Whose Turn Is It Anyway?
Episode 59: Big fish, little fish, cardboard box
It's your turn...to click here to send us your comments on the show
Chris wraps up his run by diving deep into when games get storage solutions right...or so very very wrong.
FIRST PLAYER: Chris
OTHER PLAYERS: Kerley, Becky & JP
In this episode you'll learn:
- how Fire Tower by Goliath Games fuels aggro behaviour in kids
- that Nucleum from Board & Dice gets a second shot at redemption with JP and stays in the collection
- that Kerley actually likes a roll & write game (well a draft & write) in Draft & Write Records by Inside Up Games
- about Chris' continuation of Skyrim: The Adventure Game by Modiphius Entertainment
- on when publishers get inserts right and when they don't included some of our examples
- Kerley's unorthodox storage method akin to storing DVD's in the wrong case...cue sick noises

hi and welcome to who's turn is anyway a podcast about our gaming group and of course board games I'm Chris P resident
0:44
kitchen equipment and your current first player and I'm joined by other players JP hello Becky hi and curlyy hello how
0:51
are we all doing today really good thanks pretty good pretty knacked pretty knacked just came back from feeling like
0:59
I've been in the washing machine ma which is of course the sea cuz I've been surfing sea I've been tumbling around in
1:05
the sea trying to Surf and falling over a lot and yeah that's just how I serve
1:10
and where was that that was in Westwood hoe oh which was having this really boring
1:16
conversation before we recorded right it wasn't boring it's very interesting and
1:22
specific Westwood ho is one of the only places in the country that's got punctuation as part of its name true
1:28
it's true and it made it even better for for surfing but is it interestingly true that's the big question maybe not I
1:34
think so is if you're like the Lexicon you know if you're into the Lexicon then
1:40
fair enough it is interesting isn't it but if you're not car's face says no no he's not he's not into it just wake me
1:46
up when we talk about ball games yeah it's fair generally though I'm all right just I'm a bit like sand blasted you know oh yeah so if I'm asleep later
1:54
that's why love you J lovely
TURN 2 - Let's Talk About Hex
2:05
so let's talk about hex this is where this part of the podcast where we talk about what we've been up to recently
Becky - Fire Tower
2:10
Becky do you want to get us started yeah so it was a rather large birthday of mine 21 again yep lies maybe a little
2:18
bit and lots of people came around which was lovely to see everyone and we played a game of fire tower that was me JP my
2:25
friend Katherine and JP's son Josh I was going to call him Ross then who the hell
2:30
is Ross he's my other son your other son yeah secret son yeah sure secret how did you find him the one you keep in The
2:36
Loft so we yeah we played God we played a game of fire tower which
2:43
um Tambo introduced me to actually and it's a really easy but very fun um I'm
2:49
going to say it's Co-op but it's it it's not meant to be Co-op but it ended up being everyone versus JP although I I
2:54
had his back a little bit he did have my back um you've got a board which has got lots of squares on it and a picture of a fire Tower in each corner and basically
3:02
you're trying to burn everyone else's Tower down whilst maintaining your own so you've got a really beautiful plastic
3:09
um flame in the center of the board you roll a dice at the start to determine the wind direction so every um person's
3:15
turn after that you place one extra Fire Gem in that direction and hopefully it's not towards the direction of your Tower
3:22
then you can play one of a handful of cards you've got which can either um add more flames in a certain configuration
3:27
you can uh fire break which kind of protects your Tower or you can use water to kind of erase some of the Flames so
3:35
what generally happens is a couple of people gang up together against everyone else which is exactly what happened here
3:40
my friend Katherine and uh Josh were basically let's burn dad so that's what happened isn't it he took great pleasure
3:47
in trying to eliminate me from the game as fast as possible did but with one good thing about the game that I think
3:52
is really well thought out the first person that is out becomes in like a shadow of the woods and you get to roll
3:59
the um sort of directional Dice and then do a thing so you can basically get back at whoever it was that burn you down
4:05
which is really fun game um yeah the pieces are super super tactile and very very nice to look at and it plays in I
4:12
don't know between 15 to 30 minutes I guess I did buy the expansion but we didn't play with that this time um
4:17
except for the little wooden buckets which are like your kind of Last Chance Saloon yeah get rid of some of need you
4:24
did you needed a couple more than you had I think so yeah as soon as um a bit of flame is in your kind of nine square
4:31
area in your corner you can use your bucket which is your last ditch attempt to get rid of three Flames but to be honest if it's got that far it's
4:37
probably not going to save you to be honest no so yeah we had really good fun playing that really enjoyed good game
4:42
yeah and it surprised me cuz I don't know when you look at it it's like that doesn't look like there's much going on
4:47
but it's it's that table talk it's the banter around the table that you get with that kind of game yeah absolutely
4:52
it's like right this is happening you're like you bastard what are you doing and yeah and this fire spreading around like
4:58
like there's no tomorrow and you're trying to sort it out and then trying to get people back and yeah no it's just good fun I mean like for families it
5:06
it's great like the rules aren't heavy at all no you can just get it like literally in a turn and you're off and
5:12
yeah my son loved absolutely loved it he keeps saying have have we got it yet and I keep forgetting I'm like yeah I
5:17
probably should buy this game because he just wants to keep burning me um my only problem with it is thematically why are
5:24
we trying to burn each other's towers down what's what's what's the story like we're all here and we're trying to burn
5:30
each other like why um rival tribes I I don't know I don't know if it says in in
5:38
the in the rule book actually I didn't I didn't look that deeply into there might
5:43
be some there might be some thematics involved with just we just went how do we play it let's go yeah burn stuff I
5:49
don't care what it's about I'm a pyromaniac yeah it could be all corporations that were trying to you know dominate the woods and be the only
5:55
Corporation left sabotaging each other perhaps yeah just like yeah why are we doing this but it is fun let's burn each
6:01
other it's really good yeah it's really nice so yeah bought the um base game and the expansion when we were at the ukge
6:08
and uh yeah really enjoyed it very very good fun how about you JP what have you been up to what have you been playing
6:14
I've been playing quite a lot actually recently um because I'm about to go on holiday and I've been trying to get as
JP - Nucleum
6:20
many games in as possible um but the one game I want to talk about is nucleum and the reason why I want to
6:27
talk about it is there was a game I was actually going to sell and now I'm
6:33
not so PL twist yeah plot twist I've already ruined it haven't I but for those that don't know what it is nucleum
6:38
is a game that came out in Essen Spiel last year um by bord and dice and signed
6:44
by Simone Lani and David Teri and I played it a few times I I've always
6:51
enjoyed it but then it's just something about that game I just wasn't excited to get it back to the table Can't Tell You
6:56
Why just like there's other things that I'd rather play and it was like should we play nucle can do you know wasn't
7:03
kind of like oh really excited so I just thought you know what I'm going to give it another shake and I kind of not forc
7:09
myself to play that sounds really bad isn't it but kind of put an event up and then as the event kind of got closer I
7:14
actually got got quite you know excited to play it again oh let's play it so I had to relearn it and then we had a game
7:20
and in that game it clicked for me I think it's it's because I I've never was
7:25
really good at it I kind of went through the emotions I think we talked about another episode but went through the
7:31
motions and got to the end and went well that was a thing that's a thing we did um but for those that don't know what it
7:37
is whatsoever it gets compared to Brass a lot because it has train tracks and
7:43
looks similar to Brass but it doesn't play anything like brass at all but you're kind of um trying to build like
7:50
buildings and and link up your Railways uh to to various different power plants
7:55
that are either coal fired or as the game progress nuclear or nucleum um they
8:01
basically nuclear power stations that will generate uh more efficient power sources and you're trying to root power
8:07
and resources to these buildings and all that kind of stuff and that's kind of the Crux of the game but the the clever
8:13
bit for me is that the action tiles are the train tracks and you can buy more
8:19
throughout the game and they have two ends on them so they have an action on the top end and the bottom end and they've got little color Edge which
8:24
means if you play that train track onto the board and you match the col up with
8:29
the cities or other train tracks that are on there you can then do the actions but you lose the ti cuz it's stuck on the board or you can play on your player
8:36
board do both actions but you'll get a tile back so there's a little puzzle there on do do you put it on the board
8:42
cuz that helps you connect links up or do you keep it because it's a really powerful Tire you want to keep spamming
8:48
over and over and over again and yeah it's uh it was great I I loved it and I
8:55
literally played it that game and uh I played it solo learned solo mode so I played it again on solo and then me and
9:01
Rob had a a two player during the World World Cup during the Euro final so we actually tried to get the game done we
9:07
didn't and then we tried to finish it at halftime we didn't and then we had to literally finish the last two turns off
9:14
after so it was all a bit sad because obviously the result was not the way that we wanted it to go um but yeah I I
9:21
really enjoyed that game and it for me it's just reinvigorated it and it's quite nice cuz I expected to sell it
9:28
what did you think was different this time then why me oh okay just different different mindset probably yeah probably
9:35
cuz I I played it like the demo at ESS which is very scripted on Rails demo which which was fine because it like
9:41
this is the game this is how it works um and then that's kind of why I bought it and then I played it again and I know I
9:49
think I probably just drowned in it a little bit and I think the the second play after that I was at gcon yeah did
9:55
pretty to be honest just didn't do well and I don't know how thought maybe it's just not clicking but yeah this one
10:01
it just made sense and maybe just a bit of time away and coming back to it just helped I don't know might be that I fall
10:07
apart in the next play I don't know but it seems to like I kind of get the puzzle a little bit more um so yeah I've
10:13
I've purchased uh the Australia expansion uh which has been out quite a while now bit a few about three or four
10:19
months U which brings a new map in there so a bit more variety twist some of the rules up not not massively but it it
10:25
just adds a bit more flavor um and yeah I'm enjoy enjoying it looking forward to playing more of it so yeah there you go
10:33
yeah so um I've actually had the opposite Journey with nuclear did I just want to point out um but I think again
10:39
same as JP I think that had more to do with me than the actual game um yeah it's an interesting one because I can
10:46
totally agree with JP I think I had a similar game to you last time we played than you had the time before um and I
10:52
think just if you're not in the right mood or you're not in or you're not you don't pick it up quickly the game can
10:57
feel quite disjointed m that's a perfect word for me for how I felt cuz I didn't do that badly no I came third with like
11:05
at least a competitive score um but it just didn't feel like it was flowing very nicely um so yeah that was a really
11:12
interesting one cuz the time before that I absolutely romped it yeah I romped it stampeded everything and it felt really
11:18
smooth and and a lot but I think looking back at it I think that was more a bit of skill but largely luck with the
11:25
decisions I made happened to be the right ones and this time around I decided go down a different tag cuz you
11:30
guys were quite aggressive with the contracts yeah and I thought right they're being super aggressive the good ones are going I'll try something else
11:37
and no you need the contracts like there's just no two ways around it it's just part of the efficiency engine so I
11:43
guess I tried a new way of doing it it went very badly halfway through decided to go down
11:49
the contract room by then it felt too late and I felt like I was a couple of steps behind everyone so it felt it
11:55
wasn't I'll be honest it wasn't a feel-good moment no it was a definitely a feel bad moment but at the same time I
12:02
can kind of figure out where I went wrong now and I'm going to give it another go I was pretty like yeah you
12:08
you were like I'm not playing this again I didn't have a didn't enjoy this it was not a good game for me like I tried to I
12:13
tried to like not let it come across in the actual game but afterwards I was like M yeah yeah I'm not sure that one
12:19
but you know I think I know where I went wrong and I think it's still a really good game I just think that I experimented and it went very badly
12:25
wrong so you know you got to accept that you do those things you're going to get occasionally things with the contracts
12:31
it's not always I mean of course you want to take contracts and fulfill them it's kind of the point right you get VPS and you get like technology that you
12:37
unlock that helps you with your engine and stuff like that but the thing that I keep forgetting in the game is actually
12:43
taking contracts you slot them and the side of your player board and then you choose the slot you'll get either money
12:49
um workers uranium um or some achievement Stars which you use to to kind of help you get up this achievement
12:55
track and just taking them gets you that little trickle of of is it's so important because it tight as
13:02
ass especially early in the game and you're like how do I get I need one more worker cuz I need to put some track out and do this thing I'll take a contract
13:08
put it in there done so linking some of those things and then efficiently bouncing like you know stepping stone to
13:14
Stepping Stone from the contracts and keep them fulfilled and then pushes you in the direction that's yeah that's what
13:20
you need to try and do but it is it's difficult I think the other thing not like game is it no it's not no the other
13:25
thing was and and this is going to sound like sour really but it was like when you're doing like pretty you're having a
13:31
rough start to the game cuz you've you you know you've experimented made a bad decision and then Davey gets like
13:37
literally I don't even know like I was struggling to get five points to get to that first level is five stars and he
13:43
had like 24 and I was like what the hell is going on he he he ran out of steam at the end yeah he did which allowed people
13:49
to catch up and everything else so it's not like it didn't marry up but you know at the start when you're like I just
13:55
can't do anything here and Dave's got like literally the kind of score that you get to Ward the end of the game
14:00
straight away and it's like oh my God right you said that comment which was yeah it doesn't feel good when the other
14:06
players are really romping ahead and doing well and then I think I responded in an unhelpful manner which was welcome
14:11
to my world which is when we play against you mate to be to be fair I think I commented back that you don't do as bad
14:18
as you bloody make out you do now I'd understand it like if I whipped your ass all the time and there are some players
14:23
not naming any names that I do probably whip most of the time but you are not one of them I have my moment so i' i'
14:28
let other people have that comment but yeah it's nice to see you're human yeah do you know what I mean robot it did it
14:36
did feel very humanizing I can but I'm glad you're going to give it another shot though yeah I will
14:41
definitely cool no it's interesting that you've gone from I'm just about to probably get rid of this game to the point of go she enjoyed it I'm going to
14:46
buy an expansion for it it's weird yeah I just well wait wait JP bought an expansion but he never buys the expansion I forgot about that no he
14:52
doesn't does he no this the thing with this is like I I thought I don't know if I'm interested enough yeah and I and the
14:59
expansion came out and I didn't instantly buy it because if I'm going to sell it I don't want to buy something
15:05
I'm going to sell you know um but yeah so and then I played it and loved it again s it I'm in yeah you know you know
15:12
what's weird though is the fact of when you were selling it I was like I'm going to buy that off him when he sells it now
15:17
now you've decided you want it and I don't want it any it's all worked out in the end and it means I got more money in
15:22
my pocket and I can play it whenever I like cuz JP's got it I'm still going to keep it for now I mean who knows in the future but yeah I'm enjoying it at the
15:28
moment so yeah why not that's me cool thank you well done glad you uh managed
15:34
to buy some more things to add your collection yeah it's fun curly what have you been up to um so this is not going
15:42
to be the most eloquent uh description of a game but uh because I've only played it the once but it was draft and
Kerley - Draft & Write Records
15:47
right records which I played at Becky's uh 40th birthday party not supposed to
15:53
drop that in I'm just saying you know you said 21 I'm not letting you have that I said 21 a bit just a really
16:01
really big bit um so yeah so I played it at Becky's birthday um and it was a bit of a
16:08
surprise hit because I don't usually like writing games any draft and rights
16:14
rolling rights anything like that I think it was looking back I think because most of them have to do with
16:19
shapes and I don't like Puzzles with shapes like Puzzles I mean the only one
16:24
that I found acceptable that I that I enjoyed um but was still a little bit against me was um The Mill Meadows mole
16:31
hill Meadows that's it um yeah so I really enjoyed that so Chris well on I think Chris should have on the box even
16:37
one curly round exactly even Curly from The who's turn anyway podcast loved it yeah and then they'll go who is that
16:44
that that is a bloody an Accolade isn't it for that kind of game it is but no it was really good fun um basically you're
16:51
going through the the game and you get a sheet that of your own which is nice and you get all these different colored pencils which is also as a feel good as
16:57
well doesn't like color exactly and the whole idea is is that you are um drafting a hand of cards and then you
17:03
take the one you want pass it to the left and the next time you pass it to the right so it's all the stuff that we're used to with drafting games um and
17:10
the idea is you're trying to complete parts of your own little band so you've got like your band um members which you
17:17
know all the classic people and you're kind of putting the different people in from different cards but you've also got the backstage people you've got the
17:23
system set up and stuff like that um you've got promotional things and you've got a tour and
17:29
yeah so it's basically balancing do I take a card that adds a member of the band that I need but then they've got a different color on them which is maybe
17:36
not what I need CU you have to marry up the corners it's it's a nice little puzzle where you're marrying up the
17:41
little um the colored parts of all the different network that you've got there as well as ticking off different areas
17:47
and collecting sets and lines and yeah it just it felt it felt fun so I'm not
17:53
you know I'm not going into the detail there are bits absolutely I will have missed but it felt fun so anyone who's
18:00
interested in kind of like the um the writing games what do we call that genre
18:05
not rolling rights it's not yeah but obviously it's a draft and right really isn't it but yeah so anyone who likes
18:10
rolling rights then um I definitely recommend giving the uh drafting cards variant ago because it was a lot more
18:18
fun for me um but yeah so yeah big big Kudos I played it on um board game arena
18:25
which I think was really I played a solo mode so I didn't do lot you know there was no kind of passing to the left
18:30
passing to the right kind of stuff but I think there is lots of symbology on there and it is very very very intuitive
18:37
I will say I think it was really good for me to play on the computer first because it kind of highlights where you
18:42
could go where that symbol is or or isn't so that was quite a helpful thing to oh I could put it over on the release
18:48
an album or release a single and and kind of build that track up because it's got the same little color dot whereas I
18:53
might have missed that on an actual sheet so I think maybe a couple of games on a computer if you are sort of
18:59
struggling with oh there's too many little colored circles or whatever play on a computer once just to get your sort
19:05
of eye in and then I think that really helps with knowing how the game works yeah and it's it's quite good as well
19:11
because on BGA if you've already got a subscription of course um I don't know whether they've always done it but I didn't know that they did it is that you
19:17
can just play solo like you did it was really good so you can just give it a try and see if you'd like it you know so if you've already got a boy BGA
19:23
subscription then Happy Days just give it a go um it is relatively new out in the last couple of months I think it's
19:29
yeah I think so they're certainly still advertising it and and I know it's relatively new so but my my best score
19:34
was the first one I played the second and the third times was absolutely pants comparatively I was like but but but I
19:40
know the game better now how can it be worse but it what did I do yeah but yeah but um yeah big thanks to Stuart enu who
19:48
brought it and um yeah taught us so well what have you been doing then chrisy uh
19:53
so I've recently managed to finish the Dark Brotherhood um expansion sorry not
Chris P - Skyrim Dark Brotherhood Mini Campaign
19:59
expansion the mini campaign for the Skyrim board game obviously based on the actual video game o dark finally yeah so
20:06
it's taking about two or three sessions with me and my friend um just doing a two-player Co-op um one of it which has
20:13
been really good um to the end we've kind of been playing it sort of semi- cooperatively throughout the whole time
20:19
because normally it's like you just go around and do your own thing get your own upgrades level up Etc kill big crabs
20:24
and things like that big crabs big oversized crabs okay I just checking I heard the big crabs big crabs skeletons
20:32
you know zombies dragons you know take your pick they're all there they're all there but honest I'd rather have a big
20:37
crab than a little crab you rather have big crabs than little crabs yeah just one big crab yeah just goodness when you
20:46
this is going weird now you know where you are with one big crab yeah you know where it is yeah it's fine you can pop
20:51
into the side for where to go and then put back yeah anyway was anyway leading
20:57
back um so yeah the last two assassins that we've been taking out or trying to take out were ridiculously hard to the
21:04
point where they have to is there one big crab that's what doing they just an
21:10
Assassin's gar it's brilliant um but no so they've got a trait called Ambush
21:16
which basically means if you don't sneak up on them they immediately hit you they they sneak up on you and Ambush you um
21:23
but their base damage is literally all of your health unless you've got the right type of armor just like and I
21:29
found the Assassin I need to kill him I didn't sneak and I'm dead well that worked let's try again later So eventually we got to the point where we
21:35
decided that we both have to meet up at the same town at the same time and then try to fight them together to the point
21:41
where either I would succeed on this the sneak test or my mate would and then go from there so it took a few goes
21:48
literally about an an evening to just defeat two people um but it worked well in the end so yeah finally that's done
21:54
now so we can move on to the undead campaign now which would be great fun I did really enjoy it to be honest I have you played it JP got yeah yeah me and
22:01
Rob did the I it's tutorial or the first opening scenario yeah it was good fun yeah it's like as he explained it is
22:09
like Skyrim is quite it's more on the relaxing side like it's quite a chill
22:14
game where you're you're kind of doing stuff leveling up wandering around and yeah it feels very Skyrim like you know
22:21
yeah you can OB Do Your Own Thing is oh I'm going to go in a dungeon today I might do a quest I want a follow her go
22:26
around and do whatever you want to yeah I I would describe it as a very chilled game at no point did go oh God what am I
22:32
going to do now yeah oh my brain It's really hurting now it's like you just want to sit down and it's like what we call like a a beer in pretzels game it's
22:39
that you can just have bit like hopo isn't it it's like you can have a bit of a laugh you roll some dice you do some
22:44
things and it's yeah and it doesn't take an absolute age to play everything you
22:49
know and you kind of get this thing done and it's quite nice it's a weird comparison but I played it a similar
22:55
time for the first time as The Witcher ball game and I think the ball game is very highly rated comparative to it but
23:01
I preferred Skyrim definitely tell me about the combat system with Witcher I didn't like with the whole like drawing
23:07
cards and then I I forget exactly what it was I only played it once 24 game
23:12
marathon but I didn't enjoy it I didn't find it fun so yeah but part of that was
23:17
like we were playing a four player as well which people have said don't play a four player it's just too long it was
23:22
squeezed in as well cuz we had the um live gaming event of the 24-hour ball game marathon so
23:29
good experience either but I yeah I I was I didn't approach it negatively and I definitely didn't enjoy it as much for
23:35
sure so I came out of that going Skyrim yeah I much prefer that yeah that's fair I think for me The Witcher EDG is it um
23:42
just mechanically but uh I haven't played it Cooperative cooperatively
23:48
because I'd like to because the Witcher is is very semi Coop and it's a Race So it's got that thing of I'm doing my
23:54
thing going around hunting monsters and oh I've won what oh was that it
24:00
yeah so it has that kind of as soon as you get I can't remember to wish it was that quick yeah it's not that quick cuz
24:05
it's even two player takes a good three hours I would say um but yeah it's it's
24:11
that thing it just ends whereas Skyrim is I'm sure it's it's kind of a
24:17
similar thing when you get to a certain conclusion but I can't remember if you both have to kind of finish the the
24:22
scenario in the right order or is it like a race thing still I really can't remember so if you're playing the actual base Campa
24:29
then yes you have to both finish a certain area you have to end in a town or in a certain a certain loc or
24:35
something yeah then yes that's when you stop and then you move on to the next sort of book or whatever is and all the next s of series of quests um but for
24:42
the mini campaign it's basically a free room do whatever you want as long as you complete the goal at the end in this
24:48
case it was defeat 10 assassins okay um so and they just randomly turn up you every time you get to a town you roll a
24:54
dice and you have a one in three chance the Assassin can turn up okay so that's fine you could do it if you really plow
24:59
through you could probably do it in like in two evenings maybe and just get it done it took us more because this last
25:05
assassin the last two was just literally nightmare fuel um and they couldn't couldn't deal with them and I'm dead
25:11
great I'll come back later July it was awful so yeah that's that nice yeah I I think the big one actually thinking
25:17
about it was the downtime on Witcher which is only going to be more worse on a four player but it felt like it was
25:23
like 30 minutes between turns and it was just like looking around going on it is
25:29
bad on that oh honestly it was it was too much for me it's like the event and now I'm going to read a story and this
25:35
is on everyone else's turn and it has because it's got nothing to do with you yeah you're just like just s blank out for a bit it's my
25:42
turn now yeah yeah yeah so it was it was scker for sure and like we did it Co-op
25:48
and it felt like even when he was doing something we were both involved in the story you know so yeah makes sense
25:54
doesn't sound like witch's one for me unless gal's playing then I'd think I'd probably manage to pay attention long
26:00
only be in the bathtub and then he'll get the components all wet not bothered about bath that's all
26:07
right you know Becky take him any which way yeah bathtub or no to be honest with you there's no way I'll be having em
26:13
caval in his Gerald outfit anywhere near Becky no if it's I mean I would stand a chance but it's not Henry C that I fancy
26:19
it's never the person it's always the character I'm going to get you a geralt wig the White Witch over there I'm going
26:27
to get sorry just curly with a cloak on it's the cloak that I like isn't it that's my thing silver hair I think you
26:33
know I love you dear but a cloak might be a push I remember do you remember when we were getting married
26:39
you wanted me to dress up as Mr Darcy I mean that was an idea a long time ago I mean I wouldn't say no obviously but
26:45
Regency style would have been cool anyway I refused to wear those white pants that could obviously uh they're
26:50
not white they're tan I think you'll find with riding well in either case they're flipping you know they always
26:55
tuck up one side of the old uh it's not that business your ass I'm worried about your ass with the color oh well that's
27:02
true it's like what's that brown stain on his back you've just ruined a fantasy
27:07
right that's it no more Mr Darcy thank you I think you'd look lovely in
27:15
[Music]
TURN 3 - Main Event: Big Fish, Little Fish, Cardboard Box
27:24
them so now we can move on to the main turn so sometimes you have to deal with
27:29
what you've been given so maybe some things don't quite fit the way you'd like or like myself you just need
27:35
everything to be neat and tidy today we're talking about original box versus storage options I don't have a massive
27:41
collection of games so I can only speak on my limited personal experience of what I've seen obviously when I've gone
27:47
to other game nights and things um so I'd like to go over a few games with you guys um for what you've seen or
27:54
obviously what you own where the original box is perfect or near perfect so like when you've unpopped everything
27:59
you've unwrapped all the cards you've taken all the bits of the cardboard out and got all the figures Etc everything has to go back in that
28:06
box when it's finished what a game that everything just it fits it's nicely it's done it's all packed away once you're
28:12
done with it or you haven't got to go out and buy something else for it what's a game that fits that I've I've got one
Eclipse 2nd Edition Faction Trays
28:20
here and I and I think JP's going to get in with it as well so I'm going to get in there first go on then I think the
28:26
best game original game I've I've ever seen is definitely Eclipse that's the
28:31
one for me where they've thought about everything um you can literally what is it I remember shut up and sit down did
28:38
their review and they went this this game has like 70 components per person this how many and you know how long it
28:44
takes up bam bam bam bam done I mean it's not quite that easy in reality but they're making the point you know it's
28:50
it's designed to go away perfectly and be really practical as well the only the
28:57
only complaint I've got about it is the giant space egg in the middle actually came a little bit damaged cuz that's the
29:02
one thing that isn't really adequately protected in its box on the side isn't it yeah that's the that's the only thing
29:09
they missed but I assume they either didn't think of it or didn't have an adequate solution they could think of
29:14
but apart from that perfect it fixed perfectly well with a bit of superglue yeah but even fix even as I was popping
29:20
that game and sorting it out I was in awe of the amazing sort of thought
29:26
behind each players's sort of the organization of all their pieces like you say there's loads of bits absolutely
29:32
loads but everything is so intuitive normally when I'm popping games and kind of setting them up I have to keep
29:37
looking at the sort of the manual to say okay do these bits go together can I put them in the same baggie there was none
29:42
of that with this game is absolutely Flawless and it uses every single bit of space as well it's so like efficient
29:48
it's really impressive I've got one to add to that I think Septima the deluxe
Septima Deluxe Box
29:54
edition I can't I can't sort of comment on the regular edition cuz I have never even seen it but the deluxe is it Deluxe
30:00
or collector's edition the one I bought from um Essen anyway that puts away so
30:07
beautifully they really have thought of everything I know people kicked off a little bit about how the um potions fit
30:13
in I don't know what they're moaning about you just touch the bottom of the potion bottle and and the top bit pops
30:18
up you pick it up I some of them don't flip up as as easier as others and it
30:23
might be down to certain print runs of of or say print runs but
30:29
mine is fine I I don't know what people are winging about but some people Wing about anything w't they in think some
30:34
people don't use the potions I think that was the big one because when you went you use the potion you just poke it down it just pops up straight away yeah
30:41
and I don't know if if people are doing that or my only problem with that tray it's getting really specific now my only
30:46
problem with that tray isn't the fact that the things pop up or down is that the cardboard overlay onto the potions
30:53
tray doesn't sit in it properly it I was going to stick it down but I was a little bit kind of hangs out only a
31:00
little bit but yeah I was going to I think a tiny bit of blue tag would have be problem solved with that but that
31:06
sort of system um and I think they did actually get uh is it game tray to
31:12
actually do it but it's beautiful it's a work of art and they have the lovely little kind of exploded schematic
31:17
diagram as to how to put it back and I love one of them I love one of those you got you got to have one honestly like so
31:23
frustrating I don't need it now cuz I'm just so good you might not do but like the amount of time
31:28
I think it was was it Ani I was trying to put away I'm like I have no idea I don't know I don't know but I don't know
31:34
how any of this goes away and it didn't have any sort of inst Tetris music is in the back of your
31:40
mind where's this go we got there in the end but it took about three times as long as it should have done probably so
31:46
doesn't like sh you put in like three quarters of it and you go oh crap I've still got all of this to go in I'll take it all out again start again put back
31:52
again it's like when you've been camping not that I go camping anymore ever but trying to get your tent back into the original packet just don't just don't
31:58
even bother it's not going to happen burn it just just chck ITN yeah a big elastic band instead
Dice Forge Horizontal Only Insert
32:06
what's what's your favorite one then JP unless you were going to say eclips I wasn't actually no I wasn't going to say eclip um it didn't ping to my mind but
32:13
you are absolutely right it's a fantastic layout system should we call it that um for me the one that just
32:20
instantly jumped to the the top of my head was dice Forge right that's beautiful yeah the dice Forge is the you
32:26
know the Lego game you replace the faces the dice all that kind of stuff the the insert in that that you get out of the
32:33
box is is bloody fantastic unless you're storing it vertically um which like a
32:38
Heen like a heathen I don't so I don't care so it's fine don't come ATS with
32:43
I'm sure we'll get to that later yeah and it's just it you know it's just very thoughtful everything has a place even
32:50
the little minute components of I don't know what they are the little hammers that you get for for a certain car
32:55
everything just goes where it needs to the brilliant thing about that game is the box is also a component in itself
33:01
because of the way that the the tiles lay on top of it and it all kind of extends into the border from a thematic
33:08
artwork persp I mean they've thought about everything and it's uh yeah it's really clever and uh I appreciate that
33:15
it means you don't need to do anything you've got the game it works you know what I love about dice Forge what is that sleeve oh where you with the rubber
33:22
band around so so what they've got if you haven't seen it it's where you get the little what you're doing with dice
33:28
Forge is you're putting the sides of the faces onto the dice right that you earn through various things um but there's a
33:35
place where all of these are and they just sit open and you know full well if you even knock the Box slightly it's
33:40
going to they're going to go everywhere so what they've done it's amazing they put this little component tra in a
33:45
sleeve and then get you a little premium like not elastic band what would you call it like a really thick like wide
33:52
yeah it's like the elastic that you would have in clothes or something fabric wide like a resistance band
33:58
big a really thin doing a workout with it we might do a th band no it's um it's
34:03
like the kind of elastic that would be in your trousers something exctly that yeah yeah so it's just I love it I it's
34:08
the first time I've ever seen that component and it's really well designed to be fair I remember the first time I saw that box and you w taking it all
34:14
apart cuz we played it at JP's and I was like immediately I was having this kind of slight kind of anxiety about oh but
34:20
if that's tipped over it's but it can't tip over and it doesn't and it just lies there beautifully it's it's perfect yeah
34:26
unless you like unless you take it to A Game's day and you and you tip that bugger well don't tip it lay it flat and
34:34
just be happy you know that's still it is in a cardboard sleeve so I mean you're not going to get
34:40
absolute Calamity it's not going to be Carnage when you lift the lid of the Box off when you slide it out of the cardboard sleeve you're just going to
34:46
have the bits everywhere which is fine so it isn't going to be like an explosion in a box no no no the tiles are all right to contained explosion
34:53
else but no it's a great it's a great solution and on a side note an underrated game in general I always
34:59
think it's fun yeah good fun light quick we we um borrowed that from the board game library at the ukge and played it
35:06
with Tambo and his brother and I don't think his brother or maybe even Tambo had played it before no and it's really quick to learn it's really intuitive
35:13
really obvious and there's no downtime in turns like we were just talking about with your other games there um your turn
35:19
is everyone else's turn as well in for always rolling your dice always rolling and it's just great that's really really
35:24
I just get bored between turns I'm just not interested anymore but that keeps your you know kind of attention
Eagle-Gryphon Games Big Box Games & Art Society Flocked Lining
35:31
definitely I mean special mention as well to uh Eagle Griffin games because
35:37
they they do provide you inserts for all of their big box game lerta games all of
35:42
them have got them they've got better over the years if you go back to vgos n not great you go to the latest
35:50
ones brilliant so everything fits just a shame about the quality of the game that it holds shut up ra another another
35:58
really good honorable mention I think or it looks nice which we all know that Aesthetics is my kind of prime directive
36:04
when we playing games but the flocked golden lining of art Society now there
36:10
is a small issue with it if it does get tipped a little bit again you you could not store that game um on its side
36:17
because it would just be a nightmare and even if you don't store on its side yeah you move it you take it somewhere you do get a bit of movement of the pieces but
36:24
it's not terrible but that is like a lovely offering that box cuz you have to kind of pass it around the table people
36:30
are picking their pieces it is a a nice you know it's an attractive part of the
36:35
game and that whole game's about Aesthetics so it's quite good in keeping I think but it's good though right so so
36:40
games and Publishers that actually think about the entire package and solution
36:46
that when you get it you don't have to go well game's fantastic love it I need an insert I need to get something to
36:53
replace something I quite like that though yeah no I don't it doesn't bother me but they've designed something that's
36:59
so good right from the off I mean you just got to say hats off because it's like there's nothing I would change here
37:06
it's perfect does what it needs to do and even when they not perfect and they're like 80 90% it's still not going to you know
37:13
when you get to the point where it doesn't justify buying an insert to replace it and you think it's good enough that's all good yeah it's great I
37:20
think when Publishers do it right they should be saluted definitely I think sometimes um they sort of companies
Everdell & Wingspan Big Box Editions
37:28
perhaps realize oh you know what this has been terrible or it's a really big kind of um sort of game train that's
37:36
been going on for ages for example everdale the big box and wingspan are two of the ones that are jumping to mind
37:42
they have actually manufactured something and are selling something to solve those sorts of problems yeah now
37:49
of course we've got both the big box this it's exactly the kind of thing I like which is lovely but I do think that
37:56
is then saying we did a really bad job of something originally but now we want you to pay 150 quid or whatever the
38:02
price tag is for our storage solution so I and again it's going to get me people like me snapping it up every time like
38:09
automatic however I don't like that kind of we've made we're going to make you
38:16
pay for a a better version I just think that's a little bit on you don't have to have it but we know you will but this is
38:23
it exact exactly I think to be fair I'll come to the defense a little bit of wings not so much everel which I do
38:29
actually mostly agree with with wingspan I think it's just due to the fact it's got so many expansions I think the
38:36
actual story solution in the game is actually okay I think it's actually okay it's
38:42
just the fact that obviously with all the expansions all together it just becomes very messy um you're trying to
38:50
cram it all in one box maybe that goes badly you're trying to then you know it's just the fact that it's been so
38:56
popular I think remember what the original insert of wingspan looked like cuz that was one of the first ones that I made an insert for well you didn't
39:03
really need one well I say there wasn't one not quite true because you've got the actual nesting not the nesting box
39:08
that was the actual bit but the um the with the cards with the cards in the little container for all the eggs and
39:15
stuff so and yeah it does a decent job I'm not saying I would I wouldn't have
39:20
mentioned it in the ones that did a good job I don't think it was as bad as yeah
39:26
an nevero wasn't bad and I think yeah it maybe it's it's something that it's a real cult classic so they know they're
39:32
going to get people to buy it automatically and it it looks very pleasing when you've got all those kind
39:38
of tactile components just like I mean everdale the the little stones and the little the little Pebbles and and the
39:44
little lovely berries like it's a very tactile game in the same way that wingspan is especially if you get the wooden component so I think that box is
39:51
almost like a a an Ode to things that look nice
39:57
I don't I I always think with these games it's like everell again I wouldn't slag off that one necessarily as as
40:03
being bad to begin with just the amount of expansions but I think the big boxes for me I would never buy one I would buy
40:10
one as a gift only so it's the type of thing but you I I don't think I could
40:15
really justify it that's it is it um but it's the type of thing that gifts are for right when you can't justify
40:21
something so that's when someone goes okay well you can't justify it for yourself but I'll buy it for you for
40:26
birthday and that's what the nesting box was wasn't it it was your couple of years ago birthday wasn't it I think it
40:31
was a Christmas present yeah I don't remember CU that's the year that I spilled water all over the card oh hence
40:37
sleeved everything ever since yeah yeah so yeah I think it's one of those that
40:43
you know if you really love that game I think you go for it and it just looks Lush it just but it does mean that you
40:48
can't take it anywhere I would be very loathed to take wingspan or everdale for that matter to a convention or a board
40:55
game event maybe to someone's house but to a convention or a public place where you need to have your stuff stored
41:00
around you yeah it it just makes a bit prohibitive it depends on the convention if it's a localish one yeah maybe then
The classic FFG trench
41:07
maybe but so for me a game that I thought did it right was say based on my
41:12
experience is uh fallout the ball game by Fantasy Flight um the base game alone
41:18
has enough yeah curly put fun down yeah go for it I don't care I'm I like those
41:23
games yeah curly stop being stop being a snob it's rubbish not being a snob I'm
41:29
not being a SN all there you go for you it's a game no for everyone for you no
41:37
oh I'm used to this Chris every defending me for than just kicking me while I'm down you carry on my friend
41:43
fine ignore him so that box is kind of like it's got an insert already that's kind of like v-shaped but with a flat
41:50
bottom that makes sense called the trench the trench is it that makes more sense a Fantasy Flight trench okay that
41:55
works so all the map and stuff all nicely fit in there with loads of space on top the side bits sort of flap
42:02
upwards so you can put all the health Styles and stuff all the cards all the figures can go down there and then they
42:07
flat back down and that's it that's fine so then when I bought the next expansion uh the new California expansion um I
42:13
moved all the stuff from that other box into that box and it still fit all the mat tiles and stuff all stacked on the
42:19
purple all the other stuff fitting all the new figures fit in and it was fine um the only problem I had was when I
42:24
bought the atomic bonds um Co-op expansion um that box is
42:29
mainly um additional cards and things so they would fit in there if I wanted to
42:36
but I think I'd try to keep I'd like to keep them separately anyway because they it changes obviously the game mode from
42:42
being semi Coop to fully Co-op so I Tred to keep them separate anyway and I just like but I say I actually got rid of the
42:49
new California box now entirely it's don't need it so it's just gone to the recycling you actually Dred it away
42:55
absolutely I'm with I'm with him on yeah I normally would normally keep it but it's got to the point where I just I'm
43:00
running out a room so I'm like I I get rid of that that's one less never get you know Big Cube box in my way
43:05
everything's gone on the original box I'm going to keep the game I'm never going to get get rid of it so yeah fair I guess if you decied keep the extra the
43:12
little Atomic bonds pack which is about I don't know three times the size of a deck of cards the box is not bigger um
43:18
and it just sits on top or just sits alongside it and it's they just go together whenever I need them to be fair I came up with a really good storage
43:24
solution for it which Chuck in the pin yeah
43:29
nothing but predictable predict but now it's weird that you mentioned the the trench cuz
43:35
lots of people rag on FFG for the trench it they used it in pretty much every
43:41
game in their back out it never bothers me and actually depends on the game
43:47
certain games like for I agree with you because I had the the same for me and I cons Consolidated everything in the box
43:53
when I had it and uh yeah it's fine it does the job in in certain games is
43:59
absolutely fine but other games when when you can't fit things underneath the the cardboard yeah stuff and it starts
44:06
being a bit wonky then Ching out when the lid doesn't sit like I just yeah you
44:12
get upset yeah yeah there's going to be one that has got the trench design that I'm going to be discussing when we
44:17
discuss things it didn't quite do it right oh that's all we can Mo how about you starts off then so what a game then curly that's utter trash that's not
44:24
Fallout that you don't it didn't fit it doesn't work work and you have to go and buy something to make it
44:30
better you I will I will just point out I don't hate Fallout not really it's not
44:35
for me is genuinely what it is it's not for me I love you really that would be cut out but I but I do but I do yeah
44:41
doesn't bother me but no I absolutely love the um I love the the world of Fallout so yeah I think it was CU I
44:48
wanted to like it so much and I didn't quite like it as much as I thought I hoped anyway so um I've actually got a
44:53
few but you probably don't want to hear all of them but um I'll probably just give you the headlines then just 23 one of them so um yeah so I was going to
Some games that fell short on their storage solutions
44:59
mention Baron Park was absolutely diabolical attempt splitting it up but
45:04
it was awful but I'm not going to go into detail on that one but yeah Baron Park do better all right just don't do
45:10
anything it's fine with nothing I I love you just Baron part do better not the publisher but bar the game the game do
45:17
better um yeah the other one with an honorable mention was Lords of water de which wasted so much space I wanted to
45:24
throw out the window so I literally removed it's one I think the only thing I've ever thrown away from a board game
45:30
that I've kept cuz I was just like it's so disgusting it makes me it is awful so
45:36
um but yeah th those two definitely the case but you know I don't know if it's
45:41
the worst but because it's the game where I love the most where it doesn't work at all is civilization the 2010
45:47
version it's got the trench design and you would hope with the way that the tiles are about the same size as the
45:52
trench it would all work but it just doesn't it's a total flipping mess none of the bits fit in like it should um
45:58
yeah it just absolutely hate it as a story solution um I wish I could be asked to do something about it but I
46:04
can't so this is the first time I'm hearing about it maybe maybe I could I don't know there's just so much in there
46:10
dear I don't think that even it would do much there is a lot in there the components even the components have baby
46:16
components yeah they've been multiplying in that box for years but I that game I
46:21
do love that game we should we should play it we should play it we should definitely play it again but yeah it's uh yeah the story it's very I don't know
46:28
of its time 2010 probably not thought about too much um and yeah certainly you
46:34
can notice the difference between that and some of the more modern games shall we say but probably the worst in reality is probably Baron Park um that is awful
46:42
I saw a a little Facebook thread on one of the board game trade and chat thingies where we were talking about inserts that were bad or somebody was
46:48
mentioning something and then someone commented actually you know what I I really like the baron Park insert and I thought I can I can forgive pineapple on
46:55
Pizza I I'm very broadminded you know not a lot really offends me but there that there's some things you just
47:02
think I don't you're just wrong you're just wrong I just can't understand how
47:08
that could ever be anything other than abject mhm be honest just awful and
47:14
I can't believe we've gotten this far through the episode without me mentioning folded space huh but now you've mentioned the Lords of Water Deep
47:20
so that is the latest folded space um insert I've got I was going to make it on my annual leave that I had before and
47:26
I didn't get around doing it so I've still got that to look forward to but that is one of the one of the first ones that I tried to make an insert for
47:32
myself and I was proud of it at the time and now looking back it's absolute it's it's pants compared to the beautifulness
47:39
of harded space so I'm you know going to totally do that this is one of the many reasons why we get on as a couple cuz I
47:45
hate doing any of that stuff and you love it so all of these games I've got and I I just go Becky I bought this you
47:51
know whatever sweet that'll be good fun for me like I know what I'm doing my Saturday night Sly it's wild parties our
47:59
house folded space insert making yeah well that's my kind of That's my kind of pie my most hated insert is for a game
48:07
that I've never even played I don't even have any kind of interest in or anything else at all but it's Great Western
48:15
Trail just what is happening with that that insert I can't think what that insert stuff doesn't fit in it it's like
48:22
they should have just not just doesn't fit is this is this original or second edition uh the blue one the inserts blue
48:27
I think it's second edition okay but they' have been better just not having an insert just having everything in
48:33
baggies cuz the little kind of troughs they've made for things it doesn't fit the things so what what what did you
48:42
even bother you should have not bothered the little bit of effort you made actually was worse than making zero
48:47
effort W absolutely crap but but Bing not Baron Baron Park crap well at least
48:53
Baron Park is two bits a card so you think well actually they did they did do minimal effort and it's AB crap but with
49:00
this they have actually vacuum molded an actual insert and it just kept making me think have I am I trying to put the
49:06
wrong pieces in the wrong place because well there's nowhere else that they fit but it it doesn't fit in here right
49:11
there's too many I think it was like is it coins or money or there's some small circular token I I like say I've never
49:17
played the game so likely to be coins maybe but they they don't fit in the trough and it just baffles my mind that
49:24
you'd even go to a little bit of effort and still absolutely just Knack it that
49:29
bad it's just terrible it's just terrible I don't know which version you're talking about to be honest was it
49:35
recently yeah because I've only played the second edition once well it's got a blue insert I that's all I can say if
49:41
you uh if you punched it for me which is reasonably likely you would have never seen it not
49:46
reasonbly it is absolutely do some of them he doesn't do any of I knew nacki I
49:51
did did you think so uh I don't think you did and I'm upset if you have popped games
49:58
without me I'm a bit upset because I like do yeah I like doing it JP always feels a bit sick when he
50:05
comes around my house and I've had a game for like two months it's still in shrink it's still should we play this game y he gets out on the table and it's
50:10
still shrink wrapped and I'm like like really and I like popping
50:16
games out but I don't like popping them out before I'm about to play them and try to play them immediately and then learn them and then play to be fair I
50:22
wouldn't do it if I knew I was playing that game that day it's not like I right I know everyone else can pick in to help
50:28
me with it it's say Becky we're playing this tomorrow can you pop it out ready yeah you have a deadline and you need to be fair that that makes that as if I'm a
50:35
I like doing it yeah EXA that's the point so what was the latest one um with those kind of hex aisles uh one of your
50:44
latest ones you've bought well I can't think what it is hexes could Eclipse it could be anything no it's not Eclipse um
50:51
but it anaki I think it was anaki actually that doesn't
50:57
it's got Globes no I don't know D Mage Knight Mage Knight that was Mage Knight
51:04
yeah you did pop Mage Mage KN was quite good that was quite good you need to play that as well um definitely well now
51:11
out of his shrink wrap yeah yeah it can't be it could be played now what about you JP I think what's Tosh what's
51:17
rubish it's going similar to The Baron Park thing nucleum insert with you know inverted
51:24
commas or whatever uh it's the same thing you get a bunch of card which has
51:29
little slats in and you stack them on each other to make little grid pattern
51:35
and it's shite and I tried it I thought no I'm going to try it you know and first thing the first fail was I don't
51:41
even know how to build this yeah there wasn't it's not like Baron part which is what two bits that make a y well yeah
51:47
but the amount of times you're trying to put those things together even though it is only two bits it's just nuts but this is like 10 bits and you're like I just
51:55
don't know what I'm supposed to do with it and I bet you 99% of people went that
52:00
thr threw it away and I I give it a go I had to go on the website find the
52:06
the configuration and I couldn't find anything so went on BG and it might be because I bought it early and had not
52:11
quite put the instructions for it up yet so I managed to build it and did it but it's one of those things that every time
52:18
you you play it the the the tokens slide underneath them and everything goes everywhere so yeah it's gone it's all in
52:23
bags now it's a lot easier then there is the official in ERT for it but but like
52:28
with most of these things when you get the expansion in there doesn't quite fit yeah it's full it's very full honestly
52:35
with some of these I wish they would just leave a bunch of baggies in there and say fly boots don't bother yeah
52:40
what's the point yeah maybe they got spare punch board and I thought that would be fun to do this will piss them
52:47
off yeah it's like a a game within a game can you put together not a fun game is it but yeah that's the one that calls
52:53
out cuz I think where games don't give view an insert they don't count cuz they haven't tried that's okay don't mind
53:01
it's when they've tried when they shouldn't have yeah there you go no that's very true um
53:09
for me it's the games that require you to have um some degree of like a degree
53:14
in engineering or something you have to physically take everything has to sit in a very precise spot such as for me it's
53:20
Frost Haven or Glo Haven Frost Haven yeah exactly I have you have to there's a there is a guy that you get and it's
53:26
still doesn't work um you still have to then take it all out put it back in take it all out put it back in and then you know that was a f fun experience for
53:33
everyone tag folded space inserts exactly um so my resolution to that is
53:40
less than nice everyone will probably be sick but I have do have for all the map tiles and all the uh all the character
53:47
boxes and the scenario books and stuff I do have a separate sort of plastic box
53:53
that's what I had to do and they just go in there and that's that and I can find everything really quickly if I need to get it all the enemies and stuff stay in
54:00
the original box of all the tokens but they're all in nice flat lines so I don't have to dig through the entire box
54:05
then go I only needed a skeleton um and that's it and then I can put them to one side um but yeah when I'm done with the
54:11
game like when I finish um Gloom Haven I did put everything back in the box and then just duct tape the box shut and
54:18
that's stay that's not not being touched anymore can stay there yeah it's fine just hide it away Indiana Jones will
54:24
will have to come and get it it's fine um but yeah so with frost D at the moment it's just um it's nice just
54:30
taking it all out and keeping it separate completely separate as much as you can before you stop stop using it entirely yeah I'm glad cuz that's what
54:37
happened to me basically I just got sick of it like setting up breaking down it took like an hour each end and I just
54:43
want you know what it's not worth it Chris do you want to buy it yes please I love it thank you very much I'm just
54:48
finished um so yeah even with the bits and pieces that came with it I don't know if you bought some of the inserts
54:54
or they they they come with it space one yeah the only thing was the glue they recommended wasn't the best so when
55:00
Becky lovingly put it together it did start to come apart again so it's like you're using PV that's why you just use
55:06
your glue gun but you do make it dry first people it's very important make it without using any glue first to make
55:11
sure you got it the right way because once you've glue guned it there is no going back that is true and I've done a
55:17
few inserts where I've gone oh crap but luckily I've used like proper wood big
55:24
gorilla strength whatever you call it and that's that's all right that holds that binds but you do have a bit of play
55:30
if you get it wrong it's like nope quick off yeah no with a glue gun you so yeah
55:35
build it build it without any glue first yeah I'll I'll I'll have a story
55:40
about that in a minute it's fine don't worry so now we can move on to some additional storage op options so
An ode to the Too Many Bones Trove Chest
55:47
sometimes when a game has just too much stuff or there's loads of expansions or your JP and you want to own a
55:53
Fantastical magical chest um then the original boxes may not do it anymore and
55:59
you need to either get rid of them or just move on to something else entirely so what are some examples that you guys
56:04
have bought or have seen that replaces the original boxes entirely JP I believe that you may or may not have a good
56:11
example in the share on this one yeah I'll just get out of the way which is obviously my uh uh you know drink your shots everyone people it's the too many
56:18
bones yeah Pro chest the best goddamn storage solution I've ever seen hands
56:25
down like is it worth it financially probably not because it's expensive um
56:31
how many hours of Joy have you got from it it's one of the best Christmas presents go back to your point curly I got it as a Christmas present and it was
56:38
such a great present because this game you know I love it and it was like there you go Merry Christmas big box oh look
56:45
at this thing and it's just for those that don't know what it is or haven't heard of the Trove chest it's basically
56:51
a cube that fits in your cak shelf pretty much perfectly there's a bit of play cuz otherwise you never get it out
56:57
again um and it has like a uh like a front that you slide upwards and on on
57:03
the front has a magnetic bone key oh beautiful that you then use this magnetic bone key on the drawers that
57:11
sit behind it and you can use it basically pull the drawers out and all the drawers have got um space for for
57:16
different things like you've got all your rules and character sheets for your gear locks you've got uh the Tyrant
57:22
trays that sit on the right hand side and even in there you've got you pull the Tyrant trays out and every tyrant's
57:28
got their own little plastic um uh I don't know like box that holds the chips
57:34
and the dice and the the cards for each Tyrant so it's all organized beautifully
57:39
my favorite is the the gearlock dice tray one of the bigger bigger trays CU When you get that out and you get the um
57:47
the the gear lock trays which holds all of the dice and their chips and it's just oh that's beautiful and the way
57:52
they work which is the lid pulls off and you can then insert the the the tray
57:58
inside of the lid so it kind of raises it up as well like it's just fantastic
58:03
the whole thing the experience like when you're about to set that game up it's just like so good I like it cuz you get
58:09
to play with a trove chest and and uh all these drawers out get stuff out yeah yeah it's great genuine question yes
58:16
genuine question do you know how much it was I mean I got it was a gift yeah I got it for uh I think it was $99 at the
58:24
time right you can't get it for that now it's about 150 okay what pounds or dollars dollars dollars I think so
58:31
you're looking at 120 quid 130 quid then you got shipping and all that kind of stuff the trouble is with that product
58:37
for chip Theory games it's uh it's not a lost leader there's buger all margin in it for them they don't make a lot of
58:44
money in Trove chests yeah um but they know that they're quite popular and
58:49
people want them the demand is is there so yeah it's it's an odd product because
58:55
it's so pre like premium in its uh quality and design and everything that
59:00
goes into it and yeah it's just it it's not going to be for everyone and it goes
59:07
back to your wingspan nesting box problem once it's all in there you ain't moving it it's so heavy it's like
59:13
ridiculously heavy the amount of neoprene and pokker chips that is in that thing now it's like you'd kill a
59:19
man like literally or give him a hernia trying to lift it yeah and I when I moved house I had to empty all of the
59:26
bits and all of the bits had to go into my big board game bag separately in
59:31
their trays so just so I could move the the Trove chest itself empty wow because
59:37
I couldn't move it full cuz it would have pulled me back out or or if that thing had dropped with the weight in it
59:43
it would just explode it would literally just blow up and I can't even imagine
59:49
how awful your little face would have been you would have just no I'm not moving now this is it you know what when I'm not selling this house anymore I'm
59:55
going to live here forever all chips everywhere no when I moved the I had to move that I said I'm moving that I'm not
1:00:00
letting the movers touch it that's mine I went in my car Y and
1:00:05
everything was like I know where it is it's safe like sh was just looking at me going weirdo put all the passports all
1:00:12
the passports and all the you know like the first pictures of your kids that have been drawn and their teeth and the locks of their hair yeah s whatever Ro
1:00:18
chest was like literally close to me as possible that was it like in the in the sort of passenger seat you put like the seat Bel around imag sh she have to walk
1:00:26
to the new but yeah that I just want to get out of the way because for me there is no better solution um but as expensive as
1:00:36
hell I mean like we were saying earlier on it's not worth it no it's it's it's
1:00:42
not more expensive than it should be but as a storage solution it's not worth it but if you love a game that much you
1:00:48
just you just want it yeah it looks good it looks really good it is over engineered but nicely so do you know
1:00:55
what I mean the idea something being over engineered is beautiful I think like yeah the like with the nesting box
1:01:00
yeah there's those beautiful little um like ribbons like little tabs that you can lift and hold because they know how
1:01:06
difficult that would be to not have those so someone has absolutely over engineered that to the to the nth degree
1:01:13
yeah but that's what's so beautiful and maybe it's the kind of personality that a lot of board game players have but the
1:01:19
idea of that kind of exactness that preciseness that beautifully constructed
1:01:25
everything's been thought about how you actually use the game like do you need individual token trays do you need
1:01:31
whatever that has been thought about beautifully and I just I just love that kind of thing cly you know what I I'm
Kerley's unorthodox solution
1:01:39
going to go down a slightly different tack with this one one solution that I've been going towards lately is not a
1:01:45
bought solution now this is going to sound a little bit obvious to some people but I've been using the unused
1:01:51
expansion boxes from other games to store any Surplus isn't that just like mad I need
1:02:00
to find something for this game but it's in another box it's like the old time looking for DVD it's in some another DVD's box I keep them together that's
1:02:07
the thing but but I don't do it all the time but for an example um when I had Twilight
1:02:13
Imperium I had um the the extra little trayes that was quite a popular buy from
1:02:18
Etsy and I I got in boled with that where you move all of the St around with it and stuff and they all had different
1:02:24
colors depending on your faction and stuff and I bought a bunch of these but I was like where the hell do I put that there no way that's going in the main
1:02:30
box so um what I done if I if I I've utilized the expansion box for Great
1:02:35
Western Trail uh what is it rails to the north rails to the north yeah yeah rails to the north so I use that as a as a
1:02:40
solution for that one but it just it works for me I'm not saying it will work for everyone but we got all of our un news kind of expansion boxes kind of
1:02:47
above the above the CA and all that kind of stuff so you know that works for me that's what I use apart from that I've
1:02:53
got down on my list everel wingspan I think we pretty much covered that one so you know I I would say that would be my
1:02:59
choice apart from going into folded space which Becky no doubt after her fangirling at the ukg will want to take
1:03:05
that one up herself so I'm going to I'm going to just give my little tip bit and then uh let Becky continue with that one
Folded Space returns again...no we're not sponsored
1:03:10
I think no surprise so folded space is my is my favorite I mean you know a little
1:03:17
kind of Nod to those beautiful wooden boxes that you can buy which are really beautiful but the price point is just so
1:03:26
high like I remember seeing tambo's got the Mansions of Madness one which kind of reminds me of an old lady's sewing
1:03:33
box so it's kind of on hinges you lift it up and then you've got these lovely layers and they are beautiful really
1:03:38
beautiful super heavy though and you basically have to throw the original box away because this now becomes the box so
1:03:46
you know they are very nice and they always look lovely when you see them at conventions and it shows that someone
1:03:51
absolutely loves a game if they've bought one of those so totally they're really lovely but for me I like the fact that your
1:03:59
board game still looks like a board game it's still in its original box but when you lift the lid you've got this
1:04:05
beautiful organized thought about process and again they they Milo hi Milo
1:04:11
I know you know you're listening obviously sure course he is Milo from folded space who I met and Curly's absolutely right that was my highlight
1:04:17
of the whole entire weekend convention because I've done a little tiny bit of
1:04:22
my own sort of 3D printing design had designed tiny little bit I know the kind
1:04:28
of level of thought that has to go into that because I've not got enough of that in order to do my stuff properly so the
1:04:34
amount of thought and sort of analyzing and figuring out that goes into
1:04:40
constructing one of those to the level that they do everything fits on top of each other everything is measured
1:04:47
everything they think about like say how do you actually use this game do you need a little box each to have tokens on
1:04:53
do you need it's not just not just storing it no absolutely it's it's about the the kind of enhancing the the the
1:05:01
not playability but enhancing the gaming experience and that set up and tear down and I just think that's really really
1:05:09
not important in a game you don't have to have it but I think something kly
1:05:15
mentioned earlier you know if something doesn't fit and you just throw it out I can't imagine if not something not working like I can't tolerate this
1:05:22
doesn't work very well my prime directive almost is improve that thing
1:05:27
make it work better customize something if it's normal add glitter to it you know I I need to I have a inbuilt need
1:05:34
to improve upon or or not make better but make something more usable or
1:05:41
Slicker or shinier or I don't know whatever and I love doing that so the idea of making folded space inserts for
1:05:48
me is I love making them for one right at the start and yeah I have to say
1:05:53
don't use the glue that they suggest but I guess they suggest it because yeah you do have that little bit of oh no wait
1:06:00
whoops I've put that the wrong way around and it's not going to be end of the world but just use for me like if you're going to use like a PVA G you
1:06:06
just use the proper like premium High bonded stuff that will probably hang you
1:06:11
know uh like using the building trade like use that stuff your school glue your school kid PV that'll do it yeah no
1:06:19
more Nails would be fun or gorilla glue or something or or I personally like um hot milk glue guns but I use that for a
1:06:26
lot of other stuff so I've got a very fine nozzle on mine you can be quite precise with your nozzle yeah you can so
1:06:32
the whole Act of making these things is Fun the act of knowing exactly they're going to fit in the box and and also
1:06:39
they think about okay I'm know there are some crazy people that store stuff sideways and whatever you guys you do
1:06:45
you but I like how mostly with a folded space insert when the boards on top or
1:06:50
whatever it does contain things they very rarely have to put Lids on stuff because the way design them they do it
1:06:56
in such a way that you don't you're not going to get Fallout yeah and I just love that yeah it's just beautiful cool
1:07:03
brilliant so that wraps up a nice discussion about boxes all types of boxes big ones and little ones and they
1:07:10
go on the shelves horizontally not vertically obviously
TURN 4 - Return of Question Time from our listeners
1:07:25
so I thought I would revive the question segment for this part of the episode rather than our would you rather as we've had a message from Buzz Sprout
1:07:32
from one of our list listeners Stewart so Stewart asks the following have any of you taken part in official playing
1:07:39
such as demos or early play tests as a result of our growing industry
1:07:45
connections as a podcast I mean this is a an interesting question that hopefully we don't come
1:07:52
across as pretentious it's going to make it sound like we feel like a real podcast and now we've got the special mics that is quite nice but the idea
1:08:00
that we've actually spoken to people that design board games just still
1:08:05
baffles me like that still makes me just I don't know I can't quite believe it
1:08:10
yeah I do find the interviews the most interesting thing I have to say like after playing them you know but as far
1:08:15
as official ones goes I really enjoyed um my response to that it's a little while ago now was Melia that was that
1:08:22
was really good that was really interesting with the designer played with him and yeah it was just a really
1:08:27
good game really enjoyed that side of it playing a prototype yeah it was really good so yes a couple of them yeah I mean
1:08:34
I've been for I think we're fortunate as a as a group that we support Paul grogan's gaming rules and and I'm not
1:08:42
sure that's kind of linked to the podcast but it's kind of ever since we've been starting the podcast we've
1:08:47
been helping him but that's not because of it it's just because we live quite close and we love board games and you
1:08:52
know it's become a good friend of ours as we we've got done have gone through so because of that connection we play a
1:08:59
lot of stuff that sometimes is not even out and but that's probably more because Paul's getting a lot of you know
1:09:05
promotional copies or or Advanced copies preview copies all that kind of thing but independent of that connection I
1:09:12
think as Becky said it's quite surreal that we are speaking to board game
1:09:19
Publishers you know like mine Clash is one as an example that um I think we've
1:09:24
got a really good relationship with now and then to the point where we go to trade shows like Essen and um UK games
1:09:31
Expo and they're like have you played this set no i' come and have a game or you know what we we'll lend you the the
1:09:38
one of our demo copies for the evening to play uh at the at the Expo that's what happened we played Ironwood and
1:09:44
there's a photo of me literally in bed with Ironwood uh as a joke I didn't sleep with it um he did but again like
1:09:51
to to kind of have the trust from a publisher which is one of their demo copies for the game that's just been released or about to be released on uh
1:09:59
game found and they only have you know three I think and they said like yeah here you go go and play with that
1:10:05
tonight as long as we get it back in the morning cuz like if we don't we're screwed and that did feel special that
1:10:10
was a lot of trust there a bit of trust there and he's like yeah um so that that was quite nice to be trusted with with
1:10:17
the game and I remember thinking I've got to get this back and uh you would have moved hell or high what you would
1:10:23
have gone through a ring of fire to get that box back I just know you would I know they did security held Rob up at
1:10:28
the time and uh we were slightly getting a bit delayed but we got there so I think with that was was really good and
1:10:35
I think there's just other examples of of you know I think with the podcast that that we've been going for over two
1:10:41
years now and you know I think the name of us is getting out there a bit more and uh a lot of kind of Publishers are
1:10:48
starting to go oh yeah we we've heard of you guys which again is mental and the
1:10:54
fact that we the fact that we you know interviewing you know like um Min and elwin from uh who work with cck Games
1:11:01
edition and David tury I just blows my bloody tiny little mind if I'm being honest and know fact we've done some of
1:11:08
these interviews and that they've given the time for us which is just the gaming group in the southwest that's playing
1:11:13
games yeah that we just go around JP's house and just play stuff yeah I think to be fair with mine Clash specifically
1:11:20
I don't know this is the case but they know we're genuine fans yes like it makes up three of my top five games of
1:11:27
all time yeah M Clash gam so they know that we are genuine like you know you tag them in like our favorite games or
1:11:34
you know episodes that involved mind Clash specifically so they're more inclined to help people who know are
1:11:39
genuine fans and not just trying to like I guess probably just jump on the bandwagon and try and gain their kind of
1:11:45
support yeah um we mention them all the time because we love their games yeah so
1:11:50
yeah we we we get Advanced um you know copies of things we get to to play certain things that haven't come
1:11:57
out yet and that's very privileged you know we we we completely understand that and um and we're very thankful for it to
1:12:05
be honest uh so yeah we to answer your question we do get to to play stuff uh
1:12:12
in an official capacity and uh even this year in Essen um I'm going to be demoing
1:12:18
for mine Clash which is cool oh my but I I just want the purple uh was it M
1:12:25
jacket mine jacket I just want one of them I don't know if I'm going to get one I hope I do you're listening mine
1:12:31
I'm sure if you ask I want one cuz about the purple jacket is it
1:12:38
embroidered embroidered with my name on yeah you spelled JP exactly as it sounds just just so you know if the purle
1:12:43
jackets easy don't need much stitching um yeah I don't know how to answer it without like you say I don't want to
1:12:49
come across like knobby yeah but stop talking now I'm only joking mate
1:12:55
do you know what I mean though yeah yeah cuz you you could with this sort of question and I think we we are very humble with it and I'd like to think
1:13:02
we'll continue to to be humble that any publisher big or small and I'm actually
1:13:07
on the smaller side strong point that's a total winner for me so when we saw them at the ukge a couple of years ago
1:13:15
at the um preview event on the Thursday the guy was really sweet and said oh you take one of these and I felt I felt
1:13:21
guilty for taking the it off the guy I mean if I could have bought it from him at the time I would have done but we have played that game so much and
1:13:29
we we bring it out all the time and it's such a great game yeah just strong point it's just it's a quiz game but you don't
1:13:34
really need to know much about the questions because you're guessing if someone else is going to guess it right that's where you get most your points
1:13:40
from it most eloquently solves the problem of keeping people interested in between their own turns games yeah which
1:13:48
is like normally it's only exciting when you're the one answering questions yeah but it invests people in other people's
1:13:53
ter it's a small little box fantastic game just really fantastic game so the point of the matter is is really I don't
1:14:00
think we are pretentious or or we're getting carried away with it at all we're we're extremely lucky and extremely grateful but the reason why I
1:14:07
think our names got out there a little bit is because we're not we're just genuine fans of all the games yeah and
1:14:12
we're not we're not we're just trying to you know to each other moving but I think I
1:14:19
wouldn't sit here and go I love that game if I didn't like it just cuz someone gave it to me for free cuz I so I probably just wouldn't mention it
1:14:25
maybe or that's the r rle that we have right that is the rule which is like we we get uh I get messages on Instagram
1:14:31
for for you know Publishers that that are probably not well known and I'll always respond like I we'll always kind
1:14:37
of say hi and stuff and if it's a game that doesn't genuinely look like it's for us then I won't I won't I'll be
1:14:44
quite open so I'm not quite sure that's going to be our bag and there's certain ones I'm like not sure but then when
1:14:50
they come we we we give them a play if they kind of a noteworthy we'll we'll
1:14:55
talk about them we we don't want to take a game and just talk about it like you say for the sake of talking about it
1:15:01
because we've got a free copy it's not what we're about no if we don't like it we won't talk about it I mean it's just
1:15:06
not going to make it and with like mill meows yeah Chris sent me that and I was really thankful but I still backed it I still bought it just like any everyone
1:15:13
else because I wanted to help support that game because it was so good but I think yeah if anyone else buys it cuz
1:15:19
I've mentioned how good it is then great but I still feel like I've i l that game enough that I'm happy to have like two
1:15:25
copies and now I'm just going to use the maps when I get through I think one one example of that was the um what was that
1:15:31
welshtown uh game oh T lik that so with TB um that was a relatively small
1:15:37
publisher got in contact there's a little bit of delay wasn't there we're getting it to us but beyond that um yeah
1:15:43
it's just a game that I wasn't particularly King to try then I played it I was thought this great game I absolutely loved it I think I liked even
1:15:48
more than Becky which for that style of game I was really surprised
1:15:55
just a like a a tableau building game I would say really nice artwork and we've mentioned it before on the podcast but
1:16:01
yeah I I was really surprised how much you liked it yeah cuz I was I kind of was coercing you to play oh we just need
1:16:07
to play he was like all right and yeah you really enjoyed it and it was it was really good really good yeah so I think
1:16:14
we we support the Hobby and you know anyone that's in it so yeah but we want
1:16:21
to stay humble people cuz we're just Gamers at the end of the day that's it
1:16:26
no exactly so no thank you Stuart for that question obviously everyone keep them coming we do like obviously like to
1:16:31
we do obviously respond to normally anyone that sends us messages or whatever whe any questions and stuff yeah to keep them coming we love
1:16:38
it cool so now we can move on to our pun ultimate
TURN 5 - Penultimate Turn: What's Coming Up
1:16:46
[Music] turn so what's upcoming what's exciting
1:16:54
gaming news non related gaming news that you guys are doing tomorrow the next day
1:16:59
next week weeks what's going on so for me I'm very excited that I'm going to go
1:17:04
on holiday that's literally where you going well I'm being quite privileged cuz we're going to n first for little
1:17:13
Caravan Jaun and then the week after uh we go to Turkey for for 10 days so yeah
1:17:19
so take a few little games along and all that kind of stuff but what I'm actually excited for is when I get back I've I've
1:17:26
been watching a few videos on a game called Winds of numera and that again
1:17:32
what wind of new merera wind of new merera okay and it's has been classed as
1:17:37
a Game of Thrones style car game it's got a bit of engine building in there doesn't take forever to play and artwork
1:17:44
looks gorgeous in this game and Mark monk from ninj Geek games did a video for it uh one of the preview videos and
1:17:51
it's on Kickstarter right now I was like looking at it going this looks quite fun and it's got a quite nice thing where
1:17:58
you you can kind of get equipment upgrade your your characters you have like a succession line and all that kind of stuff and you're like you got four
1:18:04
different Wing conditions in there and like when you like upgrading your characters or whatever you kind of a dry
1:18:10
raise marker so you can kind of upgrade your stats as you play you don't have to kind of calculate everything in your head all the time it's like well my
1:18:15
power is this because I've got all this stuff and it just keeps it quite slick and and stuff and uh yeah Mark um is
1:18:22
setting up a game and we're going to play it when I get back from holiday so I think curly you've signed up for that one yeah yeah yeah really it looked like
1:18:29
the type of game that I'd be interested in engine building Game of Thrones you had me sold but I had a look on it as well and it was like yeah that looks
1:18:35
good it looks cool looks a bit different um and give it a go and if there's a bit of bant around the table which a bit of
1:18:42
a laugh so I'm looking forward to that yeah I just want to by the way everyone knows this it's wellknown fact and he's way bigger than we are but I absolutely
1:18:49
love his videos oh yeah really really good at what he does um it's not very
1:18:54
many uh YouTube videos I watch for fun mostly I watch them um to like gain
1:19:00
knowledge on Something board games but here so they just appear in my feed and I'm like oh that sounds interesting and
1:19:05
yeah he's always really good so always entertaining is yeah if you haven't tried him before ninja ninja gig games ninja gig games yeah really
1:19:12
good you want to continue on then C yeah might as well then two things I'm looking forward to we've just ordered a
1:19:18
new hot tub Garden so Happy Days looking forward to that um first time we've ever had one so yeah there we go that's
1:19:25
pretty much that really looking forward to giving that a try um or we could play Tinder blocks on it because that's you
1:19:30
can play that outside so if we get like a floating no we're just going to we're going to borrow um too many bones yeah ah yes that's yes you get under toe with
1:19:37
a raft yeah yeah did they actually I was thinking about this the other day do they do like inflatable tables for
1:19:43
things like that they must do what for Spar yeah yeah I've got a spa bar yeah
1:19:48
which is an inflatable um thing that you can put snacks in it and drinks yeah I
1:19:53
was thinking more like for like a book or something you know or like I know this like you're going to run a risk
1:19:59
aren't you that's the thing it's like laminate they do but you we might have
1:20:04
to look at that at some point just to see like you know don't don't put stuff that's going to get soggy in there I
1:20:10
think it will get we're not playing terraforming Mars in the hot tub no no I just think that's a bad idea no I think
1:20:15
you're faint by the time that game's over anyway yeah you probably would I feel so weak what cuz you just
1:20:21
overheated and died cuz it takes 4 hours you could you could attach the temperature with what the temperature in the game so like you know you start off
1:20:28
maybe not quite as cold as come on guys wel on the temperature hey he he he yeah
1:20:35
um yeah so apart from the hot tub what I'm really looking forward to coming up in November 8th to 10th Friday uh the
1:20:42
8th to Sunday the 10th is the Fox and Hounds Devon ball game weekend um so
1:20:48
it's based in edisford and kind of big news guys is that we've been asked to kind of um sponsor it to a given degree
1:20:56
so basically we're getting involved in the running of the event setting it up um sorting out all the tickets and you
1:21:04
know working out um bit of promotion for it and also what's going to happen on the day and yeah so um we're really
1:21:10
looking forward to getting involved in that um things are underway right now we're hoping to have the tickets
1:21:16
available um by the time this episode goes out roughly um for like I say November the 8th to 10th and a little
1:21:23
bit about the event then uh starts Friday at uh 1500 3:00 in the afternoon oh your little train your little train
1:21:30
time there military he gone very military raway 20 years on the railway
1:21:35
1500 hours um but yeah and they're looking to have it's the most beautiful three
1:21:41
course meal I loved it last year and they've moved that if you went last year which was in um February or this year in
1:21:48
February and then the year before as well they did the um food the three course meal on the Saturday night um
1:21:54
which for me broke up the day a little bit so what they've done this time if anyone's interested they're going to do it on the Friday night so anyone who's
1:22:00
not interested in it um or don't want to go to it or felt it was too much in the way of the middle of a board game
1:22:07
weekend they've moved it to the start which I thought was a really good idea actually they're going to try that out of this one and see if it works well so
1:22:13
yeah um so beautiful meals beautiful company massive great big area just for open gaming really we're looking to get
1:22:20
a games Library there as well um really good bar drink drinks coffees all that
1:22:26
kind of stuff Saturday night is going to be kind like a buffet style meal not like picket sandwiches but like you know
1:22:31
Serve Yourself kind of but with a few different um options so it was like Curry and chili and all sort of stuff
1:22:36
last year wasn't it really good and like I said it is in edisford which is on the bable branch line from exas Davids but
1:22:42
it's also kind of you know mid Devon really I suppose M um a little tricky to get to it is a relatively um small
1:22:49
village um but yeah if you go on the railway line works really well it's right by the train station beautiful
1:22:56
countryside um and they're going to be doing basically you can stay in there in a hotel for the weekend very reasonably
1:23:02
priced I think um we're yet to confirm 100% the price but it's really good value for like you've got the Friday
1:23:08
night you've got the Saturday night B gaming for basically three days um and
1:23:13
all included is going to be the evening meals so a three course proper beautiful meal and the buffet as well and
1:23:20
breakfast yeah and oh yeah and breakfast as well so yeah it's going to be um yeah it's really good value I mean obviously
1:23:26
it comes at a reasonably high price point but for what you get it's really good value it's a weekend away there's
1:23:32
nothing cheap about it nowadays anyway is there and it's dog friendly dog friendly bring bring your very cute fluffy four-legged friend yeah they they
1:23:40
actively encourage it you know I remember in our room that we had last year um in the room they've got a little
1:23:45
dog bowl and a little dog little welcome dog was so cute so cute so yeah so and it solves a lot of problem like a lot of
1:23:51
people with their pets they can't go afford to go away for the weekend because then you have to get dog sitters or put them in kennels or especially if
1:23:57
you do it as a couple or a family or something so um yeah it's certainly a couple of people that I know who are
1:24:02
going to be coming along this year um it's a big selling point for them so definitely dog friendly but um yeah so
1:24:08
we'll be getting involved in that one guys and it's the first kind of event we've really truly had a bit of a handle on so yeah and the and the owner's
1:24:15
lovely as well and the bar staff and the manager brilliant really they're really Keen to have us and like you know so
1:24:21
friendly so welcoming um but yeah just small little event like it's going to be um 70 people maximum which I actually
1:24:28
really like um yeah so give it a try come come down and come and say hello
1:24:33
we're like to say tickets on sale um are going to be we're hoping as sort of mid to end of August so um yeah we're going
1:24:40
to be doing all the promos on the run up to that so keep an eye and we'll provide some links for that one um so yeah
1:24:46
anything else you guys would add who've been before the only thing I would say is uh I mean it's a very intimate
1:24:53
convention yeah it's thing um kind of said that like it was a bad thing it's that's not what everyone's walking
1:24:58
around in their pants let's just identify thatx convention it's an intimate one and it just means that it's
1:25:04
kind of like it's got a really nice uh feel about it so when you walk through the door the way you're greeted you're
1:25:10
instantly put at ease and you know you're playing games it just feels like you're playing your game with a bunch of
1:25:15
mates that are all there and by the end of the weekend you kind of know everyone because it's not Seas of people with
1:25:21
lots of huge noise going on and you know when you go to certain conventions and you get to the end of the weekend you go my head hurts like it's just too much
1:25:27
like this is quite nice it's chill it's relaxed and the ground's there you can just go out for a walk in the countryside um but what I will say is we
1:25:35
covered the event on an episode one of our expansion packs so I'll probably put a link to that in the show notes as well
1:25:40
go and listen to that because that's basically our bit of a debrief on that that weekend that we went through in February so if you want to get a feel
1:25:46
for it listen to that yeah the only other thing that I would say is um with
1:25:51
how intimate then the event actually is um there's a Devon board game weekend
1:25:56
Discord Channel that I would recommend you Google we'll obviously put the details in in the notes but um you can
1:26:04
find it pretty easily anyway but uh Devon Bard game weekend Discord Channel and there's things like well not only
1:26:10
announcements and the tickets will be available from there as well as a link um but there's also General chat but the
1:26:15
big thing about it is there's a looking for group section which people do use on the actual event itself so even if
1:26:22
you're going alone you will find people to play with absolutely we're looking into as well doing some kind of some
1:26:28
demo games and kind of um some teaching games as you know myself curly is going to run a couple of games um there just
1:26:35
for anyone who wants to kind of turn up and and play some of my games as well so come down on your own as well no no
1:26:40
problem at all if you um you know fancy it so I am looking forward to um
1:26:47
hopefully playing The Witcher with Rob in the next couple of weeks we've been chatting a lot while we've been playing Boulders gate um doing various bits and
1:26:53
pieces and he's just like oh you really need to play it you really need to play it and this is Rob so it's like yeah okay well tell me when and I will come
1:27:00
and play um so hopefully it will be in the in the on the diary in the in a
1:27:05
couple of weeks so that'll be fun I'll see you in a month and you won't have played it yeah probably not but a it has
1:27:10
been mentioned and there was a verbal agreement I shall hold him to it as much as I can um and there we go but do you
1:27:17
have an accord we have no we have an accord no we don't have afid so we'll see how about you Becky I'm looking
1:27:24
forward to playing terraforming Mars in about 3 hours oh we're going to see Dan's new house which will be really
1:27:30
nice um and we're going to play terraform Mars that's nice I know it's a game we hardly ever play yeah no one's
1:27:36
ever played in the group I think it's like probably your first time isn't it sure sure by the scores I get you'd think it was my first time which is very
1:27:43
upsetting but there we are um yeah not got anything in the calendar Rich at the
1:27:48
minute which is pretty terrible and I will put Earth in the calendar like I promised I would last time and only when
1:27:53
Rel listening to the episode I was like oh crap I didn't put that in so uh that's going to be sorted out nice when you listen to this one you'll be in the
1:27:59
same boat like oh crap I should have done that I just feel like it's that Titanic meme with that the old lady going it's been 81 years since you put
1:28:08
the event yeah it does it is a bit like that no I I will really try and do it this time this time do it I'm going to
1:28:16
put a um small games night in for just after my birthday as well because I was going to put in a game stay but then JP
1:28:22
put one in just in the middle of nowhere just because he wanted to over my birthday so what an absolute bastard I
1:28:28
know I thought that he stole my thunder but fill your boots stole your birth I've got plenty enough to give it out to you when your August the 7th when's my
1:28:35
gamees day August 24th not exactly near is it near enough you can't have two games Day within two weeks of each other
1:28:42
can you be good of course you can I'm not going to do that but what I'll probably do on top of the4 I'm mostly
1:28:48
joking I don't care I'll just steal his event as mine it just means I got to go to R house this is the curly event at
1:28:54
just bring around some banners and it's actually my birthday you want
1:29:00
to make it your weekend mate I really don't care I don't care no no I'm just um what I'll do instead I think I'll get
1:29:05
a small games event in because they're always good fun they're always we basically Becky's Becky's games day
1:29:10
mostly turned into a small games day it really good fun so we'll probably put in some uh one of those but I'll be looking
1:29:17
at the week after you get back JP fair enough see what's going on no you're
1:29:23
coming oh right o lucky boy get your hands off my and then we can play some ball
TURN 6 - The Final Turn
1:29:29
