TURN 1 - Player Count
0:00
[Music]
0:16
roll up and welcome you're listening to whose turn is it Anyway You are here with me Davey I'm currently still first
0:23
player but it's actually my last turn I know please stay
0:28
on and I am here with Becky hi everyone
0:34
curly hello and JP how's it going yeah it's going good how are you oh
0:40
backfire i' I've had a a bit of a weird weekend um because my my son has
0:47
literally just trapped his little pinky in the door frame I think you need to make sure you people say finger because
0:52
that could mean other stuff yes I mean finger not anything else back it's not his winky pinky not his winky pinky I
0:59
say we could get that in the door frame I mean that's good going and a logistical nightmare yeah so now um
1:05
Rob's daughter accidentally took the the door on him on his finger and we have to go to A&E so anyone that goes to
1:12
accident emergency in the UK will know that it's never a quick visit uh minimum
1:17
four hours minimum I would say um so yeah that that's that's what I've been
1:23
doing uh so yeah bless him he's all right he's all good um it's been one of those kind of strange weekends but also
1:30
some fun things which we may or may not talk about we'll see really how about yourself Bey I've been mostly cleaning
1:36
the house and playing Beat saber and at the same time no no that would have been cool yeah impressive really cool instead
1:43
of lightsabers it's mops a duster now and again and broke my
1:49
tooth on a donut oh Jesus how does that even happen how old was this donut it
1:55
was it was a fresh delicious yum nut from marks and Spen y what is it a yum nut it's like a donut
2:02
but it's kind of lays like a cross between a yum y donut I love yum it was
2:09
very nice um but I cracked my teeth on it so that will be fun tomorrow going to
2:14
the dentist but I've had a good productive weekend though it's been nice yeah yeah good is that because of the
2:21
the dut or was it well it was Instant Karma cuz I am on a diet and I thought do you know what no I'm going to have
2:27
I'm going to have a donut um so I had half a donut and broke my tooth on it so
2:34
did it get you back on track instant Cal it was like that's your own fault yeah so what they call negative
2:42
reinforcement that's it Curly's just slowly slipping in like pieces of metal into your food
2:49
so You' enjoy that donut that's why I did it how about yourself cury what have you
2:54
been up to yeah so I've had a bit of a a Lord of the Rings weekend which has been really cool um me and my mom are
3:01
watching the films one after the other but we're watching the um making ofs in between so it's just like makes it about
3:07
twice as long but it's really interesting some really good stuff in there so um how many hours is that so
3:14
that is now let me think I got this one out it's 11 hours for all the extended films and then it's about three for each
3:20
of the making of so well that about 20 hours 20 hours about 20 hours so yeah we're doing that we're not doing that in
3:25
one go we're doing it kind of you know every weekend it's an excuse to get Mom around making some dinner and stuff like
3:31
that so um so yeah we're doing that which is really nice and we've just watched um The Two Towers so that was
3:37
really good um like The Two Towers Two Towers is a good one I got to be honest I think it's probably my least favorite
3:43
but it's still like my fourth favorite film of all time so it's like it's still awesome it's just the Helm's Deep
3:49
scene amazing I think that's the best bit and you know the the thing is as
3:54
well is that the um the elves turning up just makes me like tingle every time but that didn't happen in the books so it's
4:00
kind of like the thing that I love the most about that didn't actually happen in the books which is kind of a bit that
4:05
well there we are welcome to Lord of the Rings podcast um but yeah apart from that um I
4:11
taught JP and Rob War the ring which was interesting so I didn't actually play
4:16
because you know I've played it loads and these guys didn't know you know I didn't want to actually you know TR them because I
4:23
played loads of these guys Haven played so I thought as a middle ground I would be the kind of help teaching both of
4:29
them as they were playing get used to it and that went really well really enjoyed it and um yeah so yeah it
4:35
was good it was really good fun um I was St you're like the The Dong King of the
4:40
war of the Ring um doing promoting fights and battles between people but
4:45
yeah I Haven played it for was it five years six years something like that long time ago and I
4:53
might as well have not played it before so I appreciate you help me it's got a lot of old fiddly rules doesn't it
5:00
not really I think the only thing that that I think some people could be switched off by is the randomness from
5:05
the dice rolling because it forms such a whole massive part of the game the dice rolling can feel frustrating but it's
5:13
like I was explaining to to Rob when we were playing it the dice rolling is the random bit but then the interesting bit
5:19
is trying to create your strategy around the dice that you're rolling so it's like right I can't really do that this turn so I'm going to change my strategy
5:25
and try and go down this other route and it's kind of trying to Pro for weaknesses with the the personal time and you're looking at their dice rolls
5:32
right what can't they defend against they haven't got very much of X Y and Z dice rolls this turn right that's really
5:37
try and push that so that's the only mechanism I think people could be switched off by but I kind of I actually
5:43
really like that it's like a little let's talk about hex before the let's talk about hex is I know yeah I like it
5:48
mini hex what a treat for you listeners how about you David what you
5:54
been up to um so I have had a little bit of a lazy week weekend in that I Bas I
6:01
was on a course I was on my it course on Thursday Friday which will mean nothing to most people yeah it's it's an IT
6:09
Foundation obviously I've changed jobs so I'm getting qualified in what I'm doing um uh so as a little kind of
6:17
reprieve from that I've purchased Dragons Dogma 2 so I've been sessioning
6:22
that yeah it's been good I know if you read the Steam Reviews and were negative um mainly from micr transactions and
6:29
performance but M the microtransactions you don't need to buy and it's typical Capcom stuff they did it with Resident
6:35
Evil and their performance stuff does need sorting so that is a valid point
6:40
but it's definitely worth picking
TURN 2 - Let's Talk About Hex
6:48
up so let's talk about hex the segment where we look into what games we've been playing let's start with JP a few weeks
JP - Wroth
6:56
ago uh on the gaming rules Channel I got to play Roth which begins with a W so w
7:03
r o t h and it's Chip Theory's newest uh game that's I think probably will have
7:09
finished on game found by the time this episode comes out and they co-design it
7:15
didn't they with um Manny tret yeah yeah who's the designer and artist of dice
7:20
frone and also did the art on radlands and wonderlands War I think y uh y so if
7:28
you kind of like his art style it's very colorful very out there uh bright pops
7:35
and all that kind of stuff um yeah he he's kind of combined with chip Theory
7:40
to design an area control game for people that don't like area control games CU he doesn't and the story is is
7:48
that he his son likes to play Risk a lot he doesn't like
7:53
Risk and he wanted to come design something that you could play with his son um so and those kind of Manny and
8:01
Chip the have been collaborating on some other things around uh 20 strong which is their solo um kind of card and dice
8:09
game that they released uh I it was early this year or last year uh so they've kind of had that collaboration
8:15
going and then obviously in the background they they've developed this but yeah I got a chance to play it um so
8:21
thematically it's a oh God how do I explain this it's like a a boners
8:26
fantasy um setting so you've got your usual tropes of like dwarves and elves
8:31
and um like men that are like bears and witches and paladins all that kind of
8:38
stuff um and it's very neon so it's kind of like neon fantasy so the the board is a is a real
8:47
assault on the eyes on color and it's like you know hot pinks and really like deep neon greens and everything's just
8:53
popping out obviously near PR to to death cuz it's Chip Theory um and even just again the artwork on on the
8:59
fraction mat is just like it's great it's really it's done really well um and
9:05
kind of the premises is that you all kind of gathering together in this area and the the map uh is divided into kind
9:13
of eight zones uh of which you kind of have the uh bottom area which is I
9:19
forget the name of it it's like your deployment Zone where you deploy in and it's kind of like you can't fight anyone in the deployment Zone we're all just
9:25
deploying and we got an agreement kind of thing and then the eight zones are like um four separate islands in the corner
9:32
or connect to kind of two half circles and then you've got like a a step up in the middle and another step up like a
9:38
king of the hill kind of steep Cliffy thing um and obviously there's movement
9:43
rules on how you can kind of go to different places but the premises is that you start with I don't know like 20
9:50
25 troops and they're like little I think now they're actually sculpted little minis uh when I did the Kickstart
9:57
of the little metal cylinders or like he cylinder things yeah they've upgraded them now oh they upgraded them they so
10:04
each I've got minis now I think you'll have mini like uh claws if you like the ory people or yeah
10:10
they're all unique which is really nice um so that I think that was a stretch gold in a lot PR cool um so you got
10:16
these little troops which are just your basic fodder the kind of Crux of that is if you lose your troops they're dead
10:22
don't come back so you have a limited amount uh and then each faction has their own like elite units which are
10:28
dice and again you don't roll these it's pretty much like chip Theory uses them as counters for their health all the
10:34
dice kind of have different abilities you know think of Chip Theory this dice does something really cool this one does
10:40
something even more cool um and some factions have different uh abilities that they can trigger um to get those
10:47
elite units out and those abilities is there's a currency in the game called Kora it's like a green gem and there's a
10:53
limited economy of that Cora that you can get access to so a strategy is
10:58
sometimes dominate that economy and keep it uh with with your faction to starve out the other other factions as well but
11:06
the Crux of the uh the area control is that it's all driven around dice drafting um which actually is a mechanic
11:12
I do enjoy I really love dice drafting as a mechanic um you know like coin bro and and other games like that and
11:18
perseverance that employ it's it's really good fun um and really you you
11:24
kind of roll a dice as an extra one um on top of the player count that you have and and you also have what's called an
11:31
allseeing die that you roll um at the beginning and that will either have you know extra attacking or um you know a
11:39
direct ranged uh hit that you can fire into the ble field or a times two which will mean you can times two actions on
11:45
the dice that you draft in and then yeah you you just kind of take it in turns to get those uh dice in obviously depending
11:51
on what's in the pool similar to what you're saying about war the ring it's like you you that determines what you're going to be doing um but the difference
11:58
is that obviously you're trying to get the dice that you really want quick and obviously the ones that are left over
12:04
hopefully you'll get them who cares kind of thing well maybe take the thing that stops the other person doing what you
12:10
don't want them to do that might screw you over more than you necessarily yeah you can necessarily benefit your in yeah
12:17
but there's mitigation in there that you can and they've changed the rules on this recently since I I played the the
12:23
Prototype is that you can spend any two of your dice including your allseeing dice to do what's called an all move
12:29
mobilization action which is quite a powerful way of just getting your troops and and units around the board but it's
12:36
very um accessible is what I'm going to say chip Theory games aren't really known for their accessibility with too
12:43
many bones and Cloud spire and burn cycle they're very heavy games that have a steep learning curve rough is a
12:51
complete like departure from from their other games this thing plays in like an
12:57
hour you can get four players around can get a game in an hour quite a lot of fun
13:03
you know dudes bashing fighting each other and you know you get to I think
13:08
it's 40 victory points and and you're the winner kind of thing so I really
13:13
enjoyed it it was um it was good fun I'm I'm not backing it though you'd be
13:18
surprised not backing you'll buy it later no I've backed it he's backed it um and it's mainly because area control
13:26
is not my favorite and even I can totally see what Manny's done as the design to make this more accessible more
13:32
fun I would play it actually I I would enjoy playing it um and I think it's a
13:38
perfect convention game which iic is what you said as well Dave when you you kind of researched it but it is I can
13:44
see this thing just you know you got an hour spare a convention should we just have a quick game of rough reel reel it
13:50
out smash have a bit of fun bit of banter B name calling around the table
13:55
and then go right that was fun pack it away what's the play count on it four four does it play well at four yeah so
14:02
is that the ideal number you think I I think yes uh just because you get all the interactions and the um yeah it just
14:10
makes the the map more crowded so there's a lot more contention going on
14:15
so with it being only an hour game then does it cost the similar to what a chip Theory Game would normally cost in which
14:21
case the value is not there is it or if they reduced it was about 70 79 for but I I what I
14:28
paid but that was for the metal extras and everything else yeah yeah and I
14:34
think I got the expansions with it as well the extra two races yeah so there's five factions that come with the the
14:41
base game so you've got like the elves the the dwarves the the bear people the
14:46
coder and then they're called there's some shadowy cloaky stealthy Rog like people and uh another one I cannot
14:55
remember Orcs maybe yes and the orc um U the ugly or ugam something like that
15:01
ugly woly ugly woly um and then the two factions in expansions are the paladins and the uh the the vena which like your
15:08
witchy cauldrons they have a unit called The Hags which I is great tickles me I'm
15:14
deploying my hags into the into the bit um and yeah so I think the price point I
15:20
think Bas I think it will retail about $65 but on obviously game found it's
15:25
about 55 at the minute so really accessible like considering what chip 3 usually whe out well into the is it I
15:33
love the look of it it's one of the main reasons I bought it which is really bad but I just thought I just I love the
15:39
Aesthetics of it and JP says it's good fun I it's nothing like what I currently
15:45
have an hour dudes on a map game sounds pretty fun to some of my other friends who don't necessarily they enjoy ball
15:52
games but when I'm around there sett of Katan or risk or Harry Potter so getting
15:57
another game that's B out would be really nice yeah and I know what you're thinking it's a chip Theory games and
16:03
where's the chips right there are chips they little mini chips that sit on the
16:09
uh the map and they're basically the area control victory points that you would get that'll be different every game and not all of them will come out
16:16
yeah and certain chips have extra um kind of income bonuses that you get for having that um area controlled so you
16:23
might get extra cor which again is the currency you might get an extra uh like an initial preempted stri
16:29
all that kind of nons stuff going on yeah it was good fun um and I'm quite
16:34
proud of myself just not back in every chip Theory game that ever comes out so yeah and the fact that you're getting it
16:39
is better I'm going to get you a little chip which says it's like a little medal as well for you and then well done JP
16:46
wear it around gr your birthday soon you're growing up that's it that's rough it's good fun yeah check it out how
Becky - Molehill Meadows
16:53
about yourself Becky well I was very lucky indeed that Chris priscott from
17:00
unfringed maker of Zuli sent me a demo copy of mole hill Meadows so it got like
17:08
the kind of basically a version he printed out himself to kind of test test it out like a prototype kind of copy so
17:14
I played that a little while ago and thought this is going to be great mentioned it a little bit on the podcast but couldn't really say much about it
17:21
then can say lots about it now oh it's great really really love it so it is a
17:26
you're the metaphorical mole then weren't you was the metaph mole yeah I was so yeah mole hill Meadow completely
17:33
different to Zuli um it is a I want to say rolling right but there's no dice
17:38
flipping right so cards basically look a little bit like maybe Tetris shapes kind
17:43
of stuff and you've got a lovely grid map with varying different there's
17:49
little worms there's little bits of treasure there's little mole Hills everywhere and you've basically got to draw a path to certain victory points to
17:58
things so you might be trying to uncover or dig through certain flower zones you
18:04
might be trying to connect this path to that path collecting treasure and whenever you um dig into a little worm
18:12
area you can then use those worms to kind of start unlocking special abilities like draw the last tile twice
18:20
or you your tile can now touch two fa where it can only normally touch one face at the last tile you drew so it's
18:27
just a really fun flip and right but it's going to change every time because the special kind of I don't know goals
18:34
change each time so I got curly to play it with me and he's not really into puzzle games as we all know you did
18:41
enjoy it didn't you yes I did um certainly uh Rolland
18:46
right well I would call it Ty and right really yeah that kind of thing um that I actually really enjoyed I'm trying to
18:53
put my finger on just why you're talking of why I enjoyed it over previous ones I've played what was that one with
18:58
you've got the railway and the and the river and in railroad ink so it reminded
19:03
me a little bit of railroad ink in the type of like you know you're picking up the shapes and making them fit and do like did you not enjoy Railroad in it's
19:10
not my type of game I think it's a good game for its genre but it's not my genre if that makes sense so um there's
19:17
nothing against against ra Inc which Adrien absolutely loves and is very popular um but yeah so I would the Mill
19:26
Meadows is more my type of thing with within the sh that I don't isn't my favorite so the reason why I liked it I
19:33
think is because yeah variation and all that I can see why that's good but the big thing about it was was the power up
19:39
upgrades I enjoyed so like collecting the worms and stuff just said right I'm going to try this time doing like I
19:45
think there was one where you could put down a tile of any shape you wanted of up to four or six depending how many
19:50
worms you wanted to collect and like it just it made made it feel a bit different sometimes you doing less
19:57
logical choices to complete goals in order to be able to get the most amount of worms and stuff and there's another
20:02
one that you complete that says the next time you put a shape down you can use um you get times two number of worms so
20:08
you're like leveling up to get a better level up later on it just it um yeah it kind of felt a little bit like had an
20:15
engine asymmetric a little bit more asymmetric you know where strategy yeah more of a strategy involved and you know
20:22
you w't just that's cool yeah so I think definitely definitely got legs um really
20:27
good uh really impressive and my favorite type sof far I've played of that genre but still not my genre yeah
20:33
it's B like the the rough and area control for me right yes it's not my favorite genre at all but I enjoyed it
20:40
so it's kind of that similar it should be probably on game found when this releases or very very
20:47
close to it um I will definitely be backing it and I think if you if you join early you might get 2 p off or one
20:54
pound off and I think you get a special card so I'm all over that I'll be I'll be backing it on game found the day of
21:00
yep well is there plushy moles oh well I haven't seen any well Chris if you're
21:06
listening I'm just saying just saying the artwork is really beautiful um oh
21:11
gosh I can't remember the name of the artist CL clemency Bon clemency BN and there is like a little sort of Nod to
21:18
Zuli so there's one of the tiles which is called wellfed nice it's is like oh see what you did there Easter eggs yeah
21:24
yeah yeah but yeah I really liked it you get a whole massive stack of these don't say map but field kind of papers yeah so
21:31
yeah you're going to have a lot of games out this it reminded me of cartographers
21:37
um it's got that similar when you flip a card you will be doing that shape yeah from from what I've seen of it anyway
21:43
yeah it's it's really good and it's really beautiful which is obviously high on my you know importance priority but
21:50
yeah yeah Chris if you're listening and you can get little plushy moles with the little minus hat on I all over that have
21:56
a little sound thing Moly Moly Moly I have to say though Chris is obviously friend of the show um what a massive
22:04
news he's had recently CU zuli's been picked up by o games to distribute that
22:10
um and obviously it kind of looks different because it's very oink games like with the small box and that but I
22:16
thought that was fantastic for him he's going worldwide or or International International yeah I mean if we can pick
22:23
it up that's that's a big big publisher really for that and I can terribly see that game working in that series is yeah
22:29
so yeah it's the right kind of feely so no well done Chris on that it's fantastic news yeah I think um Mo Hill
22:35
Meadows is going to have an RP of about 22 normally but yeah I think you get a couple of quid off or a quid off if you
22:40
book it early on game found so get on there people we'll put the link in the show notes yeah we've got a lot of uh
Davey - Mythwind
22:46
kind of previews or gifted games to talk about CU it leads me on to uh me and JP sat down
22:54
with myth winds we got cozy with it didn't we we did get cozy with it some
22:59
uh I think it was Star Valley Music we did um sat back with a cup of tea and I
23:06
had my Crocs on um I was going to bring an Odie for JP and me as well but apparently was a bit too far so I didn't
23:13
um just one oodie for you to share yeah no yeah get bit
23:19
sweaty yeah my did you get sweaty in a oodie they're so comfy but Jesus Christ
23:24
you get war on them anyway myth wind what is it all about so it's kind of a cozy game if you've ever played stard
23:31
Valley or Harvest Moon It's set in that similar premise where you've got a world
23:37
where you kind of you play a character within said world and it's the slow
23:42
evolving changes of said world so you'll get buildings out which will give you an
23:47
extra action on your turn in between your character actions and you very you
23:54
get events that come out and within a whole one season you could only maybe
24:01
get 20 gold that's all you've done really that day when it comes down to it sometimes you've got more actions of getting there but that's your end result
24:09
for me it reminds me of a very good mobile game it's that kind of feel it's
24:15
got that feel of you're doing x y and Zed you've got repetitive addictive actions that you're doing that get you
24:22
not much but you enjoy getting that it's about the journey rather than the goal which is very much a saying with this
24:30
game I think is you got to look at what you're doing in between and just have fun with it it's a relaxing game so you'll sit there and you'll work away at
24:37
it but you will get your fruits of your labor and something maybe minimal happen in the whole year but then suddenly
24:43
you're like oh that I that felt good at the end of it me and JP felt like oh we
24:48
actually enjoyed this a lot more cuz I'd heard some mixed things from people cuz I think it's definitely a game where you
24:54
know from looking at it from hearing about it whether you're going to enjoy it or you're not So within it you have
25:00
four characters you've got the merchant the crafter the Hunter and the farmer me
25:08
and JP split uh those two so we play two each mainly so we get a feel of each
25:13
character before we actually double down on said character um the merchant was
25:19
all about basically uh trying to buy stock in when it's low um you have a
25:24
your own little market board where you kind of manipulate said Market with actions but you've also got Rivals and
25:30
sometimes the rivals will change the market from selling to it or buying from it which really screws you you're like
25:36
oh please don't buy from the market I need that this turn and then they'll buy it and you can't dud said thing every
25:43
character's got like upgraded action so you can get better as you go along um as the merchant you have to get enough
25:49
money to buy your your Rivals out and you buy your Rivals out and then you trade them in and once you trade them in
25:55
you get like an upgrade for you know the level of rival and basically the
26:01
higher you push the price of something you start getting obviously markets more lucrative you start getting harder
26:07
Rivals out and I remember the first season I did really well got to the second season and where I pushed the
26:12
market up drove it up so high these level two Rivals level three Rivals were coming out they absolutely slaughtered
26:18
me on the second season I was just all the second year I think it was second season we only did two seasons second
26:25
season and oh jeez it was like yeah the first season I felt rich as anything the
26:31
second season I was like fighting just to break even it was uh definitely I enjoyed the merchant a lot and then
26:37
there was a crafter and the crafter kind of you've got this little resource chain um it's more like a um what's the word
26:44
Artisan chain where basically you get certain products in and you've got to improve them um and you push them down
26:52
this chain but when you can sell them at a certain point when you pull it from pull it from where it is on the Chain
26:57
you get get like a little action as well so sometimes you want to be chaining what where you get it to to then pull it
27:04
and then basically get set action and the reason why you're doing it is you've got to have certain combinations to
27:10
fulfill um orders once you've got say uh two bits
27:15
of leather far enough on a chain um up to number three and one and two and one
27:20
in one or the right colors you can achieve the request at the end and get
27:26
money I eventually started to feel like like sometimes you just didn't really do much and sometimes you maybe did a lot
27:33
but for me it wasn't as rewarding it wasn't I quite like the whole Market
27:39
manipulation I always having in games pipeline Etc not as complicated as that obviously but um it was an enjoyable
27:47
experience definitely would play it uh how about your characters JP the Hunter's kind of got uh a mechanic where
27:53
you you kind of prepare yourself with like the tools of them traps that you would go out into the Wilderness um and
28:00
then you would go on an expedition and that could last uh at least three three days sometimes you get lost and
28:06
sometimes it takes longer um and then you're you're requiring like resources like wood and pelts and food and all
28:12
that kind of stuff that you can bring back and and flog for money so the farmer is um is a very typical kind of
28:18
like polyomino Tetris shape style um tiles that you will purchase in uh which
28:23
could be like crops like strawberries and potatoes and runner beans and then you'll you put them in you'll need to
28:29
tend to them water them grow them and then then flock them and there's a bit of a spatial um element to that because
28:36
you can kind of get tools and things to help your Harvest and uh also you can buy cows and breed the cows and do all
28:43
that kind of stuff so so is it is it a like a board is it cards is it a mixture of boards and cards and a map this is
28:49
one of the biggest sound points of this game is the fact that it is a board and
28:55
you have your own little character board but the way these inserts are done is
29:01
you just you can save your game by just you literally just stack them all on top of each other goes in the Box B okay
29:07
it's revolutionary that's one of the biggest selling points for this game is I think if other game designers look at
29:14
the way they've done this game and can copy it to any effect to put into their
29:19
game it will be an achievement in itself because it's so nice to be able to just
29:25
put the game away and just come back to it and go oh yeah you can see where you are bang there's your stuff off you go
29:33
again you just literally put it down the the boards are kind of have like a little plastic insert B that it sits on
29:40
um so that and then the um buildings that you put out onto the the map that you're building on CU you can you've got
29:47
Town actions that you do that you send them out to every day and one of those is build buildings and you build certain
29:53
buildings out which give you more actions or give you better resource values or whatever ever but they're
30:00
there they're on the that piece you just literally stack them on top of each other it's it's got on the little booklet if you didn't know how to save
30:06
it tells you how to save at the back so as a point of reference you can come back to you go oh oh that's what all
30:11
that means bang off you go again it's not even five minutes not it's it's I
30:17
mean five you could get it done in under five minutes to save it and put it out again wow it's so you know because
30:23
you're literally Box open try tray tray tray farmer Hunter whatever and then
30:29
it's like the three town boards bang bang bang bang open that up done right
30:34
let's crack on and it's yeah it it's the most accessible in time to get a game to
30:40
the table and pack it away it's just so so good for that so I'm assuming then that there is a campaign game it's yeah
30:47
it's kind of like convenience way it's kind of like a uh an ongoing um you could say endless but
30:56
you'll get to a point where you'll sat and the characters will be completely leveled up and you'll probably go what's the point but yeah you it's designed to
31:04
be played over many many sessions right yeah there are event cards that will come out that give you goals and like
31:09
little story Snippets or stuff that happens in your village that will evolve over time so that there will be a
31:17
limited number so once you've seen them all you would have seen them all but they do say you can still play one if
31:24
you want still play on so is it Co-op then yeah yeah so so it's fully Co-op so what how do you measure success or is it
31:31
just more of a you're you will have event goals for the season right um and
31:36
basically something come out and it would say you need XY and Y of this resource similar to like dead of winter
31:42
or something like that or but we've only seen two different ones haven't we at the moment yeah first one was easy which
31:48
was just getting upgrade wasn't it yeah exactly I mean the goals all like random shuffle but then they they grow because
31:53
the further you progress in the game the more gold cards will go in but the premise is all the characters are doing
31:59
their jobs they're earning money every character has got a different route to earn cash and that cash then is used for
32:04
various different things but primarily to build the town's resources of like culture and food and and income and all
32:11
that kind of stuff and you're spending those Town resources to build more buildings into the valley of myth wind
32:16
and therefore give more actions and more progression and then when you build that building like a tech Tre unlocks another
32:23
three buildings that you could go for ETC and it just keeps progressing progressing that way do you have to play
32:29
four player yep so you could just play with two of the characters or one oh okay you play me yeah would you have to
32:34
play all four characters No so at the end of the season you can change a character so you just save that
32:40
character go to another character if you go again you get bored of it you go fed up at the farm and now I played him for
32:46
six season I just want something different you just go all right end of the season pack him away and get the hunter around because it's again it's
32:52
just a different route to get money money is the end product of every character so long as you get money you
32:57
can do it everything live real life real life real life yeah yeah it sounds really really D like appealing to a
33:04
diverse range of Gamers I think from what from what you said yeah the the characters are very asymmetric and they
33:11
do like if you want something a bit more complex the merchant is going be the most complex one other within the inke
33:16
keeper which is the um pa um expansions for the expansions um but yeah it I
33:24
wouldn't recommend it to every every gamer um it's definely people who I think wouldn't enjoy it but if you're
33:30
looking for a game as like an unwind or to like just kind of relax to as a euro
33:36
in some sense and Adventure game then I would recommend it
33:41
um there is another expansion out on coming out on Kickstarter now which is
33:47
the friends and family uh which is the biggest downside to this is me and J sitting playing we weren't really
33:53
interacting with each other at all we would talk through each other's what we've been doing but we didn't have to do that we just did that cuz we were
33:59
interested if if you weren't interested what the other play was in you could just both sit there and just do your own thing for that spam that
34:06
character is perfectly it's a perfect neurod Divergence couples game
34:12
um both sit and do your own thing but together um but the friends and family
34:17
thing going to sort this out where basically you have friends and family you can invest in and it's meant to
34:22
interweave your CS a little more what's going on more relationships with people so again that's Stu Valley of you trying
34:28
to build um friendships and Partnerships and ultimately maybe marrying and then
34:34
going down that road so interesting but yeah like we've only played two seasons in which is not a massive amount but
34:40
like Dave said we've had a um experience and all the characters in The Base game
34:46
so we're in that still kind of early stage how this game would feel 10 seasons in 30 seasons in we
34:54
don't know is the honest answer and we want to put that cavat out there because you know we've just got an early Taste
35:00
of the game but yeah for me like a couple's game this this you could sit and play with your spouse partner and
35:06
just have a chilled time you know low stage thank you very much for sending us a copy yeah thanks Brandon how about
Kerley - Trickerion: Dahlgaards Academy
35:12
yourself kly we've all been playing the new hotness haven't we oh I mean you guys have for sure um but yeah so I've
35:19
been not been playing the new hotness but it's new to us um so on Friday um
35:25
myself JP uh Stuart and Martin um in our gaming group played uh treron but d d
35:33
Dow guard's Academy expansion um which we've
35:39
JP JP's had it for a long time but we finally got it out um and it I would say
35:45
exceeded my expectations and my expectations were high so very good it
35:50
didn't change I don't feel like it changed an awful lot about the mechanics of the game however I feel it really
35:56
added to it um I can see why it's got such a high complication on on BGG I did
36:02
look it up because I was talking to Becky about his 4.68 which is one of the highest I've seen um and I can understand that but
36:10
because I think we all know the game core game quite well adding that bit on top actually wasn't as bad as I was
36:16
expecting the the Lear to be so um yeah so just to give you a bit of an idea as
36:21
to as the game um I'm not going to talk about Bas treron because we've talked about it before and we already know that
36:27
um so the Dow Gods Academy essentially um well let's start off with the basics it gives you an extra worker at the
36:32
start of the game which is nice um now talk about the new spaces because that's really the most of what it does on the
36:38
main board just got an extra worker so the actual three main spaces I'm trying
36:44
to remember I think it's three main spaces you've got over there on the new Dow Gods Academy board teaching which is
36:50
basically speaking your spells or spells you're not using anymore stop
36:56
it spells just to one he knows he knows their tricks he know we've had this
37:02
conversation before but I still enjoyed doing it to one you up so the spells that you're no longer using anymore um
37:08
because at the start of the game you just upgrade your spells as time goes on um you're not using anymore you can
37:15
put and you can teach them basically to new upand cominging um Wizards
37:21
um I'm leaving the the Wizards of dard um so yeah so
37:28
and you go over there you can teach your your spells to the to the new Wizards
37:33
and and the idea is that you don't use them anymore to perform in the theater
37:39
like you do in the bass game you can't do it anymore because everyone knows your tricks you better but you get a
37:45
passive income for teaching them to people so okay yeah now depending what what they call them Renovations classro
37:51
changes basically depending what ones you go for who's built them previously you get say you might only get the money
37:58
from that spell you might only get the fame from that spell you might only get the am uh sorry the The Shard from that
38:05
spell but the later on the more powerful classroom upgrade you can get might give
38:10
you an extra Shard which is one of the ones I got or an extra money than what was on it so it's interesting and I
38:17
think one of the mistakes that I made although I did do quite well in the end was I put two powerful spell in the
38:23
classroom so actually I was missing out on a couple of the bits that I could have got so I mean it was good to
38:29
practice and play around with the new expansion anyway but that that was one of the small little mistakes I think I made I mean I'm just going to put it out
38:36
there when he says he made a mistake he absolutely wronged the game like absolutely nearly got 200 right I want
38:42
that record carry on thank you yeah the reason I'm booed at the start as well is cu I really enjoyed to carry on and JP
38:50
at the convention was like oh mate yeah I'm going to put the Dow Guard Academy yeah you should sign up for it and then
38:55
it went up in the afternoon and went Within like an hour as I was working two n yeah I know it just went b i I was
39:03
hoping someone would drop out I hate to say it but no one [ __ ] did
39:08
so so yeah that's one of the spaces and that was really interesting um the other
39:13
space you can do is called practicing and essentially what that does is it upgrades your spells slightly so for
39:20
example every time you perform that one it's worth one more Fame if you've already been to the classroom and practiced it first um and that's kind of
39:27
a permanent effect you know you can have plus one Fame plus two Fame there's one that I got which was really interesting
39:33
was you if you performed your trick you don't take it back you leave it out there on in the theater so you don't
39:39
have to put it out again so that one really paid off for me I think just having the spread of my different tricks
39:44
around to the different the nice that's quite nice to be able to upgrade your cheaper tricks as well so you can
39:50
actually balance out some of them which are really bad in the sense that oh yeah
39:55
it's got really good Fame for an early trick it's got really good Fame and some shards but you need money early so
40:01
you're like oh whereas if you could balance out and just give you a little bit of money boost and get that TR out a lot that could be quite nice exactly
40:07
what I did so I I had two level one tricks that I basically boosted through
40:13
practicing and it made it quite viable to not having to jump to their level 16
40:19
so I earning quite a bit of Fame I say money it was tight as tight as balls in that game but managed to get by P on one
40:26
occasion but we'll L back but yeah so it's basically um those two
40:31
bits now there is a separate space to actually build the classrooms in the first place and there's this this I
40:36
wouldn't call it weird but I I don't remember seeing it very often where you've got who when you go there and you build the classrooms you get a certain
40:42
amount of flags whoever gets the most flags at the end of the game gets a a a VP boost basically and it's just like
40:50
the earlier you go there the bigger more Flags you get so yeah it's really it's like saying well I know you can't afford
40:56
it at the start of the game pay all this money to renovate this classroom but you're going to get a high VP at the end so it's kind of balancing that out so
41:02
that was super interesting the last space that you can go on is a space where you get secrets so these secrets
41:09
essentially um are big powers that you can upgrade your new worker with that
41:15
come with Dow Gods Academy who the prot with prot thank you um so they start off
41:21
and people who've played traron will know what this means they start off as a free character so you don't pay them wages um but they've only got one power
41:29
one I forget what they call it action point action point one action point but not only do you get these upgrades which
41:35
but say I don't know if you do um downtown you get this bonus right so
41:41
there's various bonuses of different areas you can go not only does it upgrade that but then they're more powerful they're you know more
41:47
experienced and therefore they going to charge you more money to pay for them but actually they get more action points as the game goes on so the biggest
41:54
upgrade I think if you get three of the upgrades they you end up having three action points but you have to pay them
41:59
two so they're as experienced and as good action point wise as your magician
42:06
MH all right so um yeah I found that really interesting and it just added a lot of stuff that I like from other
42:11
games like feeling like you're upgrading and and you're you know creating your own kind of um system into what is quite
42:20
a normally quite static game which I absolutely love it's one of my favorites but it added a lot to it and I can see
42:26
complication like when you go there that was the biggest thing like understanding the rules wasn't too bad but it's like
42:31
trying to sque even with that extra worker trying to squeeze in going over there and getting these nice things was like oh my God I was like I need to
42:37
perform this time but then to perform I need to go to the marketplace but to go to the marketplace I need to you know first get my trick from downtown but but
42:44
then I need to practice and get oh my God and then it's like you know at one point I think my AP hit about 5 10
42:50
minutes and and I got a few comments from JP and everyone else about Bloody hurrying up which is fair enough and
42:56
then two he's doing exactly the same thing so I made sure to rub it don't remember don't remember it no on your
43:02
turn it it was like a minute yeah one turn he's I know the one he's on about
43:07
did you have a breakdown yeah yeah that's the thing with trara like we we played it enough to know that that
43:13
production wheel should we call it of of how the trick Cycle Works we know it right so now there's just this other
43:19
thing that's been introduced and it's like oh and it's like is it a bit of a distraction how can it enhance that
43:26
production wheel what do we do yeah it's in we hav't I don't think we fully figured out the best way of leveraging
43:32
it but it was quite fun just playing around with it it feels like you have limited actions anyway in that game like
43:38
if you mess up a a turn by not getting the material at the right point and it
43:43
can really screw up your whole kind of trick system so having something else to
43:49
throw like it's like another Cog you got a slot onto your wheel somewhere and at
43:55
the right time well then what they done is is introduced that prote to battle that I think just because you wouldn't
44:01
have enough workers to do it so they've added a new thing to do but they've added you given you just a free worker to do it so I it's just more to think
44:08
about rather than being impossible it's like yeah just more to think about yeah okay um but yeah the only other thing I
44:14
wanted to mention about it really because the rest of it is kind of the same is that they've introduced four new
44:19
characters um I think and they basically specialize in the new bits in The Academy and the new expansion um but
44:26
what is interesting I'm not going to go through those now although they are quite interesting they have redone a couple of the weaker um magicians from
44:34
the old one as well yeah oh really yeah oh that's good and they they actually look quite competitive now so it's it's
44:40
much more even now obviously as the new first game I decided to go for the one that was for the new expansion out
44:46
really well yeah so that was good fun so yeah really top marks as far as like you know that goes really just balancing
44:52
that out a little bit and introducing a bit more variation um but yeah top Top Notch I would say has it pushed it up I
44:59
don't know it's definitely a better game for me whether it's pushed it up CU it was already like number three or four so
45:05
yeah but awesome game definitely worth it and if you're put off from the high BGG rating I would say if you know Bas
45:12
TR car on actually you'd be fine yeah don't don't throw it in from the start
45:17
no definitely at all no don't be that guy no that's usually me right say that
45:22
is usually you don't do a JP and throw the expansion in at the start with trar on especially cuz what you said DAV is
45:29
that you you [ __ ] up is punishing you you you're done you know so yeah don't
45:34
do that why don't why don't you tell the listeners about your little um Bulls up about halfway through the game you couldn't paid
45:42
wages yeah I I took a gamble which completely backfired which was banking
45:47
curly performing a um my my tricks in a theater and he didn't so I was left
45:53
starved of money I no money and then I lost 10 VPS oh because it's two VPS for
45:58
every money you can't pay so that stung a little bit wasn't the feel good but I managed to pull it back I I did okay
46:05
score wise I think but uh what you don't know with expansion is how much extra VPS it's adding to the overall Pop um I
46:12
think there's more in there to play with for sure I know you start further back on your Fame and you start with a bit more money not a lot but a bit two more
46:20
um but you know what two money at the start is everything I think I had 18
46:26
didn't I last uh which I felt like Mega rich but Christ yeah that was a tight on the old
46:32
wages and that I didn't do any practice um teaching so yeah there we go right moving
TURN 3 - Main Event: Theme Tycoon
46:39
[Music]
46:45
on so going on to our main section theme Tycoon so this section we're kind of
46:51
going to mix some things up and see how we can make a theme more lucrative and how we can make it better first of all
46:58
I'm going to introduce the whole subject by just talking about what our favorite themes are so for me I'm kind of going
Discussing our favourite themes in board games
47:04
to go very very cliche I think it's sci-fi I think that's the most themed
47:10
game I've got is actually sci-fi and it's little bit disappointing because I was trying to think about it I thought
47:16
oh yeah maybe it might be some abstract now it's just [ __ ] sci-fi give it the
47:21
spaceship yeah exactly SP it's a bit Yeah spice it's a bit more free Ro is it
47:27
cuz I quite like the tech side of things and everything else and you can be a bit more creative with it and I think that's
47:34
why I like it how about yourself yeah I I I nearly kind of went on the Sci-Fi
47:39
Vibe but actually I think what really like ticks the box and it might be quite
47:45
a boring answer yeah but it's that setting olden times Renaissance period
47:53
are you say I love it dry beige euros but it's you know like the the
47:59
lorenzos and the Lisas and the the coin bras and things like that you know
48:04
putting you back in time as a family member of this period doing I don't know I just I dig it man it tickles your wig
48:11
yeah tickles my wigs and you know it's set around some bloody you know 16th
48:17
century place in Europe or I I I like you're born in the wrong time I like it I don't know even stuff like V culture
48:24
and that it's like very oldie kind just something you just I don't know it's kind of like chill even though it's half
48:30
those games aren't chill but you know what I mean like the theme of it if you time definitely W chill I don't know I
48:37
just quite like it I think there's a part of me that in this is really weird to say because I hated history when I
48:43
was at school but I think in board games I like it I really I really like appreciate it and like lisb especially
48:51
because actually there's an event that happened in in Lisbon um all those years
48:56
ago in 19 I think 55 was an earthquake and it's the whole the whole thing has been built around this event and it's
49:02
like I quite dig that yeah I forget about his theme frequently other than the time when I fled my kitchen and then
49:08
after playing liis B I thought now I'm thinking of them so I quite I quite like those kind of themes if you want to call
49:15
them themes cuz you could argue that they're not really but I I quite enjoy
49:20
them so JP L beige Euro beig how about yourself C we'll go round
49:28
uh well I'll just keep mine pretty basic I You could argue a couple but fantasy fantasy yeah yeah
49:34
just yeah swords wizard that's why you love traran so much yeah that's all the Wizards involved in that um but yeah
49:41
that that's probably my favorite like don't get me wrong there are plenty of like games in my top 10 that wouldn't fit into that but I would say if if I
49:49
looked at a game and it was fantasy I'm more likely to give it a try um does
49:54
Almost Doesn't Matter What type of fantasy it is like you know from everel which is fantasy right and it's all
50:00
about really is just talking animals right so that that still draws me in or
50:05
whether it's proper like sword and sorcery stuff also draws me in so it's kind of like it's got to have that
50:10
fantasy element it's the same with like even stupid stuff like in the films I watch are like um fantasy Horrors and
50:16
stuff like that so werewolves vampires all that kind of stuff it just is that little bit of um non-reality really that
50:23
that I enjoy just I I I guess I get my I like my real life and my entertainment
50:28
to be distinctly different yeah that's yeah it's viable and yeah is it makes
50:35
sense I can understand why you why you enjoy that so Becky's obviously dressed as a
50:42
valkyrie would have preferred Elf or you went for the for the fat woman with her big hair I didn't say that you didn't
50:49
need to always F I was going to say more like a busty maid but that that would be
50:56
know where I'm going with this now glad I introduced it can I have a
51:01
pirate hat yes you can wear a pirate hat as long as there's a you know some body or B I think we
51:09
need to wrap this up here what are you wrapping up it's getting a bit sexy
51:15
this I didn't start that I'll point that out no JP did how about yourself Becky my favorite
51:21
theme well not is going to be a surprise to anyone but animals and nature animals and nature animal of nature I'm far more
51:28
likely like curlyy said to be interested realistic animals or cartoon have to be noted if it involves kind of yeah
51:35
lifelike but again like everel is a really good example obviously that isn't lifelike because they're talking animals
51:42
a bit like sort of animals of faring wood kind of a thing wind of the Willows yeah and that's fine too but I think
51:49
yeah as long as it involves some kind of naturey maybe that's because usually
51:54
those games are very beautiful and that is definitely something I'm interested in but my alltime top favorite game not
52:01
surprised to anyone terraforming Mars isn't any of those things yeah and nature animals is m m there we go so
Discussing some games which a theme change would make it more appealing
52:07
we're going to briefly discuss some games and talk about maybe a theme that we could change it to or you think that
52:13
would make it better or instantly buyable um and how you think would we
52:18
could push up or elevate it from just changing its theme no mechanics change
52:23
literally just changing its theme so I'll start so we may have mentioned this in the
52:29
last episode we may not have depends if it makes it in
52:34
there GRE Western Trail its theme which we definitely did mention is dry as
52:40
anything and the theme I thought we could change to which is kind of sci-fi it's like an Abes Odyssey theme so if
52:47
you've not played Abes Odyssey it's a little alien that the other aliens eat
52:52
but they don't think they eat them they think they're just workers so it's got this whole soil and greenes undertone to
52:59
it so you could basically be one of the work of things going through with some
53:06
of the a obody the aliens and you're cashing them in and then you're trying to eventually maybe escape with them up
53:12
that trail or you get to a certain point you're trying to eat as many of them as possible maybe that's worse I don't know
53:18
but I thought it makes it at least a little bit more interesting rather than just cashing in cows and having like
53:23
maybe work buildings that you put in between it and plus throwing in a whole Sony tie I think it's Sony their ownly I
53:31
think you're right but I think they should have electronic buttons on the board that you press and he goes follow me follow me yeah
53:40
go which is what you used to press on the d-pad and make noises cuz it's basically the game is like Aid scolling
53:47
um you've ever played like flashback or um some other games that are similar um
53:54
yeah two 2D side sing not really platform but quite puzzly wasn't it certain dizzy or like yeah that kind of
54:01
was that Earth one gy was a little bit less less actually yeah okay yeah more
54:06
puzzle more more puzzle and more had like more stealth elements um where if you got caught you would have to then
54:12
start back to where you got caught from and trying to work out the puzzle as you went along so really it it's got no
54:18
other like resemblance to the game other than you have to kind of go through this trail and I just thought it'd be quite
54:24
fun to play instead of cows you have to buy the aliens which you then mulch up and have to get as many to mulch up and
54:30
go up the track so you're playing as the bad aliens subjugating the the AY kind
54:36
of style wow okay dark but it's quite an interesting theme though that's that's in my head would be
54:44
more interesting know the if you know thep even if you didn't I'd still think maybe some people would just complain
54:49
but I don't know but yeah I would find it more interesting Fair how about yourself Becky I mean it's actually
54:56
happened so wingspan worms span yes I
55:02
liked wingspan and I don't mind Birds very nice I don't it's nature an animal
55:07
so it's instantly kind of you know my ears are like oh hello what's that less cutesy and more like um Wikipedia isn't
55:15
it it's it's more kind of uh what's the word for it there's a word where it's
55:21
kind of more of a documentary es those kind of photos on there aren't there they're like
55:27
well I don't know but it's like it feels more bird watchy like orthologist is it
55:32
more of the technical side of the rather than being like a a little zoo or like Zuli or or making them even cute or even
55:41
the way that Arc NOA does it is less orological than the way that wingspan
55:48
does it wingspan somehow makes it look very dry in my opinion it looks like the sort of Botany kind of pictures from
55:54
like Victorian kind of stuff I got exactly I quite like that but um that's
56:01
not going to be a selling Mo for a lot of people oh let's play this game about birds oh no well good thanks whereas
56:07
okay worms ban is quite a different game in lots of you know uh lots of areas but
56:12
you are still building a tableau with cards with pictures of birds or dragons on so I
56:18
think not worms worm worms with a Y okay
56:24
so yeah I think that Chang of that um theme although it caused a lot of
56:29
controversy with people when they announced it I think you say to a group of people that haven't played games
56:35
before Oh you want to play this game about you know enticing dragons to a cave oh yeah I'm in so that maybe would
56:40
appeal to say someone in Curly's you know area who likes that kind of fantasy based element whereas if you say to him
56:46
you want to play a game about collecting Birds maybe he's not going to be interested but actually it's made me
56:51
realize that I think if the game is good enough the theme sort of doesn't matter you could make that game about I don't
56:59
know robots or what something that you're completely not interested in whatsoever as long as it has this kind
57:05
of resource does this kind of thing you could literally put any picture on that game but it's appealing the bird thing
57:12
and the dragon thing is appealing it helps doesn't it it helps people first play the game that's the that's the
57:18
difference yeah I mean if a game is really good you're going to come back to it anyway so you know like my dislike of
57:24
Lords of water D for so long purely based on the Aesthetics of the out of the box sort of fantasy battles not
57:32
really my necessarily my wheelhouse however play it once really good doesn't matter you know I'm not interested in it
57:38
needs two I don't know Rogues one whatever the other ones are I don't care
57:45
and wizard oh I didn't realize it has a theme does it have a theme well you're you're going you're going around
57:50
collecting things aren't you and it's it's just colors it doesn't matter what the theme is so I think if the game is good it doesn't matter the theme is to a
57:57
degree but that might entice you to play it I'm surprised they didn't troll massively with worms span and then just
58:02
actually make it about is it after pods is that what the world worm is it's an AR pod yeah I have no idea don't know
58:09
what you're talking about mate as an actual worms cuz everyone's about birds they didn't Troll and just make it all
58:14
about like about bir Gard worm whatever yeah
58:21
it was a bad joke right
58:27
um curlyy how about yourself um yeah so just G to uh reinforce what Becky said that was going to be my honorable
58:33
mention um because for sure I didn't want to play wingspan um I kind of got
58:39
um like JP played it before and told me it was really good and I think I was bored on the night where he put it up so
58:45
I right I'll go for it but it it was kind of one of those I wanted to play a ball game with my friends I really
58:50
didn't want to play that board game with my friends if that makes sense so um so yeah that's what drew me into it and
58:56
then when I play I like actually this is really good but if it had You' have said it's a game about dragons I'd have been
59:02
there in a faking flash yes so yeah 100% totally agree with Becky on that one um
59:08
the one thing that I was just like thinking about okay what would be my actual one that I would change it and I'm not going to say I would change
59:14
because I love it the way it is but I'd be really interested to try unsurprisingly a Lord of the Rings
59:19
version of Game of Thrones oh just with that whole planning element in there I'm
59:25
sure you'd have to make some ad options and maybe even you take the opportunity to upgrade some of the mechanics that
59:30
don't work so well on Game of Thrones try and upgrade those but I think the whole like all flipping over at the same
59:35
time and you've all done different things and I just think thematically it really does um represent the Delayed
59:44
Action of an order so if you go and tell JP you go to flip in X Y and Z and do that thing but it's going to take you a
59:50
week to get there and then do the thing and then by that time you've been invaded by some other git so you know it
59:56
for me I really like that mechanic always have done so I'd like to see that one in maybe a Lord of the Rings kind of
1:00:02
like War of the Ring maybe just because I love war of the Ring it's making me like what can we do you can even do
1:00:07
about the wars beforehand when the dwarves and The Elves and the humans are all fighting each other beforehand then
1:00:14
the Battle of Clen Fields yes there we go and you could have it then when the Orcs are also chipping in so everyone
1:00:20
could be a different faction and work it that way yeah exactly so that that would be mine I would say although rather
1:00:25
specific them I would like to see the Game of Thrones General way it plays in a Lord of the Rings nice cool nice I
1:00:32
like that I'd play it yeah how about you J yeah for me I'm trying to think of one
1:00:39
I'm not going to mention the one I mentioned before which was terraforming Mars but I was going to call it terraforming Ms the uve Rosenberg
1:00:48
version because you could totally make it work as it's a field not Mars yeah
1:00:54
you can pick a historical point time when that field was suddenly changed it would you and all know it would work and
1:01:01
still be bloody good but I'm not going to go with that I oh what about the industrial change of farming when they
1:01:06
start first started using new tools just about to say that yeah there you go but that's not my answer my answer love it
1:01:12
it's all history based be but my answer actually is more on the thematic and I
1:01:17
don't think there's ever been and correct me from wrong like Indiana Jones is probably one of my alltime favorite
1:01:24
franchise I love it hisor hisorical mhm Supernatural historical it is it it has
1:01:31
brief mentions of historical moment people like the Arc of theant sure crack on yeah but but it
1:01:39
puts the occult in and it puts the supernatural in and I quite like that era and I was thinking what game would
1:01:45
work with that theme and I think the Witch of the old
1:01:50
world if you'd strip away the I mean I like The Witcher like can we strip away The Witcher yeah chill out chill out gal
1:01:58
is getting sexy getting sexy but if you strip away the the the
1:02:05
game not not the actual Witcher and to his bare bones and then rebuilt that back up in the Indiana Jones um Universe
1:02:12
where you have the map that could be the the world map and your players like Indiana Jones and other maybe budding
1:02:18
archaeologists uh like um that french guy from the first one and whatever and
1:02:24
instead of monsters there that you kind of go and trying to hunt and that they could be clues for for temples and
1:02:31
artifacts that crop up and you have to go and discover and go on trails to to find and then therefore get the uh the
1:02:37
artifacts out of raiding that Temple going through certain checks and all sorts of different things and then those
1:02:43
artifacts can give you little Buffs and also that game has a quite nice interaction where you two characters
1:02:48
come together and play uh dice poker so again you could be doing something similar um in in there and again I I
1:02:56
just think that kind of world where you you you're flying around just typical Indiana Jones red line on the map with
1:03:01
the theme music going all over having a bit of interaction there's a bit of story and narrative elements that crop
1:03:07
up just to kind of bring it all all to life I thought that'd be quite cool it leads me on to the next Point uh we're
Themes which we feel haven't been done enough in board gaming
1:03:15
going to make which is themes that you think have been underdone because let's face that there's some themes that
1:03:21
people just seem to have clung to or they seem to have been over produced like we all like it dinosaurs yeah
1:03:27
zombies dinosaurs as well recently well before there weren't that many and now we've got like five or six suddenly
1:03:34
appear um there's an what animals even though you love it there was a massive
1:03:41
fad of that and that's now in my eyes slightly being
1:03:46
overdone for me a theme that's underdone or every game that is in this theme I'm
1:03:53
not too bothered playing so i' would like games to come out would be a steampunk esque fee I would I really
1:03:59
like all the steampunk style of stuff that comes out but I think no one's really clung onto a Euro side of
1:04:06
Steampunk cuz you you're engine building and it fits into the theme massively you
1:04:12
could be putting together all these random parts that make or do different
1:04:17
things to make your cool object which you know could be a steam powered rifle or whatever which pretty much is just
1:04:24
part of your engine building or steam powered don't know they're always weird and funky objects aren't they there
1:04:30
always things I can't even think of now futuristic historical bit or victoriia together isn't it it's very it's very
1:04:36
cool I do like that that and I don't think there's ever been a Euro that's been like oh yeah we do the steampunk
1:04:42
there was plant of nuo where they tried to fill it in but it was with farming it's more like well they classed It Solar Punk didn't they solar Punk yeah
1:04:49
which still didn't feel that steampunky to me but I feel like it's a really
1:04:57
underutilized um theme and there's there are a couple games there's steampunk
1:05:02
Rally or something which is literally just a racing game and there's another one where it's like an
1:05:10
adventure it's a bit like I think it's bit like B Tales um there's a steampunk
1:05:16
s game where it's very very heavily Adventure game and it didn't didn't look up up my street it
1:05:23
looked a bit but it's got red quite quite good ratings but I also think it's
1:05:29
not easy to get a hold of so I don't think I'll ever play it but they're the only two I can pretty much mention can
1:05:35
can anyone else think any of any others there are some other I can't remember the names of them
1:05:41
there's something like a great machine or something like that yeah but I'll have to look it up and that out feels
1:05:48
under uh and D yeah I think there could be
1:05:53
more in that genre sure surprised they didn't do anything with cyber Punk or anything like that well the is that
1:05:59
something cyber Punk the board game is coming out oh by the same Publishers as The Witcher inter they have made a board
1:06:06
game as well already didn't they The Gangs one The Gangs one that's more control dudes on a map wasn't it people
1:06:12
say it was very basic dudes on a map when people actually played it they did enjoy it but they said could have been
1:06:18
anything yeah wasn't really wasn't really that cyber Punky so there's a proper board game more narrative more
1:06:24
RPG bit if you can imagine the Witch of the old world if you played it but in cyber Punk and all that setting no yes yeah be
1:06:32
good looking forward to them how about yourself curly then you think of a theme
1:06:38
that that's underdone or underbaked that you like to put in the oven and um a lot of the stuff that I really
1:06:45
like are ones that are quite well subscribed to be honest like um I I do
1:06:50
yeah I kind of disagree with one of the ones that you said actually what
1:06:56
people who are regular listeners to the Pod will know that I'm massively in love with dinosaur games that was close to my
1:07:02
fantasy Choice fetish yes dinosaur fetish good job they aren't around now
1:07:08
is all I've got to say what about robot dinosaurs then that's under done that would be amazing yeah Transformer
1:07:14
dinosaurs yeah that would be amazing yeah Grimlock but yeah so I kind of I kind of dise the one you've mainly seen
1:07:21
more of them because I I get them all but I do kind of feel like um yeah
1:07:27
maybe we could do with a few more I really do but the the thing is is like how far do you go with it it depends do
1:07:33
you call the like perseverance I'll probably count as a dinosaur game maybe um and that's been really really good
1:07:39
for it dinogenics were interested giving a go uh dinosaur world so there are a
1:07:44
few knocking around I just yeah I just kind of feel I want more but that's just me being greedy probably enough of them
1:07:50
it's just I'm a greedy get so I want more it's a really strong theme and I do
1:07:55
like it so me saying it's just it was there was a wave of yeah games where
1:08:01
they all seem to pick one theme bring them out at the same time and then they go away again you don't see them again so I do like dinosaur games I would love
1:08:09
an actual proper Jurassic Park dino game to come out but yeah I mean yeah they've done similar games like basically I I
1:08:15
guess what I'm saying is and the Publishers please don't shoot me for this one but um Dinosaur Island I always
1:08:22
getting more confused but it's Dinosaur Island the one with the neon the first one yeah Dino Island Dino Island yeah Dino Island
1:08:28
I kind of want that I want that game but I want them to fix a few things with it
1:08:33
kind of I I love the the thematics of it um overall I like actually the artwork
1:08:39
and everything else works so well but yeah there's a couple of I'm going to go ahead and call them mistakes I think
1:08:45
they made with the game about to do with um dinosaur variety you've got such a huge variety of of dinosaurs that
1:08:52
actually lived that you could easily bring back to and then the basically to be small carnivores to all be the same
1:08:59
medium car sorry large carnivores to all be the same and herbivores to all be the
1:09:04
same I don't know whether they just wanted to appeal to a a kind of a more basic demographic I don't know but it
1:09:10
just feels like they could have done so more with it so much more with it so I'm looking forward to giving Don jell a try and I'm looking forward to hopefully
1:09:17
that's going to fix some of it but if it doesn't I think like you said Jurassic Park really is what we're talking that's
1:09:23
really what Dino Island is um but done a little bit better yeah you want the the
1:09:29
depth of building your Park and doing all the cool things which I actually think tiny dinosaurs did better than
1:09:36
Dino Island yeah I totally agree I was really surprised by that game what I want I've decided here it is summed up I
1:09:43
want OVA dinos yes yeah there you go that's what I want you want you want the
1:09:48
deepness and Uranus of arova but with the dino hey that's probably the next expansion to be honest can we just can I
1:09:54
just might just email them when I get home and be like can you make dinosaur version please that would be amazing thank you yeah that would be amazing I I
1:10:02
would that yeah there we go no it's not for me Becky's out I'm out don't invite
1:10:09
Becky son's Becky I've got one I mean I don't want
1:10:15
this game couldn't care less about this game but is that the question but I'm surprised there isn't any or maybe there
1:10:22
is but I just don't know about it because it's not interesting to me is sport-based games yeah maybe that's
1:10:29
because Mass talking in massive generalizations here the kind of people that play board games are often not the
1:10:35
kind of people that play sports of course there's some people of course there's lots of course there are but I
1:10:41
think they are probably quite separate groups I would say there's more crossover now aot there's more a lot
1:10:48
more people watching American football uh football in general just you don't
1:10:54
have to play it to be a board games are appealing to far more people than they ever used to sure but knowing how many
1:11:00
hours curle has spent playing Championship manager which is very strategic very kind of working out he
1:11:06
loves it I'm surprised they haven't got something like that they have have they called
1:11:12
11 never even heard yeah so there's a football manager board game called 11 don't know how good it is though it's
1:11:18
not my thing but I mean they I did see them do a Ted lasso came but I think that was just a pure IP kind of that's a
1:11:25
part yeah I mean I would buy it I nearly did buy it but I didn't but I didn't um
1:11:33
I don't know how well a lot of sports games would would transfer over sure and that's probably why isn't it that's
1:11:38
probably why but for such a massive popular genre of things in the world
1:11:44
sport hasn't had a you know I mean I could like I say I couldn't give less of a crap about any sport game absolutely
1:11:50
just not interested blood bow maybe well I've got one that a bit of a cur purple for you one you've played oh heat
1:11:59
yeah yeah there's a lot of racing ones and you throw in there what's the cycle vers cubitos I guess is
1:12:06
racing kind of now we're on the fringes sport I mean so Snakes and Ladders is
1:12:12
racing up you know how basic do we go I don't know how well a lot of the I guess
1:12:18
you know NFL would transfer how well football would transfer how well Cricket would transfer I suppose doesn't exist
1:12:25
exactly so that's kind of you would have to do it more about the player management and the B off of the actual
1:12:30
pitch yeah and and maybe that doesn't appeal to some people I don't it definitely wouldn't appe to me like I say couldn't care less want to make a
1:12:36
golf game I don't play golf but I think that would be quite fun is if you do all the golf thing where you have to like buy and invest in players and then the
1:12:43
certain ones and it's bit RNG whether they like Po in the hole or
1:12:49
notep Jes [ __ ] how B Euro man's falling asleep from golf absolutely more
1:12:55
excited I guess the film B not basball that's the hilarious one isn't it Moneyball that's kind of as near to a
1:13:02
game that you could maybe make sport in the way I'm thinking of it but blood ball blood B massive one about American
1:13:10
football that very well they had to make it so that they killed each other more fun is and I guess you've got
1:13:17
hus which is about sport of a gladiator so I suppose maybe there are more if
1:13:23
we're being very general about it iCal sport that's what it needs to be why I like it that's why J B likes it yeah so
1:13:29
but I'm just surprised I guess knowing that sport is so popular as as a as a genre of things people are interested in
1:13:36
FL yeah you could make one about the Olympics actually where you could basically have the different uh events
1:13:42
that you do and then you each have maybe you collect the meeples with your characters that you put and do the
1:13:47
events and then for each event you have like a little another little mini game managing team GB yeah yeah that would be
1:13:53
cool that's a bit weird different yeah nice it's a theme that no one's done that is true maybe there's a reason
1:14:01
but but if it's done well mechanically it's fun then why not that's what it
1:14:07
comes down to with all of these yeah you can make anything from right um for me
1:14:13
there's one I think underutilized theme if you could call it a theme I love the concept of time
1:14:21
travel in any media like if a film's got time travel in it I'm like or time
1:14:28
manipulation or something around that that concept like one of my favorite uh video games in in the past is Chrono
1:14:35
Trigger right it's an old Japanese RPG that has time travel right at the heart of it where you you kind of travel
1:14:42
through different time periods and what you do in the past then affects the future and changes the map and all that kind of stuff I know an Acron is the
1:14:48
obvious one that kind of crops up when you mention time travel but if we're being honest it's it's kind of just the
1:14:55
loan mechanic that they they' thrown up as a time travel but it works really well and I I dig it but I just think
1:15:02
does that that I don't know that time travel going around different time
1:15:07
periods whether that's an adventure Style game or Euro Style game but just something that plays you reverse your
1:15:13
actions like completely as you go along yeah there just something around that just will will Peak my interest 100% And
1:15:20
and that's quite nice because you get a lot of the historical elements of of theme that you can pull in and you can
1:15:26
get futuristic sci-fi ones and you can blend them you know so you can have the dinosaurs and you can have um
1:15:33
Renaissance period be and you can have like SP um and and all of those
1:15:38
different things and you can blend those together somehow and make a really cool and exciting game I don't know how I'm
1:15:44
not talented enough or you could you could do a work placement yeah when you put it out if it's at some one time era
1:15:51
you get said benefit but then when you pull that worker back if the timeline has changed you'll get different
1:15:57
benefits depending on what where the timeline is be quite cool what you do in the past affects the future yeah there
1:16:03
was an abstract game called that time you killed me never played it but it was a basically three boards I think it's
1:16:10
two player um and you kind of send your guy back in time and then what you do
1:16:16
there will then help manipulate what he does further in time and I think if you ever occupy certain spaces the
1:16:22
opposition then you kind of eradicate them from time all together like SpaceTime Continuum collapse but again never played it sounds interesting just
1:16:29
cuz time travel um but yeah I don't know I just think you know Back to the Future is like one of my favorite ever film
1:16:35
trilogies anything that you know has that in I'm down so kind of doing that
1:16:40
like that Bill and Ted's kind of thing where you just go back to different time periods doing different things yeah just
1:16:46
something bit different but I'll have to be good obviously yeah so I do like the idea of like a timeline when you put it
1:16:52
down it has a different action and then when you pick up depending what time line you've gone to has a different action and then maybe what timeline you
1:16:58
end up at has some has some influence as well so you can have like a whole scale
1:17:04
you have to manipulate and it completely changes your actions yeah and but everyone else will have the same boards
1:17:11
that they're putting down yeah how can you create like do certain decisions in the past that create a branching timeline which then which then
1:17:18
completely is different and it's basically game that needs a menu it needs a menu this is like triar it's
1:17:23
like a 3D cube rolling out and it's yeah I'm I'm down with that I think this is one for V I think I think you need to
1:17:31
like petition him to do this game because that just seems like a total mess of like right if you go down here
1:17:37
then it opens up these actions that you can flip it do it' be like that that reminds me of on Mars where no matter
1:17:43
what I wanted to do I was in the wrong [ __ ] place to do it you know so yeah definitely one for VTO yeah if you're
1:17:49
listening Mr Lera a time travel heavy Euro we're in yeah we we go time wise I
1:17:56
think we're probably going to have to move [Music]
TURN 5 - Penultimate Turn: What's Coming Up
1:18:04
on now on to the penultimate turn where we're going to talk about why why don't
1:18:09
why am I even describing this we know what penultimate turn is we're just going to talk about what we're up to or what we will be getting up to I've got
Becky - A bit of holiday & bringing some old favourites to the table
1:18:16
two weeks of annual leave on the horizon which is very very nice yeah very much
1:18:21
looking forward to that uh and I'm just hoping to get some other kind of old favorites are to the table I'm sure I
1:18:27
can convince curlyy to play terraforming Mars with me played that for a little while um i' like to play skullking and
1:18:34
actually we played a few little kind of party games the other day and it reminded us both how much we like just
1:18:40
little short quick you know games that we played such as strongpoint um which is available if you go on to strongpoint
1:18:47
game.co.uk um we met these guys at the ukge and um it's a really just fun
1:18:53
trivia game um but you don't know what you know the kind of theme of the
1:18:58
questions but it could be completely not what you're thinking and part of the game is about guessing how many that
1:19:06
person's going to get so you just know the broad category like Australian soap operas and then you think oh does Davey
1:19:13
know about Australian so proper I don't know and then you think yeah he's pretty good at that so you might talk about you
1:19:18
might think he's going to get three out of five so I put my little number three in front it's all secret no one else knows and then he answers the questions
1:19:24
but they might be really random so they might be all about Kylie manogue or something really like vaguely
1:19:31
tangentially related to Australian soap operas um and I get points if I get the
1:19:37
correct guess he also gets points if he guesses the answers so it's all about things that you know but also how well
1:19:43
do you know your friends and it's just really funny really fun game or it could ask you questions like how many legs
1:19:49
does a spider have y I mean yes so arachnids I got I got on arach and ever
1:19:55
thinking oh she knows enough all about them which is true I don't know anything about spiders and some of the questions
1:20:01
I have to be honest were very very simple what part what part of a scorpion
1:20:06
stings yeah which is great claws so you know you don't know or it
1:20:11
could be you know really very very 1980s a Olympic um Olympic medal winners or
1:20:19
something God so if that was the year that you really into the Olympic you're going to yeah yeah so yeah really good
1:20:27
fun game yeah but what what's good about it is it puts Stakes onto other people
1:20:32
want asking the questions cuz sometimes in trivia games you can get detached when someone else is asking the
1:20:37
questions and everything else cuz even though you're intrigued with the trivia it just happens you're not the one being
1:20:42
asked the questions whereas this it puts a stake on it so you're you're into them
1:20:48
getting the answers right you're like oh you know this you know this you know this one no more more that's it can make
1:20:55
you like no no I said the full name and the middle initial please because you they've already guessed however many you
1:21:00
thought they were going to get so yeah it's just a really fun really good fun game in a very small box good for yeah
1:21:07
good for that you can have it as long a game or short a game as you want really good yeah strong point game yeah I go
1:21:13
along with that I really enjoyed our small games like we had last Thursday that was really good fun just the classics but it was just it was I think
1:21:19
we did Nar of just chatting at the start it was just nice to nice to not play a
1:21:25
proper board game where you just cracking on with a board game and just chatting with with the friends we've accumulated over the last s five years
1:21:31
you know so it was nice uh so I've got what have I got coming up um I've got
Davey - Great Western Trail New Zealand
1:21:37
Great Western Trail New Zealand I looking forward to playing that tambo's description of it he described it quite
1:21:44
well because he's had a playthrough beforehand so he can teach us the rules and it basically just sounds like Great
1:21:50
Western TR but more which sounds lovely really a little bit more engine building and kind of uh some cards some different
1:21:57
Avenues you can go down uh with sort a little bit more variability or Choice which is always nice so yeah I'm looking
1:22:04
forward to that and sheep right and sheep yeah yeah no cows sheep you got to Shear you can share the Sheep as well
JP - Dying Light from Glass Cannon Unplugged
1:22:11
yeah how about yourself JP what you getting on to yeah I've got the Prototype or the latest prototype from
1:22:17
glass Cannon and plugs Dying Light uh from Mr Mark monk from Ninja geek games
1:22:23
thanks Mark for that um um so we played a little game of it at Essen and uh it
1:22:29
it's kind of early infancy I'll be completely honest for me I'm not sure
1:22:34
it's for me um although at that time when I played it I didn't think it was
1:22:39
uh going to be something I would massively enjoy um but I'm intrigued I
1:22:45
trust glass Cannon a lot with their games um and now it's kind of been a bit
1:22:51
more developed and you know the Prototype looks a lot more fancier than than the one we kind of played and I
1:22:57
think this a more rounded version maybe of the game so I'm I'm intrigued to give out a world right and and kind of put it
1:23:03
through its Paces so we' got a game of that coming up in the next few weeks and yeah see what it's all about and you
1:23:09
know me I quite like playing new stuff so yeah how about yourself King anything
Kerley - Heroes of Might & Magic III
1:23:16
coming up well I was going to say something else actually but I've just remembered in shrink just arrived Heroes
1:23:21
of Might magic oh oh yes that looks really good yeah so I kickstarted that one back in
1:23:27
November 2021 I want to say 197 22 it
1:23:33
was at the convention wasn't it that's when you played it was at the Birmingham convention Expo 22 Expo 22 Yeah Yeah
1:23:39
Expo 22 played it there um knew it was coming out anyway but it came out the following November into Kickstarter um
1:23:48
so yeah obviously ordered a reasonable amount of that all of it almost it's just hey Heroes of Might magic is is a
1:23:54
well established computer game franchise fantasy strategy um kind of thing with all sorts of different factions you can
1:24:00
play and stuff like that I won't go into the knitting gitt if anyone you know it's a really popular franchise so I'm
1:24:05
sure anyone interested in it would have already played it but it the game played like the computer game did so I'm really
1:24:12
looking forward to it like you're exploring around a a map and you got some like you know it does the whole
1:24:18
hidden kind of tiles it flips over you pick up treasure you have battles but what I liked about it is that not you
1:24:24
upgrade cards and all that kind of lovely stuff that you'd expect additionally when you have a fight you like you doing the computer game you go
1:24:30
to a whole Battlefield kind of thing and you have like a what is like almost like a separate battle game tactical b side
1:24:37
yeah tactical ble it was like one of the first turnbas asymmetric chest um what's
1:24:44
what's hex is it hex they are hexes it is hex her a m magic uh the actual game
1:24:49
isn't hex but the battlefield Battlefield is yeah I was going to say but it was it was one of the first that did that whole combat system very well
1:24:56
when playing multiplayer um so I'm very I was really intrigued to see how they were going to do on the board game yeah
1:25:02
so yeah I'm really looking forward to giving that a crack I've got the base game I've got a bunch of obviously um the kickstarter bonuses that you get the
1:25:09
stretch goals and I've picked up the rampart which is the Elfie kind of like
1:25:14
you know cental and all that kind of stuff and Tower and Fortress and uh
1:25:21
Castle I think um so yeah looking box yeah it's about seven different boxes
1:25:26
how many C cubes uh basically
1:25:31
two and three maybe two and a bit you have to buy another one to F that's
1:25:37
quite a lot that's quite a lot it's at least two maybe three I'm struggling to Vision it but you know hey look I'm I'm
1:25:45
the game looks really solid the reviews it's getting are really good yeah it is getting some good Buzz yeah so we we'll
1:25:51
wait and see how it actually plays but yeah when we played it at the Expo which was in its infancy really um we were
1:25:57
still like oh let itching to play more so yeah with the now finished
1:26:02
game yeah I really want to play that so all right so as always thank you for
