably say something that's going to sound really wanky something out like a this is a not a
1:00:11
wanky announcement but wanky alert yeah a wanky alert because what I'm about to
1:00:16
say probably does sound a bit like that so basically um this weekend I'm going
1:00:22
over to the Netherlands which is just randomly over the because I've been invited to a kind of gaming weekend with
1:00:30
uh name drop David Turtzy oh nice yeah no way i didn't know about this i know
1:00:36
i've not talked about it that much cuz I don't know why i just How have you not talked about it david is your best mate
1:00:42
you love him i know i've been busy at work a lot yeah you have it's just been this thing happening in the future and
1:00:49
I've just I don't I'm not a brager or anything you know what like I don't like that you're very You're very uh Yeah I
1:00:55
don't like to kind of go so I Yeah that's happening this week i went "Oh [ __ ] this is literally now
1:01:02
this weekend oh my god." So I'm not quite mentally prepared for what I've let myself in for but yeah no he he
1:01:08
invited me bless him cuz for those that don't know I've I've kind of met David
1:01:13
obviously we did the podcast together and I met him again at Essen we've had
1:01:18
long chats about games and just like talking about his designs and things and I'm just like happily listen and absorb
1:01:24
it all and then he's at Gridcon so again Captain's Chair as a game is released
1:01:30
it's one of his and Nigel Buckles and I've been interested in in that and I've got an early copy of that so he again
1:01:37
it's just been a lot a lot of communication and talking about his stuff and he's just really a fanatic
1:01:42
about his own stuff like you should be and uh and you said yeah what are you doing this this particular weekend and
1:01:48
actually I had nothing on and I thought why not why not so I said to Shell I'm
1:01:53
out said is it all right can I escape do it so I went sort it I'm going to do it
1:01:58
so I'm going to be a bit of a pioneer for this thing because actually it might open it up for for others in the group to to maybe come in following years he
1:02:04
does it every Oh nice i say he's done it it's his third one okay um games planned
1:02:10
yeah a few but there's a lot of prototype games as you can appreciate of
1:02:16
new stuff that I can't mention it cuz I don't know what they are and even when I
1:02:21
have played some of them I probably can't mention it on the podcast sign an NDA so sorry listeners it's going to be
1:02:27
pretty boring but um but yeah hopefully I'll get to to try some some latest
1:02:32
design stuff out that he's got in the pipeline i think he's got six prototypes ready i'm like okay I'll try some of
1:02:38
that but it's it's kind of like a friends and family thing that he's organized so it's just going to be general games oh that's really nice i'm
1:02:44
really pleased that I just thought we'll give it a go and yeah fun i don't really
1:02:49
know many people there um but it's odd it yeah that's what board gaming is
1:02:54
about right have a bloody awesome time yeah so that's Yeah as I said wanky
1:03:00
alert but Well it's not I expected something else it's not wacky at all for
1:03:06
my penultimate turn I I'm going to the moon because I feel that I need to trump you so I'm going to do a Katy Perry i
1:03:13
was say you know Katy Perry yeah and I'm going to play I'm just going to play Pesy on the moon nice uh so um [ __ ] you
1:03:23
so that sounds good fun how about yourself Dan what are you getting uh I can't I can't compete with that um on
1:03:28
any level uh but what I am doing is We should have ended with JP shouldn't we that's the should totally should have
1:03:35
done um but um what I'm I'm playing the new hotness tomorrow night and I I can't
1:03:40
wait um tomorrow night is all about this year's board game battleground winner
1:03:47
it's a terraforming Mars yeah baby look look look in all seriousness Mars needs
1:03:52
terraforming yeah yeah yeah and one No one's done it before it's a prototype game no no no no one's done it before
1:03:58
and when we finish pack it all away and go "Oh that's great curly one." Uh and then and then when it comes to playing
1:04:05
it next time I'll go terraforming martin needs terraforming again it it needs to
1:04:11
happen look we we haven't done it it It needs to happen now we haven't done a good enough job that it keeps terforming
1:04:16
i'm terraforming itself resets itself so we need to set up again Curly Win again
1:04:22
so that's how it will go i'm looking forward to it i've not played it for a while so I love TM we all do to be fair
1:04:27
it's great are you playing with the prelude bits he's bringing his his his gear he's got Prelude 2 i'm going to
1:04:33
hopefully pick up a copy of Prelude 2 at the UK Games Expo when I go i think it's really good it really does mix it up a
1:04:39
little bit especially when you can change the um awards and what's the
1:04:44
other thing i've played it before with Yeah that really does just change the
1:04:50
flavor a little bit yes it's still it's still Terrible Mars one of the best games ever just behind ARN Nova in my
1:04:55
opinion um but it's it does just mix it up nicely i love it i'm looking forward to playing it um I am I noticed I'm not
1:05:02
playing because I didn't sign up quick enough you didn't you didn't that didn't And you don't want to play with five because
1:05:08
I did i got galactic yeah five unfortunately is too much yeah no it is it is yeah i'm going to pick up I'm
1:05:15
going to try and see what extras I can pick up at UKG i'm only going to be there the Sunday sorry I'm not with you
1:05:20
guys apologies i'm working i'm working i'm wondering can you pick up not you I
1:05:27
mean can one pick up the kind of giga terraforming Mars there the map I would
1:05:32
love to play this once once yeah once just let's do a day we'll play giga
1:05:38
terraforming Mars we need seven copies of the game to play it cuz you need about a million like oceans or whatever
1:05:43
i didn't think of that yeah how many copies do you need you do need more than I've got a 3D printer it's all right we just make that we got my copy as well
1:05:49
i've got I've got some um UV forming resin i could make some but you you can get the maps from Etsy that is true you
1:05:56
can So you don't think we'll be able to buy it from the UK GE is that it's not an official product will there be some like board game extras not plugging
1:06:03
anyone but ballgame extras.co.uk.uk sell all of the extra stuff for a terraforming Mars you ever need anything terraforming Mars relate that's official
1:06:09
you go to them but I don't think they sell any of the neoprene mats no unless it's an official release from Fire it's
1:06:15
a fan expansion yeah so I think they did have them there last year though actually some of the fan stuff maybe
1:06:21
might keep my eye open might keep my eye open yeah but I would I wouldn't mind playing Giga Terraforming Mars is where
1:06:27
we basically have some sets and then you have a Mars and then another Mars and then another Mars and you play like and
1:06:32
they all need terforming and they all need they all need it yeah star Trek like 4D chess 40 chess yeah maybe maybe
1:06:39
not maybe no is that too much but that is my penultimate turn excitement thing
1:06:44
the UK G i know that's boring but it's not oh I'm trying so hard to spend
1:06:50
almost zero money this month so that I've got you spend spending money for when I go yeah so that's my plan i
1:06:58
haven't got anything necessarily kind of lined up i think I might try and do a bit more research this year and actually
1:07:04
look at what's going to be there and have a little nosy around we are crap at that so yeah well I really crap at that
1:07:10
generally but you guys know where you know oh we're going to go to the store first cuz that's coming out i've just I'm just wandering like a little happy
1:07:16
little wanderer i prefer to wander there's a couple of stores that I need to go to this year but I'm only going to be there to Sunday so whatever I want to
1:07:22
try and get hold of which likely I'm going to go to DRA stores and get hold of the expansions for Galactic Cruise but by Sunday they might have all gone i
1:07:29
know that sometimes they allocate certain stock to certain days but you know you might have some friends that
1:07:34
might be going very true i'll see you Saturday night let us know if you do cuz I don't know anyone that's going that
1:07:39
will buy them for you my plan my plan is to see you Saturday night so that's the plan is come
1:07:45
straight up and join you um so I finish in the afternoon and I come straight up but the thing about Expo is that it's
1:07:51
not a typical release window for games no it's not it's so not a lot of I would
1:07:56
say new stuff comes out but they do like I say they demo but they do sometimes demo stuff but they also preview this is
1:08:03
coming yeah usually an SM release but this is coming out this year kind of thing so good to see i find there's a
1:08:09
lot of there's a lot of oh this is coming on Kickstarter in however many months which no disrespect to anyone
1:08:14
that does that there annoys the crap out of me because I look at it and go this looks amazing I want it now can't have
1:08:20
it now four years like what I that's where I found out about Perseverance was
1:08:25
from David Tury himself and it was like from that moment on this sounds amazing and then it was like 4 years later and
1:08:32
then the game released on Kickstart it was a long time that you had that prototype long time and then there it
1:08:37
was Well Kickstarter is such a minefield at the moment depending where they're shipping from everything else though isn't it
1:08:43
it's such a dangerous place right now what country you live what country yeah exactly i don't back on there anymore
1:08:49
because I I'm I I like to back a lot i used to like I back like well over 50 games on on Kickstarter but the last
1:08:56
thing I did back was the Tracher expansion because it's 10 years and I backed the first one when it first came
1:09:01
out and it's got to be done and it's Tracarium and it's Tracar and it wasn't that expensive that was one of the first I ever backed
1:09:07
tricky one 10 years ago i had to back it it's a It's a no-brainer back absolutely and it was a good price it was for the
1:09:14
extras if you've got the collector's box just got the upgrade bits so the bags
1:09:19
and pouches and I did go for the wooden trick tokens though i'm not going to lie
1:09:25
with the I did pimp them up i didn't do that yeah the No the trick the trick tokens uh which which you don't need to
1:09:32
do that because everyone else is wooden in that player i haven't done that sod it i might do that yeah I might i didn't
1:09:39
think I thought Yeah next you should just get the spell sorry the tricks tricks like little lifeline versions of
1:09:46
the materials you could build them in front of you that's for their 20 years [Laughter]
1:09:52
but yeah I'm looking forward to the arcane arts so what are you looking forward to at the expo Becky what's
1:09:57
going on there well we are doing just a little you know a little event in um the
1:10:05
Friday That's brand new information brand new information we've not mentioned it at all i mean to be honest
1:10:11
we shouldn't really off because we haven't I haven't written it yet so we don't know what we're doing but we have because it's on the beginning of every
1:10:16
episode as a promo yes but I mean the thing is I haven't actually written you
1:10:21
know it's not been constructed yet so um it's there yeah it's it's wafting around in in in potential yeah so yeah come on
1:10:29
down and join us if you fancy saying hello or you couldn't get into shut up and sit down and we're going to be
1:10:35
sloppy second that's fine we don't mind it we're opposite the Terry Pratchett like
1:10:40
reimagining like rebirth last cuz I really wanted to go to that yeah it looked really good becky wanted to
1:10:47
abandon her own live episode to go to the Terry Pratchett um celebration
1:10:55
same sarah Pretch would absolutely be up for that I'm sure yeah I know so yeah come down and join us on the Friday at
1:11:01
12:00 um in the Piaza uh I can't remember what room it is i think it's a dice room yeah it is a dice room um
1:11:09
where we're going to have a live episode so uh come and rest your feet and chill out a bit and have a bit of a laugh and
1:11:15
a sandwich we have a photo frame with my picture there no well can that be arranged i'm going to dress up as you
1:11:21
Dan what i'm going to dress up as you you have to shave your hair off first no I've got a bald cap
1:11:27
nice nice but what I'm really looking forward to is just being involved in the in the space kind of just hanging out
1:11:34
with people that are like-minded maybe a bit of bring and buy action can't lie you the bring and bite well I didn't buy
1:11:40
much from it last time so I haven't been for the last two years to bring them i need I need to change that the queue is
1:11:46
always But then remember like two years ago when that guy was carrying like a whole like two cages worth of stuff yeah
1:11:52
now they've stopped it yes which is a good idea yeah so they've put a limiter on it haven't they so that might mean that you only take your best games not
1:12:00
your kind of chaff that is just crap and no one's interested in hopefully so yes I I'm sure I will uh brave the cues and
1:12:07
go into the bringer by and wander around and see what else there is to see fair yeah nice yeah I'm looking forward to it
1:12:13
i'm going to I'm going to go more planned than I usually do cuz I realized that Essen last year I did a lot of prep
1:12:20
for that and when I went in I was uh yeah I actually enjoyed a little bit more and I think I need to cuz I
1:12:27
streamlined what games interested me what games I wanted to see and then I just went and saw those cuz you can get
1:12:33
a bit lost otherwise sometimes yeah 100% um but expos are usually more about playing games though compared to Essen
1:12:41
anyway so maybe we'll just play games and I'll throw that out the window who knows not looking forward to the con
1:12:48
crod that we always well everyone always gets when you come back kind of spending a week in a big massive hanger with
1:12:54
thousands and thousands of people yeah i'm hoping I'm getting my illness out now and I won't like my immune system
1:13:01
will be so on fire I won't get let's Let's see what happens maybe
1:13:07
hopefully it's just raining and horrible outside so that yes cuz usually it's really sunny whenever we go and you end
1:13:14
up going outside you're like "Oh oh," you end up blinded by the sun because you've been inside for hours and hours
1:13:20
it is rank when it's hot yeah yeah but it's got to be done do love it yeah i
1:13:25
just wish they'd have those potato twies that they have in Essen although you said they didn't have time we were maybe
1:13:32
because they're bringing them to the expo wouldn't that be great if we see potato twirlies I am going to be living
1:13:37
my best life adri I think Adrian would cry i think you would see a tear of joy
1:13:43
from this literally for those who don't know when I'm when I'm saying potato twies I mean it's kind of like a
1:13:49
spiralized potato fried potato fried potato with usually paprika or whatever else on it
1:13:56
to dust and it's just deep fried one giant twirly deep fried chip what is not
1:14:01
to love it is amazing it's fried perfectly as well yeah it is oh yeah it
1:14:06
is yeah it's good it's very good if they had that that wouldn't that just be like
1:14:12
the absolute There you go that would That'd be perfection that would be perfection we need to go anywhere else
1:14:17
just live there my diet will be off that day yeah yeah yeah same
1:14:22
right and myself so I've got Pax Illuminatum coming up i'm looking
1:14:27
forward to that i got it out the other day and taught myself it for a little mock play through and it's as I remember
1:14:35
it um it's quite a unique concept where
1:14:40
it's very puzzly but in the same time feels forexy um you've got a lot of
1:14:46
different actions you can do one of them is kind of the attack action and quotations heavy quotations
1:14:54
and yeah I'm really looking forward to getting that to the table and playing a four player cuz I think it will really
1:15:00
sing so I mean we played it at um Essen was it Essen yeah it was yeah we played
1:15:06
at Essen two years ago um and we really enjoyed it then we played with uh two
1:15:12
Dutch guys yeah and yeah it was just real unique decision space along with
1:15:20
very impactful turns some cool little combos you could do with what cars you've got in your hand
1:15:27
yeah I'm just really looking forward to it so that's what I'm going to get to the table and as soon as I've played it I will give some feedback yeah you want
1:15:34
to learn more we did an episode with Oliver Kylie who's the designer so we literally talked about PAX illuminatum
1:15:40
for about 45 minutes so it's Yeah it surprised me what it packs into that little bloody box is i've got the I've
1:15:47
got the neoprene mat and the box is the box is like this big and the neoprene mat is like the length of a table so if
1:15:54
I want to take the game anywhere it's like you put the neopre mat over your shoulder and carry this little box and it's like it's no longer that travel
1:16:01
accessible i don't know the mat same with tiny epic Game of Thrones it's a bit like that you got the play mat looks lovely but the the box is just tiny this
1:16:08
doesn't make no sense can his mat go in there yeah fold it onto a little square
1:16:14
slightly defeats the point doesn't it it does but it's nice having the mat of course it is of course it is so there we

1:16:36
