hello and welcome to the who's Turners anyway podcast the podcast all about our gaming group and of course board games
0:28
I'm Dan your current first player and I'm joined by other players JP how there Rob ciao and Adrien hello as we talk
0:36
about the evolution of board games this is when we like if you could see us we would wave our arms in the air and
0:43
go as we go back in time so you just got the sound effect we just got the sound effect that's all I can do um but before
0:48
we do any of that how are we all doing all good all good yeah pretty good this
0:53
week we're definitely in the uh the route or road to crimbo yes it's December it's beginning
1:00
to look a little bit like Christmas it is a little bit I'm I'm all right now cuz I'm a pretty I'm one of these guys
1:05
with Christmas where I don't like to listen to Christmas songs too early because they get burnt out right so if I
1:12
start mid November by the 10th of December I've had enough of them ask me
1:17
what month I started listening ask me what month I started listening to Christmas songs yeah but
1:23
that that's because it's your job August J I would have gotten my test August no
1:29
I'm remember working in toys when I worked in a toy department and you would get the Christmas toy list out in March
1:37
and they'd be like think about think about how you can set up your department to make most of these Christmas toys and that's like we haven't even had Easter
1:43
yet can we not can we can we bug off yeah that's crazy no yeah so basically
1:49
in the car driving and the kids are like look put heart Christmas on they'd love it like nope not yet not until the 1 and
1:56
I relented about November the 28th cuz I'm not an evil no but you still November but once once
2:02
I'm in I'm good like I'm ready now and I'm I'm feeling quite Christmassy we're watching Christmas films doing all that
2:07
kind of stuff so I'm I'm good nice got good good spills nice Rob hello how are
2:13
you I'm very good mate I'm not seeing your beautiful face for a little bit it's been a while but um no I'm very very good this week's been awesome so I
2:20
started my new job nice so happy uh going well so how's your new boss uh
2:25
he's away all right nice I've heard he's a bit of a [ __ ] no he's he's been looking after me but for the podcast listeners I'm now
2:31
working for JP it's me so a that's nice I I threw up a little in my mouth there
2:37
we just sit and talk about ball games all day so it's fine um but it's not wrong no it's been good I'm very much
2:42
like JP like Christmas isn't until December the 1 this year's been a rough
2:47
year and the kids were like can we just start listening to high xou xmus at the beginning of November and I was like yes
2:53
great so yeah we've been listening to Heart Christmas for pretty much just over a month now it's been great before
2:59
bonfire oh mate I couldn't care less about a bonfire night could not care less do you know how we got out of going
3:05
to fireworks displays we went to a ball game week we went to matcon so me and Rob in my Infinite
TURN 2 - Let's Talk About Hex
3:12
Wisdom I'd already said yes to matcon I don't know August went in the diary yeah
3:19
didn't really kind of clock what night it wasn't actually on bonfire night it was the weekend of so he didn't really
3:25
clock that as a thing going on and then yeah it was Oh What thinking about going a bonfire night and I like sorry I've
3:31
got something in the calendar guy forks will haunt you in your in your sleep well he can do
3:36
one you know he's done enough bad things he has he has and failed at those attempts as well exactly you're probably
3:42
safe you're safe take care Adrien and your beautiful little face don't ask why
3:48
cuz you don't want the answer oh no I genuinely care it's been a very busy it
3:54
feels like nearly 2 and a half months at this point but certainly very busy couple of weeks and then my grandad
3:59
unfortunately fell over at 91 years of age and so 6 and 1 half hours in A&E with 18 stitches and bunch of X-rays and
4:07
all that a lot later so yeah it just felt like so I had to cancel that a load of board games in for the weekend and
4:12
had to cancel that but right thing to do right yeah yeah yeah he's fine bit shaken bit sore bit bruised um but yeah
4:20
he's he's he's all good so yeah it's one of those where he's just like I'm already tired at the start of the week
4:26
and then the week's just being busy but yeah life's full that's how I like I feel full minute I don't have much room
4:32
to cope with anything else but I got a few friends coming down and um we'll talk about it in a little bit but I've
4:37
got um like a every New Year's we tend to have sort of a bit of a board gaming group for the New Year's Eve sort of
4:43
thing into New Year and all that lot so talk a little bit about that because I've got some interesting challenges I have to face for that one at the moment
4:49
but um we'll talk about that when we get to the hex section nice nice nice that's
4:56
me speaking of which shall we should we do it seg let's do
5:08
it so let's talk about hex what have we been doing in the board gaming World rob
Rob - Quacks of Quedlinburg
5:15
you first well I I got to play the latest hotness um I'm not sure if you're aware it's a small game you might not
5:20
have heard of it um quacks of quedlinburg I think it's just come out isn't it yeah you know what I've played
5:26
it for the very first time and and Josh JP's son absolutely destroyed us he did
5:33
he destroyed us it was so bad but we we played with Josh and my daughter Ruby um
5:39
and we had a blast I really enjoyed it I get why it's popular and and we wanted a
5:44
game that we could play with the kids and I bought it to play at Christmas so I popped it and and we got it to the
5:51
table and we had a blast it was good fun it's great fun it's a great game it's a great game we just played bass didn't we
5:56
yeah so I bought the mega pack the Mega Box so the other expansions to go in but because we' never played it before just
6:03
play B the basame got got plenty in there and it was it was really good fun it was simple it straightforward and you
6:08
know when just like you're not in the mood for like a really heavy game and it just it fit perfectly so yeah quacks I'm
6:15
not sure if if you haven't heard of it check it out it's really yeah it might be available at all good uh game stores
6:23
to Rob's Christmas guide yeah this year you should buy quack of qu but yeah
6:28
you're right though like you were looking for a family game yeah yeah and it's just the one of the go-to family
6:33
games that most people will probably have already bought we we were playing kitos with our wife weren't we and my
6:39
wife like she doesn't dislike board gaming she does well she does she does
6:45
until she's playing a Bard game she goes oh it's really good so we were playing kabito obviously a pushy luck game and
6:51
then we were talking about quacks and I thought it' be good one play at Christmas so so yeah it's been on the shelf for a little while but yeah
6:57
something that I can convince my wife to play even the base game comes with what four or five different recipe sets I think
7:04
it's four isn't it so you're kind of going to get four different at least four different games out of it before you've even put in the expansion you the
7:09
variant board on the other side yeah yeah I'm not sure about that I don't know what it does what does the other
7:15
side of the board day you can move um is it the rat marker I don't know if
7:20
it's the rat marker I think it's instead of the water marker yeah there's another droplet you're right there's another droplet and I think you can move that
7:26
along and as you move that along it gives you like oneoff bonuses and stuff like that so is that instead of pushing it on the the main track is it okay so
7:34
I'm pretty sure that I'm pretty sure I remember doing something I didn't know if that was the expansion or not but I think that is in the
7:40
basame and uh yeah it's all right I think I actually prefer the base one but with an expansion mixed in personally
7:46
but I think next time we'll probably Chuck on one at least in if not both we'll see but it was fun and the kids
7:51
enjoyed it and Josh just absolutely loved kicking our asses didn't he a monster Crow skulls no he buys the green
7:58
ones oh okay just Sly green full green is that the one that puts the white
8:04
things back in the bag no it's the ones that um you get rubies I think at the
8:10
end oh yeah if it's like the second to last yeah that's he just buys he gets enough and he buys four the four green
8:17
token and just keeps buying them nice so he's just like when he's playing there a green token number four Bam Bam B there
8:23
another four we did get to the end and he he he may may have been buying more than two
8:29
of you're cheating Jos no no I've only bought three I bought two greens and that one now you buy two mate you buy
8:36
two and you can't buy the two of the same color I was going to say he can't by two the same how long have you been doing this for all
8:41
game oh might be why you won might it might be why you won but who cares but
8:46
he deserved it like he smashed it so um on the last turn took ages cuz he was trying to figure out if anyone could
8:52
catch him he was so far ahead it wasn't it wasn't even possible but um yeah it was fun a lot of
8:59
fun so yeah that's that's what I've been up to cool JP have you been playing i'
JP - Captains Chair with Dávid Turczi
9:05
been playing lots of games um after gridon that I've already talked about at length on the gridon episode which we
9:12
just released so I kind of don't want to regurgitate the same stuff really so I'm
9:18
going to talk about a game that I have talked about gcom which is captain's chair but I'm not actually going to talk
9:23
about captain's chair cuz I've already talked about it but I um ended up getting a game with David tury name
9:29
which was just awesome like it was an amazing um experience and I've been
9:35
chatting with David on and off all the way up um from Essen and um all the way to kind of gridon and obviously he was
9:41
there at gridon and uh and he said we should get a game and he like yeah absolutely but you know my calendar's
9:46
like it's a it's a nightmare but we managed to carve out an evening and yeah we're just going to play a game online
9:53
um and and then Paul Grogan says oh I fantasy streaming it on on gaming rules
9:58
for for The Patriot and I was like Paul I've not got a studio you know what I mean like we're in the living room like
10:04
sorry we're in the dining room where we are now there's no overhead camera there's no rigging or anything it's like
10:10
so I've had to kind of fashion um something up which basically ended up being three games stacked on the edge of
10:17
the table Bal what games were they they were cloudspire the Miniatures from cloudspire because they're heavy and
10:22
sturdy games and then Feast Roden I think was at top cuz got bit it's got a bit height yeah yeah so you know ends up
10:28
being quite High without it being really mad I then used a tripod but as a boom
10:33
arm because the tripod is a phone tripod thing and it didn't quite work for what I needed it so I used it as a boom on to
10:40
go over the the table and put a um a webcam basically attached on the end but
10:46
how did you balance this monos well I think this thing's tipping over and I couldn't get it in the right position
10:52
and I said I need some weight I need something to to balance or drape over the the back like like a sandbag or
10:59
something what have I got so I went into the kitchen and I saw a SP like a bunch of bananas and I thought that's it
11:05
they're going to work and I had four bananas on this Bunch yeah and it was the perfect weight it
11:12
was honestly the perfect Three Bananas would have been too light five would have been too heavy it was just four bananas was the exact weight I needed in
11:19
the right position and it was awesome now listeners if you do support us on coffee that's why then we can upgrade to
11:26
a studio I can get rid of the banan a dream but the bananas might stick around the Stak yeah so and it's also a
11:34
reminder of why we do Audio Only and not do video cuz we just not set up for
11:39
doing it at all and yeah and this this room that we're in is it's quite bad on
11:44
on the light and stuff like anyway so I managed to get this rigging we got it all sorted and and then yeah we had a
11:50
game um so I played CA it was a Romulan and I've been wanting to play that deck
11:55
um for a while cuz she's a nasty [ __ ] she's a proper nasty [ __ ] and she's got
12:00
probably one of the most uh powerful ships in the game which is uh just an awesome thing but you got to kind of get
12:07
through the deck to get at it and get that development so that was a lot of fun and uh David was playing Koloff so
12:13
he's clling on so we have Romulan versus Klingon so it's proper like twatty you know like I'm going to steal this from
12:19
you I'm going to do this from you I'm going to take that so it was good fun but no we uh play it was a late night CU
12:25
David's like I need to start at 900 p.m. and I was like okay oh that's late yeah and it's because he's got a young kid
12:32
and you know he's got daddy duties and things like that which is all cool he living in London still he living in
12:38
London no he's in um Netherlands I think somewhere don't know where he did live in London for a bit I think he did yeah
12:44
uh so yeah so that's uh we did that a game and it was good fun so that was that was my evening that was literally a
12:49
couple of days ago yeah fun nice nice nice loved it Adrian yes what have you
Adrian - Primal: The Awakening (Sleeving)
12:56
been um you been playing have you been doing I haven't again I've played games you've talked about before so I thought there's no
13:02
point regurgitating that so I've done a couple of board game adjacent things so the first thing I did was UNS sleeve
13:08
Primal what and then resleeve it oh okay so I thought you were selling it then I
13:15
I'll get my wallet the look on Rob's face then was give me give me give me shut up take my money so basically when
13:21
I bought Primal I didn't buy the sleeve packs I never bothered to normally but in Primal there's a few card sizes that
13:28
are just slightly weird and so when I got it I realized that I couldn't easily sleeve certainly the square cards cuz
13:34
they're just not right um and then Paul Grogan managed to get me um the box that
13:40
you can put all the sleeve cards in and the dividers and the official sleeves that they've done but at this point I'd
13:46
already sleeved half the cards that I could with Mayday CU I always go with Mayday sleeves and I was like what do I
13:54
do like I've now got a load of sleeves that don't match the other ones got in
13:59
case I ever need to mix a match and all that lot so I just decided to sit there while I was watching various TV shows and slowly UNS sleeve like a thousand
14:08
cards just imagine you sat there I'm un sleeving while watching beaf um what did I watch recently sealed
14:16
sealed team the one with the boras in it the guy from boat yeah yeah what Angel
14:21
as most yeah yeah so yeah so I was watching that and then UNS sleeving and then um yeah when that when I finished
14:28
all of that I then picked it all up again and resleeved it all so it took me like two weeks but interesting thought
14:35
process that do you know what before I turn 40 that would have sounded horrendous now that sounds like a lovely
14:41
way to spend an evening it was one of those things where I was like watching TV and didn't want to do something to distract from the TV so I was like well
14:47
sleeping doesn't really a rep just a repetitive task so yeah so that was that was kind of a few evenings of a week two
14:54
weeks and then the other bit that I was kind of insinuating earlier is that we've got um got the New Year's Eve
15:00
party where always have a few friends around to play board games and this year the mix is quite interesting because
15:06
normally we have either just all party sort of Gamers or we have sort of mid to
15:12
heavyweight Euro Gamers or midweight Euro Gamers probably more this year I've got someone who's really never properly
15:19
played board games they've done RPGs and tcgs and stuff like that and then I've got someone who's getting into splots oh
15:27
wow so and like really enjoying so they're like the total opposite ends and
15:33
it's a six player game it's six players so you're like well what have I got in my collection that can start on work for
15:39
six players that's like that diverse so yeah I've got the uh the crypto and just
15:46
one and all that lot of the party stuff and then I was like well Concordia Venus is six player and teams so we can put
15:53
the person who's not so good with board games with someone on a team same with viticulture Co-op yeah is we can kind of
15:59
coach them through that that's up to six players I don't know what it'll play like at six players but we got kind of some of that and then just yeah just a
16:04
lot of sort of mid weish sort of mid to lightweight euros and heat and things
16:09
like that in there so but it was quite an interesting sort of thought process of how do you start and build a little
16:16
library to take with you knowing that I'll be supplying most of the games cuz
16:21
friends don't have a lot of friends don't have games that do six players or if they are they're Twilight Imperium and gain Thrones the night hinges on
16:28
your selection so I was like oh what do I do so yeah quite interesting just going through and working out how do you
16:35
how do you put a list together that's got some party games and in will also cater for some sort of at least
16:40
midweight Euros without completely throwing off the person who's never played a board game before so yeah so I
16:47
quite enjoyed actually spending in the evening sort of oh okay yeah put that on the list going through what six player
16:53
what can I get away with kind of thing so yeah so I enjoyed that that was an evening of just kind of putting some
16:58
games together and and figuring out what would work what I could put in a bag
17:03
nice so yeah I think that's my two bits that I've done that's board game adjacent recently MH so yeah cool about
Dan - Baldur's Gate 3 (Not a board game Dan)
17:09
you Dan mostly the same as Adrian really it's been I've been doing kind of more
17:15
planning what games I'm going to be playing over Christmas and playing a lot of Boulders Gate 3 that's what I've been
17:21
doing so I know that I've got a bit of time available around the Christmas
17:26
period so I'm trying to sort of see who I know is going to be available I've kind sent a few messages around and me
17:33
and and tried to plan it haven't got many days off cuz it's my it's my bread and butter month is December for work so
17:40
I've tried to sort of see what days I've got plan some games around them plan some games around with family as well
17:46
and I'm going away on not holiday but I'm going away going to see my brother the first week of January so I know that
17:51
we definitely board games played that first week um he doesn't play anything too heavy you stick anything in front of
17:58
him that's too too heavy and he says I got MB brain Dan cuz I can't my mother
18:04
just can't either um so I got M brain Dan I can't do it I can't do it it's too much what we playing tokaido no no I'm
18:12
joking um he likes playing tokaido um but anything that's kind of past like brass forget it so anything that's up
18:19
there it's not going to happen but I I will think of a list of games to take that I know that he'll enjoy possibly a
18:24
bit of tapestry maybe a bit of worms fan so you know sticking with my there um
18:30
but uh other than that lots of Boulders Gate 3 it got me back into D and D to be
18:36
honest yeah I've not D anded ever but now I'm considering maybe I should probably partake well JP that's what I
18:42
said JP kind of got interested we're going to do a one shot just a one-off you know Adventure so um I think
18:49
I do a one shot that's because of Boulders game but who's going to DM it me okay for the first time so well I've
18:56
got space maybe I might sign up to manels coming for Christmas and ni thoughts so starter kit or just just
19:02
books that youve seen books and starter kits nice and Essentials kits yeah and dice and screens oh he's gone all in oh
19:08
I've gone I'm way I'm way past like he's gone all in yeah yeah yeah my daughter
19:14
really wants to play okay she's got a character set set up she's going to be a druid so um yeah just waiting on manuals
19:21
and stuff and Stu's going to help me get started so and's been dming for a long time you you yeah yeah I know we're
19:27
running a campaign so did not know that yeah it's been it's been a lot of fun as well like every time I enjoy it so much
19:33
um that um the yeah I I made me want to do it to be honest so you're playing New Edition then not New Edition oh okay no
19:40
2014 5 we're playing so um we started playing just I've got some books if you
19:46
want some books that'd be amazing look at that he's giving them to me for free he didn't say that no didn't
19:53
say that he says he's got some books for sale yeah but I've really enjoyed it and and reading the and stuff and learning a
19:59
lot about the game so it's been good fun nice nice love that should we uh should
20:05
we do the main [Music]
TURN 3 - Main Event: The evolution of board games
20:15
thing okay let's get on to our main event the evolution of board game but more specifically between the years of
20:21
like 200 and 2010 to like now uh so I've
20:26
been board gaming since 2011 a little while little while um board game is
20:31
coming has come a long way since the early days I'm not talking like the early days of Chess or go but um from
20:37
the early 2000s to the 2010s mechanics have changed tastes have adapted and
20:42
board game crits have a real hard time scratching their heads to come up with a game that's truly unique and original
20:47
these days and not just a reskin of that deck builder you love so let's dive in let's do it so first of all I'd like to
Discussion on first board game memories & their mechanics
20:55
discuss our first board game memory not not the board game meory memory where you played Monopoly or Scrabble with
21:00
Aunt Gladis I'm talking about the first ball game that you got into the Hobby and which mechanics did that ball game
21:06
have that really stood out uh and then after that can you think of a game that
21:12
you play or enjoy or have played that shares similar mechanics but has adapted
21:17
to become a more popular or better title for example I'll go first if you like so
21:24
when I first got into the hobby the first board game that I played that properly opened my eyes was the FFG
21:31
title Gears of War now if you want to go and buy that sucker now it's really expensive because it's massively out of
21:37
production um especially the um the print and play expansion kits that did for it as well there was two card packs
21:43
like Game of Thrones second editions got two card packs that you can buy they did that for Gears of War they one pack for Gears of War and to buy that now it's
21:49
really expensive cuz they they don't make it anymore um but that was the first game that I kind of played and got
21:56
me into the Hobby and not only did I love Gears of War um but I started playing you know a tabletop you know
22:03
tabletop version of this game thought W this is this is amazing this is blown my blown my head this is um but when you
22:10
compare it to like now the only kind of closest comparison although I don't hate
22:15
this game but I have played it but it didn't scratch any itches anymore but I think that's because of my own tastes is
22:21
Gloom Haven to go where you've gone from with Gears of War to Gloom Haven and think
22:27
about the Journey that the mechanics of that game have have changed and adapted
22:33
the difference between those two titles is colossal you know Gears of War is you
22:39
know it's it's moving on a map mostly you know with action selection and using
22:45
line of sight as you normally do with a game of that that caliber to take on the enemy uh and the enemy is normally
22:51
controlled by the dungeon in some sort of way by key rules while Gloom Haven
22:56
obviously as everyone knows is significantly different with how you choose your actions with the cards and
23:01
how they're split into two different ways um and that is a massive change between those particular types of
23:07
games can anybody think of anything like that where they've played one of their first early games and how far it's
23:14
adapted and changed Adrian I'm looking at your face and it looks like you really got the
23:20
gears turning no I just oh it's just your face just yeah just I was just looking off at the distance um so I
23:28
think previously I've mentioned that my first what I'd call Hobby board game that I ever played was Titan BY avelyn
23:34
Hill years and years and I was way too young to play that game so I really struggled to understand it um the first
23:41
I then think in when I look back at it in the past I think I've said either Battle Star Galactica or pandemic I
23:46
think which were both 2008 games but when I was looking back through some memories I found a game of Pillars of
23:53
the Earth that I think was about 2007 so I think that might have been my first
23:59
first actual board game and Pillars of the Earth was released only a few years after kalus which is quite considered
24:04
the first work placement games and obviously now worker placements are everywhere they're part of a lot of
24:10
games understandably it's quite a solid mechanic unless you're crisp in which case you hate it but he doesn't does he
24:16
yeah really yeah despises workpl he's not the only one what I hate it you
24:21
can't you hate work you're like you're playing anon on Saturday I don't hate it yeah and you love Lord to water d
24:28
I'm I'm slowly going off it but everyone does yeah apart from the cures I I find that there's a massive problem with
24:34
worker placement is that I can't do everything that I want to do and that drives me mad but that's part of the mechanic I know that's why I don't
24:40
that's why I don't particularly love it say that I hate it is strong but I I dislike it but the anacron time travel
24:47
thing makes it interesting for me and I found that we played it a three player
24:52
and there was enough space there was enough space to do what you want to do but yeah he he's not the only one that
24:58
this likes it so I I I I understand what you're saying cuz when I when I first discovered work of placement games it
25:04
was a gria uh and I first played this game and went I love it but I don't get it I
25:11
can't do everything by the time the game is finished I'm like my farm is only half built and it annoyed me for the
25:16
first thought two or three plays and then I went I get it now come on this is
25:21
this is what you're asking me to do this is why it's the way it is cuz you need it needs to be like this to it annoys me
25:28
but but I suppose you could know you could if you really wanted to you can change it and go I'm having three more rounds or whatever but it's but it's
25:35
like I I get it now and and once that Penny dropped for me I I just love worker placement games they're fantastic
25:41
so yeah so it's got worker placement in it Pillars of the Earth um and obviously it was it's a fairly early IP tie in for
25:48
to to the books um and also I think at the time the TV show was out if I remember correctly or whatever it was I
25:53
didn't watch it but I remember people buying it because of the books and that um and it's got I suppose like an
26:00
economic thing of you need different materials to buy people and then those people kind of help you in the future
26:06
rounds and score you more points and kind of three of these cost five but
26:12
four only costs six sort of thing so you're getting that scales of of economy
26:17
which has become much more prevalent I think one of the things that I'm pretty sure it's fairly unique to pill I
26:23
haven't really seen elsewhere as you get two worker guys in in the in the bag and then they'll draw one out and they'll go
26:31
oh that's green if you'd like first place it will cost you 10 coins or like whatever it is well I
26:39
can't afford that okay goes to the back of the first round of things okay
26:45
green you've got you can have first place but it'll now cost you nine coins oh yeah I'll pay nine coins to go first
26:51
and then they get to kind of go first and then you keep drawing out the bag and offering slightly less coins to go
26:57
next and I don't think I've ever seen that Revisited and I do think there is a bit too much luck in it and I think that
27:03
might be why when you look at Euros there's not there's not that repetition of doing that Chiran does it but I feel
27:10
like but a little in the after the very after the first kind of prep preparation
27:16
of the round you do the advertise step yeah don't you so it's not quite as significant as 10 coins as it were but
27:22
imagine in terms of the economy of the game where if you choose to advertise you pay so many amounts of coins to gain
27:28
two victory points or two Fame that's quite a small part of traran I would say whereas whereas this is kind of a big
27:35
part of it is who's going to go first who's going to have the coins and who's going to want to pay to go earlier um
27:41
but you have to wait on being drawn out of the bag first it could be that you get you get you've got all the coins to
27:47
go first but you don't get drawn out of the bag first sort of thing so there is a little bit of luck element there but
27:52
it's one of the few mechanics that's in worker placement games that I've not seen repeated m um that's in one of
27:59
those early ones so yeah so and and work say worker placements are really prevalent now and I think there's a lot
28:04
of things that they did there that have been repeated lots of times and sort of
28:10
refined um even like after the Empire has a bit of a sort of similar worker placement where it's very basic get
28:16
resources and then the puzzle is around just the get resources worker placement style puzzle um but yeah that's that was
28:24
my first game first hobby game I think really yeah H interesting jul hello
28:31
hello yeah this is difficult for me because my gaming hobby was definitely
28:38
as a child playing the usual tropes um but also then dabbling with
28:44
blood bow and and other games probably MB Games in wadington uh back catalog I
28:51
remember that game with the Vampire one was a stamp he took the hat off and then you you you basically put it on your
28:56
hand when you've been bitten oh yeah remember that one yes I remember that yeah remember that one what was that I think it was probably called the vampire
29:02
game something simple like that but yeah I do remember that yeah roll and move and you walk around and then you get bit
29:08
like bang you mentioned roll and move yeah yeah yeah all of that kind of stuff with there's there's one around uh um
29:14
the the great Chinese detective or something which is probably not even allowed to be printed anymore because it
29:21
was so stereotypical awful um so I kind of had those type of games then out of
29:26
Hiatus till about 2015 2016 of when I would say I properly got into the hobby
29:33
so it just depends on what which area do you want 20 so in 2016 what did you play
29:39
XCOM XCOM was your was your baby the game was the first thing that I I got my
29:44
that's an interesting one though it's not a typical one no but it's it's not something that people would go oh that
29:49
was the first game I play you would you wouldn't guess that well I wouldn't guess that no but it's the one that kind of like you know the IP it's the IP
29:56
right play like me then with gear or what yeah I played XCOM original on PC back in the '90s when it was actually
30:03
called Enemy Unknown yep right and XCOM was the obviously the the corporation or
30:08
whatever you're playing and then they rebranded it obviously so as part of that kind of reboot that they did on the
30:14
uh the computer games than the board game I don't know if it was around the same time Xbox 360 was the when it came
30:20
out originally the re and then I think the game the game The Bard game came out a couple of years after that yeah but it
30:27
was definitely before XCOM 2 came out definitely yes definitely before because the expansion added XCOM 2 elements in
30:34
in there so so that was kind of the first little kind of proper dabble into oh God these the board games have
30:40
changed haven't they since the vampire stamp game that's going to bug me now I
30:46
remember that I remember yeah um and obviously it's app driven can't play
30:52
without the app and it's it's fully Co-op and you're playing against the game and it's highly stressful uh for
30:57
those haven't played it it's a completely mental game to play um but at the time it was a blast cuz it's
31:03
something completely different now if I kind of look at what games have overtaken it I mean a
31:12
lot of games have overtaken it in terms of I prefer to play them but it's actually quite still a unique
31:18
proposition for game yeah um I was thinking as you guys were talking it's like well xcom's again which one which
31:25
game is kind of similar I'm like I don't know if there is there isn't many yeah you've you've heard a good one it's it's
31:31
an odd one it's a unique one for sure I mean there's other games that are definitely app driven but they're not
31:37
really the same you can almost go backwards with XCOM couldn't you because you could if you were to go and de
31:44
evolutionize that game you you'd probably go to pandemic yeah and it's probably so XCOM is probably an
31:50
evolution of pandemic more space alert and stuff like that where you had the timer and the the sort of list of items
31:56
you had to do and it was all kind of sped up pressure pressure got this thing get I was thinking more but that's again
32:02
that's that's before that's 2008 2009 I think that the only game that the only
32:07
other game that I've played with that kind of pressure that old [ __ ] element was Captain Sona yeah but of course it's
32:13
not app driven no you're right it's got the similar pressure that tension building taking in information and
32:22
making decisions quickly I think for me that that's probably the only other game that's made me feel
32:28
like I'm really Under Pressure yeah it's the pressure element isn't it you've got like magic Maze and stuff like that that
32:33
are all kind of timered games but again it's kind of it's not got the app bit that's hiding information because the
32:40
the app is hiding the information right that's kind of what it's doing for XCOM whereas previously any kind of time
32:47
pressure was kind of open information yeah so I think there's been lots of iterations since and before but it's
32:53
quite a unique proposition in that real time timered game yeah I I generally can't
33:01
think of one which you know give it it credit kudos to XCOM but yeah game not
33:08
going to be for everyone for sure no no but you've got to you've got to enjoy the IP haven't you I think and especially from your standpoint of going
33:15
I've not played board games since I was a child yeah XCOM I love XCOM let's give this a go but then like where' you go
33:20
from there like it's also weird because it I think one thing that has evolved is
33:26
that board games have got better embodying the game because if you played XCOM you do not feel Under Pressure out
33:33
of timings in XCOM because it's all turn-based strategy and stuff that there's no point where you're like oh my
33:39
gosh I got to move this here and move you're Distributing resources but you got all the time in the world to make your choices yeah it's stretched over a
33:46
longer period of time whereas the game is all about pressure of making decisions in a very quick timer and
33:51
therefore I think that the IP doesn't relate very well like the theme feels there but the actual IP doesn't relate
33:57
well the mechanics the mechanics of it don't and I think that if you think about other computer games that we're
34:03
looking at now I think they feel more like the games that they're representing
34:09
yeah so I think if you want to talk about evolution of game I think that's probably a point where we could say that
34:14
board games have generally evolved to better suit to their IP yeah their mechanics are more thematic in in what's
34:21
actually going on and you're right like my favorite bit of XCOM generally is the computer game is when you're actually on
34:26
the Tactical battle field and you're trying to outmaneuver the aliens and be clever and use all the environment and
34:32
stuff that is not exist well it exists in the game as a very abstracted dice
34:38
rolling and assigning to a card thing yes yeah but it's not yeah quite it's not the same doesn't translate very well
34:45
to it to its video game counterpart I need a symbol match a symbol yeah you're dead but this this is what what you
34:50
touched on there Adrian is about the op tagging on with the game mechanics yeah
34:56
the worst the worst game that comes into my mind is jamanji now jamanji the board
35:02
game is terrible as everyone probably knows but the reason why it's terrible is because when you roll dice you don't
35:08
have a stampede of elephants coming through your lounge and that is the reason why it's bad and that is another that is that is a game that just doesn't
35:15
translate very well even though it's a battle board game it doesn't translate I like that you go BG and going one out of
35:21
10 the elephants weren't real No Ex exactly it but it doesn't it's just it's terrible um so when you yeah when you
35:29
when you look at the evolution of something like that until now then yeah I suppose IPS do they are better and
35:35
again you have to kind of discount all of these I would call them wh Smith's fillers for our non International yeah
35:42
that's just I've stuck an IP on something to sell it and it's not a very good game it's just a generic roll and
35:48
move or something like that if you you have to kind of discount all of that we're talking about well considered
35:53
games which XCOM is a well-considered game generally and well built but it just does does not fit the IP they've
35:59
stuck with um Horizon isn't a very good one oh I'm not saying there's not very
36:06
that's one that didn't translate very well but then there are other ones that like saw didn't translate very well yeah
36:11
which you know like again same reason as jangi no one's going to SL your leg off you know and that's threat not faing
36:18
exactly no's going to do that so it's not going to it's not going to feel the same thank God yeah of course of course
36:23
just bring it out for the family look what I've bought be trap and everything
36:29
and the little doll walk comes in on the little trike and goes hello I want to play a game I've never seen saw what I'm
36:37
a massive fan of saw I don't like horror I don't I've watched like 20 minutes of it and that was about horror though
36:44
exact if you take the gore away from it the actual narrative and the um the story is fantastic it's actually really
36:50
good it's really good sure is not we'll watch it together Rob oh not for me it's
36:55
part of the mandated induction call I'd like to sign up to this induction as
37:00
well please just to see your face um cool Rob so I've been thinking about
37:07
this and the the the massive Journey that I've been on which you you'll get that joke in a minute um so for me it
37:14
was heroquest I was waiting for someone to mention heroquest blew my mind as a kid because I know Adrian's a little bit
37:22
of his sold just you know the great thing about hero Quest is broads nothing um no but in in in I just looked at the
37:29
release date and it was 1989 yeah that it was released and up until that point
37:34
we'd played Monopoly we played you know Scrabble we' played board games were an
37:41
intellectual thing almost how old were you in 1989 I was five
37:48
no six six when were you born Rob I was six so you say before that you played
37:55
Monopoly I hadn't played Monopoly at six years because it was a family thing that you did at Christmas so even though I wasn't
38:02
particularly playing it I knew what it was and I knew you know on on Trivial Pursuit for example I'd be on a team
38:08
yeah fair enough you know what I mean like I played games without playing games so they were they were a chance to
38:13
test your intellect or your and things like that you know I I was thinking at 6 years old I was playing the highway code
38:19
to the board game just roll basically Snakes and
38:24
Ladders but you've always liked a dry Game Haven you it's just it's whatever was bought for me as a kid sort of thing
38:30
but anyway sorry go on so hero Quest and you and you actually had characters that were archers that were barbarians that
38:37
were and I think that's kind of what led me into the whole RPG you know the
38:43
narrative element of board games and video games so after heroquest we had
38:48
space Crusade now that got me into Warhammer that got me into Minis that got me into yeah all that you know all
38:55
that stuff we played it completely wrong I've I've talked about this story before you know I had it for years and found out the dreadn was on my side I was like
39:01
holy [ __ ] we I thought it was like an ed 209 thing you know I thought that was the final
39:07
boss so um so yeah it kind of led me into that and then of course video games
39:12
PlayStation exploded you know I'd always played video games um so it kind of went
39:17
into the the story driven Narrative of of video games of games like Resident
39:23
Evil Final Fantasy and and things like that and then to come back full
39:29
circle I I think it's kind of gone hand inand with the development levels of
39:34
these items like video games now a triple it's very rare to get a triple A
39:40
rated video game that's any good or finished so I mean like the production
39:45
quality on a lot of video games now is very poor because they're either going to be finished or they're hidden behind
39:51
a pay wall where you've got you know buy three or four dlc's for the game to be very good the the mechanics the the the
39:59
the structure of of the video game industry and how it um makes a quality
40:04
product is not the same as it used to be so now you have they have to borrow the
40:10
money to make the game make the game it sucks but it sells loads of copies if it's got a strong IP and they use that
40:16
money then to fix the problem my point is like you know the Dungeon Crawlers that we get now even though there still
40:21
dungeon callers that you know you've got your Gloom Haven that you spoke about you've got your descent but you've got
40:27
bagger dungeon which puts a very different kind of spin on it because you're using AP you've got Glo M kill
40:33
for again the slightly different the way that the your health is your action point so you want to stay you don't want
40:40
to get hurt because it means you can do less things so it's kind of balancing so it's not all battle either it's it's
40:45
kind of like a little bit tactic so for me the the genre has changed massively even though it is still get through a
40:52
dungeon and for the for the who turn is anyway bingo card that's for me why too many bones is my favorite game because
40:58
it is a dungeon coer RPG like great never heard of it no I no no I've never
41:06
heard of I've not played it yet and when when Elder Scrolls arrives which should be January nobody's going to see me for
41:12
about three months you just going to solo it well I will and run two campaigns as well because people have
41:17
said can I play it nice okay right second points move on so board games as
The games that change through the years with new editions and expansions
41:24
single entities can start as one game and one it adapts and changes over the years its finished product can be
41:30
something entirely different a gang can have multiple additions over the years to become more polished and changed so
41:36
much that there's nothing like its early Incarnation for example Dominion came out in 2008 with his with its last
41:43
expansion coming out in 2017 Adrien are you sure uh I am now that
41:48
we've now fact checked this uh or Twilight Imperium came out in 1997 while
41:54
the latest edition uh came out in 2017 20 years years later which game can you recall playing when it first came out
42:00
but over the years has changed so much either with expansions or addition changes making it a different experience
42:08
alog together now I mean I mentioned Twilight Imperium there if you look at Twilight
42:15
Imperium 1 versus Twilight Imperium 4 it's not the same game I mean the the
42:20
basic cor mechanics are there there are tiles there are space units and you're attacking other people with them and and
42:26
it's a space oper in a box I just love the artwork on the first edition have you seen it the space lion it's like oh
42:32
my God what's happened to the space they've been in a car accident even even between three and four there's there's
42:39
there's not only graphical difference but there are there are just streamline rule set quality of life difference
42:44
quality of yeah quality of life and it's definitely changed so much for the better I feel um I I find though that
42:50
when I played Twilight Imperium 4 first versus Twilight Imperium 3 in its last
42:57
State before it got updated that Twilight Imperium 4 was missing parts
43:02
yes knowing that they're obviously going to make an expansion just and just make a cash machine out of it which also can
43:07
be can be a downside to to changing additions so anybody else have any ideas
43:14
maybe I should have run us before you before the episode started yeah I I know all the games that have had reiterations but I don't think I've ever played both
43:20
versions of it so like Battle Star Galactica had unfathomable but I've never played unfathomable because GSG is
43:26
the superior skin on that game as far as I'm concerned I actually didn't like Battle Star I think it was a poor teach
43:32
I don't know mechanically if it's what how much better it is um I've I've played both and you've played both as
43:38
well right yeah um it adds a lot of elements and it all allows you to do
43:45
more things yeah um which is what I've heard but no one's ever gone you know what it's that much better no I I think
43:52
they're different games I I think they feel like different games in in in element I don't at all I mean the
44:00
thematically yes um but it's the same experience yeah yeah you're getting the same experience but I I kind of agree
44:06
with Adrien which is uh first but also um is I just I feel more connected to
44:14
the IP of Battle Star and I think the game's mechanics work with the theme
44:19
yeah going back to our XCOM example BSG just sings because it works with
44:25
everything makes sense knowing what know about I don't I've never watched BSG but I know I know about it and I know that
44:31
the theme seriously carries over with that game it does massively yeah so i'
44:36
I've not played unfathomable but I know I want to play it but I'm also without going into it I'm like how will it work
44:43
I'm not sure how this would work and how those mechanics in BSC would work and carry across yeah I think I think
44:49
mechanically unfathomable probably edges BSG it tight
44:55
IT tightens up a few things % it but I still would rather play BSG funny though
45:01
weird is it that is weird but also it's it has a very special place in our yeah is it is it the Nostalgia is it the
45:07
Nostalgia that's kind of outweighing it not for the same reason as you guys but yeah it's one of my early games that I
45:12
played literally as it was coming out so it holds a bit of a place of memory and I I think I was the syon like four times
45:19
in a row in our first four games so everyone just assumes in my in that gaming group I'm the syon so yeah
45:25
there's like a special place in it but yeah everyone knows my feelings on Mr wibbles I don't think I've heard them
45:30
recently actually so um I don't like culu so why would I play unfathomable um ghost stories was turned into last
45:37
Bastion ghost stories is tough to get to the table anyway I don't know how much
45:42
and that had a real nice interesting theme with all these sort of Asian ghosts and monks fighting them and then
45:47
last Bastion was here's elves and dwarves fighting Orcs And I just didn't feel the need to replay it Dominion kind
45:55
of moves along as the expansions go on the the expansions add stuff and you can
46:01
tell as the years go on that they've refined stuff mhm but that's about it
46:08
and every game I was like oh that reimplements this I was like but I've not played the original or whatever I
46:14
might know some of the I might know some of the changes they've made in the reimplements but I've not played one or
46:20
the other to to concisely say that has changed you find that with I've got uh
46:26
Sky mindes which is a reimplementation of mbasa which has a problematic
46:32
thematic attached to it call into lots of people again I've not played it I'm not played Mombasa no I think
46:38
mechanically it's the same um except you know rather than having kind of colonialism in in Africa you've got
46:45
basically stripping resources from the Moon you know so it's completely different and and all that kind of stuff
46:51
going on but yeah I can't really call the the only one the only example I've got is the ti because I had TI three
46:57
Twilight Imperium 3 for not very long and then upgraded it to four cuz they announced it yeah and I was like well
47:04
not like you cuz I didn't have the expansions for yeah I had ti3 for a while and the expansion I had everything
47:09
you could fit you could fit it in all that box really long wasn't it massive no insert it was just like just throw it
47:15
just throw it in it it did come with it did come with a a cardboard top like all fgs had come with that car but yeah uh
47:22
which which as soon as you get the expansions well that's going out stay on target and then even then when you had
47:28
everything all in the Box it was it was a squeeze to get it all in the box and the box is massive but I play Game of
47:34
Thrones second edition first um that was kind of that was one of the earlier games that I played like with you in
47:41
your gaming group CU Game of Thrones was a big one for you guys yeah it was for for my gaming group as well uh and then
47:47
after that I had I had okay my it has been scratched with Game of Thrones I like Game of Thrones cuz I've watching
47:53
the TV series but I want something like Game of Thrones that I can play with my game gaming group what can I find oh
47:58
what's this ti3 so almost although they're not the same game it almost ti3
48:05
almost re reimplemented what Game of Thrones did for us yeah and that became the next bigger thing because it was
48:11
longer because it was bigger because it was more meaty and more girthy so that was what we that's we
48:18
moved on from Game of Thrones to to TI and that's what that was the game that that reimplemented it yeah struggling
Games which oust other games
48:24
with this one yeah there's if we're going down that vein there's games that sort of Ed previous games where you're
48:31
like well this is a superior version of that type of game I'll OU it but they're
48:36
not direct correlations nor they're not like so I'm thinking like like replaced it for you but not for everyone I'm
48:42
think like Earth for instance might replace terraforming Mars or Aries Expedition or one of those sorry sorry a
48:48
little throw up in my mouth there I thought curly walked in because I would I would defend it for him you can't
48:54
replace you can't replace TTM with Earth yeah you can it's quicker it's easier to
48:59
teach just couldn't do it it we have our first fight on I couldn't do it I couldn't do it so but I'm say like that
49:05
they're those kind of things where it's like okay well I might replace um quadropolis with Suburbia or vice versa
49:13
where they're they're both citybuilding games with different kind of stuff and so there's those kind of slightly like
49:20
it fills the same Gap in my collection but I wouldn't say they're a Natural Evolution from one to the other no
49:26
they're just move moving they're just using similar mechanisms or similar
49:31
um IPS or sort of down to taste yeah so I think I found a couple of them came
49:38
out in quick succession so they didn't supersede each other yeah but they were different options to the same thing like
49:45
you've got brass and you've got nucleum I know you I know you do you not
49:50
like nucleum I hate nucleum you do you like brass either I love brass so I I like both I I've got I've got all three
49:56
on my sh typically some one will some will always like one the other course I
50:01
both so youve got June Imperium and lost runin of arac that scratch a very similar yeah I think they're cursed in
50:09
similar ways to other games where they get compared because they came out in the same year Yes But whichever way
50:14
round you did it they could supersede each other if there had been a couple of years apart in those two games you'd say
50:20
that one has superseded the other yeah but because they came out very close together they're obviously it's like for
50:26
me Marvel United totally replaced um Power Rangers grid thingy whatever it
50:31
was called you played that Power Rangers game yeah did you like it it's fine yeah yeah I probably Marvel United was better
50:38
Fair um yeah power angers of the Grid or whatever it was called yeah was far too
50:44
basic with a bit too much kind of oh I want to go first with my cards but you want to do yours which one are we going
50:49
to do that kind of thing whereas Marvel United was much cleaner in producing a similar where defeating bad guys from a
50:56
like a a circular sort of a rondle that we can move around almost and I'm playing cards from my deck so it's a
51:02
much cleaner version that's replaced it but I wouldn't say one's a Natural Evolution from one to the other I'd say
51:08
they fit a similar mold and were're designed by by S I would say it's purely down to taste then it's one well you
51:14
prefer one and than the other you can include games that are that were a base
51:19
game and then with expansions you as it's evolved into what it becomes now you wouldn't
51:25
touch the base you'd only touch the finished product I go tapestry I know you hate tapestry Adrian but I would not
51:32
play tapestry bass anymore I refuse I cannot play it anymore um there was an article I mentioned this on a podcast
51:38
previously um going back along that someone put a post about Stow games and I'm not going to hear bash Stone my
51:43
games of course because I've got a lot of them on my shelf and I love tapestry but someone said that the tracks play
51:49
tapestry uh not the player and I think that is the case with tapestry as a base
51:55
product I think with more cves in there and the additional track and with more
52:00
stuff that it's less like that and I prefer to play the game in its finished
52:05
product with all the expansions added than bass can't play bass anymore and I don't want to hear anything else said
52:12
about it that's how it sounded yeah shut up and move on because
52:18
adri is there like full stop I think most games are often better off with the expansion some are harder to teach with
52:23
the expansion and therefore you just do the base game only but and I'm really struggling I was I was
52:28
going to make a point of there's quite a few times when second editions roll in
52:33
kind of the M like and strangely actually may maybe Stone my games is the
52:39
version of this where vulture they rolled in the expansion some of the expansion stuff and put it into the
52:44
essal Edition essential Edition but there are other they take they take half of it and give you the better well the
52:51
in very comments the better half yeah and I've I've got feelings in my head that there are other games where the
52:56
Edition has done that they've taken bits from the in fact Twilight Imperium Eclipse has from my understanding they
53:03
took all these things from the expansions and then kind of oh here's your second or essential Edition or whatever have have this with all the the
53:09
sort of the good extras that came from the expansion and I think that's quite a common way of of evolving things is just
53:16
taking what was good from the expansion put it in the base game and then produce a new expansion that adds more and again
53:23
from the second edition like here's the second edition expansion so I've got the expansion I've got third edition plus
53:29
expansion and now you've just Rel released then now you've bundled that up and called it fourth edition and now
53:34
You' just released another expansion sort of thing which is for some people and not for others I think with stuff
53:40
like that vulture is the one that comes to my mind first and the fact that the very first edition of vulture came out
53:45
with not the Grande worker is absolutely insane when you think about it it's like
53:51
there's no granding work over there there's always been there how could you like if you wanted a vanilla game of
53:56
culture and you play the F the first game is so vanilla it's so so just me as
54:02
soon as you have the Grande worker in it it gets a lot more interesting um but yeah completely and how many times have
54:07
they re-released fitculture and and it's just I've lost count see my experiences of of of second editions have been where
54:14
they've made the game more accessible so you think you've got Mansions of Madness second edition descent second edition
54:21
that have almost removed the need for a bad guy because it's controlled by an app you played Man's first edition we
54:28
did yeah we did didn't we and that was the first time Tambo we got Tambo to play a game it was the first ever time
54:33
and JP just picked on him relentlessly like a school bully at lunchtime thanks come again I I prefer first edition I'm
54:41
not going to lie yeah 100% well because you don't like the app or I just think I like I've gone full circle with it
54:47
because the app is great for for the game and Longevity adds longevity to the game 100% I like being the bad guy so it
54:55
removes the fact that you can be the dick did I've only ever played second edition did first edition have the card
55:01
that says you're not allowed to talk to anyone I'm sure it did
55:06
it prefer first edition cuz that card is ridiculous anyway I don't know but
55:13
possibly but it's also made it that you can play it solo yeah you know what I mean it's made it more accessible in
55:18
that regard that you don't need somebody to be a bad guy yeah to the point where I mentioned we were talking about games
55:24
were me the other day and sort of saying about games that we need to play again and um I you brought up Imperial soul
55:31
and I was like I I kind of want to be the bad guy and he was like I'll do it I'll do it instantly instantly I will
55:37
happily just screw you guys over again and again and again um we were talking
55:42
because we were talking about Campaign games weren we and it kind of led into that but um but yeah that man and descent second edition um I know I talk
55:49
about it a lot and and obviously leading to the new you mean third it's not actually second edition it's Third
55:54
Edition if you want about the legends of the do no no no the second edition the second oh the actual second edition yeah
56:00
cuz um the second edition you've got an app so yeah you're right the Third Edition is run by an app you can't play
56:05
it without the app the second edition you've got the option right for someone to be a bad guy and for somebody cuz
56:12
obviously you did it with us and the kids didn't you yeah and then um you can play it on your own so so for me like
56:17
second editions have added kind of elements that have made the game more easier to get to the table and and
56:25
extend the longevity of a game yeah the only thing I'll just quickly add around expansions and games like for me Feast
56:33
for Odin with the Norwegians expansion completely completely patches the game
56:38
and you would never play it without that ever I don't own Norwegians I know I
56:45
want to own Norwegians I had one opportunity to buy Norwegians on the Shelf but financially I couldn't at the
56:51
time I saw I went I was in Bristol I was an Excel comics and it was one on the shelf and and it was 40 quid I'm like I
56:58
can't do this I can't do it right now so I didn't and I've not had an opportunity to get it again although someone had it
57:03
on the bringing B at the Marathon this year or year before I can't remember but it was not the English version a can't like you just you're
57:11
teasing with the tip yeah so I couldn't but that that's more expansions that kind of patch a game what changes it
57:19
well it changes the complete the board the worker placement board is different I want to say it's dramatically different but it's changed and um it's
57:27
more modular per Play Count okay whereas the other one is like well you play this Cipher that Play account or you flip it
57:32
over and that's it whereas this is in three sections so it will change the board spaces like most U are yeah and
57:39
adds adds a fifth column as well which is you need less Vikings but when you go
57:44
there it's really powerful but that's the last thing you do on your round which is actually a small thing but it's
57:50
actually really good cuz it's like I really need that thing if I go there now I can't do anything else this round so
57:55
yeah becomes a little kind of race but you don't want to get there too quick and you're hoping other people don't so
58:02
yeah and it does loads of other bits Bobs and stuff in there and add some asymmetry and stuff but uh yeah all
58:08
goodness it's all good I've thought of one actually that I've played which is Imperial settlers and 51st state
58:14
Ultimate Edition so I've only played Imperial settlers yeah and it not great
58:20
it's when it again my tastes have changed over the years and when I played it I went this is okay okay I think 51st
58:28
state is better yeah even just the just the master set not the newest Master set I've got the ultimate got the ultimate
58:34
one yeah but I've got the one before it right uh and I've not played it for years but I refuse to get rid of it
58:40
because I know it's good yeah I much enjoyed it over I remember asking people and people are going oh well you know
58:45
there's a bit more to Imperial settlers and there is they're right or there was I think now 51st States now overtaken it
58:53
with expansions but there is more to 5 to Imperial settlers but what there is
58:59
is not as fun as 51st state in my opinion and the bit I'm really itching
59:04
to try is the co-op that they've made for 51st state didn't know that was Co-op um yeah Moc I think it's called
59:12
it's just basically I Robot from what I can make out where everyone's like there's lots of robots now taken over
59:18
and your your gangs fighting against the robots sort of thing okay um but yeah that was definitely an evolution and by
59:25
all accounts the origin 51st state not the master set was the precursor to Imperial setts and he's kind of evolved
59:31
each step um but yeah that was definitely step yes ignasi IGN IGN um
59:38
and that was definitely a step forward but also a step away from being mean to
59:43
each other yeah yeah want to play Imperium because I think that would be quite a good step up from Imperial
59:49
settlers for me and I'm I impal settlers i' just I've just played it to death oh okay I played a lot uh with the w B yeah
59:57
it's okay now you know I I prefer 51st dat okay so which game that you know of
Which game you've played prior to 2010 is desperate for a change
1:00:02
and played in the 2000s or up to 2010 can you remember um playing that is
1:00:09
desperate for some change carcasson as you know came out in 2000 I know right it's nuts um they did come out with many
1:00:16
expansions and many different versions um there over the last 25 years but which game do you think is desperate for
1:00:21
the same treatment um and which modern mechanics do you think it should in
1:00:27
incorporate I've got one do it I've got one do it it's for me Ora labora oh good
1:00:35
shout 2010 I think it's first edition 2011 I think revised
1:00:40
better I I love Ora laor I think it's a great game they it just doesn't have you
1:00:47
get in the the Box you get two um well you don't really get two decks you get
1:00:52
the front and the reverse side Ireland and France right and it's just right for
1:00:58
adding more um countries in yeah for more variety because in the game of oral
1:01:04
abora it doesn't change like the the cards are the same what what you the
1:01:09
buildings that will come out in each ER are the same obviously what you buy and when you buy them what your opponent
1:01:15
buys will differ your game and stuff like that but ultimately the state of that game is the same from from um A to
1:01:22
B so it's just ripe for like just do another like four country's worth of buildings and now just add a little bit
1:01:29
more they never expanded did they never did no never did but I love it I think it's a cracking little game um and
1:01:36
little Tableau Builder the way the resource Wheel Works you know as a U game it's quite unique in in how that
1:01:43
kind of handles and it's all shared resources and fantastic game I I absolutely would play it any time we
1:01:49
love you U but just ripe for for a bit of love and I just don't think it gets
1:01:55
the love compared to its bigger bigger brothers and cousins and sisters of agulara and Cera and great shout and all
1:02:01
of those so yeah i' say also the half yeah play thatav is is like an
1:02:07
underrated Masterpiece as as a new it's so it is so good I had a copy I sold it
1:02:12
I felt dumb is it like his second highest rated game yep that can't be underrated then it's I think it doesn't
1:02:20
get not I don't think many people talk about it I think I think Tom vassel talked about it so much that everyone
1:02:26
else stopped after a while cuz it's his like it was his favorite game for like seven years on the road it was like okay
1:02:32
the Harvard is going to be one or two on his list and he's going to talk about it for a fair chunk as soon as he as soon as he wouldn't stop talking about Cosmic
1:02:39
Encounter I I switched off um you know and Cosmic Encounter is not a good game we love you to um it's just not a good
1:02:45
game um but I think I think that people who know about it know how awesome it is
1:02:51
but not I but I still don't think it gets talked about enough uh I don't think but laav is also another game that
1:02:58
needs I think it needs either a redo or a revision or or something to to make it
1:03:03
more alive but it is a masterpiece of what it is okay I need to try it it is good yeah I'd be tempted to buy again I
1:03:09
know that the wife to buy play it so lastly everybody can you think of a mechanic that was used in the 2000s or
Mechanics that was used in the 2010s that has died out
1:03:17
2010s that seems to have died out and what do you think developers don't seem
1:03:24
to touch on anymore now you could use roll and move I think roll and move
1:03:29
probably has died out before that yeah unless you go Talisman Road last attempt
1:03:36
yeah but do you think is there any mechanics out there that came out in the in your early days of board gameing that
1:03:42
you don't really tend to see anymore I think for
1:03:49
me I've kind of noticed it the other way around so as I said I I joined the hobby
1:03:54
properly around 2016 so you know this is the the era of terraforming Mars being
1:04:00
released I think so board games were quite heightened and and they're going for a
1:04:07
Resurgence that's what I kind of felt so and then when I ended up playing some older games I've noticed certain things
1:04:15
like this is a different and for me it's the I'm going to call it fiddlin right
1:04:21
yeah right an example of this is Civ 2010 board game right really like
1:04:27
Civilization it's a great game but it's fiddly and it's like how many tokens do
1:04:33
you want Little tokens and more tokens with the tokens and it's just honestly setting that up and the even the wheel
1:04:40
on each of the player boards is is going everything is just a bit of a faf you know and I think what what's happened in
1:04:47
more modern games is the the way the games are are stored the way the
1:04:54
components are are kind of pulled together they've done a they've gone down that road of thinking more about
1:05:00
how you table that game and how you put it away not everyone I'm not saying know we know there are many before the days
1:05:06
of Joel Leia yeah yeah but it's just yeah going back to an older game go
1:05:12
let's play this it's like oh Jesus Christ and then you get the the player Aid and it's like right step one of
1:05:17
75 right 1.1 we got to do this 1.2 we got to do this 1.3 we got to do this
1:05:22
what game are you playing Europa universalis just oh no still s and uh yeah there's just lots of bits that
1:05:29
you've kind of procedurally got to go through and I think the efficiency and um the accessibility and usability has
1:05:35
just dramatically even in 5 years six years has changed there's so much
1:05:41
tightening up that's gone on things like rubber banding to catch up mechanics all that lot of has got better it was always
1:05:47
there at the early 2000s but it's kind of got better I think the the two things for me that stand out as having
1:05:52
disappeared one is actual math so the only thing I the only game I can
1:05:59
really think of that says do your multiplications or Divi divisions in modern times is smartphone in which is
1:06:05
actually one of my favorite games but it's not really in the sense of it's like each one of these cubes is worth four I've got six of them that's fine if
1:06:12
I think about power grid or frag M or like frags especially if you've ever
1:06:18
played frag which is basically like Unreal Tournament the board game which sounds great but then it's like this
1:06:23
weapon does 2 six dice worth of damage or 12 dice worth of damage I add all of
1:06:29
those up now divide it by three because they've got this armor on and you're like no no I don't want to do math and
1:06:37
genuinely have suggested it to someone to teach their kid maths because they I was like it's kind of an interactive way
1:06:43
to teach some quite hard Maths for kids of a certain age you know that is pretty
1:06:49
much gone from games you might be like crunching out oh if I do this I can get 16 points and if I can do this I get 12
1:06:55
points sort of thing you can do that level of math but the the idea of what's 26 * 5 / 2 I need to work that out that
1:07:03
is all pretty much gone disappeared from board games and and during the early sort of or I'd say the the the maybe the
1:07:11
2007 2008 was when I felt like that really started to have fallen off um of
1:07:17
that idea of doing that amount of math in games and the other one that still is
1:07:22
around but generally used a lot less is action point Point selection you have
1:07:27
seven actions this action costs you three action points this action costs you two this action costs you one and I
1:07:36
can't think of it but I remember it being feeling quite prevalent in the mid 2000s um and I know of some games that I
1:07:42
haven't played that includes that but I remember having quite a few games like that where they've now been replaced by
1:07:47
I'd say like more balanced worker placement or you go here and get this action sort of thing Fe for is that is
1:07:54
kind of like that isn't it Trum is his action point yeah traran is yeah yeah or
1:07:59
dice placement has replaced some of that you know I've got aided dice that has to go whereas previously certainly like
1:08:07
games that I remember from sort of and again I wasn't playing them then but remember of seeing games from the 1990s
1:08:12
and early 2000s had this you have 12 action points you can spend five to go here or
1:08:20
three to go there and that's all again it's bitty right and it's
1:08:25
but it's a full mechanic of own but it sounds interesting it sounds like if that game was like that there are they
1:08:31
just they I feel like they've gone because people don't want to do the math
1:08:36
get like kind of the oh I spend five three and two and then I'm left with one what do I do with this I've got six
1:08:42
workers they can go out here here and here is much cleaner as a concept yeah it's the action spaces themselves are
1:08:48
balanced in the way Bal you get more of that or whatever or sometimes it might be you have to place two workers to go
1:08:55
here and that's a much simpler than his 12 or 20 action points yeah it's much
1:09:01
much cleaner way of doing it in my opinion and so they're the two things that off the top of my head I think have
1:09:06
disappeared out of that kind of that Euro game section at least when you
1:09:11
mentioned maths it's like that's when I kind of get irritated with playing a board game on a on an app is when they
1:09:18
take away the maths completely away from you okay so that it calculates the score like Scythe for example if you play scy
1:09:25
on the app you will know who's winning before the game of the before the game ends yeah which then that that is one of
1:09:33
the parts that is the Crux of the game is when because you don't know when it's going to end but if you're playing it
1:09:39
with the app you know when it's going to end because you can work up everyone else's scores are and you can work you can work it out much easier than if
1:09:45
you're around the table uh and you can see who's going to win obviously you know when the games end because they place the the the the last star but if
1:09:52
you see on the scoreboard that this person's got so many more coins than you have you know they're going to win if you end it so that's that that that that
1:09:59
that's math completely taken away which I don't like but with Scythe not you
1:10:05
don't there isn't any math in it but if you sat there and calculate what everyone's scores were then you could probably use it to your advantage but no
1:10:11
one's going to do that you see the opposite in terraform Mars and the digital experience kind of weirdly call
1:10:16
back to your last episode Dan but what I do like about that is that it does do that because you try and look at corner
1:10:22
other corner of the table on their Tableau and work out what PPS they got on that card you you ain't got a hope in h no that true you a't got a hope in
1:10:29
hell yeah so actually knowing some of that information cuz the board presence you can work out you can figure that one
1:10:35
out it's right in front of you but over there in the corner no chance no chance and you don't quite know in that game
1:10:41
the balance between what you've got on the board and what you've got in your guards so knowing some of that is quite useful for your own play yeah it depends
1:10:48
on the game I now know that I need to be getting in the way of that player because they're excelling in that kind
1:10:54
of side of the game tucked away in the corner no one sees it yeah I guess with side I don't I don't want to know I
1:10:59
don't want to know who's who's winning because you want to you want to kind of think well you want to you'll see who's obvious there's a bit more mind games
1:11:05
going on in that Lo a little bit not totally but there's a bit more yeah Rob I've
1:11:11
noticed this is going to sound weird but I think and I might be completely wrong
1:11:17
because my knowledge isn't know when there is extensive as you three but the whole purposefully being a dick element
1:11:23
of games is kind of if not gone but like a lot less than it was welcome to 2024
1:11:31
only because the the whole you can still be a dick in a games you can still kind
1:11:36
of you know not not ruin someone's game because nobody wants to ruin a game but that element of a bit of nastiness like
1:11:44
you can block someone's move you can put your you know you can pick up what they wanted but you don't know that they
1:11:52
wanted it you might you might have an inkling that that's what they're going to go for yeah but things like you know
1:11:58
hidden so the being a complete dick like Game of Thrones where that's the main
1:12:03
element of the game is is no longer around as far as I'm aware but also the hidden
1:12:13
dick all got them it's my travel Willie it's my travel willly only comes out
1:12:19
when it's not shy but the but the hidden player the hidden role element of game
1:12:26
I don't they're still around but they're not as prevalent for a stage it was in
1:12:31
this this this could even be a whole topic based on one Pod episode what you've just opened I feel and I I I I
1:12:38
feel that you know the whole a lot more games are not Isom you know not isometric games but they are you're in
1:12:44
your own element they're in their own element and your interaction is the board you mean asymmetric asymmetric
1:12:51
sorry yeah not asymmetric asymmetric that's like like 3D is it yeah that's where you like make cubes out of
1:12:57
triangle something yeah sorry my bad but the the you know it it's more whereas
1:13:03
there aren't a lot of games where the main focus is the board and you're all contesting it it's kind of you're in
1:13:09
your own element at least the games that I've played recently anyway I wouldn't say i' say a lot of the new hotness
1:13:14
probably doesn't have that but like I said I think it's maybe it's a culture change maybe it's maybe it's a thing I don't really know but then I don't think
1:13:20
you have to go too far back to find them no they're readily available you know you got dead of winter Nemesis um uh
1:13:28
you've got um White Chapel there are know um we got like deal with the devil that's not that old they're there but
1:13:34
it's it's a niche it's a niche now in a in a in the market because I don't think it's as widely looked for now that we
1:13:42
kind of expanded Who board games are for by theme and and interactivity and all that kind of stuff I think that those
1:13:50
kind of games those b a bit of a dick games are within a niche and they come out every year a little always a couple
1:13:55
that feel like they come out every year but they're they're kind of Hidden Away in the corner of the Expo Halls because
1:14:01
they're not not as mainstream not as Main Street yeah but I but I feel like when when there is like a hidden
1:14:08
horrible git or that you know the whole point of the game is for everyone to be a horrible git the involvement in the
1:14:15
game feels much higher than this is my board this is your board this is what
1:14:21
you're doing even things cuz it's more interactive CU you have to think about what everyone else is doing around the table yes whereas before you you're
1:14:28
concentrate on what everyone's doing on the board and I think that a lot of the games that I don't enjoy that everybody
1:14:33
else loves is because I can't concentrate on my board and look at everybody else's board and know what's going on whereas when the main focus was
1:14:40
the central board and you just had markers for don't play Fu chain magnet we won't well no you won't but if
1:14:47
Fu chain magnet is the worst for that but that that's my that you know that element of it like I say it seems to be
1:14:53
a lot less it seems to be like this is my world that's your world and we kind of all go to this bit whereas the the
1:15:00
previously the main board was the universe and we're all yeah because I think a lot of the U Mr Adrian's point
1:15:08
but a lot of the the players these days will generally favor a more positive interaction experience than a negative
1:15:15
one but that galvanized our group that that's why we can swear at each other and and that's why we can say horrible
1:15:23
things guess we're the same our group started the same it was Game of Thrones but no that it's fine and and those
1:15:29
first two or three games that we played as a gaming group that we knew that you could you know say horrible things to
1:15:35
each other you could get angry with someone while you were playing the board game but as soon as that game finished you were all laughing about it and
1:15:41
joking about it mostly well yeah mostly I mean Tambo still has a reputation from literally
1:15:47
the second game he ever played nearly eight years ago okay good chats everyone let's uh let's let's get on to the next
1:15:54
thing
TURN 4 - Would you rather...always be able to buy the games you want second hand and not be able to sell, or always sell at the price but never buy them at the price you want
1:16:04
[Music] okay so would you rather folks would you rather here we go two points coming at you right now would you rather a turn
1:16:11
back the hands of time and relive your first gaming memory but you can only play games up to the year 2010 and no
1:16:21
later or would you start gaming from right now and erase all memories of old
1:16:28
games and basically start again let's discuss I don't want to do
1:16:36
either of those things would you rather it's one or the other Rob hello you
1:16:42
first turn back the hands of time and Rel relive your first game in memory you
1:16:49
can only play games from the year 2010 when did Battle Star come out
1:16:55
2008 yeah I'd rather 2008 was a great year by the way I'd rather do that yeah yeah I'd rather do that yeah 2008 was a
1:17:01
great year you look up 2008 and what came out Dominion pandemic Battle Star galatic um came out
1:17:11
2009 first edition first edition second edition is 2012 yeah well I mean still
1:17:17
still I'd rather play all the old games yeah some some of my favorite memories
1:17:24
are playing those older games yeah like to be fair we didn't well I didn't even
1:17:29
start playing until 2017 oh you're a baby I know tell them tell about 2016
1:17:36
2017 what what year did you start 2007 I think before me W so for me that that F
1:17:43
the first time we play Battle Star the first time we play Game of Thrones you know that they
1:17:49
they that was like was really what without those memories I don't play any
1:17:54
games a like genuinely that that's what got me in without I I know it's going to be
1:18:01
slightly different without Arkham Horror like I don't even get to too many bones without the last time you played Arkham
1:18:06
Horror I you know what I can't sell it does anyone own it yeah I've got all of it you got the most recent Edition or
1:18:12
the thirded I've got everything up to path to carosa which is which is actually not a lot now no no but I can't
1:18:19
sell it I'm never going to play that again no but I can't sell it CU it was I loved it it was great you play ELD horr
1:18:26
no I've never played that you know but my my my point is like without those early games I don't get to I don't get
1:18:33
to Elder Scrolls do you know what I mean I I don't get to Skyrim the the board game if you start again you get to
1:18:40
relive all of those memories again because you can go because you can play the old games but you get to recreate those memories it's like how many times
1:18:47
in your existence have you purchased Super Mario Bros this is a
1:18:53
great discussion right how many times have you bought Super Mario Bros but are you the same person every time you've
1:18:58
bought Super Mario no and that's the point that's the difference I've bought it about eight times probably in my life
1:19:04
I've bought I've bought it on NZ I've bought it on SNES I've bought it on emulator I've got it on the little
1:19:09
gaming watch version that came out a few years ago I've bought it on Wii I've bought it on GameCube I've bought it on
1:19:14
so many different formats but it will never relive up to the first game experience when you die from the first
1:19:20
Goomba it will never relive that never never never but if you could but if you reset
1:19:26
the clock and start it all again then it wouldn't have any relevance when you did
1:19:32
now true it wouldn't mean as much to you it wouldn't be as impactful as it is for
1:19:37
you now like me me playing Super Mario Brothers as a kid was like I remember the first time we played Super Mario
1:19:43
Brothers 3 and seeing that shortcut with a whistle yeah that what that blew my
1:19:49
mind yeah I show that to my daughter now and she'd be like what what the hell are you on about yeah like the first time I
1:19:56
heard the drowning music from Sonic yes still gives me like still gives me
1:20:04
anxiety now same and yeah I think if I played it again I'd be like man whatever but when I was a kid it's that bit when
1:20:10
it the Music Stops and you know you got about 2 milliseconds you're like you just just
1:20:15
jump above the surface just enough to get some air is that is that is that is that it's so good it's that Gap in the
1:20:22
music where it just goes dead you then you yes so let me put it this
1:20:31
way if you had if you don't have those memories if you don't play those games are you the same person you are now are
1:20:37
you sat at this table with us surrounded by the same friends that you are with now that mean so much to you I'm not
1:20:42
talking about us he's gone deep he's gone he's gone deep that's my point yeah I think my thinking is kind of similar
1:20:48
in the fact of that I think Nostalgia has a shelf life like you can remember Nostalgia but you can't replay Nostalgia
1:20:56
correct absolutely possibly counter to your point about Super Mario Bros is that I think if I was still playing the
1:21:01
same games from 2010 all that time I'd be bored really bored even I know that
1:21:08
there's hundreds of games that I could still play and I'd still probably get bored and feel a little bit like this is
1:21:14
done now like I'd probably have moved if I was only left with the games from 2010 and before I'd probably have moved on
1:21:21
from the hobby but at the same time to your point like it's what gets you into the hobby is is those early memories and
1:21:27
staying with it and and to some extent trying to chase and recapture some of
1:21:32
those feelings you're like oh man I need to play this new worker placement game because I want to feel like I did when I
1:21:38
played that Pillars of the Earth the first time sort of thing you're trying to chase it and yeah it's got better and all that lot you're trying to chase that
1:21:44
feeling that you had those first few games it's i' I probably will go with that I have to start again and only play
1:21:52
the new games but I think feel like both of those choices are really Hollow experience not to bring the mood down
1:21:59
but I think I think they are genuinely both quite it's like he's done this on purpose yeah I think they're both quite
1:22:04
Hollow experiences in the fact of that I wouldn't have the memories and the
1:22:10
reason that I got into board games but at the same time if I picked the one from before I'd be well out of the hobby
1:22:15
by now I think if I only played games from 2010 and before i' I'd have been done with hobby years ago interesting
1:22:22
I'm with you I'm with you I would rather Purge and just wake up and
1:22:28
go oh but I have to I mean if you're purging you obviously then know that board games are a thing yes to discover
1:22:36
them all right so it's not case of you purge and then you wake up and go I'm going to take a whittling and
1:22:42
Woodcraft Canadian yarn art because that's the latest Trend no you're going to you're going to you're going to
1:22:48
you're you're going to pick your phone up and chances are the first thing you're going to see on there is zatu yeah it's because like why Why is my
1:22:54
feed full of Bor G I just don't understand yeah I'd pick that um option mainly because I get to
1:23:01
discover Bard games again in the Hobby and I don't mean particular ones cuz it might be that this time around or next
1:23:07
time around you actually just go a different path yeah you like actually might might like games you never liked
1:23:13
before for different reasons right cuz we had a similar question a while ago it was similar would you rather which was
1:23:18
would you just sort of flip and blank and forget everything or would you yeah um or you have everything there but
1:23:25
you're not allowed any new games from this point and from this point is a different thing right because I think we've developed that much but from 2010
1:23:31
is tough yeah especially when like at that point I'd only been playing games for three years like you two hadn't been
1:23:37
playing games at all at that point really like so I know I think it adds a slightly different Spin and it kind of
1:23:42
pushes me the other way CU I'd said well I'd rather keep everything and not be able to buy any new games yeah because
1:23:47
you've got a richer history dra I think that's what I said I can't remember now but I remember sort of feeling slightly
1:23:52
different about it than I have this question because of that cut off is that games have developed and evolved let's
1:23:58
Purge and go again I'm with you I don't think I could do games up to 2010 because I'd probably get bored of
1:24:06
them go I'll be longing I'll be longing for I would love to see your face when you open your office door see all those
1:24:12
war games and go what the hell is all this [ __ ] straight on eBay [ __ ] me that's worth like 700 quid ask you ain't
1:24:19
playing anything in there you are selling everything in there and going right thank you very much we're going to the Maldives
1:24:25
babes let's go to the pub I assume I would still know that I enjoy board games that I've got some lingering
1:24:31
memory some Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind that is somewhere in the back of my head yeah that says the The
1:24:38
Urge that says you need to look at board game you've enjoyed this start the trail again somewhere what were you I'll Purge
1:24:45
yeah I want those memories back but I want to relive them so I know if I purge I'll get I'll get them back the first time I played triron I remember I I
1:24:52
remember it I remember it just blown away yeah um I don't want to recapture I
1:24:57
don't want to recapture that having never played it I I want all my memories as they are I think they're too precious
1:25:03
I I I see that I see that point but I I want to I want to relive them but I wouldn't know that I'd be reliving them
1:25:10
that's a tricky one yeah they would be new again they'd be new but yeah the fact that they' be new again I'd be I'd be up for that and I want to I it's like
1:25:17
it's like playing it's like playing a video game for the first time and then playing it and then like playing it again and you go oh it was good the
1:25:23
first time and I I still like it the second time but it's not going to be as good as the first [Music]
TURN 5 - Penultimate Turn: What's Coming Up
1:25:35
time and now we've reached our penultimate turn so what has everyone
1:25:40
got coming up J what about you Christmas
1:25:46
but no let's not talk about Christmas we've got um well I've started the arc
1:25:52
blighted Reach campaign finally um and we've done session one out of three it's
1:25:58
three isn't it yeah and I won't talk about the experiences yet cuz I'm going to save it until I finish and then I'll
1:26:04
talk about it on the Pod so I can kind of give a who you playing with uh what the the people the people the people
1:26:10
yeah Davey Tambo and tambo's nephew oh nice yeah um and I'm looking forward to
1:26:16
playing the next ACT uh Acts 2 and three nice and that's all I saw on it at the
1:26:21
minute yeah so I'm just looking for experience it's it's providing it's very
1:26:26
different first one was good though first one was fun lots of fun different to base 100% different but yeah yeah but
1:26:35
I'm looking forward to just seeing where this this box of Tricks goes and seeing what happens so yeah tune in for later
1:26:42
on what I think nice nice Adrian what you up to I got I've got quite a bit on actually um so I got this the New Year's
1:26:50
thing coming up that will be soon so I'm going to look forward to that and hope that that goes as well with the with all
1:26:55
the different people um and their their sort of gaming genres that they like trying to mash it all together I have
1:27:02
I'm putting Marvel Champions back on the table for the first time in about a year yay yay so looking forward to see if I
1:27:09
still enjoy it if I'm honest cuz I was really falling out of love with it um and I've got
1:27:16
mener um booked in which is the new it's the new game from I can't remember who
1:27:22
it is now but it's a Egyptian afterlife they're sending you off to the afterlife that came out at Essen um and I was
1:27:29
really Keen to try it but we talked about it on Essen was that David was like doesn't matter if you've only got 20 minutes let's sit down and play a
1:27:34
demo and I was like no I can't possibly play a demo with only it's about an hour to be fair but with only an hour not
1:27:39
knowing if I'll finish the demo so I kind of let it slide um and since then I've just had nothing but good things
1:27:45
from people I trust so I've got that booked in as well soon so yeah plenty coming up coming up that I'm looking
1:27:51
forward to nice nice Rob Dog well mine and JP's wife out on
1:27:58
Saturday and he said do you want to come over and I was like yeah all right CU that sounds really
1:28:03
S I got nothing else on and he said want to come over the wife's gone you want to come over Rob but he said the Curly's
1:28:10
got in touch do you want to play a game I was like yeah okay now I gave the guys three options I said should we play
1:28:16
traron should we play Lord of the Rings or should we play an acony and they all decided to go an
1:28:23
acony so we got an acaron coming up on Saturday are you playing it with fractures or Bass JP fractures with
1:28:29
fractures oh yeah always I I need to play with franches again I'll probably
1:28:34
do that next year probably January is that a Teleport bit I've only play blinking a blinking mechanic I want to
1:28:40
play with the other one actually the future in perfect yeah I've not played I've only in I've only chucked in a
1:28:45
couple of the modules from that nothing crazy like the um the mixed up um um
1:28:51
anomalies oh the yeah yeah and um I think some of the new building tiles possibly but you throw them in just
1:28:58
standard why wouldn't you yeah yeah I've I've played it once and to be honest I'm really looking forward to playing you
1:29:03
play did you play it with frers before yes you you taught you taught him balls deep didn't you yeah yeah I I it's not
1:29:09
the best idea I called you mad yeah I really enjoyed it so I I I'm happy to play the game both in both ways play it
1:29:16
bass play it with freshes I want to play it with freshes again though because it's been too long I like it and I'll be 100% honest with you I really like the
1:29:21
models what time you playing um don't know I can't I can't I can't
1:29:27
join you I can't I can't I can't join you I got I got I got work in the evening we'll just send you
1:29:33
pictures go go on then cuz I like to see it's beautiful I'm playing I'm I'm I'm working in the evening so I got no
1:29:38
chance so yeah but I'm really looking forward to that so um so yeah and our wives are out for the evening so it's
1:29:43
it's not like we need to be it's not like we got work the next day it's not like we got any other plans it's it's just going to be chill play an acony and
1:29:50
and enjoy the evening enjoy it so yeah that coming out which is going to be awesome nice well by yourself nice um I
1:29:59
am other than Christmas which I I'm hoping to get a lot of games played I'm trying my hardest um it's it's just more
1:30:06
bold as gate it's just more since since I've I've I've um stepped down from um
1:30:12
Marathon duties I've tried to take as much time as possible to just try and
1:30:17
relax and chill um with the day job obviously b as crazy as it is I like to
1:30:23
just wind and and sometimes just not do anything which sounds really boring have you seen the live action ones that
1:30:30
they've done on stage at like ComicCon and stuff like that of Bal as gate yeah I've seen quite loads of different
1:30:35
videos and different things and I've seen different I've seen some of the original voice actors play D and D which
1:30:40
is quite interesting yeah um which is quite good but um I'm I'm hoping to sort get Christmas done and then again more
1:30:46
game planning to get more things to the table in January because I still got to try Ironwood I still haven't done I've
1:30:51
got it on my shelf I need to try it I want to try it I talked to you JP about buying Black Forest the new UA game I
1:30:57
want to give that a go want to buy and that it get it yeah I might do I might get that and give that give that as a spin plus there's there are other games
1:31:04
on my shelf of of of shame that are desperate to be played including um sand
1:31:09
um you still not played that I've played it once but it wasn't my copy um but I've got my copy in Solo Expo and Sal on
1:31:16
C I still need to try yeah need to try that one let yeah yeah it's there and
1:31:21
daoshi I need to play daoshi yeah I've seen that don't own it but I've seen it it looks quite good um but uh yeah more
1:31:28
games trying to get more games in into the schedule trying this being the optimal word so the other thing I think
1:31:35
generically uh we're looking forward to well at least I am is our Christmas episode which will be the one after this
1:31:42
one literally next week so we're releasing on Christmas day and we doing something slightly different this year
1:31:49
we've got a a special special guest surprise and that's all I'm going to say
1:31:54
it's not it's not my mom is it it might be oh my goodness oh my goodness a it's
1:32:02
my mom yeah so we're going to get together we're going to have a bit of fun like we usually do but it's going to
1:32:08
be something slightly different so is it Adrian's Mom it it might be Adrian oh my goodness it's Adrian's mom yeah it's not
1:32:16
is it no I don't think it's anyone's mom yeah that's a little tease for next week oh you tease you can listen to on
1:32:22
Christmas day or during the holiday such a tease you'll probably be busy Christmas day but it will be released
1:32:27
then I'll listen on Christmas Day put it on in the background while you're cooking Christmas dinner absolutely but wear headphones cuz the language is
1:32:33
going to be so we yeah more likly and with that folks our final turn is wrapping up and
TURN 6 - The Final Turn
1:32:38
victory points are about to be scored thanks to everyone for listening I'm going to hand over the first player
1:32:43
marker to Adrien Adrian is your go now it is it's your go excitement I'm looking forward to your topics guess
1:32:50
who's back back again does that mean you're going to wrap well I'll do the I'll do the thing for
1:32:57
