welcome to whose turn is it Anyway your ball gaming podcast where we put you The Listener right into the middle of our gaming group and I'm joined today by
0:46
some of the usual gang Adrian hello Kerlington III hello and he's just
0:53
finished his run but he can't get enough of it he's back it's crisp hello there hello there and we're going to talk
1:00
about beyond the ball Gamers so we're going to basically talk a bit more about ourselves in this episode which is a bit
1:06
of a departure for us we usually talk about all the games and game related things so more on that later how is
1:12
everyone doing we are all good thank you very much I'll answer for everyone we're all good yeah cuz we're all looking at you
1:18
going this Chris answer yeah yeah we're all Grand thank you it's been ages since I think we've done a main episode let's
1:25
let's put that on record recorded one at least recorded one yeah behind the the the curtain chis we blitzed your run in
1:31
about 2 weeks yeah so then he was like here's your here's your list I'm like okay done there you go bang and then
1:38
hand it over to me and it all fell apart basically and now we're kind of to the wire so so here we are so it has been a
1:45
bit of a a laps time since we recorded which just means we've played lots of games we've been doing lots of things
1:50
and we've got lots of ways to update you is that what it means cuz I feel like I haven't played that many games I've just
1:55
worked a lot and that's why we couldn't fit in half the episodes I was trying to make it more excited but I think you're
2:01
bang on yeah cuz that's definitely part of my problem as well work so yeah so I don't know how many more games I would
2:07
have played than I normally have in the time between episodes It's holiday season as well lots of us have been away
2:13
and done some cool stuff well Lots most of you have been away I haven't I think
2:18
I I listened to the last episode episode 59 in that episode I I was so excited
2:24
that I was going to go to Turkey and it didn't happen yeah I listened to the episode and I was nearly in tears
2:29
laughing it was thanks for that yeah it's it was there's so when I'm doing the post bit some bits I have to Loop to
2:36
get a good yeah bit and part of it was your I'm excited about GRE I didn't mean
2:41
to just picked it up and by the end of it like you're cly I was just in fits of Tears cuz I was just like yeah he
2:47
doesn't know what's to come he doesn't know he sounded so hopeful did he so hopeful but yeah for those that don't
2:52
know I mentioned it on the 24-hour um episode cuz I I I turned up on it and I
2:58
I shouldn't have been at the 24-hour ball game marathon and uh yeah we had a problem with my son's passport as in he
3:04
didn't have enough time on it and therefore found out two days before we meant to fly it's not a good time to
3:10
find out when your passports not in day properly so yeah long story short wasn't
3:15
enough time couldn't get it fast enough and we didn't go on holiday which is a bit [ __ ] not going to lie it it sucked
3:23
but life experience I will point out that both me and Adrien were very supportive at the time I'd like to think
3:30
but it's now in retrospect GLE about it I can laugh about it now yeah at the time was we did
3:37
feel bad for you as a collective group um yeah that sucks yeah but there's
3:42
other cool stuff coming up which we'll talk about later so hopefully that will kind of count to balance it but anyway should we get on with the show let's do
TURN 2 - Let's Talk About Hex
3:49
it let's do it yes
3:57
please so it's that time where we talk about all the games have been hitting our table with let's talk about hex so
4:04
Adrian I'm going to come to you my friend what's been going on nice uh well so I'm going to talk about a game that I played recently but before that I
Adrian - Underwater Cities
4:10
thought I'd talk about I've taken up these conqueror challenges I don't know if you've seen them Facebook and Tik Tok
4:17
B bombarded me with adverts for it and I've be meaning to get a little bit more sort of active and fit and all that lot
4:23
and if I try and tie it to weight loss or anything that I really struggle cuz the second you don't lose weight my motivation goes out the window so I was
4:29
like right I'm going to tie it to something else and these medals came up for challenges and basically it's a very
4:36
expensive way of doing it because I think I've paid 200 something pound for seven medals and they're all related to
4:43
things so I've bought the Harry Potter medal set and every time I walk however long it is they've set you to walk so
4:49
the first medal is 70 Mi so when you walk 70 Mi the app tracks it and then they send you the medal for the first
4:55
book and then I think the second one is like 80 something miles from there and I nearly signed up there's there's a Lord
5:01
of the Rings one anden and a Star Wars one and I've nearly signed up for th for those as well not realizing quite I knew
5:08
it was going to be expensive but I didn't quite realize it's going to be like2 200 for seven medals expensive and I get they ship each one of them out to
5:14
you from America like every time you finish it they ship it straight away it's not like a box that comes to you at
5:20
the end or anything like that so I get there's a lot of shipping costs in that as well but is quite expensive but I thought you know what I'm a Harry Potter
5:27
big Harry Potter fan so I kind of like the look of him anyway I think that'll be fun funky and it will tie in quite nicely to the idea of me doing a walking
5:34
Challenge and trying to stay fit and all that lot so so far I'm 40 miles in to the first challenge in like two weeks
5:41
which is you oh yeah way more way more some days when I'm working from home I
5:46
do 400 steps in a day yeah that's me that's even worse than me I do
5:52
impressive if we work from home it's about 2,000 yeah and I feel bad about that so normally it's a bit higher than
5:59
that but about once a month I'll sleep your desk I'll put in a day well so I've
6:04
I've only got a little house so literally I move from my bed to my desk upstairs and then when my day is done I move downstairs and that is it so
6:11
normally I'm about a th000 steps as you say but some days at home I'm 400 steps so to now be two and a bit weeks in and
6:18
have done 40 miles of walking it's quite good and I'm sure I'll calm down right so by the time I've got to medal four or
6:24
five I'm sure I'll have calmed down a bit but if I can keep going at a decent rate of sort of 10 miles every two weeks
6:30
or something like that I'll get through all the medals in the you have a time frame to do the medals I'll get through all of that and all that lot so I just
6:35
thought I'd mention that cuz it's quite funy we don't really talk about some of that stuff sometimes and it's related to this episode it is a bit more about us
6:42
but you got in early and I like it I got in that yeah exactly um however board game wise I have uh played a board game
6:50
that I actually bought at Essen in 2023 all right I didn't realize you got
6:55
that at that point I know what he's going to talk about say no surprise but yeah so wow um at the delicious games
7:01
Booth which is Vladimir suchi's kind of own company at the time evacuation was
7:07
the big the big deal and it was about I think about 10 15 pound more than underwater cities which is what I'm
7:13
going to talk about and I know that underwater cities has quite Prestige to it and at the time I was like do I get
7:18
evacuation I was going to play it on Paul's Channel at some point anyway I thought which I did um and so yeah so I
7:25
bought underwater cities and it's really good the central sort of premise and
7:32
mechanics are that you'll have a a range of cards in your hand and those cards will do different actions or different
7:38
bonuses or allowed you to trade things or various sort of different bits and pieces and they're colored red orange or
7:45
green and around the board are action spots and you have three actions per
7:50
turn and you put your little um they're like worker placement spot you put your little um sort of active token on it to
7:58
say that it's been taken and no one else can take it MH and if the and you have to play or discard a card and if the
8:04
card you play matches the action Spot Not only do you get the action that's on
8:09
the action spot but you get the card action as well if whatever you get rid of doesn't match the color you get the
8:16
action on the board but not the card yeah and the different I forget which
8:23
way around it is but the different colors have different weightings of some have better cards and some have better
8:28
actions sums a mix of both from a sort of power point of view so I think it's the green one that's quite weak actioned
8:36
but on the cards are all really strong so if you're going to play for green action on the board you really want to play a green card with it whereas the
8:44
other way around who know like that kind of thing you know if you're taking what let's say the orange action I can't remember which colors it is but let's
8:50
say the orange action is the one where the action's really strong sometimes you don't mind throwing that card away kind of thing
8:56
because you're getting a good action off the board and what you're then doing to create
9:01
this is create your little underwater city now anyone who's probably seen the boards probably knows that you get these
9:07
funky little acrylic domes that's all I know about yeah yeah that look like an
9:12
underwater city it looks like those kind of Domes that you'd get in pretty much all sci-fi those underwater sci-fi
9:18
buildings that are like those domes or like what you might see on like a Mars project or whatever that kind of Domes and you place them out and then each
9:25
Dome will have a speciality over whether it creates food uh batteries or
9:31
something else there's three there's green uh White and uh yellow and those
9:37
things during your income step will create other things which allow you then to create and expand your underwater cities and at the end
9:46
specialized cities give you more points than unspecialized cities no sorry
9:52
specialized cities give you less points but they produce a lot more the more of you got of the specialization but then
9:57
there's also um objectives on the board and stuff like that and you've got your own little set of objectives and you can
10:03
buy them as as they come out all of which give you end of game scoring so sometimes what you're trying to do is is
10:08
build up very specialized cities knowing that your end score isn't great from the general scoring but then your objectives will score you loads or sometimes you
10:14
want a little bit of each which means you're not producing much but again you'll probably score a lot more at the
10:20
end and it's a intricate little puzzle that it's not little at all it's an
10:25
intricate puzzle that um that gives you a lot of choices and at the end you're
10:30
boor and what you'll have done will be very different from what your opponents have done but it all sort of sits inside
10:36
that same like infrastructure because your underwater city is your own everyone has their own ones so how
10:43
you've linked up your because you have to build the Dome first then make specializations and you have to link
10:49
them together with tunnels and you can upgrade the domes and the tunnels and the order you choose to do that in is quite important but you have to have the
10:56
actions to do it you have to have the cards to do it I had a great time it's a great puzzle it's not the rule book is
11:02
pretty bad in my opinion it's not the best um although I don't know that there's a great way necessarily to set
11:08
out that rule book but I really struggle with the rule book I think it's got a great amount of puzzle and reward for
11:14
for managing to link it all up and make it all work together and gives you a variety of options of how you're going to achieve it that you don't know at the
11:21
start of the game like you'll see some public objectives and stuff like that so you do know little bits of what you'll go after but quite often what you draw
11:28
in your hand each turn from these action cards will really dictate what you're
11:33
going down and there is some engine building as well you get some bonuses and some actions that there's a action
11:38
slot which is for Action cards and if You' got an action card in your Tableau you then get to do that action instead
11:44
so you can site sort of build a little bit of an engine as well but it's not really an engine builder I don't think
11:49
it's the building is building up these cities to produce stuff that give you what you need to continue to produce
11:56
other types of things so yeah it's really enjoyable I've I'm glad that I've
12:01
played it now because it was one that was on my list for a little while and I bought it on a whim at Essen just because we had a car with space in it so
12:07
I was like let's buy a few yeah let's buy a few more games and and it's taken me a while to get to it but yeah really
12:13
enjoyed it what was the complexity level I would say it's around the four Mark I haven't looked it up on BGG but I would
12:18
say it's it's definitely more complex than say terraforming Mars um but I think it's probably lower than
12:26
Lura um I would say it's kind of around that mind Clash sort of level seems
12:33
interesting yeah I I say the the art design is perhaps a little bit like the
12:38
actual art on the cards is great but the way the board the main board looks is a little bit underwhelming and I think
12:43
what makes up for it is the a the domes are funky and B the the little pellets you have to put down the little lozenges
12:50
to indicate what type of Dome it is M um not well done as well other than that I
12:55
don't think it's got like the biggest table Factor but it it plays really well
13:00
it's got a good pedigree like it's ever since it came out people have been raving about it so I've heard of it and
13:06
I was like I should try that and I know I think terraforming Mars came out before it I believe I think so yeah but
13:12
it wasn't long after and they get linked those two games say and I'm not saying
13:17
they're remotely the same cuz I've not played the other one but they they've got this weird linkage that people kind
13:23
of say oh yeah but if you like Terri M you might like this is that like lost ruins and dune kind of some yeah I don't
13:29
think it's probably that close though possibly again it's that you are
13:34
building up a instead of hexes you're building up these connected domes um and
13:39
then being connected gives you bonuses and um and as I say you're either going to specialize these domes or you're
13:45
going to kind of give a little bit of them so that they're worth more victory points at the end so you're building up this little ecosystem but it's on your
13:51
own board whereas terraforming Mars is on the central board right and you're but there's definitely an escalation to it like terraforming Mars where you kind
13:57
of by the end producing so much power and so much heat and all that kind of stuff and it feels um it's a lot tighter
14:04
but it feels that same level of escalation let's get it to the table Adrian I'm up for that y looks like a good one yeah sounds like one that I
14:11
might like I think you would yeah I think you would I think you would certainly happy to put on the table mhm
14:17
sounds good thanks mate curly um well I just wanted to expand on
Kerley - Mycelia
14:23
how am I doing really to say that I've got a stinking horrible cold so I apologize if I don't sound my usual self
14:28
um and also I've just got back from holiday so you know that was really nice so I'll say that's a positive so
14:34
probably net even um net neutral net neutral yeah um but as far as what I've played um obviously because I've been
14:40
away for 10 days I haven't really played an awful lot lately um but we did get to
14:46
the table Melia um last night actually with myself Becky and Stuart nuu who's
14:51
friend of the Pod um yeah just a really really good game by JJ Neville the
14:57
kickstarters have just started um what's that s splitstone games is yeah splitstone games um the kickstarters
15:03
have just started sort of delivering so um fulfilling so yeah um really good
15:09
game based around the idea of uh mushrooms and but it's a bit more it's kind of got wingspan Vibes in my opinion
15:17
with certainly with the art style and you're like yeah you're playing mushrooms instead of birds but there are
15:22
some key differences for an example it's more of a not a dude's on the map game exactly but it kind of plays like like
15:29
that where you've got like one mother mushroom and the idea of the game is you got choices of six different actions you
15:34
do so for the most part you're sporing um which basically puts out um you know
15:40
little mushroom spores and it's basically the way that you pay for things um depending where those spores
15:46
land which partly is your uh partly a static you always go down on the on the
15:52
one that your mushroom your sporing is on and then it's decided by wind so you kind of have to be a bit tactical about
15:58
where you side to Spore and which mushrooms you Spore and all those type of things um and then use the spores to
16:04
pay for new mushrooms so it's kind of a little bit of a builds up slowly over time and then what I really like about
16:09
the game is that um you also when you finish sporing so for example all the normal mushrooms apart from your mother
16:16
mushrooms only get a certain amount of times you can Spore off them um when you're done sporing with them you
16:21
actually then Decay which then gives you one-off effects as well and you know so you get VPS for the mushrooms you play
16:27
but you also got to think about okay well that's a really good ability do I want to go for that one that gives less VP that gives you more uh better
16:34
abilities and you know is trying to keep people away from your little mushroom Eric because if you're not linked with all your spores and there's someone in
16:40
the way then I'm afraid they they can steal your stuff and use your spores and it's quite a I would say a mix between a
16:47
wingspan Style game and more of an area control game but without being too brutal about it so yeah just a really
16:54
interesting it plays pretty quick like the three of us we got it down even though it was our first time playing for
17:00
a little while but we were all pretty good watched videos and everything else and me and JP played it at UK games Expo
17:08
last year last year um so we weren't too bad on it but we played it in about 80
17:14
minutes um which I thought was pretty reasonable I think we could have got it done in an hour as well to be honest so
17:19
it plays pretty quickly and yeah just really good fun overall you know um yeah so it's his first 4A into the gaming
17:26
world and I believe he's going to try and do some more now we're under the splitstone games sort of umbrella so
17:32
yeah just um if you like that sort of game you like mushrooms or certainly beautiful artwork as well then it's
17:37
something to maybe have a little go on cuz I'm sure it'll be coming to uh a retail release at some point soon yeah
17:43
he he did all the artwork didn't he so he actually drew the uh all the mushrooms and artwork and everything
17:49
Jack yeah and he and he's amazing like he's literally went to the games expert and he was selling his artwork there as
17:54
well cuz it's that good that people were just buying it out right so yeah so it's
18:00
a really really good game beautiful artwork and um yeah if you like that sort of thing and you like wingspan and
18:06
maybe like um you know the varied world of mushrooms give it a go thanks mate Chris hi so right I in between doing
Chris P - Dark Tomb: Bloodthorn Island
18:14
lots of work uh this week I have been playing um dark tomb bloodthorn Island
18:22
um it's a Kickstarter that I backed ages and ages and ages ago um and it arrived
18:28
ages ages and ages ago funny enough um and I just put it on the shelf and I I'll play that at some point and then I forgot it was there then the other day
18:35
where I because the box is so small it just it just fit in with everything else so I was like oh that's fine so I found
18:41
it the other day and I thought I'll play that so in between my lunch break I just all set up it's really small it literally comes in like a large I don't
18:47
know like an old Altoids tin you know it's kind of like kind of quite large tin um everything's got little tiny
18:54
cubes little Maps little Dungeon Crawler um and you can just set up and sort of play it about I know half hour or so so
19:01
I managed to get a play of it the whole the whole game played through on my lunch break um which was great um
19:08
there's like four characters um each of them have different abilities you you got like a rangy person like a tank kind
19:13
of thing um little dungeon CER you start off in a dock make your way down a river go to an island fight a big bad it's
19:19
kind of works quite nicely um I wouldn't play it any more than even though it says one to four players I wouldn't play
19:26
any more than two just CU how small it is um try to have four people you know fully grown people um around this tiny
19:33
little game that takes up you know less than a third of a quarter of a table kind of thing um would be a bit of a
19:39
squish but you can probably do it two player quite nicely just just between you um but no I played two characters on
19:45
my own um and it was it was perfectly fine managed to do it quite nicely um yeah worked really nicely can you play
19:51
it on an airplane table yes so it's that small it's that small yeah yeah you can flip it down and do and do it perfectly
19:57
fine without without having to L drop side and I be I would be worried because
20:02
the cubes are so small once that once once that's gone you know finding that ever again they are brightly colored but
20:09
they're not finding that again can't hardly move on an airplane let alone picking up cubes no exactly yeah um but
20:15
no brilliant game um yeah I would definitely recommend picking up it's like cost me about 15 quid when I
20:21
kickart it's a little bit more now cuz it's come out properly um and they've got a new version of it now as well come
20:26
out as well but what the characters then you can players testing you you want some names um if you got the BIOS the
20:33
BIOS herez I had it here um so you got Lara who's like your sort of rangy
20:38
person uh you've got Forge who's like a stone Golem bloke is also your tank mhm
20:44
uh Zan who's like some sort of rogy lady kind of deal and then there's Von clay
20:50
who's a very Posh man who has a bird and you can send him out to go and do stuff like a raven and go pick up like a wing
20:57
Bird yeah this is me bird this me Bird go go pick up that would you love um but no they're
21:03
really good um there's like various enemies and stuff they just pop up um the only difference between more enemy
21:09
more sort players and less um is their health pools for the enemies okay so they have more Health based on how many
21:14
players there are or how many characters you're controlling I mean is it a roll dice and hit hit a target number yeah
21:21
yeah yeah do damage that way classic D dungeon calling so that it's great but I just like all the tiny cubes there's
21:27
also a little tiny little plastic boat that you put all your cubes on so when you're going down the river on the
21:32
second scenario you're all on the little boat and you have to shoot you have to shoot stuff and you get like monsters jumping on the boat to try and get you
21:38
but they're just but just a little little tiny boat like the size of your Thum kind of thing just a little boat
21:43
with these little cubes going down it's brilliant just made me smile when I saw that what about yourself JP what have you been up to yeah I mean since this
JP - Arcs
21:50
little kind of recording pause quite quite a few things but um I'm going to talk about arcs mainly cuz that uh I
21:57
quiet it about probably two months ago yeah yeah and uh I've been having a lot of fun with this
22:04
box cuz it's it's it's nuts this game is nuts so for those that don't know what
22:09
ARX is ARX is a by leader games designed by Cole World who's the same person who
22:14
design route and basically it's a kind of space opery kind of game but packed
22:23
into a short play time it's not a 4X it's not doesn't feel like a 4X but it's
22:28
its own unique thing it's I don't really know of any other game that's quite like it in the way it plays so so basically
22:36
you are kind of a uh you know I'll say a faction but you're just you know some
22:41
dudes in space really it doesn't really matter and um and you you kind of just
22:46
trying to basically get control and and power for your your civilization as the game goes through and depending if
22:53
you're playing with the leaders and law I call it an expansion it's not an expansion it's just basically a set of
22:58
cards that you would throw in it's a module um if you're playing with that then it gives your your faction a bit of asymmetry in terms of who you are and
23:05
what you're all about and and that's quite useful because your leader gives you like something good and it gives you
23:11
something that you're not good at as well as well as your LW card which might pair well it might be completely
23:17
different you know and you kind of uh draft those at the beginning of the game so it's all based around this pseudo
23:25
trick taking mechanic it's not really trick taken in the kind of major sense but it's it's it's kind of trick taken
23:33
like um where you know you you kind of whoever has initiative playing a a lead card which is one of the four suits that
23:40
are available you know you've got like aggression card that allow you to attack you've got Administration cards that
23:45
allow you to tax planets and get resources and mobilization cards that allow you to move your ships around and
23:51
construction cards that will allow you to build cities and more ships so you can move them around and fight people
23:57
and so you play in this league card in uh to determine the the suit and then other players can kind of either uh
24:04
surpass that which is playing a card of the same suit but a higher number which that means they're likely to get the
24:09
initiative off you next time uh or you can kind of play any card that you've got faed down to copy that lead card but
24:15
you only do one action of that or you can pivot and play any card that you've got that's not the lead suit but you can
24:20
only play one action on because each of the cards range from depending on if you're playing you know four player or
24:26
whatever but they range from 1 to seven and the lower the card number is more
24:32
powerful give you more actions the higher the card you get less actions but that's just kind of counterbalancing of
24:38
you winning initiative and all that kind of stuff and you can do things to seize the initiative as well I'm not going to go into the the major rules teach cuz I
24:44
can't be bothered um but generally you're kind of playing this game you're playing cars down it's fast you don't
24:50
take that long on your turns you're zipping around and you know you're amassing ships you're moving them around
24:55
you're having fights and all the while how you're scoring points is through these Ambitions so when you're the lead
25:02
you can declare an ambition of which there are five I think but they're all tied to your uh card numbers from 2 3 4
25:11
5 six so depending on what you have in your hand tells you well what Ambitions
25:17
you could possibly declare if you had initiative and here lies the rub which
25:23
is what you've got in your hand is what you've got in your hand you got to make it you know you got to do the best with it and where people can struggle with
25:30
this game is if they're trying to grand architect this grand plan over the course of the game you're going to get
25:35
frustrated as hell because you can't do it every round in this game is like its own game and you got to do what you can
25:41
do with the the hand that you've got so it kind of makes for some interesting plays and and I know pivot is one of the
25:48
actions in there but pivoting is what you're doing all the time you like trying to seesaw around trying to get
25:53
the best out of it and some people are going to hate that and some people are going to love that for me I love
26:00
tactical Play I Don't Like Grand strategy cuz I'm [ __ ] at it so says a
26:06
man who's got like an entire wall full of Str strategy based games yeah yeah I
26:12
say don't like it I'm just not very good at having a grandm plan and orchestrating that over 4 hours you know
26:20
so give me a hand the cards and go make the best of that I can kind of cope with it and and when you know the game and
26:25
you know the system you start to see the holes as in not the the bad H but you start to see the roots of how you're
26:31
going to get VPS and you go oh and you feel really clever when you start pulling that off and but yeah it it's
26:38
it's brutal it's absolutely brutal so the first game we played I'll give you an example I had amassed all of these
26:44
cards I had this lovely little engine I could do all this cool stuff Davey he he
26:49
came in and raided me and basically left me in with just my Underpants he literally stole every card resource that
26:56
I had I had nothing and you think think what how how can you do that and you think oh God and but then you just find
27:04
a way you think it's not it's not that bad it feels like oh my god I've lost all my [ __ ] um but you kind of find your
27:11
way around it and you get on with it and and you kind of need to enter into arcs with that frame of mind where you know
27:19
what you know it's a bit of a it's a bit of a gladiatorial pet you're going to you're going to get stabbed a few times
27:24
and it's okay not it's not the end of the game and you can still go around it and even if you tank that that round
27:31
everything's kind of reset off you go again and you know and it scales as the game goes on anyway so I'm really
27:37
enjoying it I've played it about four times it's mad it's absolutely mad and
27:43
every time I've played it's been different um and yeah I'm I'm digging it
27:48
and I've also got the um the blighted reach expansion for it uh which kind of introduces a uh a three act campaign so
27:57
here's the hypocrite me saying I don't think I'll play a campaign again game again and I am but it's only three games
28:03
it's kind of like I can I can manage that it's three games it's fine but that introduces an all sorts of uh I don't
28:10
know sandbox of even more nonsense into this game so I'm I'm intrigued to see how that plays we've got that coming up
28:17
um in mid October to start with so can't comment on it right now so many commenting on the base but really loving
28:23
it it's good fun it's got a couple of good mechanics that I like ARS cuz I've played it uh once or twice I forget but
28:30
um yeah the the well what you said perfectly actually was the the getting your hand of cards and you just you do
28:37
the best that you're able to with that like amalgamating or changing your strategy according to the cards that you've got is a mechanic that I've
28:43
learned that I really like um cuz I think there are some certain games that you've been surprised that I've gotten
28:49
on with cuz there's too much choice but when you limited to the amount of cards you've got and you just got to make the
28:54
right choice depending on what you've got I much prefer that style of game and AR is exactly that way like you might
29:01
not be able to do what you want to do but you just got to do what's best according to what you got you got to
29:06
find the thing you need to do yeah that's the difference yeah yeah and add that to the fact that I really like the
29:12
fact that there's so many different tactics you can do in that game there is no right way of doing it and actually
29:18
you can go for a really military style a bit like reminding me of toilight Imperium and you can just totally lose
29:24
by Miles even though you get the rubbish out of everyone because the way that it works is you're half complete and like
29:30
objectives almost um and if you don't get those right you don't time those right you don't pay to I forget what it
29:36
is you can tell me when you choose them is it when you seize the initiative you get to choose which ones you do well the
29:41
Ambitions yeah yeah it's when when you lead when you play the league card you you declare that so yeah so basically
29:47
speaking it's when you have the initiative then so here's the example Warlords one of the Ambitions which
29:52
basically rewards you for all the trophies that you collect all the things that you blow up yeah and then you basically collect them onto your board
29:58
and if War laws declared great if you've got 15 things on your board fantastic
30:03
you're probably going to score that now if you're going around raiding everyone and fighting everybody and collecting trophies and that ambition doesn't get
30:10
played well tough [ __ ] you a get anything yeah so it doesn't benefit you you know you can KCK the rubbish out of everyone all game and end up with zero
30:16
points so you know it's just one of them like I say a bit like TI way you have to keep a good eye out for all the
30:21
different objectives otherwise you're just going to get a panic yeah interestingly I think it's starting to click now so I'm not sure how I'm going
30:28
to feel about this game I haven't played it yet but it was one of those where I was like I'd like to play it but I genuinely not sure how I will feel about
30:34
it so I've been talking to other groups and sort saying how have you got on with it knowing that they've played it and one of the things they said was that the
30:40
reason why it feels like a leader game to some extent is that you have to have the experience otherwise you'll get a
30:47
Runway winner at the last minute sort thing where they score just a ton of points and they'll run away with it which is what could happen with root
30:53
right if you didn't know the ecosystem yeah then you lost because you didn't know the ecosystem
30:58
and it's I feel like now I'm getting to understand why they're making that comment is if you're if you're not
31:04
keeping an eye out for everything Who's got what or kind of what's coming around there's a good chance someone will run
31:10
away with it at the last minute because they know what's going on because they've got the experience um but yeah
31:16
that was the one comment I've heard a lot is that you have to know the game a little bit because if you play with
31:22
experienced players and you're the Newbie the chances are you won't know what to look out for in order to win the game which again again I'm not a big fan
31:29
of right but the trick- taking thing I quite like I like the idea of that so I'm I'm still on the fence about it but
31:34
yeah just lots of people are talking about it at the moment it feels like because it's it's new and is
31:40
asymmetrical but it's it's kind of not quite root levels of asymmetrical but lots of people loved root but then I
31:47
think kind of just got over got overburdened with root with all of the expansions and everything and and the as
31:53
you say the the Buy in to the game from a point of view of you need to know a
31:58
certain level to have a chance in the game yeah got too big I think for rout and interestingly I think ARX is kind of
32:05
giving people that ecosystem idea that sort of everyone's a bit asymmetric and I have to know what I'm going to do and
32:10
what to look out for but hasn't quite got that level of asymmetry in it so
32:16
it's definitely not the same asymmetry as root you know as I said it's it's a couple of cards that you draft that's
32:22
your asymmetry and then obviously what you you kind of require for the game to give you your engine but but yeah it's
32:29
it's it's completely completely different um the the teach of it is not that bad uh I think but you do have to
32:36
have played it to kind of understand those excuse the pum but roots in in the game to kind of go get yourself out of
32:44
that well I'm locked I need an aggression card I didn't get one drawn well I can't do what I want well buddy
32:50
find a different path you're going to have to do you know what I mean yeah so yeah I'm I'm really enjoying it it's
32:57
it's it's kind of a convention game for me as well it's like one you could absolutely take to Convention and have a
33:02
blast cuz the bant around the table and like you say your stuff just gets nicked with me and everyone those laughs it's
33:08
brilliant and I love it and again I was getting all the the hate in terms of all the things stolen I was having a good
33:13
time CU I I knew what the contract was with that game it's fine it's good it's
33:19
going to happen I think if you go into that and you're prone to saltiness I think you just need to stay away from it
33:24
really yes cuz it is one of those games JP says that you just got a you got to accept the fact that people are going to
33:29
attack you and screw you over and your master plan is probably not going to come off exactly the way you want it and if you start getting nasty about it well
33:36
it's going to ruin everyone's day def I was and and yet you started playing
33:41
it o shot I thought C wouldn't like it no I did I I thought it wouldn't be his
33:48
Jam yeah and I can surprised me I can understand why because yeah I wouldn't have said it sad I'm not sure if it's
33:54
one for me but I do want to give it a go in the same way I think that would have been my stuns for curly as well is I
33:59
think you should give it a go but I don't know that it's for him so it's interesting that it is it's interesting that we got so sure opinions about each
34:05
other and I actually think that you won't like it yeah that's my personal hey I would definitely recommend giving
34:10
it a go but I don't think you'll like it yeah I'm not sure I will either but I want to give it a go yeah definitely
34:17
definitely but no yeah great game okay ARS let's move on to the next segment
TURN 3 - Main Event: Beyond the board gamers
34:23
[Music]
34:33
so we are now at our main event where we are going to talk about beyond the board gamers so this is an episode idea that
34:38
our coffee supporters have kind of voted on for the most actually they they basically like the idea of us talking a
34:45
bit more about ourselves which is weird to us crazy crazy people yeah are you sure cuz we can talk about Bard games
34:52
but now I think we know we've been doing this podcast for what two and a half years and we talk about all different
34:58
aspects of the Hobby and you know and some some of our lists have been with us for 2 and a half years and and and we
35:04
don't really talk about ourselves that much we just talk about the games and things and I thought why not let's just turn the tables on us let's put the
35:11
spotlight on us are we I've got eight spotl above us but you get my point it's
35:18
uh a good chance to to learn a little bit more about us so this this might be some multiple episodes that we'll do cuz
35:23
there's only four of us today and there's a lot more on the Pod that obviously can't talk cuz they're not here um but as Curley said you've got
35:31
the best for right yeah I was going to say they they're not very interesting ones oh shots fired shots fired so I've
35:37
got a bunch of questions I'm just going to kind of open it up and we'll have a bit of a chat see where it goes and uh
35:43
let's see where it goes ready to rock so first things first what do we all do as
What do we all do as jobs whilst we're not making content for you guys?
35:49
Jobs what's our professions cuz it's definitely not full-time content creators right that's sound like Le us
35:56
there not yet not yet one day we can quit our jobs quit our jobs and then we come content creators
36:03
full time but I think we're away off from that so we still have to r on our good old job so Chrissy P what do you do
36:10
mate I am nerd by Day nerd by night good man so I am a systems administrator for
36:17
a global software development company yeah baby it's so exciting sounds so
36:23
much fun but that is that is it um I sit at my desk and I tell people to turn
36:28
things off and on again um I set up new users I create documentation and create training videos
36:35
um it's that's that's the fun that's that's where I get this sort of amazing
36:41
personality from doing that for God knows how many years now but didn't you used to have a different job I've got a
36:46
dark past you have do you want to share that dark past with the listeners do you want me to go through the whole history
36:52
just one particular one particular just one particular Ro that I was for a year and a half a traffic
37:00
[Laughter] Warden it was through redundancy I
37:05
needed a job to pay for a house therefore I had to take any job I could get and that's the only job I could get
37:12
did you have a little hat I didn't have a hat no I could wear a beanie if it was cold um fine absolutely got no where
37:21
people to run me over they got say see me so they can hit me um but no yeah I did that for a year and and a half quite
37:28
a long time ago now when I was mid 20s no early 20s actually um yeah did that
37:34
for a little while to be honest it's not a bad job it's quite fun yeah being a
37:40
bit of a dick to people um but I tried to stay away from that cuz I didn't want
37:46
to get my face smashed in yeah um but no it was it was all right it's not too bad it was
37:51
fine when I was based in um M head two days a week just wandering around on the
37:56
seafront great just looking at [ __ ] it's fine bag of chips yes it's great your car's part
38:03
wrongly you're an hour late have some that I know remember there's one time this woman who ran out who parked in the
38:10
bus bus stop bus lane uh and then driving down the bus Lan in mine head and then pulled into the bus stop and
38:16
just left her car there and I was just watching I was Lally stood right next to her and she just stopped looked at me and then walked off so I was just like
38:22
well you can have that your fair game now and she was like I had to give him to the bank I was like find some other
38:28
parking space not right there where the bus is going what are you doing right behind her um so that was fun yeah play
38:35
I just thought I'd bring it up cuz it's funny yeah and thanks no sorry mate love
38:41
you love you early what about you mate chw chw choo choo no I was just thinking
38:46
about this trying to get trying to get the wording cuz uh I always remember one of my old friends always used to laugh
38:52
at me saying it this way let's let's try and get it right so I train train drivers to drive
38:58
trains wait just say it again once more I drive
39:04
train I train train drivers to drive trains how much wood would a would CH
39:10
chook if CH wood yeah exactly so yeah that's it basically I do that for Great Western Railway you're in the southwest
39:16
all the way from um Plymouth up to reading usually MH um so yeah on theway
39:23
for for 20 years and train driver before being doing this job for um 10 years so yeah but the curries are
39:31
you know a well-known family for being on the railways there right working in the rail yeah my my old man was uh was
39:36
on the railway originally um and then my older brother then me and then my younger brother so yeah it's uh Three
39:43
Brothers currently on the uh on the railway one as a driver one as a train manager and one as uh a yeah training
39:51
manager myself so awesome yeah there you go that's quite cool I didn't realize that I knew your little brother was on
39:56
the trains but I didn't realize that much of your family had been as well Legacy there it I like it in all honesty
40:01
it wasn't deliberate it was just I could be I could uh continue working in game
40:07
as a you know as supervisor assistant manager for 10 or 11k a year at the time
40:12
and a lot of stress or I could earn 160 and a half Grand wandering around a platform doing quite well very little
40:19
little so it was like not the competition but I well I did get a hat yeah when I was on the platforms but
40:24
nowadays I don't which is a bit sad but yeah the hats were really expensive actually and yeah they're worth a lot of
40:30
money now but yeah they were handmade and everything and you I think it was about 150 quid they used to pay for
40:35
those wow so yeah but they don't issue them anymore for obvious reasons but yeah back when I first started they did
40:41
fa play but yeah there you go so proper rway boy over here and uh yeah love it
40:47
yeah what time is it I don't know what to 1810 he was laughing at me for my use of
40:54
the 24-hour clock the other day but so I don't get this right because cuz I mean
41:00
Americans call it military time right whereas we call it 24hour but I don't understand why people
41:06
struggle with it so much like I just don't get why are people so it's the easiest and we'll get into my
41:13
job in a minute and why it's important but it's the easiest it's an Insight here it's the easiest thing to understand like you're
41:19
literally deducting 12 at worst you're deducting too if you need to like look at it from the wor I don't even think of
41:25
it that way I I don't even think of it absolutely you know 18 or 6 p.m. right so you just
41:30
know it but and and sometimes when I'm writing it I get it wrong CU dyslexic and so my brain's like oh this number is
41:35
clearly that number and I'll get it wrong or whatever but for the most part understanding it seems really easy to me
41:41
but I know so many people who struggle with the 24-hour clock and I just don't I don't again I think if you're bought
41:47
up with that 24-hour clock sort of built into you from a job or parents or
41:53
whatever then fair enough but yeah I do find it fascinating that like whole countries don't understand 24-hour
42:00
clocks it feels like there we go there we go hey ho going Adrian oh so why is
42:06
that important to you then what do you do so I am a planning resource manager
42:13
for a contact center which really means I there's kind of two parts to the job I
42:18
forecast how many phone calls or how many contacts are expected into the contact center based on previous
42:24
requirements demands anything that's currently happen happen in the world that might affect the number of phone calls coming in and then I match that to
42:31
the number of staff I need on phones or emails or whatever at the time and I don't at the moment do that myself but I
42:37
have done in the past and now I manage a team to do all that stuff so I think it
42:43
kind of hints as to why I might like beige Euros so much is because I'm just used to doing data analysis pattern
42:49
recognition spread sheets yeah basically spreadsheet like work um or or bi work
42:55
and stuff like that that I think then the beige Euro part of me is naturally wired that way as well so I think I just
43:02
do a beig Euro as a job basically is what I'm saying yeah you're basically moving cubes from one area to another
43:07
area yeah just I'm literally assigning people to workloads based on what the current demand is which is very similar
43:13
to what quite a lot of Economic and and and Euro games are you're playing a grand worker placement game yeah
43:20
basically but with real people and real lives almost literally yeah yeah so so that's what I do I've done it for quite
43:27
a while now and before that I did sort of adjacent jobs to that where it was lots of planning or data analysis and
43:33
stuff like that so I I enjoy it you know I think we'd all most of us would probably say that if there's any other
43:39
job there's certain other jobs we'd love to be doing instead but from a kind of reality perspective of what can I earn
43:46
money from that you know doesn't stress me out too much or that I kind of enjoy
43:51
or is rewarding in some way yeah I think it's I think it's a good balance of that yeah I'm on the same page with that one
43:57
as well I could be you know doing something of a lot higher stress but for the work life balance and everything
44:03
else against money it's probably you know the best job I can think of for myself as well so yeah happiness is the
44:09
key 100% happiness is definitely key um yeah me I am race yourself as some
44:16
corporate bollocks I am a business transformation consultant really that's
44:22
Lord d uh but in English that is essentially I'm I'm I kind of help
44:28
companies in their current state of people processes and Technology get to a kind of Target state of their people
44:35
processes and Technologies what that could mean anything from organizational
44:40
design it could mean implementing new Solutions and systems like HR and finance and all sorts of stuff so I love
44:47
when you're working on CRM systems we could talk CRM yeah we have little CRM chats and go o all about sales and
44:54
service and things like that but yeah I I I basically get involved in four sorts and I um I got made redundant about 8
45:00
years ago and was the best thing that ever happened to me cuz I just set up on my own from there and I've been wed to
45:07
kind of do it uh for a long time and it's nothing like a kick up the ass of
45:12
losing your job that makes you uh set up on your own so I basically did that and
45:17
I'm not look back really and there are times where it's uh completely mad like
45:22
right now and there are times where it's completely manageable and it's you know so it really justes come in waves and
45:29
you know the market as it is out there it can be very very up and down and yeah
45:34
but it's the variety I love it I love it because of the variety working for different companies could be the railway
45:41
it could be traffic wardens it could be you know cere whatever it's it's all it's different different flavors every
45:48
month and that's what's cool about it the only thing that I would say with your job is that it seems very stressful
45:53
to me I'm not sure I could do it to be honest for that reason so sometimes when I think about my own job and I think
46:00
like I just couldn't cope with yours like and I wouldn't want to you know it was just one of them that I think like
46:06
kudos to you no thanks yeah so I quite like a bit of project management occasionally which is like 90% of your
46:13
job like it's the idea of project managing a company that I haven't built up those relationships inside of
46:19
naturally you very much have to kind of have to cold start a lot of those the those things and I think that's where I
46:25
would really struggle with doing your job is because just don't have that I kind of want to know who I'm dealing
46:30
with and how I kind of need to work with them in order to work with them for doing projects so yeah so every time
46:37
you're like I've got someone new and I'm already now like four projects with them and I'm like Oh no just so used to it
46:43
it's just don't I probably don't think about it so it's quite comfortable for me but like anything right when you do a
46:49
lot of things over and over and over again you become comfortable anyway there we go little bit of a taste on
46:54
word especially your interpersonal skills after be like absolutely spot on don't they yeah people need to kind of I
46:59
need to get on with people and I need to yeah and I think my Sunny disposition
47:06
helps you don't just walk in and go well that's [ __ ] no no you don't you go could be improved yes yeah but you've you've
47:14
done a great job not um but yeah let's not talk about work anymore cuz we want
47:19
to some of your clients might be listening yeah yeah if you're listening it's great it's all good um so I want to
Other than board games what are our other passions?
47:26
know other than board games which is obviously a passion for us all that's why we're all here talking about them
47:31
but have we got any other passions that maybe have equal weight to ball game that we don't know about you know I've
47:38
got a a few Shire ones you know I would say um long-term I would say computer
47:43
games is my main one um but everyone and like a lot of people love computer games so I'm not going to go into too much
47:49
detail on that one I'd say the main one would be Lord of the Rings um that's my
47:54
main kind of uh interest I suppose I would I would say it transgresses and
47:59
goes across all of my different Hobbies but I'm going to cheat a little bit and say that one um hence why I love war of
48:05
the ring and you know the war of the Ring card game and all the all the Lord of the Ring stuff but you know
48:10
Collectibles got collection of swords and um pictur magificent dis plates and
48:17
yeah I watch the films very regular basis and yeah so I would say that that's going to be my main one but more
48:23
recently me and Becky have been getting into Lego oh yeah haven't you you got an Optimus Prime Optimus Prime is complete
48:29
is he done yeah Optimus Prime is complete and we've bought each other for Christmas um that was an awful I what
48:36
kind of Daffy dark Lego are you building over there that that was your that was the Transformer
48:42
transforming but it kind of goes across both CU we for for Christmas we've bought each other bador which is where
48:49
Sauron lives RS I got it but we were
48:54
there I thought it was like herpes or something s Ron lives yeah so it's the one with the big eye at the top in the
49:01
in the yeah in The Lord of the Rings film so yeah we bought that one we saw it um it wasn't really on sale but when
49:07
you go abroad and this is a bit of advice for everyone if you see something when you're leaving Heath throw or
49:13
Gatwick what they do now which is a relatively recent thing is you can um you can buy it as if you're going abroad
49:19
and then you can collect it on the way back so you still get it V8 free but you don't have to kind of cut it around you
49:25
don't have to cut it around with you in well we went to Greece so yeah so we we tried that out and it worked absolutely
49:30
perfectly you know so um yeah we we picked up bador on the way out I forget how much we saved but you whatever it
49:36
was 10% whatever it was um yeah so really well worth doing and uh yeah
49:42
we're looking forward to get stuck into that but we're waiting till Christmas yeah it's so Zen though is it like doing
49:47
Lego it's just like everything's shut out and know you got to think where's
49:53
this go where's that where's that go and then it's just you chipping away it's not a problem but you just chiping away
49:58
and then you go oh look at out we did a thing it's well it's as well like I don't know um what what you guys are
50:04
like I'm saying this to everyone who's listening um but like we we try and find things that we can do together that
50:10
isn't just watching TV or film or something we do do those things but it's nice to just do something together where
50:16
you can just well like you said just chill out relax in each other's company and and chat through the day or whatever
50:22
so we found Lego to be really useful in that way cuz we both really like it so um so I would say you know I could go in
50:28
a million different computer games I like but there you go there's the there's the well I might Ash you in a
50:33
bit but we'll come back to that okay Adrian um yeah at the moment I'm very
50:40
board game Centric or adjacent so I've played Warhammer since well I played I
50:46
think I I don't know if I've told this story and if it made the cut but I used to play Warhammer when I was about 10 11
50:51
12 and gave it up and then when I was 18 a few of us first year of uni got very
50:57
drunk at the student bar and started reminiscing as you tend to cuz you're 18 and therefore you have a lot of life to
51:03
reminisce on at that point but we Reminiscing on all the things we loved as kids and Warhammer came up there's
51:09
about 12 of us all of us had realized we' played Warhammer so we made a packed a drunken packed to go in and buy a army
51:16
box or whatever of Warhammer and start it all up again and out of that I think eight of us turned up very hung over the
51:22
next day at a Games Workshop and bought it and I think there's five of us still playing now and so yeah and so I've played a lot
51:30
of Warhammer and similar war games 3D printing I do a lot of 3D printing but that's a lot of board game based inserts
51:36
and bits and pieces like that so at the moment it's very it's very board game Centric but historically I've had a lot
51:42
of sort of other thing I've played golf and I've gone fishing and I very bizarrely at quite a young age I played
51:48
green ballls um and won some tournaments and stuff like that playing green green
51:54
bowls very basically I I used to live um just down the road from Grand my granddad yeah and he got to an age where
52:00
he couldn't play golf anymore so I wanted to say still sort of do hobby
52:05
stuff with him and the only thing he could physically manage to do was green balls so I was like yeah go on I'll join you for green balls and then one
52:12
beginner's tournaments and like young people's tournament and stuff like that and yes I did a bit of that um very
52:18
randomly and yeah I've done I can't think if I said airsoft or not but I've done Airsoft um which I used to do
52:25
military simulation week weekends where you spend a whole weekend sort of camped out with your with your air rifle on
52:31
your your Airsoft rifle on you and in the full camo gear and all that kind of stuff and then sleep for two days
52:36
afterwards because youve spent three whole days trudging through a forest and so yeah I tend to kind of do like three
52:42
four year spans of doing a hobby of some description or a sport or just before lockdown I was doing um OCR obstacle
52:48
course racing so I do like 10K obstacle course races and stuff like that and really got into that and we did it for a
52:54
charity like a tough MO but tough mother electrocutes you and I refus I refused
52:59
to torture I refused to spend money being potentially electrocuted so um I used to do there was a one called The
53:06
Nut challenge um and there was one called um the muscle acre and stuff like that and so I've done a few of those and
53:12
we did that for charity which helped give you a bit of motivation so I tend to kind of stick with a hobby for sort
53:17
of four or five years and again Warhammer and board games are kind of been there long term so don't worry I'm not going anywhere soon hopefully but um
53:24
most things I've kind of had four or five years at and then after a while I'll be a bit like ah it's time for a
53:29
new hobby or something different and I'll move on to something different but yeah I think that's kind of kind of me
53:36
and what I do at the moment is mostly board games 3D printing and Warhammer fair play about you Chrissy I will join
53:44
Adrian on the Warhammer front I don't play it I paint it yeah so me and my
53:49
partner CLA will sit down in a on a quiet evening and just sort of paint some figures just go out and buy a
53:55
random box and go right was going to sit down and paint these now and Chuck a film on in the background normally something Marvel related cuz it's me and
54:02
i' like to have something on going in the back at least I can pay slight attention to while I'm doing something else yeah you've seen it a million times
54:08
watch anyway so it's fine um but yeah we just go down and do that um because I send I spend so much time in front of
54:15
screens like gaming or my job um I am trying to get out a bit more um just not
54:22
don't be a loser get outside touch some grass kind of thing um yeah exactly um
54:28
and my partner likes to go fishing with her dad every week if she can um he's
54:33
getting his health is going down a little bit and he finds he can't do that anymore um so she's like I want to go
54:39
fishing so I'm like oh I'll go with you then it's not my forte I might be sitting there on my phone the majority
54:44
of the time but at least I'm outside and know helping out and being part of this the whole the whole process yeah um and
54:51
she really likes it so I tend to try and do that as well every other week or so if I can you can always take little
54:56
dungeon caller game I could do yeah put on a little table play that absolutely take uh take too many bones it's
55:03
waterproof it's fine it's very true you could is it is it carry there but is it fresh water fishing uh yes so lakes or
55:09
canals or Rivers yeah we've been a couple of times sea fishing down off mine head which is quite a good fun um I
55:15
that's where I caught my the biggest stuff that I've caught um but yeah no knew that about well I don't do that
55:21
often it's only when CLA fany's doing it she goes do you want to go yeah right go then um so go do that but no most
55:26
evenings is either playing Xbox or yeah or painting so it's good fun you paint
55:32
all my uh all my Warhammer mate I'm I'm all right I'm not great you might not you might not like me doing it you might
55:38
go that's a bit of [ __ ] um but I try I put give it a go um but everything's all
55:44
right so far I haven't messed up too bad where I've had to go now just have to wipe this thing and start again um so that's not too bad I do itay yeah just
55:52
spray yeah your miniature is just a Big Blob cuz i' pain over 20,000 times um no it
55:59
hasn't got to the point where I've um really ruined anything that I go I just have to bin this or to really start
56:04
again so that's a result and I there's like there different stages of like paint Readiness you got like battle
56:09
ready which is the just you've done it once and it's kind of done and then you've got like parade ready where it looks really fancy I haven't gone down
56:16
the parade ready yet because it's so much fine detail and I'd have to buy about a thousand more paints yeah um
56:22
rather than just the base sort of like 50 paints that you kind of need just to get the majority of stuff done um at
56:27
least look at you look at it and go there you go it looks what it's it looks like what it's supposed to look like that'll do let's move on to something
56:33
else and do something else so yeah mine I forgot I've got to answer mine you have mine is
56:39
snowboarding so snowboarding is a big passion of mine I haven't been able to
56:46
do a lot of it since kids and things like that but like rewind before kids I
56:52
uh God that was great it the things you have the things you could do the time
56:57
you have on your hands God you know what I can't even all your joints didn't ache and yeah well me me and Sh had this
57:03
conversation sh my wife I had this conversation the other day and said do you remember what we used to do before
57:08
the kids were were thing like what what do we used to do obviously PG-13 but
57:13
like like just generally like social like what what do we do I don't know like I I can't honestly remember what we
57:20
did to fill our days and and now it's yeah it's just Relentless but in a good way anyway s snowboarding snowboarding I
57:27
learned to I first learned to ski uh for a company I used to work for there were
57:33
a small company they were mad they did lots of like trips like subsidized work
57:38
trips that you could go on and uh yeah and they do ski trips every year so that's just do you want to go on a ski
57:44
trip do I let's go so I learned to ski did that for a year and then I thought you know what I've always wanted to do
57:50
snowboarding cuz it's cool right that'ss cool and uh then the following year I did snowboarding and I loved it
57:56
absolutely loved it so end up buying my own board I still have that snowboard from yeah God when was it from 2004 I
58:04
think when I bought it I still have it it's 20 years old it gets serviced whenever I go it still works and hasn't
58:11
broke too much although the bindings which is what sits on top of the board that you put your feet into they are
58:17
perishing as I found out on my last trip um but yeah it's just this the escapism
58:23
is what it is it's like you are on top of a mountain the views are stunning you can just imagine what the you know the
58:29
views are around there and all you've got to think about is like just got to go left or right do we go left down a or
58:34
right down a and just the feeling of just riding down a slope on a plank of wood going 40 or 50 mil an hour at some
58:41
point go I hope I don't fall over because I'm going to die it's great I absolutely I absolutely love it sounds
58:48
amazing no it's just it's awesome and and like the last time I went was uh
58:54
with with uh Chris bless him um which is a very special trip now because of obviously what's happened but uh yeah
59:02
before then it had been 11 years and and that was for a stag dude was that in the south of France or no yeah no France
59:10
yeah South not well the Alps somewhere in France and um and because it's been
59:15
11 years I was a bit nervous about it because wonder if I've forgotten how to do it but you don't you like riding the bike you just get on and and Away you go
59:22
but I still think that was probably the best I've ever snowboarded ever and I didn't fall over too much which is
59:28
always nice because it hurts but yeah I I absolutely love it and we're taking the kids next year um
59:35
in Feb and they've been going for their lessons this year so proud dad moment
59:40
just watching like my my son and my daughter just go through the learning motions and they're like oh my legs hurt
59:46
I'm like I know I know but they're doing really well they're pretty much nearly there and uh yeah and I cannot wait to
59:53
get them on the slopes for 4 days so we get to Andor uh yeah in Feb so yeah nice
59:59
sounds I love the idea of snowboarding but I I feel like I've passed the point where I can easily learn without
1:00:05
breaking things or damaging things or whatever so I think that's kind of ped but I do love the idea of it and and
1:00:11
you've shown us like videos or photos of it before it does look cool yeah you're not that old Adrian I feel it I'll be
1:00:17
honest like if I could do it like joint but it's you know yeah I learned it when I was 21 or something so I tried
1:00:24
skateboarding last year did didn't you and how's it going yeah sure I um end of
1:00:32
conversation yeah it was it was one of those where I kind of went down the YouTube rabbit hole and thought you know
1:00:37
what I need something to try to get fit again and all that kind of stuff and I'll buy a skateboard and I kind of managed to do a bit of sort of flat
1:00:43
ground getting up to speed and staying on it which sounds really easy but is much more difficult than I expected it
1:00:48
to be and the second it got to a point of let's try and olle I was like you know what it's just I think I'm too old
1:00:55
my points are too bad at this point my knees are knackered already um cuz I used to do breake dancing and I [ __ ]
1:01:00
them breake dancing um such an amazing life H You' done literally
1:01:06
Elric so I um so I did break dancing I used to do um I was trying to learn uh
1:01:12
rubber bands which is where you jump onto your back um and then you kind of launch your legs up to get to a standing
1:01:18
position again and I landed on my heels multiple times having not Le less
1:01:24
than the first time so my heels are knackered and then I'm sure that between that and parkour my knees are knackered
1:01:30
as well is it the king of the random hobby yeah I was played bass in a cover band for a while and like as I say I do
1:01:37
four or five years of doing a hobby great is it and then just go I'm kind of done with that now or I've knackered
1:01:43
that part of my body so much I can't do it anymore and I'll try something else so yeah I thought cuz I like I I like
1:01:49
moving between it I thought oh skateboarding it's fine like I the there's a bit of a sort of Renaissance
1:01:55
of sort of 40 30 40 year olds doing skateboarding and I was like I'm going to join that like now that it's a thing
1:02:01
and it just don't get looked as the weirdo down the park for turning up a 4year old man turning up with a skateboard sort of thing I thought I'll
1:02:06
give it a go and I say I managed to get moving and kind of could turn and do what they call Tic Tacs and stuff like
1:02:13
that and then that was about as far as it went and I was like yeah I can't even I can't do slopes or drop-ins can't do
1:02:18
OES I'm clearly going to kill myself if I do so maybe I'll kind of leave it for a bit now so I still got skateboard in
1:02:24
that I really want a summerboard I know so summer board's basically a snowboard
1:02:31
kind of but on concrete so it looks like a skateboard but you can swivel on it uh
1:02:36
so you can kind of use the edges to break rather than just the you know the back Edge or whatever so yeah you can
1:02:42
swivel it like a snowboard around and it's battery powered so you can literally just go uphill on it which is
1:02:47
awesome no but they're like one and a half Grand w wow and it's like is that a
1:02:53
real midlife crisis me buying a summer ball but I still want one I that sort of
1:02:59
money i' go for one of those new Apple um VR things what are they called Vision
1:03:04
Pro pro yeah yeah that's what I do with that grand and a half Jesus I know there are a lot more than that just nuts in it
1:03:11
know what Adrian just before we move on I have to say no matter how well I know you and of which I've known you for a
1:03:16
few years now nothing would have prepared me for break dancing you know what I mean like it's the most
1:03:23
random great big list of 500 hobbies that Adrian definitely wouldn't be interested in that would be at the
1:03:29
absolute top yeah I had a housemate who was big into it when I when we've had a uni house together and it's like come
1:03:36
along and I wasn't the best but I learned a few moves and could do a few sort of handstands and and night kicks
1:03:42
and stuff like that enough to kind of um yeah kind of get me enough to kind of to
1:03:48
go to like events and stuff like that and take part in like group events and stuff couldn't do solo not quite wasn't
1:03:54
good enough for single stuff but yeah enjoyed it but yeah yeah my my ankles are knackered absolutely knackered
1:04:00
because of being trying moves that I was not equipped to try there we go we all learn something tonight um all right
Quick fire favourite films & video games
1:04:07
next I'm going to kind of go around for a quick fire kind of question so I'm going to give you some topics and what I
1:04:14
want is some quick responses right so he going to explore some of the popular culture of what we like and what our
1:04:21
favorite things are these kind of types of stuff and yeah just quite nice of see if we a ly to anyone so films it's
1:04:28
always good we've all watched films we all like films and I just want a very quick what are your favorite films cuz
1:04:35
I'm not saying one cuz if you ask me what my favorite film is I will crumble and die cuz I can never think but just
1:04:40
generally what are your favorite films of all time Chrissy P favorite films of all time uh so uh first Iron Man that's
1:04:48
probably my f that's probably one of my favorite films of all time nice uh Lord of the Rings first one Fellowship of the Ring that's probably again one of my
1:04:55
favorite ones um and I think either the original
1:05:00
Predator or the original alien they're on on par for me um but yeah I just I
1:05:06
just love the cheesiness of of those films they just really good they so they were so much fun to and they're
1:05:13
brilliant I rewatched both of them like literally two or three days ago um and just remembered how much the these films
1:05:19
are great nice but yeah there you go all right I'm going to go next okay cuz cuz you said alien I'm saying alien
1:05:26
I'm saying the sequel oh another thing JP's wrong [Applause]
1:05:31
at it is alien alien is the better film aliens F I think it's just a what genre
1:05:38
do you like I think they're both really good genre but they're not the same genre one one's fine two is great now
1:05:46
back in your box um yeah aliens I Love Back to the Future I love that series of
1:05:51
films they're up there for me and Indiana Jones I'm like Love It Whip as you know I do have a whips
1:06:01
yeah well you know I do have the Whip and Fedora but it's not a sexual thing I promise anyway that's me Adrian it's
1:06:08
obviously aliens yeah no I I wouldn't put them up there so originally when you put this on the notes you said what's
1:06:13
the latest one you've watched and was it any good and the latest film I watched was Stranger Than Fiction with Will Ferrell which I don't know if you've
1:06:19
seen it or not he's a writer someone else is a writer narrating his life and
1:06:25
as as far as romcoms go I think it's not too bad but there are some really awkward scenes especially when him and
1:06:31
Maggie Gillen hall gyllen Hall suck face really awkwardly in the middle of the
1:06:36
film and you're like that's not a it's not a natural chemistry right there um
1:06:42
one of my Feelgood go-to films that is definitely guilty pleasure is Gone in 60
1:06:47
Seconds which is a terrible film I love that film but it's [ __ ] but it's good it's good it's really good um and the
1:06:54
same as Pacific Rim is exactly the same for me it's it's [ __ ] but it's good um
1:07:00
and then I suppose Lord of the Rings is up there but I quite often find myself revisiting The Dark Knight trilogy
1:07:07
classic very good um which is good and also the under under Gotham sections
1:07:13
where it's all grimy and dirty and all that lot some of that was filmed in Cen just down the road from me which was it
1:07:19
really yeah I did not know that so they picked like the worst parts of Gotham and they filmed it in
1:07:24
cro there you go go there you go go curly Lord of the Rings well the most
1:07:30
obvious one is Lord of the Rings but uh I won't say that now CU it's obvious um
1:07:35
but my actual favorite film above all Lord of the Rings films actually um was
1:07:40
brought out similar time actually which was Gladiator Gladiator with the bad me
1:07:47
which me and Adrian nearly we didn't nearly fall out about it but I just wind it in Adrian I'm telling you now you're
1:07:53
on thin ice P you're on thin I buddy all I said was that the CGI had not aged as
1:07:59
well as a lot of other films from the same period but that I thought that I thought it was a good film and you bit
1:08:05
my head off like I said it was the worst film ever produced you two you two are always
1:08:11
flirting that's the thing you're just totally totally wrong yeah I think it to in all honesty I like I I wasn't
1:08:18
actually annoyed him but it was um I just do think it stands up quite well I really do like the story is amazing and
1:08:26
is still totally sort of um relevant in its relationships and everything else
1:08:32
that I don't think I think you could be they could bring that out tomorrow and it still be an absolute Smash Hit um but
1:08:38
yeah I mean yeah hey look it's what 2000 that was brought out is 24 years old so
1:08:44
you know the CGI is going to suffer a little bit but I think for its time I think it was absolutely uh amazing
1:08:50
similar sort of time as Lord of the Rings which I think was around 2000 2001 and Harry har Potter and all those types
1:08:56
of films I think they've all stood up pretty well over over the years good period of Cinema that was yeah it was a
1:09:02
really good period of Cinema so I would I would say um yeah glad Gladiator and and my Feelgood film things we've had a
1:09:07
few of those and I don't disagree with any of the ones you said is Happy Gilmore yeah it's a good it's a good sh
1:09:13
I haven't watched that in ages uh I watched it last year and it was just like this is amazing it's by far and I
1:09:19
do like Adam sand actually some of his films but he does make some TSH though as well didn't he he does make some
1:09:24
absolute t which is why but in all honesty though even the Tosh it's like for one watch it's still watchable yeah
1:09:31
it's like um what is it um Hubie Halloween I haven't seen that one but the longest yard I've watched that so
1:09:37
many times when I was at Uni cuz I only had a SE small selection of films yeah back when they on DVD and you didn't have downloads um and yeah love that
1:09:45
film from him thought it was really good what was that one was it Billy Billy Madison yeah yeah that was really good
1:09:51
but yeah it was just one of those that yeah I I don't know that period of Adam Sandler around what was it late '90s
1:09:56
that was just big daddy exactly all those Mr Deeds Mr de Mr Deeds I love the
1:10:03
butler in that one withney sneaky sneaky I sneaky yeah and he's actually been in
1:10:09
quite a few films like he brilliant I really like him as a as a as an actor
1:10:14
cool all right let's go around again then this time I want to know your favorite video games so mine is the one
1:10:22
that always sticks out at the top oh always Final Fantasy 7 it's just I have
1:10:28
such vivid memories of ff7 of teenager PlayStation one was it come out 96 997
1:10:35
something like that ah the hours have ped to that game comes on free discs how
1:10:41
excited the game comes on three discs and just getting lost in the characters I mean when you look at this game now it
1:10:46
look [ __ ] cuz it's all blocky in it it's all the characters like cloud and Barrett and and everyone's all blocky
1:10:52
and obviously they remade it recently which I have not played the Remake cuz it's a PlayStation but I just have such
1:10:59
a soft spot for that game just yeah been in the bedroom playing it hours and hours hundreds of hours on that thing
1:11:05
loved it so that one's always to the top but I think the game that I kind of remember growing up um loving is Zelda
1:11:13
linked to the Past on the SNES that again just love that game just classic
1:11:19
brilliant dungeons little puzzles loving it there you go that's me I was just thinking through all the games I really
1:11:25
enjoy so if we're talking about retro games Streets of Rage was fantastic the
1:11:31
music oh there one that's the best one now is it two yes was my favorite the
1:11:38
soundtrack on two was ridiculously good so good three was good as well like but
1:11:43
yeah couple you played Four no yeah I've played Four it stands up Four's good it does stand up it's really good um yeah I
1:11:50
played lots of cities City of Heroes the MMO um kind of came came out before World of Warcraft and really um enjoyed
1:11:59
that and I suppose the other big game that I just ped lots of well two other games I pulled lots of time into one was
1:12:05
um Vegas 2 Rainbow 6 Vegas 2 yeah I was so [ __ ] of that same here I loved that
1:12:12
game and there were certain tricks which meant you could do no scoping around corners quite quite convincingly quite
1:12:17
easy um and then pretty much the whole Splinter Cell series there's only a few of those I haven't played and yet all of
1:12:24
them I've loved when I grew up you were either Metal Gear Solid or Splinter Cell it felt like you know that tribalism and
1:12:31
I was one of the very few kids in my school and sort of college and all that lot that really loved Splinter Cell and
1:12:36
then by the time it came around to conviction and the end ones I still was really enjoying what it was trying to do
1:12:42
yeah thought it was really good and then kind of Hitman after that very similar feel very similar Vibes it gave me and
1:12:48
just I've poured hours into Hitman 2 and three fair so yeah don't know that I've
1:12:53
got a favorite but kind poured time into an enjoyed point I'm not asking for one it's too difficult curly well good job
1:13:00
you're not asking for one because I'd be really struggling so um if you I'm going to do an honorable mention for World of
1:13:06
Warcraft cuz it's probably the game that I've played the most over the years like I can't even tell you I mean thousands
1:13:11
of hours I mean in a year do you know what I mean like a lot of time I've spend on that game but I don't play it
1:13:17
anymore so I kind of don't know if I can count that one anymore but honorable mentioned back in the day World of
1:13:23
Warcraft um but other than that I would say games that I still play really the franchises of is I'm really struggling
1:13:29
between two three really uh civilization generally just I've initially started
1:13:35
playing it with number three back in God 2000 something like that um and I've played all the iterations since so
1:13:41
absolutely play the hell out of four five and current one six and the new one's just been announced so hopefully
1:13:49
sort of early to middle of next year we'll get civilization 7 um so yeah big
1:13:54
not to one and then um Total War Warhammer the series of those uh and that's more recent um you know they only
1:14:02
started releasing those a few years ago and yeah they've been a revelation for me ever since I never played Total War Games before that and uh yeah absolutely
1:14:09
love those yeah can't get enough of them um but apart from that um I would say Modern Warfare 3 was the one that I
1:14:16
played a lot good shooter yeah yeah yeah I played that one and for anyone who's played those sorts of games I used to
1:14:23
play um Team Deathmatch a lot and I had a two kdr which I was proba quite proud of if you don't know what that means ignore me kill to death ratio kill death
1:14:29
ratio yeah so yeah killing two people for everyone might not sound like much but it was good at the time but yeah I
1:14:34
was pretty good at Modern Warfare fair enough fair enough great well you were show off your 2kd barely had a one I had
1:14:42
a 0.001 crap it yeah I used I used to be a horrible get with a sniper mate I
1:14:48
shouldn't take you I don't take too much pride in it uh me my favorite game of all time is the older SCS five Skyrim to
1:14:56
the point where I've now obviously scarred my body permanently with it for tattoos and things um so yeah that's
1:15:02
I've put so so so many hours of my life into that game and every time there's a
1:15:08
big bunch of mods that go on I then loop back to it and then I play it another for another couple of hundred hours um
1:15:14
so yeah that's probably my favorite game of all time but yeah so then then we've going back again um I did play a lot of
1:15:22
um World of Warcraft as well um think burning CR is when I joined um which is probably one of my favorite ones cuz I
1:15:27
keep playing they all local sort of hosted servers of that I go back to that area soft and randomly load up a new
1:15:34
character for a couple of hundred hours and then get distracted by something shiny and go do something else um but
1:15:39
more recently I just I've fallen utterly and deeply in love with uh Space Marine 2 it's so good it's just probably one of
1:15:47
the best games I've ever played um I'm just stuck into whenever I find myself with half an hour of time I'm I'm just
1:15:52
going to put the Xbox on darling and be back a little bit and then I played for like 3 hours and that's my day gone um I
1:15:59
love it it's visceral quite tactical at times it's i' when I first started playing it it's just your classic hack
1:16:04
and slash it's really not on the hard of difficulties you need to time everything quite carefully um which is nice which
1:16:12
Rob is having a hard time figuring out it's hilarious the rage he gets into is
1:16:18
is is quite funny and try to hold up T it's okay just take a Brea there you'll
1:16:23
be you'll be fine quit the other day he did with Tambo yeah he T was like oh we're going to do this and Rob just died
1:16:30
and then he just all right that's it I'm off and just left the game and Tam was like where have you gone I'm not playing
1:16:36
anymore Rob um it was it was funny I'll tell you what I have honorable mention cuz obviously I say old games didn't I
1:16:42
I'm actually really really enjoying Boulders Gate 3 which has surprised the crap out of me it is great because I
1:16:49
just did not think I would enjoy it that much and I'm I'm in it I am in it now I'm like want to play it but yeah had to
1:16:57
say curly rled his eyes at that I played that for a couple of hours
1:17:02
and was like that's too much for me it's very technical I was really lost I was like so I could go down this route this
1:17:08
route this route or this route but there's nothing really telling me which which one's better or which one's worse and I was just like there's too much
1:17:14
options [ __ ] off don't don't min max it just just play it it don't matter just whatever um cool there we go look we
1:17:21
could probably talk forever about ourselves and stuff but I thought it'd be quite nice change of pace just to kind of turn the light on us a little
1:17:28
bit hopefully get to know us a little bit more about what we're about what we like outside of the board gaming but
1:17:33
don't worry we'll be back with board gaming Shenanigans very [Music]
TURN 4 - Would you rather...wipe your mind to experience your favourite films, games all over again at the cost of 2 years exit of the board game hobby...or not
1:17:47
soon so we're back with our would you rather of the episode so I'm I've got a bit of a weird one for you so
1:17:55
I'm going to offer you it's bit like Total Recall right so there's this little company down the road that offers
1:18:01
you some memory wiping Services Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind that's it
1:18:06
yeah that's a better analogy so they're going to offer you some memory wiping services at the cost of uh basically you
1:18:13
have to exit out the board gaming hobby for two years that's the price and the
1:18:19
point of the wada is would you wipe your memory of all your favorite films and
1:18:24
games and all the things that we've been talking about so that you could revisit them AR fresh for the first time I've
1:18:32
never seen these things before or not basically or just carry on on your Merry way do not go into that
1:18:38
shop do not mess with my mind off your go obviously it's safe it's not some dodgy back alley job it's safe safe shop
1:18:45
it's been tested it's all good what would you rather do so I've changed tack on this
1:18:51
one I tell you why because I I I took from what you you said was computer
1:18:56
games which I absolutely would not because I don't like learning new computer games piss me off but the idea
1:19:04
of being able to rewatch some of my favorite films Lord of the Rings I just yeah I'd have to do it I'd have to do it
1:19:11
cuz you haven't seen it before right I've never seen it before never seen it before the first time I watched Lord of the Rings I watched it six times at the
1:19:16
cinema when it first came out you really yeah yeah yeah not even exaggerating like I went once on my own like twice on
1:19:23
my older brother twice on my younger brother yeah I just absolutely love it so yeah
1:19:29
probably worth it I just watched films for two years welcome to mind wipe that's you done all right Adrian
1:19:36
yeah I I wouldn't get mind WIP because one of the things I was just thinking of then is I would worry that I wouldn't
1:19:42
watch the films that I love now because of the fact that you have watched these things before because well so like if I
1:19:49
think about like Enemy of the State I watched a load and you know mentioned in
1:19:54
60 seconds and stuff like that if I had my mind wiped and just here you go here's all the films that you used to watch and here's all the films that are
1:20:01
now out I'd probably spend my entire like two years just watching like oppenheim like I've not watched and and
1:20:07
films that I haven't watched that I've wanted to get to for ages where I just feel like I don't have the time at the moment so I probably wouldn't watch the
1:20:13
films that I loved originally and I'm quite happy to have just experienced it the once now get the Nostalgia kick out
1:20:18
of it of watching it again or the familiarity that warm blanket and just still get to play board games so I think
1:20:25
that's the way I'm going to go with it okay walking past the Mind wipe shop what about you
1:20:31
Chrissy I would be worried that if I had my mind wiped that I wouldn't enjoy the
1:20:39
films and stuff again like I did back then I I don't know if i' I would I've changed since then I don't know if I if
1:20:47
I went to watch you know I say like the original Iron Man or something again for the F for the very first time you know
1:20:52
with the bunny ear fingers cuz my mind's been WIP um I don't know if I'd enjoy it and that
1:20:58
would be that would worry me obviously I wouldn't know about it that's that's the that's the Croc
1:21:05
there isn't it what I would I care that's a paradox created a paradox here go down the Back to the Future style
1:21:11
like exactly um no I'll I'll walk past there's too much that I enjoy that much
1:21:18
there's too too many yeah too much implication for mistake that I I I know what I like and I'm going to keep liking
1:21:24
it and I don't want a possibility of accidentally changing myself by doing something bad and wiping
1:21:31
myself take the how you I have my nurse do that for me yeah I was going to say I
1:21:36
like it when you wipe yourself um you do you got absolutely I yeah I'm going to
1:21:42
go for the wiping um because like two years from the hobby it it would be quite painful but you could always
1:21:49
return and just think of all the releases that have come out oh look all this stuff I can play um but I'd like to
1:21:55
and I'm going off the I'm ignoring your will I feel the same about it cuz it's a good point but s it I'm just going to go
1:22:01
I want to I want to like relive all those films again I want to relive all those things again and just see how it
1:22:07
goes just because it's it's a massive unknown but what the hell what the hell
1:22:13
I'm in wipe it wipe me baby wipe you baby yes
1:22:18
sir right the way would you like the moist toets or the always from KFC yeah
1:22:25
sandpaper lemon flameon on oh [Music]
TURN 5 - Penultimate Turn: What's Coming Up
1:22:36
God okay we're now onto our penultimate turn where we're going to talk about what we're looking forward to I'm just
1:22:42
going to very quickly say for me I'm looking forward to Essen and at the point of this episode being released
1:22:49
will either be about to go to Essen in Essen or coming back from Essen
1:22:56
because I can't remember exactly when this is going out but I don't think we've talked about Essen really on our
1:23:01
previous episode mainly because of the uh the massive uh recording gaps that we've had um but yeah just looking
1:23:08
forward to I cannot believe it's what weaken a bit weaken a bit that's mad I've not even really thought about this
1:23:14
the only two you messaged me the other day Adrian and went have you been I've got my um you know the kind of top games
1:23:20
I want to check out during the show I'm have not even thought about it yet and then I have watched videos and now I
1:23:25
have a list so thank you for that uh so I feel like I'm mildly prepared but then I'm not like last year I I winged it
1:23:33
I'll be honest I kind of went I didn't know what to expect of Essen anyway and
1:23:38
um I just I was just happy to just be there and just experience it but at least now I have an idea and I can kind
1:23:44
of understand the the gravity of it and and how it will work so yeah I do have a list but no I'm just I can't wait to
1:23:50
have the trip it's be good fun and obviously it is this will be my main
1:23:55
holiday of the year so yeah so you know it's good to get away and uh and and that's what I'm
1:24:02
looking forward to yeah yeah so I think I said this about the Expo as well is that about a month or so before I was
1:24:09
like I this feel like a lot of effort to be going through for these events and all that lot and then like two weeks ahead of time I'm like I can't wait this
1:24:17
is going to be the best time ever um and I'd started like doing a bit of research
1:24:23
but some of the games really weren't announced until very recently yeah true and I had the experience last year where
1:24:30
I both picked up Satori and far away and I had to queue up and wait for people
1:24:36
not to have picked up their pre-orders to see what's left that I could buy so I was queing for like an hour each for
1:24:41
those games and far Satori like I've played a couple of times it's good I'm
1:24:47
glad I've got it it's not the best game in the world but far away I've had a great time with and I think the fact
1:24:52
that everyone in the group seems to now have a copy suggest that it it was a good purchase sort of thing at the time
1:24:58
and I just didn't want to be stuck in that situation again so I was like I'm going to do all my prep and I pre-ordered two games and I went to
1:25:05
pre-order a third and it was already sold out like and this was like two weeks ago so so three and a half weeks
1:25:11
beforehand the big game that I was like I want to make sure I pick this up and they'll have more copies there they said
1:25:17
but for pre-order purposes it's already sold out and I was like I can't believe I'm 3 weeks ahead of the game compared
1:25:23
to where last year I was working out two days before I was I can't believe I'm this far ahead and I've managed to get
1:25:28
most pre-orders in but not all of them for what I want so yeah I'm really looking forward to it I think there's
1:25:33
going to be plenty there now I was when again like a month ago the games I knew
1:25:39
of that were out were not my cup of tea and I was like I don't know what I'm
1:25:44
going to get out of this show and then since then there's been a lot more games that have been announced as available or
1:25:51
demo at at Essen um that now I'm quite stoked and I've got my pre-order some of
1:25:56
my pre-orders in and all that thought so yeah super excited for that and we will have talked a little bit more about what we're looking forward to on the gaming
1:26:04
rules um I think it's going to be a podcast or a YouTube channel I think he's doing YouTube streaming yeah um so
1:26:10
there's a few of us um content creator types um most of them a lot more popular
1:26:16
than us well known there's a few content creators and US yeah basically um who
1:26:23
are going on to talk about just a couple of games we're really looking forward to there and just having a chat about that as well as of course as Paul um will be
1:26:29
hosting it and talking about his as well so again this might come out before or after either way check it out and you'll
1:26:35
get a bit of a flavor as to kind of what those games are that we're interested in we'll put a link in the show notes for it
1:26:41
is great curly so um I've got a game of treron coming up oh seems like uh yeah
1:26:50
it's quite a few times I've said that but one of my favorite alltime games so yeah so really really looking forward to that I got that in a week so we're done
1:26:56
yeah we're done um yeah I haven't got very much in the calendar at the moment so I was a little bit struggling on this one so I thought you know what next week
1:27:03
trick arion's pretty much my next game so yeah looking forward to that one I doubt we played Dow Gods but which is a
1:27:09
shame yeah yeah tell him grade him come on I'll tell him I'll even teach it if
1:27:16
he wants yeah it's not that bad as we know definitely not chy
1:27:21
P so apart from the random little board game here and there over the next few weeks um completely unrelated to board
1:27:29
games I'm finally getting carpet in my downstairs dining room for the first
1:27:34
time in 2 years I've been walking on floorboards for 2 years because we've been decorating the rest of the room
1:27:39
doing skirting and everything putting in the fireplace all that fun stuff expensive though is it it's expensive
1:27:45
and I've had to do it in between when I've actually had any money so it's like oh I'll do something then 6 months later I'll do another thing and then but
1:27:51
finally we're on the cusp we've ordered the carpet it's coming it's on its way
1:27:56
and I'm so excited I'm such a grownup now it's brilliant always it's great when you get a new carpet it's fresh
1:28:02
fresh yeah and they're spongy it's it's going to be just
1:28:08
yeah clip it no I'm keeping it in as in as I want that
1:28:15
back um but no yeah it's going to be amazing I'm so looking forward to it to walk into a room that looks finished
1:28:21
yeah rather than it's going it's a there all floorboards it's
1:28:26
all yeah it's bit like my living room there's a big section of carpet that's been removed from the old owners where
1:28:33
they had a media center and a bit of skirting that's removed and it you don't really notice it cuz the chairs there
1:28:40
but I know it's there and it's annoying it drives you mad and I can't I'm in a similar position I'm waiting to just get
1:28:46
some funds together and we'll get the carpets done but it's yeah just I know it's down I look at it and go but anyway
1:28:54
when we moved into an old house they had painted round the Christmas tree so they like yes we moved in in January we saw
1:29:00
the house in December and it was all looking freshly painted and of course you don't like look all that and then
1:29:08
literally we moved in and there was a triangle shape you kind of why the hell that was the where the Christmas tree
1:29:13
was when we went around and saw it they've painted but not moved the Christmas tree they've just quickly painted around the Christmas tree and
1:29:20
yeah that stood that stayed in our house for way too long that's mental um but yeah it is one of those where we put a
1:29:26
thing in front of it it's like but I know that it's like unpainted behind it yeah anyway this has turned into DIY
TURN 6 - The Final Turn
